Stupid iPod Cooling Hack

wetnano.jpgTrolling MacOSXHints, I found this idiotic hack to cool off an iPod during a mega-sync session.

I have a 20 GB iPod that’s on its last legs. Whenever it syncs a lot of songs [it gets] super-hot. So I borrowed an idea from overclockers…took a cold pack that was in the fridge, wrapped it in a towel to absorb condensation..worked like a charm.

Bad bad bad bad bad idea. The towel will mop up the condensation on the ice pack. But if the iPod gets cool enough, condensation is going to form inside of the case itself. Not good.

iPod Shuffle v2.0 Finally Shipping

IMG_3707-thumb.JPGRemember that super-small iPod Shuffle v2.0 from the Showtime event well over a month ago? The good news is that this player is finally shipping. Way too long after it was announced, in my opinion. Nevertheless, it is still a nifty little MP3 player, and it is made by Apple, so we can’t hate on it for too long. Go pick it up from an Apple Store or order it online—just in time for the holidays.

Spin Master iPod Cases Let You Mix Badly

We can see how these Remix and Beatz iPod cases can get pretty annoying after a while. But the first couple hours you play with this thing will be pure delight.

The two cases—one which lets you drop “funky beatz” and the other lets you “remix”—can be chained together so you and your buddy can work together. It’s kinda cool, and will be available at Best Buy soon for $30. We just wish they hadn’t destroyed one of our favorite Jamiroquai songs.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

ilounge-oct-4.jpg

This week at iLounge: In an attempt to find interesting new accessories other than speakers to highlight, we focused our review efforts this week on several other innovative products - three athletic remote controls from Belkin (SportCommand), Scosche (Wireless RF Sport Remote), and Monster Cable (iEZClick), designed to let you keep your iPod safe while snowboarding, bike riding, or whatever else you might want to do outdoors in tough weather conditions.

More iGoodness after the jump.

We also reviewed Griffin’s iTalkPro, the third voice recorder to work with fifth-generation iPods and second-generation iPod nanos, and took a First Look at Streaming Networks’ iRecord, a two-button recording device that creates iPod-ready videos and dumps them on to your 5G iPod.

But more speaker reviews were also inevitable - they just keep on coming. First were two Made for iPod speakers from JVC: the RA-P10 portable audio system with a clock radio and integrated thermometer, and the NX-PS1 Component speaker system, which matches both Macs and iPods. We also reviewed Logitech’s tiny tube-like mm32, and took a First Look at XtremeMac’s Tango, which offers a design similar to Apple’s iPod Hi-Fi at a much lower price, and actually sounds (mostly) quite good.

Sonnettech Volta: Watch iPod Movies for 16 Hours Straight

volta_left.jpgIf that 3.5-hour playback time of the 30GB iPod or 6.5 hour playback of the 80GB model isn’t going to be enough for you, here’s the Sonnettech Volta Rechargeable Battery Pack, claiming “up to” (we’re always wary of those two weasel words) 16 hours of video playback on a single 5.5 hour charge.

In addition to its extended video playback capabilities, a fully-charged Volta can actually charge your iPod three times if you can’t get to a hot USB port or AC adapter. Even though it’s yet another device to put into your bag of tricks, this one looks like it could keep you watching video until your eyes get crossed.

Beyond that, it can keep that iPod going for 80 hours of music listening. This is great for those of us who whine about the iPod not having enough battery longevity. If that’s a priority, it might be worth shelling out $69.95.

Advanced Technetix Visual iPod Remote

VisualRemoteDS%5B2%5D.jpgAdvanced Technetix, whom nobody has ever heard of, is releasing a “visual” iPod remote. Visual meaning the remote part has a one-line LCD. What makes this device a bit different from others is that full menu functionality and control can be done from the LCD screen on the remote—not just track changing. No batteries are required and it comes with attached headphones. This could be a pretty nice third-party accessory, depending on the price, which is still unknown.

Edifier MO Retro iPod Alarm Clock

Edifier_mo.jpgAs the resident retro-junkie I fully endorse this alarm clock speaker dock made by Edifier MO. The dock is shaped like one of those classic circular bell-style alarm clocks with the iPod sitting in the center finishing the design. Unfortunately, the functionality of this alarm clock stops there. Because the iPod has no way to display the time with a large font, it has no way to function as just a regular clock. Not much else is known about this dock—I wonder if it comes in white, I would assume so.

TuffWrap Case For iPod Nano Tuffly Protects Against Bumps, Bruises

hotjawn.jpgLots of you apparently hate the iPod, but others still buy the damn thing like it’s going to lead them to El Dorado or something. So if you and the 2G iPod nano are gonna do the tango for a while, it’s best to use protection, like XtremeMac’s TuffWrap cases. Besides automatically making you more of a man (or less, depending on how you view using protection), the TuffWarp protects the nano from all the day-to-day harassments that all too often do them in. It’s made of “rugged silicone” and not that pansy “regular” silicone found in bootleg cases. Better still, the case comes with a dock connector so you can have the case on and have it plugged into a dock at the same time. Clearly, we live in the most advanced civilization on Earth: our iPods can be docked and be inside a case simultaneously.

The TuffWrap should be available on or around the beginning of November. It’s the hot jawn of iPod cases.

Pantech PG3600V has Circular Wheel Buttons, Declared iPod Copier, Sued for Kajillions

PantechPG3600V.jpgOkay, they weren’t really sued for kajillions, but Pantech has released the PG3600V. This cellphone has a circular wheel design that has buttons—yes, similar to the iPod. The circular button wheel is a good aesthetical design, and maybe the companies use it because it works, not because they are trying to be exactly like Apple.

Besides, the Pantech PG3600V is a cellphone. The iPod isn’t. This celly has an MP3 player, Bluetooth, 1.3-megapixel cameras, etc. So what if it has a circular button pattern? I like it, and that is all that matters. Fuck the iPod, yo..

Happy Birthday, iPod: Top Ten Reasons Why I Hate You

ipods_sad.jpgHey, today’s the iPod’s fifth birthday, born October 23, 2001. We’d sing Happy Birthday, but copyright law prevents us from doing so unless we pay the owner of that song. So instead of crooning that hackneyed ditty, we’re going to spread the haterage about the iPod.

The iPod gets so much adoring and worshipful press—we ink-stained (pixel-stained?) wretches are fawning over it 24/7—so we figured it was high time somebody took it down a notch or two. As my Gizmodo colleagues hide in the closet, they’ve shoved me out into the limelight to take the heat, offering my Top 10 Reasons Why I Hate You, iPod. So get your flamethrowers ready. Here goes:

There’s no FM: we have some great FM stations around these parts, one jazz station in particular that I listen to all the time in the car. I can’t do that with the iPod. How much more would it cost to put FM in that thing, maybe two bucks? Get over it, put the damn receiver and there and be done with it.

More haterage, after the jump.

Scratches: Yes, the new aluminum iPod nano is allegedly scratch-resistant, but it’s retro, looking kinda like the old mini. We don’t like going backwards. Our first-gen iPod nano looked like a skating rink on day two, and we were coddling it in microfiber most of the time. What, does it have a wax coating? What good is a beautiful design that gets all scratched up if you touch it? Meh.

Battery life: We still haven’t forgotten about the first-generation iPod whose battery wore out quicker than a premature ejaculating teen. Plus, it was nigh on impossible to replace there for a while. Now, the batteries still won’t last long enough, even in the newest models. There are cheap Taiwan knockoffs that last twice as long. Fix that.

DRM: Digital rights management is shit, no matter how you slice it. Sure, Apple’s DRM, called FairPlay, gives you a little more leeway, but we’d rather not have anyone telling us what we can do with music we’ve purchased. Makes us want to steal it.

iTunes is janky: iTunes is weird, and although we have no trouble using it, we’re getting tired of teaching our grandparents all of its intricacies. We thought this was Apple, where everyone could use it and it would be easy. iTunes is not easy enough, and doesn’t follow Windows conventions closely enough.

No Bluetooth: How hard can it be to put Bluetooth in the iPod? Then we could get rid of all those wires with their auto-tangle feature, seemingly wrapping around themselves while you’re not looking, requiring an untangling session a few times a day. Bring on the Bluetooth.

Thief magnet: This is not really the iPod’s fault, but the damn things are so popular, if you’re wearing white earphones, you might as well have just painted a big target on your back. At least release some official black Apple iPod earbuds, or various colors…? Maybe that’ll throw the muggers off for a little while.

My kid wants a new one every six months: Steve Jobs himself talked about how iPods must often be replaced. Sure, any consumer electronics device that’s cutting edge will be obsolete quickly, but at least you can make them less appealing to my kid, whose nagging me for a new one on a regular basis.

No widescreen: You’re making the mistake of the Microsoft Zune, sticking with that old-fashioned 4×3 aspect ratio. We want wide screen; that’s the way of the future. While you’re at it, give us better than 640×480 video on iTunes.

No WiFi: speaking of Zune, you could’ve put WiFi on the iPod a long time ago, and not crippled it seven ways to Sunday, too, as Microsoft is about to do. Another missed opportunity.

Oh well, happy birthday anyway, iPod.

Microwaving an iPod nano—Why God, Why?

I’m not sure what is more sad. The fact that these kids willingly destroy gadgets for their own enjoyment, or witnessing an iPod nano melting in a microwave. Fucking kids need to learn some respect for property, but it is neat to see the iPod melt, nonetheless.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

ilounge-oct-3.jpgThis week at iLounge: From the cool to the obscure, this last week has brought an interesting array of new iPod accessories to our offices for testing. Griffin’s iKaraoke wireless karaoke system is one of the more eye-catching - a silver microphone that connects to your iPod and broadcasts singalong tracks via an FM transmitter to any radio. Then there are a couple of interesting cases - the slightly-spooky NanoMonsters for iPod nano are hard rubber stands with cartoony monsters painted on one side, while Orbino’s Cambio premium leather cases include palladium rings and impressive belt clips.

Also…

: the cavalcade of iPod docking speakers shows no sign of letting up, so we’ve been doing our best to keep up with everything that’s coming in. In addition to First Looks at JVC’s new RA-P10 portable clock radio and i.Dream America’s crazy faux vacuum tube component speaker system, we reviewed three all-in-one systems: Monitor Audio’s i-deck compact, Saffire’s weirdly named iPod Hi-Fi-alike iWoogie Blaster, and Kensington’s surprisingly good SX 3000R speaker with on-iPod FM tuning and a remote control.

We also took a look at the supposed smugness of Apple and its fans - your comments are welcome - and did an A-B-C comparison of all three recording accessories for 5G iPods and new iPod nanos, from Belkin, Griffin, and XtremeMac.

Apple Applies for Patent for Possible Wireless Music Features for the iPod

satellite-ipod-patent1.gifAnother ever-so-confusing patent application from Apple has hit the wire. I’m trying to break down this confusing document and it seems that it is a process by which the iPod can wirelessly sample and save (purchase) media. The iPod tunes into a wireless signal like AM/FM, digital radio or Wi-Fi.

So what does this mean? Well first-off, iPods could soon be tuning into satellite radio networks. Secondly, the iPod may be trying to combat the Zune and its crazy ass wireless purchasing/swapping system. Does this mean Apple is concerned about the Zune? Meh, probably not, but it is always good to see some intense competition. Jump to see a bigger picture for the patent docs.

Teac SR-L200i iPod Dock Looks So Nice, You’ll Almost Forget It’s an iPod Dock

teacdock.jpgIgnoring the fact that, in essence, this is just another iPod dock+radio, Teac’s SR-L200i pulls one thing off very well: it looks very, muy, muito good. She shimmers like a beautiful grand piano, don’t she? Chalk that up to its sheeny, shiny finish. Beyond just sitting back in the corner and admiring its beauty (sounds a little like high school, doesn’t it, Mr. Wallflower?), you could, you know, if you wanted to, plop in an iPod and feel the music through its 2-channel, 4-watt speakers. It also features a dynamic bass boost sound system, but then again, so does my toothbrush.

The SR-L200i is available in Japan for around $210. Perfect for the four people who haven’t already bought, and subsequently thrown out, an iPod dock. At least it looks pretty. Prettiness makes up for a lot of shortcomings, as we all know.

iRecord: Video to IPod or PSP, No Computer In Between

irecord_diagram.jpgEliminate the middleman with iRecord from Streaming Networks, letting you record video directly onto an iPod or PSP with no computer in between. Just hook it up to any analog video source, press one button on the iRecord and thar she blows. It does all the compressing for you using H.264/AVC for video (at 3 hours of video per gig) with AAC for audio, and MP3 for music.

This is not the first attempt at such a device; there’s the iSee recorder we showed you last January that just came on the market last month to mixed reviews, intended more as a video player enhancement for iPods that aren’t equipped for such things.

The iRecord is cool stuff. Compressing into H.264 for $200? Sounds like a bargain. Now if you can just somehow get used to watching video on such a tiny screen, the iRecord might just be worth it.

Meizu Miniplayer Reviewed (Verdict: Your iPod Nano is a Turd)

meizureview.jpgThe Meizu Miniplayer is like the Obi-Won Kenobi of MP3 players—the only hope to go up against the Empire-like iPod. Now that the Nano has gone a Darth Vader-ish black, the white of the Meizu Miniplayer reminds us that good functionality and great design will win over great design alone.

So how does this Miniplayer shine? Let us count the ways. First, it’s tiny (just like the Nano). Second, it plays back WMV/MP3/OGG/WAV/XviD files. Third, it’s priced the same as the Nano, but has a screen the size of a 5G iPod. Lastly, the scroll panel works as well as the Nano’s scroll wheel.

So what’s the downside?

Well, there’s no support for either the Apple iTunes store or PlaysForSure stores like Napster. Thus, you’re pretty much need to either rip the songs into MP3 format or rip your songs from your CD collection—or download them illegally. If you’re looking for a gift for someone who’s anti-iPod, the Meizu Miniplayer will give you zero regrets.

Zune vs iPod: The 5 Year Battle for Souls

IPODZUNE.jpgSteven Levy didn’t just find out how to meet women using iPods. He writes an article comparing the Zune vs. iPod battle as one that’ll be sorted only after 5 years, much like J Allard’s Xbox and its stand against Sony’s Playstation 2. Clearly, that battle has been going well for J, against all odds. So who knows what we’ll be listening to by 2011.

The fight is in some way about video vs music in portable players. J Allard’s Zune has a bigger screen, and he’s told us personally that the Zune is heavily video focused. Meanwhile, Steve makes it very clear that…

the games, video, podcasts, and audiobooks are only tangential:

it’s hard to imagine that music is not the epicenter of the iPod, for a long, long, long, long, long time. I was very lucky to grow up in a time when music really mattered. It wasn’t just something in the background; It really changed the world. I think that music faded in importance for a while. Music is so deep within all of us, but it’s easy to go for a day or a week or a month or a year without really listening to music. And the iPod has changed that for tens of millions of people, and that makes me really happy, because I think music is good for the soul.

Kinda makes me gush in a very un-gawker like way. This is why the fanboys worship His Jobbiness. Are you going to pick up a Zune when they hit in about a month?

Trying Apple’s Tune [Newsweek]

Steve Jobs On Zune WiFi Getting You Laid

InEar.pngSteven Levy, the Newsweek tech reporter has the kind of inside access at Apple worth Walt Mossberg’s weight in gold. Check out this locker room talk about the size of Zune’s “social neworking” je-ne-sais-quoi from his Q&A with Steve Jobs.

Levy: Microsoft has announced its new iPod competitor, Zune. It says that this device is all about building communities. Are you worried?

Jobs: In a word, no. I’ve seen the demonstrations on the Internet about how you can find another person using a Zune and give them a song they can play three times. It takes forever. By the time you’ve gone through all that, the girl’s got up and left! You’re much better off to take one of your earbuds out and put it in her ear.

That kind of crass, unprotected earbud action, first documented by Wired’s Leander Kahney, is fast and raw. But the Zune’s wireless, sterile, faceless interaction seems like an easier way to play grab ass with a stranger’s playlists without the awkward social interaction we use gadgets to get away from in the first place. (And with less chance for picking up ear-borne infections.) Girls are scary, so I just twiddle my thumbs and listen to music instead of talking to them.

mi Lites: iPod Case with Lighting

milites_lace.gif

If those white earbuds aren’t doing their job to get your iPod stolen, you might consider the mi Lite. It’s half protective case, half party in my pocket, and fully obnoxious to fellow commuters on the subway.

mi Lites are activated by a touch sensor on the case and provide their own “replaceable” power supply (we are guessing watch battery). The site claims future availability for all iPods but the mini and shuffle. We’ll need to see mi Lites in person before any final judgments, but most of the designs on their page are ugly as sin - like sticking your iPod in a glowing pile of poo. But the model pictured here isn’t bad for $19.98.

iFrogz Tadpole Case for Little Kids

tadpole.jpgAt ShowStoppers (some lame tech media event) last night, probably the only company that was showing anything Gizmodo-cool was iFrogz—its Tadpole iPod case for children was showed off for the first time and it sure does look interesting. Since it’s for little kids (the target audience seems to be children 5-years-old and under), the handles should work great. You do have to wonder, though, what kind of society wants its children glued to an iPod’s screen for long periods of time. It’s got the same rubber feel to it like other iFrogz cases and should be out this November for around $25.

iFrogz, one of the only companies whose names ends in a “z” where it should be an “s” and whose products don’t stink.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

ilounge-oct-2.jpgThis week at iLounge: Even if rumors had suggested the collaboration between anti-AIDS organization (RED) and Apple was in the office, the timing of Apple’s release of the red-colored (PRODUCT) RED iPod nano came as a surprise: just in time for the holidays. Expect red cases and similar charitable pledges from other iPod-related companies to follow. Apple Vice President of Hardware Product Marketing Greg Joswiak told us to watch for a $25 iTunes (PRODUCT) RED gift card next month too.

Also: We’ve added massive numbers of new First Looks to the site this week, including the least expensive wearable video display yet released - Icuiti’s iWear for iPod ($299), which requires no battery pack and has dual-screened 3-D capabilities as well - plus Monster’s new auto-tuning FM transmitter iCarPlay Wireless 200, which finds the clearest local station for you. We’ve also featured new iPod nano (second-generation) armbands and cases from a number of vendors, including Noreve, Marware, Speck, and GizMac.

Finally, we’ve announced an iPod Colors photo contest: submit your colorful shot to win an 80GB iPod or cool new nano!

Bono and Oprah to Launch Red iPod Nano Tomorrow

redipod.jpgThe two giant stars plan to unveil a 4GB red iPod Nano in order to benefit the Product RED charity. From each sale of the $199 iPod, $10 will be donated towards The Global Fund to help out HIV/AIDS sufferers in Africa. Rumors of a red iPod have been around since January of this year, but we’re certain that Oprah used her cosmic powers to get this deal done.

We also heard the red iPod nano is making an appearance at the 5th Ave. Apple Store. If any readers wander down there, email us some photos of the iPod and we’ll hit you up with a personalized email with your name in it and a “thank you”. If we’re feeling generous, we’ll even attach our signature.

Oh and by the way, the reason Gizmodo was red yesterday wasn’t because we were helping The Global Fund. We just sold out to Radio Shack for a day. Go us!

Fifth Avenue’s Apple Store Turns Red

applestoreny.jpgOprah’s reach stretches to New York, turning the 5th Ave. Apple Store red in celebration of the Red 4GB iPod Nano release tomorrow. I think this whole charity thing would be unnecessary of Oprah would just go over there and let people drink her saliva and bask in her Oprah-ness.

Thanks Alan!

Elecom’s Wooden iPod Dock Dazzles, Gives You Splinters

elecomwooddock.jpgIt’s been a good 15 minutes since the last iPod dock came out, so we’re long overdue for a new one. This time, however, at least Elecom made it look a little different from all the others out there by crafting it out of wood. The dock goes by the name (well, model number) of ASP-WP8 and it features all the nonsense that these docks have had for ages now, like a pair of ho-hum speakers and a stereo input jack to hook up other, external audio sources. You’ll be able to grab it in Japan by the end of the month for around $135.

At the end of the day, unless you’ve got a weird thing for wooden furniture, you can probably save yourself the importing fees.

Samsung’s X838 Music Cellphone: Click Wheel Like an iPod, But With 360-Degree Swivel Action

samsungx838.jpgOh look, another music-playing, fun time-having cellphone that we’ll never get to see in the U.S., the Samsung X838. Featuring 1GB of on-board memory, the X838, shall we say, borrows heavily from the iPod: a click wheel-like interface is depicted in the released pictures. Oh, and it plays MP3s, which further proves that it’s ripping off the iPod. There’s a 1.3-megapixel camera on there, too, in case you feel the need to take pictures of yourself in front of a mirror. It’s also supposed to be able to swivel around a full 360 degrees.

If nothing else, you can use the Samsung X838 as part of your one-man show.

Hate the iPod? Check Out the Alternatives, Cool Man

noipods.jpgThere’s a lot of people out there who think they’re too “cool”, too “hip” to own an iPod. (Communists.) For these people, the New York Times has put together a small fiesta of non-iPods to lust after. For the tantalizing details, jump. Word.

After interviewing a college freshman who’s too busy discovering himself to admit that the iPod is a quality product, the article looks at the SanDisk Sansa e200, the Creative Zen V Plus, the iRiver Clix and the Samsung Yepp YP-T9J. All of these anti-iPods come with features that Apple has chosen to ignore, like built-in FM radio tuners and microphones. The iPod still has the edge in terms of aesthetics and is still the slimmest out of all of them.

What many people, especially tech nerds like us, claim keeps them coming back to the iPod is its interface. For a lot of folks, Apple’s scroll wheel and menu structure are a perfect fit; it’s the standard that others are held to, unfairly or not. The Sansa sports the best interface among the anti-iPods as it’s the closest to replicating the iPod’s system without creating copyright issues.

Video. Yes, these anti-iPods also play video, provided you convert the video into a format that the player can read. The Yepp handles video the best, thanks to its brighter screen. The Zen’s fared the worst, due to its smaller and dimmer screen.

So, all in all, the non-iPods are able to play all your digital music, less music bought from the iTunes Store, which is all they really need to do. Oh, and they’re not an iPod. Rock on, rebellious youth.

Mossberg Likes the Latest iPods, iTunes

wsj_ipods.jpgThe Wall Street Journal’s Walter Mossberg and his colleague Catherine Boehret have been testing the latest iPods and iTunes for a few weeks, and in their review they note how Apple has risen to the challenge of the upcoming Microsoft Zune. Overall, they like what they see and hear:

Our verdict: the new iPods are more versatile and less costly than ever, but the new iTunes software is an even bigger improvement, although it has one big downside — its coolest new feature is so graphically demanding that it doesn’t work right on some older computers.

It’s hard not to dig hardware that was already great and has always been superbly integrated with its software, and now you get a lot more storage space for the same price and a 60% brighter screen, too. But so what if the iTunes Cover Flow feature is graphics-intensive? That’s why it looks so cool. Anyway, shed the DRM nonsense that winds its way through iPod/iTunes, and the iPod would actually deserve its runaway popularity.
