Robot iPod Dock-on-Wheels

robotdock.jpgSince I’m the only one on the staff with an even basic knowledge of the language of Camões (Portuguese, kids), I come baring news on an robot-like device that works with the iPod. Given the name Miuro (it stands for music innovation based on utility robot technology), it’s a small, ball-shaped iPod dock that rolls around on wheels. At the top of the ball is a slot for the iPod, which users can control with a remote control. Kenwood speakers line the outside of the robot, and can wireless play music saved on a nearby computer.

iWood Red, Wooden iPod Case For The U2 iPod

iwoodred.jpgMiniot, the same company that brought us all sorts of wooden iPod accessories, is at it again, this time with an eye toward Bono and the Edge. The iWood Red is made from padouk wood, giving it a reddish tint, hence matching the U2 edition of the iPod. Like previous iWoods, the iWood Red can be outfitted with a monogram of your choice along with two lines of text. Magnets hold the sides of the wooden case shut and it comes in a sturdy box with a free bon bon thrown in for good measure.

World Exclusive Bosch Power Box iPod Dock Reviewed (Vedict: Wowz0r!)

customer_bupoto_images_items_BOSPBA100D_l.jpgThis be it, the very first images you will see ever of the Bosch Power Box PB10-CD iPod Boombox. Just look at it, it is simply breathtaking and it plays back music all good-like. It has a roll cage for sakes, it has to be amazing. Are you impressed yet? You should be because nobody has ever seen anything quite like this. It does something with an iPod, I think. But who cares? Look at it! It’s beautiful!

Bosch Power Box iPod Dock: Proof That Size Does Matter

boschipod_thang.jpgWhat the heck is the deal with this Bosch Power Box iPod dock? Deflecting onlookers from its intended purpose, this contraption looks like it could be used to trigger 50s-era nuclear weapons rather than just power and protect a stoopid iPod. But then, we’re fed up with iPods anyway, so anything that would vaporize them all would be a welcome respite from having to write about them day in and day out.

Apparently designed for a he-man jobsite, the docking case can not only charge that beloved music player, it’s supposed to protect the thing from shock and movement, too. But what? Are you going to be playing soccer with your precious little iPod, kicking it around with reckless abandon? Remember, you paid hundreds of dollars for it.

So if you feel like kicking around that iPod, the CD-player-packing boom box is going to cost you $170. Plus, you’ll have to drop $40 on the iPod adapter kit. Or hey, just leave your iPod at home and hum all those tunes to yourself at the jobsite. The neighbors will thank you.

Bosch Power Box iPod Dock For (Wannabe) Tough Gys

boschipod.jpgIt’s been a while since we’ve covered an iPod dock (or maybe it just seems that way), but Bosch’s recently introduced Power Box iPod Dock at least looks different. Housed in a protective roll cage—Bosch is also in the power tools business—the Power Box both recharges your iPod and provides the rock quarry with all the Ace of Base it can handle.

It appears, though, that the Power Box is a little too simple for today’s iPod market: when you consider that you have to first purchase Bosch’s Power Box and then the separate iPod dock compnent, you’ll eventually start wondering why you’re going through all those hoops for just to get your iPod connected.

Still, if you like pretending to be rugged and the name Bosch appeals to you, be prepared to spend some $170 on the Power Box itself, then an additional $40 on the iPod adapter kit.

Airplane Toilet IPod Causes Chaos

ipod-small.jpgA poster on the Word of Warcraft forums claims that he accidentally dropped his iPod into the toilet of an airplane on a flight to Canada, and one of the stewardesses found it. This then triggered a series of events that lead to an emergency landing, the passengers being evacuated and him spending several hours being grilled by the authorities. At the risk of spoiling the ending, it all turned out allright in the end, but he doesn’t say if he took the, erm, soiled iPod back. Personally, I’d just write it off to experience and buy a non-flushed one.

iCush-100 Gaming Chair Heats and Massages Your Tush

iCush.jpgHow’s do you improve on a gaming chair with speakers in it? Add a buttock warmer and massager. What better way to rub out stress developed after a long day of blowing away aliens with your gauss rifle. Leave it to a company called “Ho Medics”. Oh, Home Dics. Wait..never mind.

The chair’s 10 massaging elements can be set in a pattern that goes up and down your spine and butt, or can be set to go off all at once. And the vibration function also can sync up with the boom from your games. Good for gaming, better for watching porn. $120, this Fall.(Magic fingers really are magic.)

Olympus Stylus 1000, 750, 740, and 730 Cameras

1000_front.jpg

Olympus just dropped a load of really nice digicams on us about 5 minutes ago. Without delay, here are the best four of the new Stylus cameras:

Stylus 1000:

This slim-ish camera is a 10Mpixel point and shoot, a weather proof design, and an ISO light sensitivity of 6400, which is great news for all of you who don’t like the overblown lighting you get with flash photography. With a 3x telescoping lens, a 2.5-inch LCD, an f2.8 lens, digital image stabilization, the cam goes for about $400 when it hits in September. Jump for information and photos of the 1000’s siblings.

Stylus750_HeadOn.jpg

Stylus 750:

This is the one I’d get. Slim, 7Mpixels, 5x optical zoom, with both mechanical and digital image stabilization. It also has the same weather proof design as the 1000, and the same price. You only get an ISO of 2500, which is very respectable for a slim cam, but that’s nowhere near big brother’s nightvision.

001_Stylus740RtAngle.jpg

Stylus 740:

Like the 750, but without mechanical image stabilizing. Carry on, nothing to see here.

Stylus730_RtAngle.jpg

Stylus 730:

Pretty! This little gem of a camera probably employs the same prism-based, periscope like internal lens system as the Minolta Dimage cams. Less than an inch thick, with 7Mpixels, a 3-inch screen, 3x zoom, all for $400.

All cameras use the craptastic xD memory card format, and can shoot 640 by 480 video, with sound, at 30 frames per second.

Microsoft Habu Gaming Mouse Tracks Motion to 20Gs and Glows Crazy Blue

mouse1.jpgMicrosoft can’t write operating systems, but they sure as hell can make mice. I love me some M$ft ergos, yes sir. Razer, on the other hand is known for making insanely accurate mice for gamers, with thousands of dots of resolution on their optical sensors. Here’s a mouse they’ve worked on together.

The Habu has 2,000 dots of resolution per inch in its digital eye. The 16-bit optical sensor tracks movement up to 45 feet per second, or up to 20Gs of acceleration. also The feet are teflon, which isn’t such a rare thing these days. And the 7 buttons can be programmed with up to 5 game profiles. Side bumpers can be swapped out for smaller and larger ones, to fit any hand. The Always-On mode gives it little latency. We think that means it never goes to sleep, like many gamers we know. And yes, it actually glows all crazy blue like that.

Walt Mossberg Tests High Tech Pooper

Toilet-Seat-Mossberg-Boehre.jpgThe WSJ’s esteemed Walt and Katie testing digital toilet seats? What’s the scoop? The Brondell Swash 800 is a toilet seat cover that gently washes and air dries your tushy, and has a heated seat to make your duty (heh) more bearable on cold mornings. So, what does the world’s most respected gadget journalist say about poop tech?

“Most people use toilets more often than iPods…”

Walt, that’s totally up for debate. I want a fact check on that one, Walt.

And for his verdict: “We found that the heated seat, which can be set to automatically turn off or on at certain times of the day, was a great feature. And the warm water — once we got the temperature right — was also a luxurious twist on the normal bathroom experience. But, while the water was nice, the dryer was awful. It works only at one temperature and speed, and it didn’t do the trick for us.”

Didn’t do the trick? Does he mean the dreaded swamp butt? Good to know before we dropped $800 on the Brondell Swash.

One more thing… who took notes during this assignment? And were those notes on toilet paper? Diagram of the seat, after the jump.

Asus AiGuru S1 Wireless Skype Phone

aiguru.jpgAsus is trying to take advantage of Skype’s popularity with the AiGuru S1, a handset that’s compatible with the VoIP service using 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. Once the AiGuru is plugged into a PC, it’s able to tap into Skype, be it checking your contacts or making a call to the pizza guy. Unlike other Skype phones that have been released, this one really isn’t a “set it and forget it” device in that you can’t just connect to any Wi-Fi network and start yapping. Nope, customized software is needed, and a little dongle connected to the USB port of your PC is what provides the wireless signal that the phone connects to.

Because of the way the phone works, Asus was able to have it stream music from Windows Media Player, which perhaps isn’t the most useful of features, but it’s a nice addition nonetheless.

Expect to pay around $130 for the AiGuru.

Creative Zen Vision W Unofficially Unveiled

czenvisionw.jpgA shiny picture of the Creative Zen Vision W found its way into the latest issue of Popular Mechanics, marking yet another time that a Create portable media player had its premature unveiling in the print press (we’re looking at you, Maxim). The “W” stands for widescreen, and the 4.3-inch display is a nice upgrade from the 3.7-inch from the current Zen Vision. Popular Mechanics went so far as to say that it “has the best screen we’ve seen on a portable media player.” This dream PMP will come in two sizes, a 30GB and a 60GB version.

What does the Zen Vision W actually play? Again, according to Popular Mechanics, “every format we’ve thrown at it,” which apparently includes several incarnations of Divx and MPEG.

Creative still hasn’t officially announced prices nor a release date, but the magazine blurb points to a $399 price tag for the 30GB and a $499 price tag for the 40GB.

Xecuter X360 USB Flashes Xbox 360 Firmware, Backs Up Game Saves

x360usb.jpgThe Xbox 360 hasn’t been cracked per se, but the scene has made some pretty good progress since the first firmware hacks were released earlier in the year, the latest of which is the X360. Developed by Team Xecuter (think of them as the elder statesman of the Xbox scene), the X360 allows users to connect the Xbox 360’s hard drive and DVD drive (the HITACHI-LG GDR-3120L drive only, right now) to a PC using a USB 2.0 connection. More importantly, it permits dangerously easily DVD drive firmware flashing since you no longer have to mess around with SATA connections. Of course, you wouldn’t be flashing the DVD drive to play backups or anything like that. That’d be silly and immoral.

Besides making it easier to flash the DVD drive’s firmware, the X360 lets you back up data from the Xbox 360’s hard drive to your PC, so in case something happens to your 360’s hard drive, you’ll always have a copy of the data on hand.

The X360 isn’t available just yet, but it will be very shortly. Team Xecuter estimates that it’ll cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $44.95 on all the popular unofficial accessory online stores.

UBiQUiO 501 Cookie Cutter Pocket PC Smartphone

uibquio501.jpgHappy day, another smartphone is being released, this time from Tech Faith Wireless. Given the 1337 name of the UBiQUiO 501, it’s a Pocket PC-based smartphone with the familiar 2.5-inch QVGA touch screen input and built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. Onboard you’ll only find 64MB of memory, which makes the miniSD card slot something more of a necessity than a fanciful little bonus. Oh, and it has a QWERTY keyboard. Swish!

The UBiQUiO 501 runs on GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz networks; noticibly absent is support for the high speed EDGE network. It’ll retail for just over $600 when it’s released.

Gizmodo Seeks Senior Editor in NY

reporter.pngMan, the BoingBoing crew is fast. They somehow blogged a Gizmodo job posting before we did. Weird.

I’m looking for someone with hustle, and solid contacts in the gadget world. Someone who is technical, but can still write around the jargon. Someone who has a good sense of humor, a strong work ethic, and a competitive streak. Someone who has a few years of magazine experience, but isn’t scared of the blogging pace. Someone who can spot news fast, and has an innate ability to write strong headlines and leads. Someone in NY, who can spearhead the day, hit up the NY junkets, and help manage our NY writer and intern. One caveat: The job does come with a boss who runs the site like it’s a sailboat driving hard against tide and weather. It’s just more fun that way.

If you fit those requirements, please send me your resume, a few fake-blog posts, and a nice little cover letter. Put “Senior Editor” in the subject head if you ever want me to read it. And if you’re not in NY, but you’re going to the CEDIA Expo next month, drop me a line anyhow.

Gamepark GP2X Available in U.S.

imgGP2X_1.jpgWait, wait, wait. Stop the presses—we don’t actually use presses, but you know what I mean—something a bit epic is happening here. Remember the Gamepark GP2X? Yeah, that Korean game and portable media player. Well, it is coming to the states, baby. This is probably the first Korean gadget in the history of the world to actually make it to the states—not really, but with the mass amount of Korea-only gadgets coming out, it seems like it.

For a refresher, the GP2X shines because it is actually powered by Linux and encourages home-brew creations. It also includes a video player capable of MPEG, MPEG-4, DivX and XviD playback via SD memory. Dynamism is the lovely company making this device available to the U.S., and they are hocking it for $200. Not too shabby for a PMP and a gaming handheld.

The little life savers, such as they are, will go on sale in Japan next month for the paltry sum of just less than $15 and will come in the five fruity colors (and transparent) you see here.

Gizmodo Frankenreview: TomTom One

1one%203-4%20new%20york.jpgThe TomTom One is a car GPS small enough to fit in a largish pocket. We gathered the review scores from across the net, crunched them into a gazillion bacon-bits using the Gizmodo supercomputer and put them into a chart: as the awesome CGI indicates, the TomTom One is a stellar GPS navigator for its price. We apologize for any server lagging this may have caused. After the jump, see every picture we could find of the TomTom one, and read our Frankenreview patched together from the best parts of PCworld, PC Mag, CNet, and T3’s writeups. (We read, so you don’t have to.)

TomTomOneGraph.jpg

Frankenreviewer says:

-”The TomTom One features a supersleek design”

-”…it fits unobtrusively in your pants pocket”

-But what if we could use a little extra down there?

-”…you might expect certain corners to have been cut. You’d be wrong.”

-”…all the maps of the United States and Canada are preloaded on the included 1GB SD card”

-”…packed with customization and other options…”

-True, though no text-to-voice function is sort of a biggie.

-”…took just a few seconds to calculate my test routes…”

“It even knew when to avoid major arteries in the city, choosing faster alternatives on surface streets by default.”

“…keeps track of your position in conditions where earlier-generation receivers would have lost signal completely.”

Like when you are really lost? Tom Hanks making out with a volleyball lost?

-” You can even get bicycle and walking routes.”

That’s a great tourist feature. Cities should rent them.

-”…a simple solution for getting from point A to point B.”

-”…portable enough, accurate enough, easy enough, customizable enough, and–most important–cheap enough…”

Enough.

Tuning Fork: Dell’s HDTV Predicament

dell-w1900-neu.jpg

Selling TVs is a Tough Job

By Brian L. Clark

For those readers who’ve been living in a cave, the last few weeks have been earnings weeks, that time each quarter when corporations announce earnings, compare them to analysts’ estimates, and either puff out their chests or duck for cover. Well, this week it was Dell’s turn, and the news was not very good.

To make matters worse, last week the company recalled some 4 million Sony-made batteries that could spontaneously combust and announced it had been cooperating with an “informal” investigation by the SEC. In all, it was an extremely forgettable week for the nation’s second-largest PC maker.

What does this have to do with TV, you ask?

Well, all that bad news made me wonder why tech companies like Dell are still in the highly competitive HDTV business. Shouldn’t these companies learn something from Gateway’s forgettable foray, particularly given today’s corporate focus on cutting divisions that drag on the bottom line? Would they be better off focusing on their core business? More importantly, should I even consider buying a TV from a company that might not be selling them a year from now?

When Dell announced its intent to enter the business, analysts figured its mass production, cost-cutting, direct-to-consumer model would gain the company a foothold and bring downward price pressure on the market. Unlike PCs however, TVs are not commodities–they really need to be seen. As a result, the direct-to-consumer model is not conducive to selling televisions.

For its part, Dell says it is “very committed to our television business,” adding “Dell is very much driven to deliver what our customers tell us they want. It is one of the benefits of our direct model–direct customer feedback in real time.” I could be wrong, but it’s hard to imagine Dell is overrun with customers begging them to sell TVs. Just the same, the company is not planning to do so without a slight change to its business model. Dell now has 175 kiosks around the country and is in the process of opening two Dell Direct stores where people can see the sets in action.

Unfortunately, the Dell price influence hasn’t really materialized in the TV market. In fact, go to Dell’s site and you’ll find a 37-inch LCD for $1,799. Go to Amazon and you’ll find a 37-inch Sharp Aquos–which you can also see at your local CE store–for less than $1,700. Few consumers, given the choice of buying a more expensive TV sight unseen from a PC maker or purchasing one from a reputable CE maker, are going to opt for the former.

For other manufacturers, the big issue is shelf space. Getting just a little bit for your product at larger CE stores is a hell of a lot of work–manufacturers really have to convince these people products will be around for the long haul. I know this is true because I did some work for a PR agency that represented the consumer electronics division at a major technology manufacturer. Frankly, the division was so small and brought in so little revenue to this giant company that the constant concern was whether it would be around next year. Everything hinged on shelf space and if the retail folks couldn’t get it, the division would die.

Just how important are the home entertainment divisions to these companies? Watch reports on CNBC. Whenever there’s an earnings announcement, you won’t hear one word about the digital entertainment divisions. It’s three years since Dell and other tech companies entered the CE business and still, they get virtually no play.

Frankly, I don’t see how these companies can continue to compete against the likes of Sony, Samsung, Sharp or Panasonic. Selling TVs is a tough job and these days PC makers are so focused on their low-margin core businesses, I have to think the focus shifts to software or business services, driving the stepchild even further from the parent. How do these companies gracefully exit a business they never should have entered in the first place?

We may find out sooner than we think.

But, if you’re more into having one of these as a fashion statement, look no further than the Pasha De Cartier USB stick. Made of stainless steel and engraved with the same numbers as the Pasha watches, this USB stick will both hold your data and make you look like a guy with too much money.

We’re not sure how much this costs exactly, but it’s probably too much.

Sony Vaio 10th Anniversary Special Edition Notebooks

Sony-vaio-10th-anniversary.jpgSony launched their first Vaio computer 10 years ago: the PCV-90, which ran Windows 95 and had a 200-MHz processor. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, they are offering a number of limited edition model notebooks: they will only make 500 of each of the five colorful designs. That’s perhaps a blessing, as they look a bit like they were designed by a 10-year old. Trivia time: did you know that the Vaio logo was designed to mimic the transition from analog to digital?

Back-to-School Twofer: Kensington Notebook Expansion Dock and Ci600 Wireless Mouse Reviewed

dock-main.jpgListen up you dorm rats; I know you are coming back. I see you walking in flocks around my beloved town and overcrowding the good restaurants. With campuses around the nation getting loaded up with Wi-Fi internet access it is pretty important to have a notebook to keep you entertained in class with Facebook, Myspace and online poker. But taking the notebook back into your 5-foot by 5-foot dorm and plugging everything back in is a pain in the ass, so Kensington has the perfect solution for you with their Notebook Expansion Dock with Video. Hit the jump for the review along with a review of the Ci60 Wireless Optical Mouse.

The Notebook Expansion Dock with Video from Kensington is the perfect solution for anyone who lives off their laptop. One of the biggest perks is that it has video output, therefore a perfect candidate for my Dell Inspiron 700m with a measly 12-inch display.

dock-elevate.jpgThe dock is roughly 10 inches long and has expansion for 1 ethernet port, 1 VGA display, 4 USB ports, 1 microphone port and 1 speaker port. It is powered by an AC adapter and connects to the laptop with a single USB connection. The form of the dock is built to actually elevate the laptop. There is a piece of gripping material on the topside of the dock that held my laptop in place.

dock-overview.jpgAs you can see from the above picture, I loaded up the dock with devices and began playing. I had it plugged into the network, going out to an LCD display, had a headset plugged into the audio and had a keyboard, Kensington Ci60 wireless mouse, SanDisk Titanium Cruzer and an iPod dock plugged into the device.

After the initial driver installation from Kensington, all of the plugged in devices worked seamlessly. Windows would discover a new device and install the drivers for it, this was only done the first time new devices were plugged in. The display also worked well. It supports resolution up to 1280 x 1024 in 24-bit color. I tried watching movies and they played back fine without any kind of lag frame skipping.

This dock did the job it was built to do. And it is universal, to boot. No need to order a custom dock for your laptop, all you need I a USB port. It does carry a bit of a high price tag ($180), but it may be worth it if you take your laptop goes everywhere with you.

Verdict: Get’s the job done.

Kensington Ci60 Optical Wireless Mouse

dock-mouse.jpgAlong with the Notebook Expansion Dock, I gave Kensington’s latest wireless optical mouse a test run. This mouse optical mouse operates off of two AA batteries and communicates with a dongle-sized USB adapter. It has five buttons and a scroll wheel.

Surprisingly it had a quick response time, even wirelessly. Kensington said this is due to the QuickRF wireless technology. During my tests it had a wireless range of 4-6 feet, which is pretty unfortunate. But the QuickRF technology kept the mouse responding quickly all the way until it went out of range and stopped completely.

Also included in this mouse is “Diamond Eye Precision” technology. I’m not sure really what that means, but I guess I didn’t do enough intense mousing to notice it. Preceision and accuracy was pretty average or below average. Maybe I was just not used to the quick RF response and “over-moused” my target.

The mouse fit the hand nicely and has soft honeycomb-style grips on the sides. The five buttons are programmable via Kensington’s MouseWorks software. Overall the mouse was a bit to lightweight for my likings, but that preference just depends on the person. This mouse retails for $30, which isn’t too bad for a decent wireless mouse.

Verdict: It’s aight. Good wireless response time, but would like to see better range.

Xbox Live Vision Camera Actually On Sale At Select Toys R Us Stores

xboxlivevisioncam2.jpgApparently, that Xbox Live Vision camera that was sold from Toys R Us was actually meant to be sold. A reader says she went to Toys R Us and spoke with a manager, who said select stores in LA, NY, and other major cities are selling these a month early in order for Microsoft to test market the new camera before it’s widely sold.

She also says that the managers and store employees don’t know which stores have them in stock, so they can’t help you. Are any readers in the LA or NY area and can run down to their local TRU and let us know if it’s in stock?

Well, it looks like they’re all over ebay, going for around $100.

SIRIUS Conductor Unveiled

sirius_conductor.jpgWe first heard word about the SIRIUS Conductor last week after the exclusive SIRIUS press event that bloggers were not invited to, sad face. We heard about the SIRIUS Conductor, some kind of crazy home satellite radio receiver. It confused the hell out of me, but now more information, including pictures, has surfaced making the Conductor a lot more simple than I was expecting.

The SIRIUS Conductor consists of two devices, a tuner and an uber-remote. The tuner plugs into any stereo system. Then the remote does the rest of the magic. It is a 6-in-1 remote that has an LCD screen to display the satellite radio PAD data. This could be extra awesome for houses with audio setups throughout the entire house because the remote has a range of 150 feet. The conductor will be available in November for $150.

Microsoft Zune Has No Audible Support - Yet

audibledotcom.gifAs of right now, it seems Microsoft and Audible haven’t reached an agreement to allow the former’s portable music players to play the latter’s book-on-tape files. For those unfamiliar with the Zune (pictures and details here), it’s a hard drive based music player from Microsoft that’s launching this November. Audible is an online book store affiliated with Amazon, which only allows approved music players to play back their media files.

So far Microsoft hasn’t gotten Audible’s approval for their Zune, but they’re still in talks. Even though we personally don’t use Audible, we’re sure it’s a deal breaker for people who do. There’s three months left until launch, so Microsoft has plenty of time to wave money in Audible’s face to get them on board.

Gateway NX100X Ultraportable Reviewed (Verdict: Thin, Small and Relatively Inexpensive)

gateway-nx100x.jpgAlthough the Gateway NX100X Ultraportable is heavier than the 2.2lb Fujitsu Lifebook 2010, its 3.15lb body is still light enough to take around with you everywhere. And at a price of $1399, it’s cheaper than comparable laptops like the Thinkpad X60 as well.

The Gateway comes with a Core Solo U1400, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive and an external DVD burner. It’s got a 12-inch screen, 6-cell battery (compared to 3 or 4-cell batteries competitors have), Firewire 400, USB 2.0, WiFi, Bluetooth, 6-in-1 media card reader, and Gigabit Ethernet—all of which may not even been in laptops that aren’t ultraportables!

Not only are the features great, Digital Trends also liked the keyboard and was able to get up to 140 wpm on it, faster than any other notebook they’ve reviewed. The reviewers opted for the 3-cell battery instead of the 6-cell, and only managed to squeeze 1 hour and 37 minutes out of the battery. Pretty damn low. Even at twice that in the 6-cell battery, it would be pretty low for a notebook these days. But the other features like the glossy screen, heat management, and exceptional build quality made up for the low battery life.

Gadgets In Space

sts121-eva.jpgIt’s no surprise that NASA has all of the best gadgets, and they’ll be using some of them for the forthcoming flight of the Space Shuttle Atlantis to the International Space Station, which is scheduled for launch on the 27th.

For one they’ll be using a camera on the end of the Shuttle’s 50-foot long robot arm to examine the shuttle’s heat shield for any damage, and then they’ll be using the same arm to maneuver a 17.5-ton truss into place, adding more solar panels. Then two astronauts will use their hi-tech spacesuits to take a stroll into space to prepare for the unfurling of the new 240-foot long solar panels. All this at an altitude of 220 miles and a speed of 27,000 miles per hour Meanwhile, at an altitude of about 5 feet, I am having trouble building an Ikea bookshelf. I wonder if NASA could give me hand?

GigaView HDD Multimedia Player

gigaview.jpgThe GigaView is a 3.5-inch hard drive enclosure that lets you display the digital media contents of your hard drive on a TV. Once you’ve inserted a hard drive (or memory card) into the GigaView, simply hook the box up to a TV using one of the included cables and let the multimedia madness ensue. It’s able to play back all the formats that make trolling through Usenet and IRC worth while, such as the myriad forms of Divx and MPEG, though it’s audio playback seems to be limited to only MP3.

The GigaView supports hard drives up to 400GB in size, certainly more than enough to hold a couple of silver screen masterpieces (and photo slideshows, and home movies…). Able to output a video signal through standard RCA cables, S-Video and VGA, the GigaView is compatible with both PAL and NTSC TV formats. Happy day!

The GigaView certainly isn’t the only hard drive enclosure/media player on the market, nor is it as feature-filled, but for only around $75, it wouldn’t make a bad addition to one of the bedrooms. Besides, anybody’s who’s anybody is already running a home theater PC in their den of multimedia marvels.

Sharp’s Dangerously Skinny SX633 Cellphone

sharpsx633.jpgSharp’s getting into the cellphone game even deeper with the SX633, a 0.7-inch thick, 3.7-ounce clamshell that operates on the tried and true GSM standard. In an effort to stand out from the other six zillion cellphones released on a daily basis, the keypad is of the stainless steel variety, so make sure not to get it wet. Since it’s a Sharp product, they’ve attached their wondrous Aquos brand name onto the cellphone’s 2.2-inch display.

Of course, since nobody wants a cellphone that’s just able to reliably make and receive phone calls, Sharp’s tacked on many of the standard multimedia features cluttering cellphone design, among them, MPEG-4 video playback and and MP3/AAC audio playback. You can even record up to six hours of video in the aforementioned MPEG-4 format. Since it only includes 20MB of built-in memory, you might want to consider throwing in a microSD card while you’ve got the chance.

Be prepared to spend more than $500 if you’re looking to import Sharp’s latest clamshell from Hong Kong.

Sony Paints the Town Pink With Its PSP This October

pinksonypsp.jpgSomeone must have given control of Sony’s design department to Barbie with word that they’ll be releasing a pink version of their somewhat underwhelming PSP in October. This coincides with yesterday’s announcement that they’ll be releasing a pink PS2 in the fall as well. Looks like Sony’s crack research department has figured out that the way to get more girl gamers is to paint everything pink. Way to put your thinking hat on, guys.

The pink PSP will be of the value pack variety, meaning that, in addition to getting a device that doesn’t know if it’s a portable gaming console or a portable media player, you’ll also receive a pair of white headphones, a pouch, a wrist strap and a whopping 32MB Memory Stick Duo. Lastly, it seems that the singer Pink will be lending her good name to this PSP with the inclusion of her latest music videos on UMD.

Right now, the pink PSP is Euroland-only, but if you’re on the Old Continent, expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $320 for it.

BlackBerry 8703e Dated for August 28, Pictures Leaked; Verizon Supporting GSM?

vzwblackbery8703e.jpgSharp eyes have spotted the upcoming BlackBerry 8703e in the wild and the latest rumors point to a next week release date, August 28. There’s also rumblings of the device supporting GSM/EDGE for roaming purposes and support for CDMA-friednly Verizon’s high speed labor of love, EV-DO. The rumored inclusion of support for both CDMA and GSM is fairly important, since it gives people the flexibility to move to and fro without worrying if their smartphone will function properly, if at all, on the local network.

The fact that the 8703e hasn’t publicly received the FCC’s go-ahead is somewhat odd, but that could be chalked up to Verizon Wireless and RIM, maker of the BlackBerry, wanting to create an even bigger “ta-da!” when it’s actually released. Time will tell whether this is just careless conjecture or something more substantive.

UPDATE: What’s that saying, something like, if something seems too good to be true it probably is? Late word now indicates that the 8703e will not support GSM after all. So all that pretty text up there speaking highly of that capability? Ignore it, she’s CMDA-only. Rumors, fun to pass around until someone gets their head smashed into a locker. Sony Ericsson Launches Z610i Complete With Mirror-Like Finish

z610i.jpgJust officially unveiled in London a short while ago, the Sony Ericsson Z610i is being positioned as the cellphone perfect for people who expect a little more out of their cellphone than just the basic features. To that end, the Z610i, looking at the stats alone, does a fairly decent job. The 2-megapixel camera isn’t a piece of junk like most cellphone cameras and its 2-inch, 220×176 pixel resolution display, while not ground-breaking, gets the job done admirably. Besides, the Z610i’s has a mirror-like finish, which is just the type of thing that cellphone’s have been lacking: more tacky aesthetic devices.

On the multimedia front, the Z610i also tries to perform like a champ; never having used it, I can’t say for sure one way or another. There’s support for MP3, AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+ digital audio files and pictures taken using the aforementioned camera can be uploaded to a Photo Blog application (”this is when the cops showed up…”). Sony Ericsson graciously includes a 64MB Memory Stick Mico (M2), but users can plug in cards up to 1GB in size. She even reads RSS feeds.

Apple Releases Report on iPod Sweatshop Factory Conditions

ipodnano3_wideweb__430x366%2C0-thumb.jpgIf you recall, in June Apple was under fire about allegations that their manufacturing facilities in China are working under sweatshop-like conditions. They launched a full-blown investigation into the matter and released their report yesterday. The findings: the Apple manufacturing facilities are a good place to work.

The audit found no underage workers, many requests for overtime and also found that all employees received at least local minimum wage, while at least half received over that. The most interesting finding is that the facilities offer dormitories for employees to live in, rent-free, along with recreation facilities, cafeterias, lounges, Internet cafes, a post office, a hospital, a supermarket and even a freaking swimming pool. Sounds like a pretty good place to work, in China at least.

So, uh, Gawker. You guys going to pay for my rent and hook me up with a sweet swimming pool?

iTunes Movie Store Expected to Launch Later This Year Says Movie Studio

itunesmovie.jpgUp until now, pretty much everyone has assumed that Apple would be coming out with some sort to movie store to accompany the launch of its next generation iPod. It seems that Lions Gate Films, which was responsible for popular films like Crash and Dogma, recently admitted to the existence of an iTunes Movie Store. The movie house’s CEO let slip that they “have digital delivery deals in place with Cinema Now, MovieLink, and iTunes” and that he thinks it will launch “most likely some time before the end of the year.” Wait, I think I hear Steve Jobs firing people right now.

If our spies are correct, the next generation iPod should be available this November, complete with the much-ballyhooed touch screen.

USB Geek MP3 Player: So Cheap, It’s Almost Disposable

cheap_mp3.jpgThose of us who have kids nagging them for an iPod will be happy to see this $15 MP3 player, enough to keep those wee ones happy for hours on end. How many hours? Well, you’ll get 10 hours of music playback on one AAA battery. This thing is so cheap, the SD/MMC memory card you insert inside will cost more than the player itself.

Looks like it’s pretty easy to use too, with simple transport controls on the side. Pop the cap and it’s a USB thumb drive. Although it’s not the lowest-priced MP3 player we’ve seen, it’s just about cheap enough to be disposable; might want to get a half-dozen, enough to give one to each of your kids (that you’re aware of).

Remember the Hi-Fi iPod speaker system from Apple? Yeah the same speaker system that caused riots in Apple stores nationwide. The one that was being hocked for thousands of dollars on the black market because they were in such demand. Yeah, that one. Well, Griffin has released a carrying case for this speaker dock. The Griffin Hi-Way (how cute) carrying case can protect the Hi-Fi from all the elements. Some of the best headphones have the most subdued design, their brand name or model number being sufficient to inform those who care of the quality behind them. Ultrasone’s iCans are not this sort of headphone, but then again, no one mistakes an iPod for anything else, either.

Wannabe : iPod Clone from China

We got this from China while we went there for holiday last weekend. Its an iPod wannabe and should we say its clone iPod? It has the same control wheel like iPod but it doesnt have any touch sensor technology. It doesnt state product name on it but only “MP4 Digital Player”. We tried it and it doesnt even support MP4 file for god sake! It has quite number of function in it; Music Player, Video Player, FM Radio, Picture, Voice Recording, Text Reading, Phone Book and a number of games. More info and pictures after the break.

Its has only 256MB of internal memory and its not expandable because it doesnt have any extra slot for memory card. As listed on the manual book, it supports various music formats of MP1, MP2, MP3, WMA, WMV, ASF and WAV. It has a unique movie function of AMV. It also stated that their USB2.0(FS) has the fastest transfer speed in the whole world with 5000kbps. We are amaze at first but when we tried it, its damn slow! Thats how clone stuff works!

Guess what, this MP4 Digital Player only cost us USD13 and its freaking cheap by comparing all the available features with other players. Well, cheap stuff is always that GOOD!

EarMecca EP Series: Earphones and Earrings in One

earring_phones.jpgThe quest for de-uglification of earphones continues, and here’s a pair cleverly disguised as earrings. From EarMecca of Korea, the EP Series Earphones might even appeal to persnickety types. The earrings are available in 10 different designs, are crafted in either gold or silver, and are adjustable even for those ears that hang low and wobble to and fro.

If they sound nearly as good as they look, these designers might be onto something. But then, these graphics we found don’t show what happens to all those wires leading to the music player. Now if they could design these with Bluetooth in each ear … well, we may have to wait a few years for that. Available now in Korea; no word if they will be available in the United States or at what price.

First Pics of Levi’s iPod Jeans

levisipodjeans.jpgThose ridiculous Levi’s iPod Jeans have finally shown their denim faces—or asses, I guess. There’s a big red cable sticking out of the jeans to connect your iPod to, and loads and loads of pockets to hold all your iPod accessories.

The construction worker/carpenter’s pockets we can live with, but that red ribbon is going to get shredded the first time you get it caught on, well, anything. The result: a broken iPod and a snotty-face as you weep for your used-to-be shiny music player.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

ilounge-august-1.jpgThis week at iLounge: Two of Bose’s most famous iPod-compatible products have been challenged by aggressive new alternatives. Still the top-selling iPod speaker dock despite its price, Bose’s $300 all-in-one speaker system SoundDock has two new competitors, both of which we’ve reviewed. Altec Lansing’s M602 is a bigger dock with bass and treble controls, plus all sorts of rear ports that were missing from Bose’s design. And Sonic Impact’s T24 delivers even warmer sound than the SoundDock, with noticeably deeper bass. Both systems are available now for $100 less than the SoundDock — which should you buy?

Hit the jump for all kinds of iGoodness.

Bose’s famous $300 QuietComfort 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones also see two new competitors: one from Logitech, which sells for only $150, but offers comparable noise cancellation and isolation, and another from… Bose. The $350 QuietComfort 3 drops the passive isolating earcups of QC2’s design, in favor of less aggressive “on-ear” phones. We strongly prefer the isolation we receive from in-canal earphones, like Shure’s new E500PTH — an outstanding but expensive new triple-driver design that won over all of iLounge’s editors.

Also: We take two looks at the iPod’s first Karaoke Station, the IPS-11G from CAVS, and come away surprised at how fun iPod karaoke can be (and how horrible our singing is). Our First Look checks out what’s inside the box, while an editorial on our weekend with the Station explains just why karaoke fans might want to carry their favorite singalongs in their pockets. Finally, we look at ATO’s iSee 360i, a weird little 3.5″ screen add-on for some non-video iPods that lets them record and play back video content.

In iPod news this week, Apple firmly defended its iPod and iTunes DRM to Scandinavian regulators, while the French iTunes law went into effect Thursday. Audible extended its partnership with the iTunes Music Store. Coke said it will be giving away 70 million songs in the UK and Germany, while Apple announced that it has sold over 200 million tracks from its European iTunes Music Stores in just over two years. Plus, Ford, GM and Mazda will add iPod integration to their 2007 models, and eMusic moves into No. 2 in digital music sales thanks to the iPod.
