Reviewed: Belkin Tunesync (Verdict: Good All Around)
Apple charges $40 for an iPod dock, using up a precious USB port on your computer in the process. Belkin’s Tunesync iPod USB hub aims to tackle the tasks of being an iPod dock and a USB hub (go figure). The chaps at Everything USB gave it a thorough overview and came away, for the most part, satisfied.
As a dock, the TuneSync functions quite well. Plug in your iPod and it starts charging immediately, while the audio out on the back of the unit can be used to output your iPod’s music to a stereo or set of speakers. As a hub, the TuneSync also performs nicely, but with one caveat: the five USB ports on the back of the unit are a little too close together, making fitting numerous big and/or wide USB devices, such as the iPod Shuffle, a far more difficult exercise than it ought to be.
The TuneSync will run you anywhere from $40-$70, so shop around a bit before spending your hard-earned money. – Nicholas Deleon

iDoll iPod Cases
If you weren’t already sick of iPod cases before, get ready to grab the Pepto because more supposedly high-fashion cases are being released into the wild. Thanks (?) to an agreement between Dr. Bott and i-doll, iPod users can now look forward to (more) iPod cases, but at least these are “hand-stitched by French leather craftsmen who pay close attention to detail and tradition.”
Just looking through the i-doll Web site really lends to their hoity-toity attitude. For instance, why not deck your iPod out in a gorilla costume, as pictured here? Such classy cases will run you from $27.99 to $49.99. – Nicholas Deleon

Jobs Wants Your iPod Money Once A Year
Maybe it was due to Brian Williams’ disarming demeanor, but Jobs just coughed up a nice quote during their interview today.
Jobs: You know, you keep on innovating, you keep on making better stuff. And if you always want the latest and greatest, then you have to buy a new iPod at least once a year. [Emphasis added.]
And here we thought it was because of cracked screens, scratched finishes, and battery problems that we had to buy new iPods each year. We understand it’s true, if you want the latest toys, you’re going to have to upgrade frequently. But it’s usually not something you say out loud for fear of looking like a jerk and being misinterpreted.

Gear4 CruiseControl Universal iPod Remote Control
Maker of fine iPod accessories, Gear4 is jumping back into the fray with yet another entry into the completely unsaturated market of iPod accessories, the CruiseControl universal iPod remote control. The CruiseControl (gotta love marketers) works via RF and has a 164-foot range. Since it works via RF, the CruiseControl can work through walls, for those all too common instances when your iPod is in the living room and you’re in the bedroom.
Since the CruiseControl works off the iPod’s dock connector, there’s no need for batteries and it works with all iPods with a dock connector, which is good news for those of you still clinging onto that 3G iPod.
The CruiseControl has all the normal functions you’d expect from a remote control like forward, rewind and pause, but also volume control and the ever-popular shuffle. This universal iPod remote control is available right now for around $47. – Nicholas Deleon

UK Reconsiders iTrip Ban
Well slap me around and call me Jenkins. It seems the great United Kingdom is reconsidering the ban that is placed upon the iTrip. For those unfamiliar, the iTrip is a low power FM transmitting iPod accessory made by Griffin. Get the full scoop after the jump.
The iTrip was banned because it violated the Wireless Telegraphy Act from 1949. Yes, the greatness of the iTrip is hindered by a 57 year old act. The act forbids the installation or use of radio equipment in the UK unless the Secretary of State granted a license. Granted permission for the iTrip was denied.
While there are still means to get an iTrip into the UK—unlike Iceland and Austria who have stopped shipments at the bonder entirely—there is still that pesky law that could cause problems if one were found to be using the iTrip.
Ofcom has said that they will be reconsidering the ban on the iTrip. Clayton Hirst, Ofcom rep, said that the organization is “working with other European administrations to develop a common set of standards to allow some low-power devices to be sold and used in the UK.” But the devices are going to be forced to meet strict technical standard to minimize interference to other radio users.
Like any legal matter, this reconsideration will likely take a while, but that is okay. This is just a baby step to opening up the airwaves for more modern technology.

Marantz IS201 Universal iPod Dock
Marantz has been in a bit of a universal device mood as of late, and the introduction of their IS201 universal iPod docking system continues that trend. Now before you say, “we’re tired of reading about docks, just give Marantz’s entry a bit of your time.
What does “universal” mean here? It means that the IS201 is compatible with all models of the iPod, including the nano, iPod with video, the mini and the iPod Photo—from the looks of it, any iPod with a dock connector seems to be compatible. Once docked, the IS201 happily outputs all your Bob Dylan songs, vacation photos, and hilarious video clips to your home theater system via any number of connections, such as S-Video and the ever popular red/white RCA audio jacks.
Thankfully, the IS201 outputs its own media interface to the connected monitor, so you’re not struggling to read the iPod’s tiny display when you’re across the room. And across the room you shall be since the IS202 can be controlled by a remote handset.
Will the IS201 make you smarter, make clean water available to everybody on Earth, or do your laundry? No, but it will play back your iPod-encumbered media on your kickin’ home theater system, which is almost just as important.

Design Concept: iPod Concerto Table
The iPod Concerto Table is for those rich but untalented folk who like pianos but have no idea how to play them. This design concept by Lovegrove and Respucci, displayed at one of the Apple stores in New York (not The One on Fifth Avenue) last weekend, is shaped like a piano and has a dock for your iPod and a couple of amplified speakers flush-mounted underneath the lid. It’s multifunctional, too, where you can use it as a desk and when you’re done, stash your laptop underneath that lid.
With this table, Lovegrove and Respucci say you’ll be able to enjoy the “dramatic presence that a piano offers an interior.” But this is not really a piano, so maybe it’s not really that dramatic.

iPod and iBook Cost Comparison Around The World
If you’re in Buenos Aires and you want to buy an iPod, don’t head down to your local store. Instead, find someone in New York to buy one for you and mail it.
BusinessWeek’s did a comparison on various costs in various countries. You may have thought that Apple’s iPod Nano costs the same around the world as it does here in the US. Actually, the $249 player would cost you $592 in Argentina, $286 in London, $248 in Tokyo, $299 in Shanghai and $299 in Moscow.
The iBook is similar, with NYC still coming in cheapest at $999 and Buenos Aires topping the charts for a whopping $1480.

iPod on Wheels: Mitsubishi “i” Play Edition
Even though we are quite fond of Mitsubishi’s “i” car, our Gizmodo soul takes a special liking to the iPod nano receptacle within its Play Edition. Slide the nano into the appropriately-sized slot and then you can control it from the navigation screen’s touch panel.
Choose white or black to match your nano, and listen to your tunes with six speakers. The car starts selling today in Japan for $14,500; there’s no word if it will be available in the states. Never mind the car, we just want that plug-in iPod interface, preferably one that will also work with larger iPods.

Learn Foreign Languages on Your iPod With iLingo

Yeah. There’s two packs, a Euro 2.0 pack, which includes French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, and an Asia 2.0 pack, which includes Cantonese, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin Chinese. The audio files were all recorded by native speakers, so there’s no worry of sounding like a dork when trying to pronounce words. Fifth Avenue Apple Store Opening on May 19
Gather ‘round loyal consumers, there’s a new Apple Store opening in just a few days. That’s right, on May 19, Apple is hosting the grand opening of its flagship retail store on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. There’ll be cool prizes, plastered with the familiar Apple logo, of course, since you’re a human billboard now; be one of the first to proudly wear a t-shirt that you got from the store’s opening.
This really is something special since it’s not like Fifth Avenue has many high-end stores or anything. Still, since it’s a rule that we treat Apple with kid gloves all the time, we look forward to the opening of this new brick and mortar outlet. Now let’s all think inside the box. Right. The NBA will be making available full games and its post game analysis shows, such as Inside the NBA on TNT for this year’s playoffs within 24 hours of the games’ conclusions for $1.99 each. There’s also a $9 team replay package that contains highlights of your favorite team’s performance throughout the year. More on Amazon’s Music Service
The world was a-flutter a few weeks back about Amazon’s music service and now we have some proof that it will be available very soon. In short, Amazon is creating a music store and branded MP3 players aka iPod-killer (*snort*). This is all very potential and unconfirmed, but let’s give our source the benefit of the doubt.
Amazon is taking a four-pronged approach to this:
1. Desktop app/web app for full music downloads, album and a la carte.
2. Rhapsody-style subscritpion service using Janus (??) DRM.
3. 20% off physical CDs for service subscribers.
4. WMV downloads of CDs until the physical CD arrives for non-subscribers.
They will also offer pre-loaded devices full of specific content. Amazon has a lot of muscle in the CD space, but oh-so-very-little in the digital music world. This plan, however, seems like a good one. What thinks ye?

iPod Audio Navigation Patent
As iPods are further integrated into cars, there’s a danger of users T-Boning some poor salary man because they were putting on “In the Air Tonight” instead of paying attention to the road.
Now Apple releases a patent for the iPod that tags each song, genre, artist, actor, and other relevant info with their audible equivalent. This means when you’re navigating the menus, the iPod speaks the name of the item you’re on so you never have to look down. Useful and safe.
But, er, Apple? The least you could do is spell Phil Collins’ name correctly. Now he’s going to drown you and sing about it at a concert. That’s so true.

Two guys trapped in a Tasmanian mine have been waiting for more than a week to be rescued, and they’re wiling away the hours listening to iPods lowered into their small cage wedged underneath 36 feet of rock.
They have about 48 more hours to wait before rescuers will be able to free them, receiving food, water, dry clothes and blankets along with portable entertainment until then. So what songs do you think are on their playlists? “Working in a Coal Mine”? “Coal Miner’s Daughter”?

iHome iH36W Fills Your Kitchen With Music
The makers of everybody’s favorite iPod-compatable alarm clock, the iHome, has released a new iPod docking station designed to accentuate the flair of your kitchen. The iHome iH36W is your standard alarm clock chock full of alarm clock features, such as FM radio, TV audio and those crazy weather bulletin channels, but with the added bonus of being able to dock onto an iPod.
The difference between the iH36 and its older brethren is that the iH36 is designed to be installed under a cabinet, making it perfect for kitchens and the like. Of course, the iPod charges while it’s plugged in. To top it all off, there’s even a motorized drawer that hides the iPod so as not to ruin the aesthetic of your carefully-designed kitchen. The iHome iH36, which is also compatible with the oft-neglected Shuffle, runs $199.99.
