Happy New Year! We’re Back!
Well, after a long year of working hard on other projects (not to mention taking better care of my health,) and basically letting this blog fall into a sad state of disrepair, as of tomorrow, the first day of 2007, Church of the iPod will be back in business ![]()
I hope you all had a good 2006, and I’m sure that the new year has much to offer us diehard iPod Power Users… I can hardly wait.
All the best,

No Tunes For You: iTunes Store Gags on Christmas Download Traffic
Okay, so now we see why iTunes sales numbers allegedly plummeted 65% since January of this year: Forrester Research wasn’t counting Christmas Day, when everyone who just got an iTunes gift card or shiny new iPod decided to download their favorite songs and videos at precisely the same time.
Online market researcher Hitwise said more than four times as many people (413%) visited the iTunes store this Christmas than the same day last year. All that traffic brought the site to its knees early this week, tossing out error messages to some while others were able to download music without incident.
Apple might want to consider other methods of moving digital content to customers if it’s ever going to consider HD movie downloads. BitTorrent anyone? – Charlie White

Trinity DS-CHFMT iPod Cupholder Dock
If you’re not too bothered by the idea of an iPod transmitting its signal into your car stereo via staticy-sounding and hissy FM, Trinity has devised its DS-CHFMT dock, formed in a shape that fits into almost any cupholder. Hey, looky there—it conveniently positions the iPod’s controls at your fingertips. All you have to do is plug it into your car’s accessory outlet, insert your iPod via its dock connector, and you’re ready for some ear-jangling but effortless static.
What if you want to drink a cup of coffee while you listen to your music? Well, this device is not a bad idea if you have two cupholders in the center console, and just one driver. Oh, and tin ears. Available in black or white, it’s $65, available so far just in Japan. – Charlie White

iPad vs Tower of Pisa: Leaning Building Battle Photos
![]()
Here are pictures of the Dubai iPod building set to be finished sometime in 2009. And the lean, designed at the same angle as a docked iPod, just beats out the Tower of Pisa’s lean: 6 degrees vs the Tower of Pisa’s 5.5 degree slant.

Lumi Flasher: “I HAVE AN iPOD!”
Saturday, December 23, 2006
Look at me! I have an iPod! Look at me! Steal my iPod! Look at me! These things hold music??
For some, those white earbuds just don’t scream for enough attention. The Lumi Flasher by Tinity Corp uses 5 LEDs (4 red, 1 white) to show muggers from up to 500m away that, yes, you have an iPod. As they knock you over and begin kicking your ribs, you’ll consider the nominal $23 pricetag, happy to have spent the money that would have otherwise been stolen from your wallet.– Mark Wilson

The iPad
Not much in terms of details here, but we hear Dubai-based real estate developer Omniyat Properties is going to build a $800 million building that’s “inspired” by the iPod. The structure—which will definitely have iPod docks in all the toilets—will be started in 2007 and completed in 2009.
Twenty-three stories of iPod goodness. Perhaps someone should tell Omniyat that they shouldn’t get too attached to their project, seeing as a new generation building with touch-screen walls and video playback furniture will come in 2010. – Jason Chen

iTWYF Gloves Lets You Play With Your Gadgets in the Cold
Thursday, December 21, 2006
iTWYF, I touch you with your fingers (uh… ?), is a pair of gloves that allows you to keep you delicate fingers toasty while still being able to operate all your favorite gadgets. The thumb, index and middle finger all have this knob-like thing on the them that make using gadgets while wearing the gloves easy. I suppose these gloves are trying to tackle the problem of wearing gloves and trying to use things like an iPod at the same time, which many of us know is an impossibility. They’re around $40, so they’re a bit pricey for gloves, but if they actually do work as advertised they could make winters walking around the mean street of New York a lot more bearable. – Nicholas Deleon

MyVu iPod Video Glasses Review (Verdict: Look Like Geordie From Star Trek)
So I’m going to start off by telling you what the MyVu is not. It is not a Television replacement, hell it’s not even a laptop replacement for watching videos. But beyond that the MyVu does have some great niche uses. Make the jump to find out what’s awesome and a photo gallery.
First of all it comes with its own battery that attaches to the back of the iPod giving you enough juice to watch 3 full length movies. I haven’t officially been able to verify this, but I am already through two movies with a decent amount of battery left.
Secondly while the screen only compares to about a 20 inch screen from a couple of feet away. It is still nice for things like riding on a plane, where you don’t have to compromise your neck or have your tray table down. It’s also great for while your bed ridden in the hospital, like my Dad. He’s been in the hospital now for a couple days and is sick of watching the 10 channels he gets on the hospital TV. So I loaded up his iPod with a couple of movies and TV shows, and now he’s set.
Aside from those things the MyVu does have a couple of faults. First off there aren’t any options to adjust the color. And at least the model I have has a washed out effect. This might be the result of a MyVu feature, which is the ability to “see through” the glasses. Which is quite handy when walking around the apartment while watching videos, which I don’t recommend.
All things aside this is going to fill a very small market effectively, especially at the $300 price tag. But it’s good to see attempts being made to make the iPod 5G video viewing more useful.– Ben Longo

Renew Your iPod: Fastmac iPod Batteries
When our 3G iPod was getting only two to three hours battery life from a charge, we decided that it was time to try one of those third party iPod batteries people have been talking about for years.
They said the iPod was fairly easy to pop open the iPod and change the battery despite the lack of any physical openings. Well, whoever “they” are, they totally didn’t account for our lack of manual skills. It took us a total of an hour and a half and two people to get this thing open.
The problem comes from the fact that the metal back and the plastic front to the iPod are flush, so there’s no easy way to pull the two apart. The Fastmac battery kit comes with two blue prying tools in order to do so. Because these tools are plastic, and thus, wear down easily when shoving it up against the iPod’s metal, if you don’t get the iPod open on the first few tries, your tool becomes less and less useful. You wouldn’t want a metal tool, because it’d scratch up your precious MP3 player’s finish. Thus, it takes a long ass time to get the iPod open.
Once that was done, everything else was cake. Take out the hard drive, disconnect the cable, and replace the battery. You’ll have to exercise a bit of care, as the connectors are pretty fragile, but nothing you can’t do in less than four minutes.
The new battery got us about seven or eight hours of battery life, around the same as the original battery. An iPod as good as new—save for all the dirt and scratches from years of use—for just $19. Definitely a good deal.
Be prepared to set aside a block of time in order to get your iPod open if you’re not quite so handy. And don’t be afraid to use a lot of force when prying. – Jason Chen

Apple Keynote Safety Dates

Lots of impatient Mac users go through the same inner struggle every December. “I want a new mac now, but Macworld is right around the corner.” Well if you really must give in to your urges try and at least wait until December 26 or even better December 30.
That’s because when dealing with new releases Apple has two different policies.
Policy 1: Standard Apple return policy. 14 days from date of purchase + a 10% restocking fee.
Earliest Safety Date: December 26th
Policy 2: If Apple releases a new model of your machine thereby reducing the price of your model or just drops the price. You have 10 days from date of purchase to get the new price with $0 in fees.
Earliest Safety Date: December 30th
So if you have to have it now, try and wait a little longer. That way in January when the Keynote comes around, you won’t be quite as scornful towards your old Macbook Pro that you bought in Decemeber.– Benjamin Longo

Ministry of Sound Portable iPod Case and Speaker
All you X-taking, water-drinking Ministry of Sound fans should be very excited to hear that MoS is lending its name to more high quality gadgetry. Now we’ve got the Mi-Sound iPod case which both protects your iPod from scratches and functions as a portable speaker system. It’s capable of outputting MoS-approved sound at 0.6W. It’s not too much more expensive than many of the other iPod cases out there, but the inclusion of a speaker is very much appreciated. That way, when your teeth are grinding uncontrollably on the way back to your home after a fun night out, you can listen to even more Cosmic Gate. Dunhill Alligator Skin iPod Speaker Is For The Animal Lover In Your Life
Now here’s a set of iPod speakers with an interesting gimmick. Made by Dunhill (they make fancy suits, accessories and other things you likely cannot afford), the casing of these iPod speakers are made out of alligator skin. The speakers themselves are from the iPod HiFi, so what you’re paying for is nothing more than a fancy alligator skin. How much you’re paying is unknown, Dunhill’s horribly designed Web site being no big help in finding out either.
So if you’ve some (a lot?) money to burn and need to show up your friends’ iHomes and whatnot, contact your broker to see if you can go shopping at Dunhill this weekend. I’m all for recklessly endangering animals, so I fully endorse this product. – Nicholas Deleon

Beach Party In A Tube: The Stowaway Boomtube H2O1 iPod Speaker System
Here’s something a little different in the portable iPod speaker department — it’s ThinkOutside’s Stowaway Boomtube H201.
At just 2.75” wide by 12.5” long, this tubular iPod stereo should fit nicely into a student’s backpack or messenger-bag, and it apparently provides for five hours of music playback. But that tube isn’t just for looks — it actually acts like a sub-woofer of sorts, for pumping out that bad bass-end.
The Stowaway Boomtube H201 also sports a pair of two-inch neodymium drivers, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and something that ThinkOutside calls MaxxBass™ technology.
Also features: twist-on speakers with nodized aluminum housing, aluminum-cone speakers, integrated crossover & EQ, and compatibility with most iPods, MP3 players, and even MP3 cell phones.

Apple’s iPod U2 Special Edition – Now In 5G!
A few years back I bought my wife the original U2 Special Edition iPod as a birthday present (she’s a U2 fanatic!) and today the thing still works as great as it did back then, but we’ve often wondered if Apple would ever get around to updating it.
I mean, there are something like a bajillion U2 fans worldwide, and it only makes sense to continue marketing the iPod to all of those adoring fans.
Well, they finally did it: Apple has announced the release of their new 5G iPod U2 Special Edition – and this one’s a beauty. Here’s a bit straight from the horse’s mouth–
The new iPod U2 Special Edition. As distinctive as the band it salutes. Red Click Wheel. Black metal back engraved with the band’s signatures. 30GB(1) of storage with room for 7,500 songs, up to 25,000 photos, and up to 75 hours of video for $329.
It’s sleek, it’s sexy, it’s the new U2 iPod… this one’s gonna’ hurt my pocketbook.

Hi-Fi For Your iPod: Ignitek’s iCarrier Speaker System
What’s 3-feet tall, weighs nearly 20 pounds, and absolutely dwarfs your iPod?
Give up? It’s Ignitek’s iCarrier Hi-Fi Sound System for the iPod, and it certainly makes a statement — though what that statement is I’m not too sure.
According to Ignitek, the iCarrier, though menacingly large compared to your iPod, actually sports a very small footprint of less than a square foot… meaning it should fit easily into an empty corner of your room.
And to coax that true Hi-Fi soundout of your iPod, the iCarrier features a 45-watt amp driving a pair of 5.25” subwoofers, four 2” mid-range drivers, and two .75” tweeters.
It’s also comes with a handy dandy remote control, and a charging dock with inserts for all iPod models. Excellent…

Boostaroo Revolution: Clean-Up Those Cruddy mp3s
Serious audiophiles have been complaining about the less than optimal quality of many mp3 files these days, and I can’t blame them – many people thought the switch from vinyl to CD brought a loss of warmth to music reproduction, but that’s nothing compared to what has happened with highly compressed audio.
Of course, if you’re burning your own CDs for use on your iPod you have full control of compression levels, but when you buy your music off of iTunes you’re pretty much stuck with what you get – until now…
The Boostaroo Revolution is a small electronic audio device that takes the music coming out of your iPod or other mp3 player and scrubs it up good before sending it to your headphones – in fact, it increases the volume of your audio files by four times! According to the manufacturer–
The Revolution will give your audio an expansive 400% volume increase, while at the same time providing high definition sound. Our patented circuit breaks apart compressed audio signals into three seperate audio channels. This effect not only produces a highly defined sound, but creates imaged surround sound as well.
The Boostaroo Revolution uses two AAAA batteries (20 hours of use,) and is just over 4-inches long and less than an inch thick. It even splits your headphone signal so you can share your ipod tunes with a friend!

Tiny But Tantalizing: Apple’s New iPod Shuffle
OK, so it’s been basically like forever since I posted on this blog, but I just had to come out of hiding for this.
Today Apple released its much anticipated new iPod Shuffle (aff.), which is now so freakin’ small that it almost makes Saturday Night Live’s famous iPod skit seem downright prescient (ooh, I’m busting out the big words now!)
The new iPod Shuffle––weighing in at just over half an ounce, and measuring just 1.62“ wide––sports a full gigabyte of flash RAM, making it capable of holding 240 songs… all without putting the squeeze on your pocketbook: it sells for just $79.
As Apple say on their website, the tiny new iPod Shuffle is ready to wear––
Clip it to your coin pocket. Clip it to your bag. No matter where you clip your skip-free iPod shuffle, you’ll have instant access to music. And iPod shuffle’s anodized aluminum enclosure goes with absolutely everything. Put it on, turn it up, and turn some heads.
And just in time for Christmas, too ; )

United Pampers Geeks with iPod Connector and XM Radio
I admit, I don’t like flying, but book me on United’s new “First Suite” service and I’ll literally be on cloud 9. In addition to your own 15.4-inch LCD, the service has seats that come with their own iPod connector so geeks like me can keep their player juiced on those long inter-continental flights. Once you get sick of your iPod, you can sample up to 50 XM Radio channels free of charge using the complimentary noise-canceling cans. There’s even a universal power plug for your laptop. Ironically, my favorite feature has nothing to do with tech. Instead it’s the seat, which transforms into a 6-foot, 6-inch bed. Finally a bed big enough for us tall folks. – Louis Ramirez

The iPhonic Lives. Good Thing the Trademark Does Not Belong to Cisco
An interesting set of speakers with an interesting name, the iPhonic from Saitek is meant to be carried and played wherever people congregate. Supposedly.
Combining the iPhonic with an iPod turns them both into something similar to the Samsung YP-K5, a player with the speakers built in. Most people probably have little use for a pocket speaker that runs off of 4 AAA batteries or a DC power adapter that’s not provided, but travelers and annoying dudes on busses will most likely find an application. – Jason Chen

Sony to Launch Rival to iTunes for PSP
Sony has announced a video download service for the PlayStation Portable that is designed to compete with iTunes.
Sony plans on launching their new movie download service in early 2007. This is a new rival to the Apple iTunes will allow the user to download movies to a computer and transfer the movies to a MemoryStick memory card for viewing on the PSP.
The new service is developed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and complements the more than 20 million Sony PSPs sold worldwide. One drawback is the lack of a built-in hard drive for the PSP. Sony does state that the 4GB MemoryStick holds up to 10 feature films, but the Apple iPod video has 30GB and 80GB internal drive and Microsoft's Zune player a 30GB drive.
One advantage that the PSP has to the Zune and the iPod is the screen size. The PSP enjoys a 4.3 inch widescreen display while the Zune has a 3 inch and the iPod a 2.5 inch screen. The PSP further offers a nigher resolution and more colors. Of course we have seen the dwindling offering of the Sony UMD film format, so it appears that Sony may be trying to beef-up the movie offering for the PSP again using the download service and their MemoryStick.

iPodWeek - The Best of iLounge
Friday, December 15, 2006
This week at iLounge: A massive overhaul of our realtime Accessory Guide has made it easier than ever to search through our database of well over 2,000 iPod accessories. Covering over 50 different categories, the guide is packed with speaker, headphone, FM transmitter, and case reviews, plus First Looks at the latest and greatest new accessories.
In reviews: Besides reviewing a staggering number of second-generation iPod nano cases, we’ve looked at the weirder new genre of Speaker Cases, a Frankenaccessory combination of speaker and iPod case you never knew you wanted. Three such monsters were reviewed this week: iHome’s $70, bike mount-ready iH19 is the best of them, followed by Kensington’s $30, NXT flat panel speaker-based FX 300, and then another $70 one called iMainGo, which had a smart design but serious speaker problems.
Also, clock radios: In anticipation of the arrival of XtremeMac’s cool-looking Luna, we looked at two low-end clock radios from Jensen and Excalibur, each sold for under $80. Jensen’s square JiMS-190 sounds good, but readers have complained about different electronic problems from unit to unit, while Excalibur’s iBlaster Clock Radio ships with a busted AM radio and flat, muddled sound.
Astroturf Watch: This week’s phony viral iPod marketer is iSymphony, a company that grafted an iPod dock on top of an otherwise unremarkable CD player and speaker system. We’ve caught iSymphony posting multiple fake comments pretending to be from satisfied customers, and they’ve continued even after admitting to it, so we’ve had to warn our readers. Does the world really need another boring iPod speaker system? We think not.
In news: Apple posted its Best of 2006 iTunes charts, revealing the 100 most downloaded albums and songs on the iTunes Store. Analysts said they expect Apple to sell between 15.5 and 17 million iPods this holiday quarter. comScore Networks reported that revenue from the iTunes Store rose by 84% during the first three quarters of 2006 versus last year. And Marware and DLO both introduced new products for the second-generation iPod shuffle.

DLO's iPod Shuffle Accessories
Stray dogs go where the food is, and accessory makers go where the money is. In this case, they’re flocking to the iPod Shuffle, which by recent reports, seems to be selling pretty damn well despite its lack of a screen.
As a result, DLO just released two accessories for Apple’s player. First is the DLO Action Jacket, which lets you insert the already clip-friendly Shuffle into an armband to wear on your bicep. The second is a DLO PowerBug, which is a USB cable and an AC adapter to charge up the Shuffle. The PowerBug is $22, and the Action jacket is $19. – Jason Chen

Apple iTunes sales plummet 65%
Although Apple's iPod has grabbed 63 percent of the portable audio players market, the first half of 2006 showed a 65 percent drop in iTunes sales, according to Forrester Research.
The average transaction size also dropped by 17 percent.
Forrester also revealed every time an iPod is purchased, Apple sells 20 iTunes songs. This leads many to believe that iPods can hold hundreds or thousands of songs, so many consumers are looking to other means to load their devices with musical content.
This could be either through ripping existing CDs to the iPods, sharing MP3 files with friends or through piracy.
Apple still made a profit on its iTunes Store for its last reported quarter despite the drop in sales. Apple also notes that iTunes will remain an essential part to its overall business.
"Our view continues to be that selling music and TV shows and now movies helps us to sell iPods and accessories," said Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer.

Marware’s USB iPod Shuffle Dock
Thanks to Apple ditching the direct-to-USB feature of the 1G Shuffles in the updated 2G models, you can no longer plug the player directly in to your laptops. But with a $20 Travel Dock from Marware, you have a solution that’s just about as good.
The dock is as slim as a standard USB stick, so it won’t be blocking other USB devices with its fat midsection. There’s USB 2.0 support and even a fancy blue LED to show you when it’s on. – Jason Chen

Stalking 101: Hack the Nike+iPod Sport Kit
A couple of scientists at the University of Washington managed to build a small scanner that could read the RFID signals that the Nike+iPod sports kit puts out. The range on these Nike devices are 60 feet, so it would be very easy for the right geeky person to track your every move. The scientists also linked their scanning system to Google maps for ultra-precise movement monitoring.
The point? If there is even the slightest chance that you may have a very geeky stalker, you may want to avoid running at night because these Nike + iPod kits are easily hackable, as it seems. – Travis Hudson

Detroit Pistons Selling 1G iPod Shuffle Knockoff
We suppose now that the iPod Shuffle looks like a paperclip, this wouldn’t be such a big deal. But we’d be remiss if we didn’t show you the Detroit Piston’s new MP3 player, which they apparently contracted a Chinese knockoff company to make. Notice the resemblance? Yeah.

Apple Says iTunes Sales Just Fine
Word on the street yesterday was that Apple’s iTunes Store’s sales plummeted during the first half of 2006. Today Apple claims that that is “simply incorrect,” but still refuses to actually reveal how much money iTunes makes. Apple supposedly made a profit for the three months since September, but the financial research company that first called shenanigans on Apple’s numbers says there’s not a whole not of room for profit, what with all the credit card transaction fees and everything. Isn’t it great when companies squabble?

Pantech IM-U160’s Display is Too Nice For a Cellphone
Wow, looks like someone was paying attention to all those video iPod mock-ups from earlier in the year. The IM-U160 cellphone might be the last gasp of air for Pantech, since the company seems to be going through some financial troubles. From a feature perspective it’s pretty much a standard issue Korea-only phone: basic multimedia support, two megapixel camera, microSD, etc. The display, on the other hand, is something to behold. It’s 2.6-inches and dominates the phone’s design. When closed, the phone appears to be little more than an attractive display.
You bet your bottom dollar there’s more pics after the jump.

It’s really a shame to hear that Pantech is having some hard times since they consistently release things that are very easy on the eyes. Granted, they almost never come out here, but every product release of theirs does give us the opportunity to check out their lovely models. – Nicholas Deleon

Cambridge Soundworks PlayDock i: Subwoofer, Very Familiar Design
Due this January, Cambridge Soundworks’ PlayDock i combines the company’s advanced audio circuitry (somewhere, Orwell is crying) with the mass appeal of iPod compatibility. It works only with newer iPods (4G to the nano) but the inclusion of a built-in subwoofer (for listening to Nas, of course) is a welcome addition. Besides its one unified speaker look, which looks suspiciously like the Apple iPod Hi-Fi, the PlayDock i does everything that iPod speaker-docks have done since the dawn of time: charges the iPod, has video output, etc.
It should hit stores for around $200, if you can get past the point that companies have been selling the same thing now for several years. – Nicholas Deleon

Nike+ iPod Sport Kit AnyShoe Adapter
Have a hankering for the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, but don’t feel like shelling out nearly 100 clams for those special Nike shoes? Now you can attach the SwitchEasy RunAway AnyShoe Adapter to the shoelaces of any ol’ shoes and slip that little sensor inside, instead of placing it in that special recessed area underneath the insole of the Nike+ shoes. Pick out your favorite color AnyShoe Adapter for under 12 bucks.
Be warned: while all the other sheep are gushing about the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, I have a gripe. I have the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit and the accompanying Nike Moire shoes, and I like those shoes better than the sensor, which can’t seem to figure out how far or fast I’m walking. Maybe it’s just for runners, but for walking the thing is wildly inaccurate, even to the point of being insulting. It’s no fun to walk 5 miles and some worthless dumbass thingamajig says I only walked 2.6. Walkers: avoid. – Charlie White

Rumor: Ion Audio iProjector to be World’s First iPod Dock and Front DLP?
Here’s an interesting concept that we hope sees the light of day: take a low end projector and put an ipod dock on it so you can watch your 5G’s videos on the wall. The iProjector, which gets minus points for its unoriginal name, comes from Ion Audio, a subdivision of turntable and audio equipment maker Numark. Ion is a bit of a secret. They make fun little gadgets, including…
a dual deck, mixing CD player, USB guitars, etc. Excellent, creative stuff.
The iProjector should be just as fun, but also affordable. It has…unspecified inputs, but we’re guessing its limited to standard vid, maybe VGA, and if you’re lucky, component. The 800 by 600 pixel setup does 1000 lumens of light, making it good enough for the 640 by 480 movies you’d buy in iTunes. In the end, its very novel, but let us remind you that projectors are high end sexy gadgetry, even in their cheapest form. So buying one just because it’s an iPod accessory is probably not the smartest thing one could do.
iProjector: It’s not a great idea, but at least its a new one.

WSJ: iPods Break as Soon as the Warranty is Up
The Wall Street Journal took at look at the issue of iPods seeming to give up the ghost about 15 minutes after their warranties expire. Cracked screens, busted hard drives, and of course the infamous slowly dying battery are all issues brought up. The article states that only 5% of iPods need replacing, yet goes on to give all sorts of anecdotal evidence that iPods are the biggest lemon since the Yugo. So which is it, WSJ?

PowerFM: Extended Battery + FM Transmitter + Case

OK it’s that time again Gizmodo’s iPod accessory of the Day. Hah yea right, Gizmodo only doing one iPod accessory per day.
The PowerFM is what I would typically call a pretty useless product. It’s a silicone case, an FM Transmitter and a back up battery for the iPod Nano & fifth-generation iPods. However, the three features have been combined well enough to make this into potentially a Tri-Force-like gadget. That’s right, finally someone had enough foresight to think that we don’t want to carry around 50 extra gadgets just to make our iPods do what we want.
Here’s hoping that the battery actually lasts, the FM transmitter creates a decent signal, and the case keeps the scratches off. Otherwise we’ve got yet another wasted attempt at a potentially useful iPod accessory. The PowerFM will go on sale in December for $80.– Ben Longo

Zune’s Marketshare Isn’t Quite What It Seems
Despite the Zune being declared #2 in sales by NPD Group, the figures aren’t quite what they seem. We have a tip about how it was done, and why the numbers could possibly make the Zune look worse, or better, depending on the unknowns.
Here’s a list of things that could possibly move the Zune’s share up or down.
Up: The study included both flash and hard drive players.
Uncertain: They didn’t include “club stores” like Costco and Wal-Mart.
Down: Data was US only. Zune’s not out in other countries.
Uncertain: Black Friday data wasn’t included, and won’t be until mid-December.
Uncertain: Apple only reports monthly data, and not weekly data. This could possibly move the Zune share down.
Three uncertainties, one up, and one down. Even if they had all this data, the Zune’s probably still #2—and hasn’t dropped to #3—but the share could be higher or lower by a few percentage points. – Jason Chen

Ranut Disney-Themed MP3 Player: Good For Kids, Lousy For You

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge
This week at iLounge: The iPod accessory makers are keeping us busy this holiday season. We posted reviews of the Sonic Impact i-F2 Portable Speakers and three new wireless Scosche accessories — the Bluelife iPod/Universal Bluetooth Car Kit with Hands-Free Microphone, the Bluelife Bluetooth Wireless Home or Portable Stereo Kit, and the Bluelife Bluetooth Headphones & Transmitter. We also put Griffin Technology’s new lineup of cases for the fifth-generation iPod to the test — the Vizor, iClear, California Roll, and Centerstage are all reviewed.
In the First Looks department this week, we checked out several cases, including the Oakley 99037 Case, the Contour Design Showcase nano, and three nano cases from Capdase — the Classy Leather case, Luxury Metal case, and Hip-Hop style soft jacket. We also got our hands on the iSymphony M1 Micro Music System, which combines speakers, CD player, and AM/FM clock radio system and an iPod dock.
In iNews this week, it was reported that the Beatles may soon make their online debut on the iTunes Store, while Hollywood studios pressure Apple to strengthen its iTunes copy-protection scheme. Plus, Universal Music said they might seek a royalty from Apple for every iPod sold, Apple said it does not object to use of the “podcast” term, and checks with retail stores show that salespeople are showing Microsoft’s Zune little love.

Toshiba announced it will ship a 100GB 1.8-inch hard disk next month, the largest yet of this size. The little drive spins at 4200rpm and happens to be exactly the right size to fit into an Apple iPod.
Although Toshiba was careful not to mention anything about its relationship with Apple and how its 1.8-inch disks occupy the interiors of Apple’s 80GB iPods, this is some pretty solid evidence that we’ll be seeing a 100GB iPod soon, perhaps around the same time we see the new iPhone. – Charlie White

ShuffleBud Makes Smallest iPod Even Tinier
The second-gen iPod shuffle is exquisitely tiny, but its overall mass gets a little bigger when you want take it on a trip and you must bring along its included dock. That’s where the ShuffleBud comes in handy, plugging in one side and hooking up the player to USB on the other. And hey, it’s just six bucks.
But hold on a minute here. The doc for the shuffle is so tiny, it’s not a whole lot bigger than this USB attachment. But then, there are those messy wires to deal with, so I guess it actually might be worth the $6.
By the way, I’ve been clipping a shuffle onto my coat for the past week on my daily constitutionals, and there’s something indescribably wonderful about it, especially for listening to a daily group of podcasts. Maybe I don’t hate the iPod so much after all. – Charlie White
