Sony Developing iPod Rival Again
Is the 5th time the charm for Sony? We’ll see later this fiscal year, which ends March ‘07, when they release yet another digital music player to compete against the iPod. Sony hopes save their flagging audio player business, as its music player sales have across the board have decreased 6.2% in the last year.
We think it may be the Network Walkman series, which look like USB Sticks. At this point, another flash based music player isn’t going to make a dent in the iPod’s marketshare unless it does a whole lot besides just playing music.

Booting an Intel Mac From An iPod
Christopher over at Playlist Mag has devised a method of booting those fancy new Intel Macs from an iPod. Power PC-based macs could be booted off Firewire compatible iPods with no problem, but apparently Intel-based macs would tell you it isn’t a valid target.
Christopher’s solution involves cloning a working startup volume onto the iPod, and then booting from there. Take a gander at his walkthrough in order to get your boot on.
One caveat still remains, older Power PC-based macs still can’t boot off of USB based iPods. Good thing we couldn’t afford upgrading!

Bella Catapult Turns iPods Into DTE Devices

Video editing accessories company Bella Corporation recently announced the Catapult, “the world’s first device to allow capture of video footage from DV or HDV video cameras directly to iPods or virtually any USB drive, and begin editing immediately.” As you can see from the photo, the Catapult is not too much bigger than an iPod (it’s supposed to be around the size of a Blackberry). It’s powered by rechargeable battery or an AC adapter, works with Macs and Windows, and takes FireWire connections from camcorders and digitizes the footage, storing it on your iPod or any other USB 2.0 drive, effectively turning them into DTE (direct-to-edit drives). It should be coming out in the second half of 2006 and priced under $300.

Sure, your PP5021 chip is probably still under contract for the other members of the iPod family (the iPod Video), but Dana also said she’d email and that we’d be friends forever.
Trust me, PP, it’s not going to work out. After getting one look at chip suppliers Samsung, SigmaTel, Actions, or LSI Logic, Apple will forget all about your quaint little media processor. Don’t look so down. This may not be any consolation, but we hear Samsung has crabs.

Company Wants iPod Sales Halted, iTunes Shut Down
Burst.com, the same company that sued Microsoft in 2002 and to which Redmond paid a $60 million license fee in 2005, claims Apple infringes upon several of its patents relating to music and video downloading. As such, it recently demanded that the U.S. District Court in San Francisco shut down a range of Apple services, including iTunes, Quicktime streaming and sales of the company’s flagship product, the iPod. Of course, Apple responded with what amounts to “make me,” filing a counter-suit demanding the rescinding of Burst’s patents in question. First it’s France demanding Apple open its iPod and now Burst demanding back royalties. Maybe Apple should hire a better image consultant.

Prez a Music Thief, According to RIAA
Don’t feel so bad that your iPod contains illegally-obtained music, because US President George Bush has also been stealing music. Check out this video, where he talks about his Beatles songs on his iPod, and of course, Beatles music is not yet available online. That means he must have ripped them from a CD. Last February, the RIAA said that ripping CDs is illegal. Welcome to the band of thieves, Mr. President.
We were just puzzled, though, why the president had music by The Archies on his iPod. Wonder which song? “Sugar Sugar?”

There are some reports of a Bluetooth iPod upgrading coming soon. Specs and release dates are obviously unknown, but iPod accessory manufacturers are said to be creating a plethora—that’s right, a plethora—of wireless gear. Possible? Impossible? Do Not Disturb iPod Shuffle Sticker

Team Gizmodo is mostly male but the one of us that isn’t regularly gets hassled in the NYC subway system, even when she’s got her earphones in—which you’d think would clearly signify to people that she’s in her private space and not to be bothered, but no.
Maybe she needs something that makes more of a statement, like artist Marco Siebertz’s proposed DO NOT DISTURB sticker for the iPod Shuffle. One side of the Shuffle becomes an invitation to communicate, the other a request for some alone time.

Thanko iPod Box Speaker

We can’t read their website at all and therefore have no idea what they’re really up to, but we here at Gizmodo are big fans of Japanese manufacturer Thanko regardless. These are, after all, the people behind such wonderful gadgets as the USB fan with card reader or USB hub, USB-powered ashtray, and Sleep In Your Clothes Desk. What would we do without them?
Their latest product, while not WTF-inducing, is still pretty unusual: a speaker made out of an iPod box. Their website has photos of speaker boxes matching the iPod Video (as seen above) and the iPod Nano, plus a blank box with an iPod Mini and then a PSP plugged in. So really the concept of this is, it’s an iPod box meant to be a speaker for the iPod, but look, you can plug anything else into it! Yeah!
Initially we thought it might be a DIY kit for making the speaker yourself, but the only requirements listed are a 1/8” headphone cable, iPod, MP3 player or portable game device. This costs ¥3,980 in Japan but if you’re hankering for one of your own, you might as well just buy parts at Radioshack and make it yourself.

60GB iPod Video Getting Canned?
Over the next couple months Apple may be phasing out the 60GB iPod video in favor of something else, hopefully the true iPod Video that we have been hearing about non-stop for the past month, according to an Apple analyst. Apple told distributors that the 60GB iPod will be “at risk” until the end of April. At risk basically means that it could be discontinued at any moment. Let’s hope this possible discontinuation will preclude the new video iPod that may or may not appear some time soon.

iPod Phone All But Confirmed?
![]()
Australian tech news site Smarthouse talked to an unnamed executive at Taiwanese cellphone company BenQ recently, who says Apple representatives have been working on manufacturing deals in Taiwan for an iPod phone over the past few months:
“An iPod phone is definitely coming. BenQ will not be making it as we are in competition with Apple however several of our suppliers have been approached to manufacture parts. Among manufacturers in Taiwan it is common knowledge. The issue for many is the availabilty of parts if the phone takes off” said the BenQ executive.
We’ve been talking about iPod phones for years now, but it seems like they might actually genuinely be in our near future. If you’re looking to buy a swanky new phone in the next year or so, cross your fingers and start saving your change.

Introducing… the iFan

We love getting emails from you guys, serious or silly. This is our favorite of all the ones we woke up to this morning:
Subject: The iFan: What is this world coming to?
From: Jeremy BrownWhile I was walking through my local Wal-Mart, I found this. It wasn’t where the electronics were, as you might think; no, it was where the garden accessories are, such as the weedwhackers and the mosquito-egg-killing rings. Well it gave me a laugh, hope it does the same for you.

iPod From Orbit
The story goes like this: when Apple CEO Steve Jobs won an abandoned mineral mine in western Australia in a poker game from late Australian publishing and gaming tycoon Kerry Packer, he reportedly asked that the first advertisement capable of being seen from space be created there. Two years later, and what do you know, it looks like an iPod. It’s huge—the iPod image covers 220.7 acres. See it yourself on Google local.
Apparently when you have billions to burn, even the most absurd projects are within the realm of possibility. But then Apple’s 30th birthday is coming up next month, so maybe they’ll just write it off on the ad budget.

Tangle Tamers i-Springs

As much as we’d like to hate Tangle Tamers i-springs because the “i-springs” part of the product name is really stupid, they’re actually a fairly neat idea, $10.44 for two long springs you wind around the cord of your headphones that prevent them from tangling even when you regularly jam them into your pockets.

Apple to Release Volume Limiter Software Update for iPods
Apple announced today that it would release an update to its iPod nano and 5th-gen software that allows users to set a maximum personal volume limit. Parents will also be able to set a volume limit for their kids and lock it down with a PIN number.
Thus Apple joins the ranks of lawsuit-paranoid companies such as McDonald’s telling its customers that coffee may be hot, plastic bag manufacturers cautioning that you might suffocate if you wrap yourself up in their products, and mirror manufacturers warning you that objects may be closer than they appear.

The Apple Mystery

Well, there’s apparently a big to-do coming up this weekend. It’s Apple’s 30th Birthday and we’re starting to hear some rumors. First off, there’s the touchscreen iPod. Oh, ho ho. What a wonder that will be. This has a 80-85% chance of actually appearing, and is one of the things I would love to see. Clearly, this would also mean that there will be full movies available on iTunes this weekend, which would be just swell. An anonymous source told me, back when the Hi-Fi was coming out, that the touchscreen iPod was months away, if it were ever to appear, so who knows.
Apparently, Jobs and his Flying Monkeys were in talks to get good movie content for the big AV launch. We shall see, won’t we.
Next, we have the iPod phone. This won’t happen. Even ThinkSecret is bashing this idea, and I seriously don’t see it hitting the streets in the current carrier climate. Hell, we can’t even get cool stuff from Korea, where new phones appear every five minutes. How would little old Apple get their solution out there?
Then we have new MacBooks. There’s some talk of a 12- or 20-incher coming down the pike. This is probably the most feasible product release. A Mac Tablet? I’m going to give that a 60%, just so I don’t look like an ass when they suddenly release one.
Strangely enough, I haven’t heard of anyone being
