You Can’t Seduce With an iPod, Unless…

2006-09-29-c.jpg

Keira writes in with her essay prepared with the single, gadget-obsessed male in mind. It’s titled “On Gentlemen Giving iPods as Gifts—Keira’s Primer on the Art of Seduction.”

She believes that women do like iPods, but that they do not always make wise gifts, and subsequently, giving one won’t do much to improve your odds of getting laid, unless…

… you do it right.

Although it might make you seem as if you’re well off enough to afford her such a gift—and don’t even think about giving her a shuffle—it might also present the possibility that you’re “lemming-like” in your “willingness to follow trends.”

The somewhat sterile modern lines and minimalist stylings of Apple products also give your Dream Girl no clue as to what precisely it is you mean with your gift– Is this a romantic gesture, an invitation to marriage, an abject apology, offer of sincere friendship, or did you merely receive an extra for your birthday? The blank iPod facade offers no answers. Surely it is now clear to you that the problem with giving the iPod as a gift is that you must personalize it in some way in order for it to be effective as a woo.

I blockquote in great quantity because it couldn’t be said better. Onward.

Should you engrave then? No!

If you could write effectively and beautifully (let alone engraving-worthily), you would have no need to shower gifts upon her in order to gain a lady’s favor. They would be giving iPods to you.

And:

Expressing your Eternal Love on the back of a fancy radio that will (at best) last a few years is not only highly inappropriate as a gesture, it is also trashy, like carving your names into the bark of a tree, or getting a tattoo.

Furthermore:

If you think about it, what you are trying to do is make a better impression; were her immediate impressions of you favorable, you needn’t bother with trinkets, just honest conversation and proficiency at the Intimate Arts. What a woman will seek in examining the contents of the iPod you give her is some knowledge of your Inner Life, described through your tastes, which might help compensate for your Outer Troll. Therefore, consider this as a very large Mix Tape.

Click through to Keira’s site to read how to—and how not—to make such a mix tape.

MusicMug DAP Speakers are Cheaper, More Efficient than Starbucks

ts_mug00.jpgYou may enjoy your quadruple decaf no foam latte deluxe, but can it play some freaking sweet tunes from your iPod or other digital audio player? Hell no! This mug can. The music mug is a bone china coffee mug with a speaker built into the base. It’s just so much cooler than any other iPod dock, even though the playback is probably pretty weak. It is available in white or black for $35 or so, which is pretty good for a powerless DAP dock.

Logitech Free Pulse Bluetooth Headphones Pass FCC World, Proceed to Final Boss

freepulse_logitech.jpgThe Logitech “Free Pulse” headphones kicked everyone’s ass at the FCC and got a delightful approval. These headphones are targeted towards iPod owners—the fact that they are black, not white, threw me off for a second there—and include an adapter that connects to most iPods. The sneaky FCC photo seems to suggest they are rechargeable, which is pretty fatty.

I like to save the best for last—not only are these headphones Bluetooth, they are Bluetooth 2.0! Whammy! Bluetooth 2.0 is three to ten times faster than Bluetooth 1.x and has a lower power consumption among other things.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

ilounge-sept-4.jpg

This week at iLounge: We’ve now posted our full comprehensive reviews of Apple’s brand-new enhanced 5G iPod and second-generation iPod nano, both of which offer even better value and performance than the models introduced last year. Also added are reviews of several new iPod and nano accessories - Apple’s new small Power Adapter, iPod nano Lanyard Headphones, and iPod nano Dock.

But if you’re one of the people who was disappointed that Apple didn’t release a bigger-screened video iPod, good news: now you have three options. This week, we completed our full reviews of Memorex’s 8.4″-screened iFlip and Sonic Impact’s Video-55 (previously known as iKaleidoscope and K-1) - the results will surprise you. Both deliver significantly better movie viewing experiences than iLuv’s earlier i1055, recently re-released as the Zeon Z1055.

In the news this week, Apple quietly updated the special edition U2 iPod to bring it in line with the current enhanced 5G iPod, and also slashed prices on a number of refurbished iPod models. Plus, Apple sold more than 125,000 movie downloads in the first week they were available from the iTunes Store; iTunes users and iPod owners are complaining about numerous bugs in iTunes 7; and more than 1 million miles have been logged by runners using the Nike+iPod Sport Kit.

Thanko iPod FM Transmitter and Wireless Remote Control

thankoipod.jpgJapan’s Thanko—bless their hearts—has released their very own FM transmitter for all shapes and sizes of the iPod. Unfortunately, this FM transmitter isn’t as charming as perhaps other Thanko products. Like every other FM transmitter, it frees your iPod from having to be plugged into a stereo just to be able to hear it from a set of speakers. They work well in cars provided you don’t live in an area where every single FM frequency is already a high-powered, commercial station.

Additionally, Thanko has released the supporting IPFMR001, a wireless remote control that’s used to control the iPod’s (or any digital audio player’s) volume and so forth.

Thanko’s selling the two as a package for around $50 in Japan only for now. And probably forever.

CEDIA 2006: Pioneer Pictorial Booth Tour

main-pioneer.jpgI got a chance to get a little walk-around of the Pioneer booth. Same shit, different booth. LCDs, plasma, audio, blah blah blah. There was one lone item that stood out from the usual quantity of home theatre stuff. Hit the jump to see it along with some more photos.

Here it is, the lone item from pioneer that stood out. This is a proprietary media center that is integrated into their Elite series TVs. It works really simply and I was mighty impressed. Connect the TV to your existing network, preferably over a wired connection and share files on your computer. Then you can go to the TV and play back pictures, video (limited codecs though) and audio. No need to have a fancy media center attached to your television and network. Simply plug and share. Pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

docks-overview.jpgA day and a half later I found ‘em! This is the motherload of iPod docks courtesy of JBL. They had quite a few docks on display—iPod and PSP. iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

ilounge-sept-3.jpgThis week at iLounge: You might already have heard (ahem) about that Showtime event earlier this week - you know, the one where Apple introduced three new iPods, a media router, and iTunes 7 - but now that the dust has settled, we’ve brought you the world’s best coverage of all the new products and announcements there.

Our comprehensive review of the Second-Generation iPod nano is already live, with photos of all five new colors and three capacities (2GB/4GB/8GB), battery life and audio quality tests, and much more. The new nano is stacked up against two iPods it has replaced - the iPod mini and first nano - and impressively comes out ahead. A separate article looks at the nano’s new audio recording capabilities, as well.

Not interested in the nano? Our extensive early hands-on descriptions and photographs of the Enhanced iPod (with video) have been bulked up by unboxing photographs and comparisons against the prior 5G model, while exclusive comparison shots of the Second-Generation iPod shuffle show how the “smallest MP3 player” on the planet looks alongside Apple’s earlier iPod Radio Remote and original iPod shuffle. A First Look at Apple’s upcoming iTV shows off how the company intends to invade your living room - unfortunately, at a crazy $299 price.

In accessory news, we also took a First Look at iHome’s iH7R - beefed-up sequel to the 3-million-selling iH5 Clock Radio - and reviewed a true Bose SoundDock replacement, Athena’s iVoice Wall Mountable Speaker. We also got our hands on the very first new iPod nano accessory - the updated iPod nano Lanyard Headphones - and looked at Apple’s smaller-than-ever USB charger.

Apple iPod Nano Users Complaining About New iPod Nanos Already

nanoblemish.pngIt hasn’t even been a week and people who bought the new iPod Nanos are complaining about blemishes on the finish. Blemishes? C’mon. First it was scratches on the first-gen Nanos, now blemishes on the second-gen? Some people are even saying dust is getting into the finish, which makes it an uneven color. Are Apple users just too picky, or is this a real issue?

80GB Enhanced 5G iPod Unboxeed, Compared With Regular 5G

ipode5g.jpgThe gang over at iLounge already got their hands on an 80GB enhanced 5G iPod and have the pics and comparison shots to prove it. (Apparently, full-size iPods that Apple announced on Tuesday are referred to as “enhanced,” though the new, brighter screen has supposedly been shipping with regular 5G iPods for a little while now.) While unboxing is all fun and good, how does this enhanced iPod perform?

As for the screen’s brightness, well, technically, it is brighter, just don’t expect to have it leave your jaw on the floor, especially while viewing indoors. The new earbuds that Apple is including with these iPods now has silicone rubber edges, so they’re no longer as torturous to wear. What’s more, there more bass heavy, pleasing today’s popular music fans, what with their hip hop and heavy metal.

It’s worth noting that the side-by-side comparison shots do show how much better the enhanced 5G iPod handles colors when compared to the older 5G. Full reviews are forthcoming, so strap in.

Conspiracy Unveiled: TiVo, Apple, Microsoft, CEDIA, CTIA, Nintendo, Photokina Out to Kill Bloggers

I finally pieced it together.

You set embargoes to lift in the middle of the night. Your information “leaks” right before I’m supposed to take the girlfriend out to dinner. You gang up, and throw down CEDIA, CTIA, and Photokina in different time zones. You launch blockbuster gadgets like TiVo Series 3, Zune, and Nintendo Wii all within three days of each other. Oh yeah, and the new iTunes movie store, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, and iTV.

I get it. You’re trying to summon a tidal wave of news to smother bloggers.

Well guess what? I didn’t like sleep anyhow. Bring it.

iHome iH7R iPod Dock and Speaker System

ih7r.jpgiHome has released the iH7R, the latest revision to its popular iH5 iPod dock and speaker system. Like the iH5, the IH7R is compatible with nearly all models of the iPod, but it adds a few features that may make it worth your while. For starters, they’ve included one more speaker, kind of like how razor blade companies keep adding that extra blade for even closer shaves. The additional speaker, dubbed a “beside” speaker, hooks up the to iH7R proper and is supposed to help provide more room-filling sound.

What also sets the iH7R apart is the (overdue) inclusion of a remote control; the radio now includes a dual alarm and presets for both AM and FM radio stations. The LCD now has a dimmer setting as well, calming the nerves of many users.

Look for the iH7R for $150.

Best iPod Accessory Ever: Combination Breathalyzer, FM Transmitter

ibreath.jpgI’ve been writing about iPod accessories since the beginning of time, and this is no doubt the best one I’ve ever seen. Call me an alcoholic, but having a breathalyzer is pretty damn important. A breathalyzer is the perfect device to determine how ugly of a girl you can take home that night and still be considered okay—oh and it can determine the legal limit for driving, too.

This gadget attaches to the dock adapter on all newer iPods. Simply blow on the straw for five seconds to determine you blood alcohol content. Also included in this device is an FM transmitter! Therefore giving it a reason to be attached to an iPod. The iBreath is available for $80 from David Steele, whoever that is.

Apple Showtime’s After Party: iPod Nano Porn, Plus Video

After the main event, we were ushered to a back room where the new stuff was on display. We got to play with the pretty little second gen iPod Nano, and even got her to pose for some glamour shots.

Before you jump for the goods, we’ll say this. Jason Chen and I prefer the older style’s rounded edges, that make it look like a shrunken full-sized iPod. This one is somewhat of an iPod Nano and iPod Mini hybrid, with the sharp edges on the top and bottom of the aluminum case. The colors are stupendous. But we still miss the bling’d out Gold Mini. (Bring it back, Apple!)

Now, jump to see the images, and the video.

The iPod Nano: The 2nd Generation

It’s made out of aluminum, even thinner than the first gen. They’re bringing back colors (like the mIni). It looks similar to the Mini, actually.

Battery life increased from 15 to 24 hours, gapless playback, instant search like the big iPod, and quick scrolling. Comes with the new headphones.

Comes in three models, 2GB model in silver, 4GB in silver, pink, green, blue, and 8GB in black.

$149 for 2GB, $199 for 4GB, $249 for 8GB model. Double the storage for the same price.

New packaging is 52% less volume than the old iPod nano. It’s more “environmentally friendly”.

All three are available today.

The new nano works with the charger, the armband, lanyard, and works with the Nike Shoe (I don’t know if it works without the adapter or if that’s still in there. I think it’s still necessary.)

The iPod Shuffle: Second Gen Tiny Player

It’s no longer a stick. Imagine the iPod Nano with only the control pad and a little bit of extra space. Just a rectangle, like a 3×4 instead of a 1×6 stick.

Comes in an aluminum case, and a built-in clip so you can wear it on yoursef. It’s really tiny, the size of a matchbox, give or take. Still has the switches for shuffle and linear, but no screen still.

Comes with a dock, USB 2.0 compatiiblity, and comes in one model with 1GB storage.

“The world’s smallest MP3 player”, they claim.

$79, available October, taking orders today.

True Video iPod on the Menu for Apple Event?

sept12pic.jpgZomg! Tuaw has what appears to be a camerphone shot of a banner featuring some kind of fullscreen video iPod. The shot was supposedly taken by am employee at the Yerba Buena Cener for the Arts in San Francisco—the same theatre that will be hosting the “Showtime” event from Apple tomorrow.

We’ve been speculating about the touchscreen video iPod for months—is it finally here? Honestly I was only expecting nano upgrades, and the true video iPod wasn’t going to come until MacWorld in January, but I’ll take this. Unfortunately, it could be a fake.

changing the way you experience your music and more.
Again. In lighter, thinner 30GB and 60GB models starting

iPod pure front and pure side

Better Yet

Time for the world’s best music player to take the stage
for another encore.
In 30GB and 60GB(1) models that hold up to 15,000(2) songs,
full-color album art and up to 25,000 photos(3), the new iPod

More and Less

The new iPod boasts up to 20 hours of battery life(5),
five hours more than before. Plus, you get a bigger
display and one more iPod color — sleek black.
But here’s the kicker: At under half an inch thin,
the new 30GB iPod takes up about 45 percent less room
than the original iPod.Even the new 60GB model is over 10
percent thinner than
the fourth-generation 30GB iPod.
More features in less space? Sounds like iPod.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

ilounge-sept-2.jpgThis week at iLounge: after last week’s look at how super-premium earphones are custom-fit to meld with your ear canals, we’ve disassembled a pair of Apple’s packed-in iPod earbuds to show you photographically what’s actually sitting inside the ears of most iPod owners. We also stopped by our local Burger King to bring you details on Frypod, the fast food company’s new invention that’s sure to inspire either a nastygram from Apple Legal or a full-fledged lawsuit, and a story on why your favorite FM transmitter may be violating the law.

Hit the jump to see the rest of the goods from iLounge.

We also took looks at several interesting new iPod accessories, including iHome’s $200 iH52 multi-component home system, which delivers basically all the best features of other iPod audio systems (radio, iPod dock, RF remote control, big speakers) in a single purchase, and Mirage’s $300 OmniVibe, which allows you to hear music in a 360-degree field surrounding the all-in-one black enclosure. Gemini also delivered iTRAX, its iPod DJ mixing console that looks a lot like last year’s not-so-cool iDJ, but adds a replaceable crossfader and additional audio spectrum adjustments.

Apple this week confirmed that it will hold a special event on Tuesday, September 12th at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, California. Reports say that Apple will use the event next week to add full-length movie downloads to the iTunes Music Store, but that the company has so far only signed up Disney and no other major Hollywood studio. Plus, Apple files a patent application for a “multi-functional handheld device,” iPod manufacturer Foxconn drops its defamation lawsuit it filed against two Chinese journalists, and SanDisk launches a clone of Apple’s “Made for iPod” program — “Made for Sansa.”

Exclusive Gizmodo Review Of The iCarta iPod Dock/Toilet Paper Holder

icartafinal.jpgThe iCarta iPod Dock and Toilet paper dispenser has to be the most notorious of iPod accessories over the years. There’s not a week that goes by that a reader doesn’t send in a tip to this little gem. We’ve finally gotten our hands on one, assembled it, and put it through some “strenuous” testing for its first-ever review.

So how does this little iPod Speaker/Dock/TP Giver stack up? After exercising every function (wink wink) this baby can do, we can say it performs pretty damn well.

icartacomponents.jpg

The iCarta TP dock comes pretty much already assembled. All you have to do is put two screws into your wall or cabinet, mount the unit, and assemble the toilet paper roll. It’s a a ten-minute job at most, even for the most mechanically deficient. Once you’re in, you’re going to have to find an outlet in your bathroom to plug this into. This step may be more difficult for some, so scope out your bathroom layout before you buy one.

The instruction manual claims that the dock works with just about every iPod, including the iPod shuffle. What I found was that my 5G iPod Video worked just fine with it, but my 3G iPod kept locking up. Maybe it just couldn’t take the smell.

icartablack.jpg

Once you do get your iPod working, the unit has a power button, two volume buttons, and a selection button to choose between your iPod, iPod Shuffle, or line in. There’s a blue LED that glows to indicate which input you’re currently using. It’s basic, but gets the job done. The speakers are all right, but nothing mind-blowing. It’s about the sound quality of, say, a cheap Logitech iPod dock.

On to the toilet paper functionality. It’s less stable than a traditional toilet paper holder, so if you’re one of those who slams down on the roll, don’t. You’re going to rip the entire dock out of the wall, sending both it and your iPod flying into god-knows-where. Nobody wants to dig an iPod out of the toilet after they’ve “finished”. But if you’re just grabbing a couple of sheets out normally, the roller performs fine.

Its $99 price tag may be a bit much for just something you use a couple of times a day. But if you’re like me and always wanted to listen to music in the shower, while brushing your teeth, or dropping the kids off at the pool, then it’s a useful gadget. When you’re not actively listening to music, it also keeps your iPod charged.

Oh, and by the way, I wrote the bulk of this review sitting on the toilet listening to the iCarta. Any readers have any recommended songs for toilet time? Comment, or send us an email to tips.

Maplin A93GC MP4 Player Attempts to Challenge iPod nano, Probably Fails

maplinmp4.jpgMaplin is positioning the A93GC MP4 player as a potential iPod nano killer, which is like saying Hillary wants to be president—we know that already. What we don’t know, however, is how Maplin intends to accomplish this small feat. So far, the only, you know, facts we know are that it’ll cost some $112 when it’s released in the beginning of November. Afterwards, its price will skyrocket to around $190 before the end of the year. Good idea all around.

We can, however, do a little prognosticating based on Maplin’s history: right now, the rumor around the water cooler is that it’ll come with a pedestrian 2GB of flash memory and a 1.5-inch display. Take that, nano!

We’ll let you know when Apple throws in the towel and bows to the awesome might that is the Maplin A93GC if and when it’s released on this side of the Sea of Atlas.

Apple’s Showtime On Sept 12th Confirmed

mainimage2.jpg

The invites came through the door this morning, so Apple’s September 12th unveiling is officially on. Check back here, 10:00 AM, California time, for live updates. Wipe that drool off your mouth. We’re still a week away. Having had our chain yanked year after year, we don’t freak out and run everytime the hamster-wheel-like rumor mill starts churning. But how can we not be hungry, after eating just the table scraps Steve J. brushed to the floor at the WWDC keynote. Given our malnourished state, our Apple-sense is tingling a bit more than usual. It’s hard—no, its impossible—to nail down which way the gadgetry is coming from. But the voices in our heads are murmuring about “Merom” Core 2 Duo chips inside of Macbooks, giant 23-inch iMacs, colored iPod Nanos with beefier storage, and the a hard launch for the iTunes movie store. We’ve even heard good old iPhone, widescreen video iPod, and video-compatible Airport Express rumors.

Given the image included with the invite, we’re betting our pennies on video news. But enough about us, us, us. Let’s say a genie in a black turtleneck sweater granted you one Apple wish. What would you have him grant you?

iTunes Movie Store Movie List Revealed: The House That Mickey Built

applemovies.jpgLast week brought news that Apple is planning to launch its highly anticipated (by some, anyway) iTunes Movie Store very soon, perhaps even at the invite-only secret meeting on September 12, and now we have a list of movies likely to make their way to Jobs’ online store. There are Disney movies as far as the eye can see, which isn’t surprising given Jobs’ presence on the board of directors over at the Magic Kingdom. For a full list (so far, anyway), hit the jump.

So, what movies will you be able to download for $9.99 or $14.99 if it’s considered “new”?

From Walt Disney Pictures: James and the Giant Peach, Pocahontas, The Lion King, Aladdin, Chicken Little, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Sky High, Ice Princess, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

From Disney/Pixar: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3 (?), A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars.

From Miramax: Cold Mountain, The Hours, Chicago, Cinderella Man, Scary Movie 1,2,3 and 4.

From Touchstone Pictures: The Royal Tenenbaums, Pearl Harbor, The Sixth Sense (with Hollywood Pictures), Unbreakable, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Shanghai Noon, Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, King Arthur, Hidalgo, Open Range, Signs, Reign of Fire.

Apart from Disney and Pixar, Lion’s Gate Entertainment will make the following, mostly horror, movies available: American Psycho, Dogma, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Open Water, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, The Punisher, Fahrenheit 9/11, Crash, Alone in the Dark, Hostel, Saw 1 and 2

Toy Story 3 is the only really interesting film on the list, given that we didn’t even know it was coming out. Other than that, enjoy your generous helping of good old fashioned Disney movie magic and second-rate horror films. Does anybody really want to see Deuce Bigalow on an iPod in the near future? Looks fairly banal and formulaic to me ($1 to Michael Caine).

doPi Karaoke Adapter For the Video iPod

dopi.jpgThe doPi iPod adapter let’s you belt out Gloria Gaynor’s most famous track anywhere you have an iPod. The doPi system lets you download songs from their servers in MP4 format to load onto your iPod, which then plays back the files with the lyrics appearing on the screen during the song. You know, Karaoke style. It’s compatible with iTunes PC and Mac, so you’re still syncing the files through your normal iTunes interface.

The doPi comes with the appropriate cables to hook up toy our ipod and Microphone. Despite this adapter being iPod dependent, it’s actually not completely portable. You need to use the included AC adapter to plug in the doPi, so you’re limited to places where there’s an AC adapter. Dopey? Yes. Fun? Only if you really like Karaoke. And at $60, we’d recommend just getting a copy of Karaoke Revolution Party for your PlayStation 2.

Special Apple Media Event Planned For September 12: New iPods?

applelogo.jpgReports have surface on the Web today saying that Apple is inviting certain members of the media (read: not us, probably) to a “special event for new products.” What products will be shown are completely unknown, naturally, but anyone with a pulse might hazard a guess that the event could be used to launch the new, proper video iPod, while some more adventurous people might mention “iPhone” in the same breath. Hopefully, they’ll have their movie store worked out by then, or soon after.

The event, which is being held somewhere in northern California and perhaps at a Legion of Doom-like headquarters, is open only to invited members of the press. Additionally, the event is scheduled to take place at the same time as the Apple Expo in Paris. As it stands, Euro journalists will get to attend a videoconference in London of Apple’s secretive northern California event. In any case, don’t change that dial, since information regarding the event is likely to change quite a bit before it takes place.

JBL Gets Jiggy With Speaker Design, Headphones

jbl_speakers.jpgHarmon Kardon/JBL is getting out on the edge with some in-your-face design, introducing two powered speaker systems, an iPod boombox, and its first line of headphones. The most striking of the designs were the JBL spyro speakers (upper left), substituting boxy old satellites with floweresque forms along with a mushroom-shaped subwoofer. If that’s a little too girly for you, the JBL Spot (lower left) matches that mushroom sub with a couple of mushroomette satellites. Those two will be available in a variety of colors as well as optional design wrappers that let you skin them in a variety of ways.

The boombox has the Harman Kardon nameplate upfront, and the iPod docks up top along with the wireless remote that stows away in the back and S-Video output, too. That should be selling for €349 (around $448). Then JBL brings its first family of headphones to market, offered in a family of four variations. The JBL Reference 220 is in in-ear model, and the Reference 420 will be €150 (around $192) and has a volume control and leather earpads. The 500 series is designed for noise cancellation, and the reference 620 has an iPod dock connector Bluetooth module for rockin’ around the house wirelessly. Release date for these sexy products wasn’t announced.
