iPod iTunes - Sharing A World Of Music

Sunday, June 24, 2007

iPod iTunesThe iPod is a compact, small piece of stereo equipment that has in today's society become very popular due to the fact that it is convenient and has the capability to store massive amounts of information and music. Purchasing an iPod has also become a sort of fad as well, as numerous people, both old and young, have a feeling that they must join the fad and go out and buy an iPod for themselves.

In many situations an iPod MP3 player comes in handy. For example, in addition to music you can store what are known as podcasts from the Internet that can be listened to while you're outside on the road. Famous for their computer reliability and knowledge, Apple Computer is the manufacturer that produces and holds the patents for this popular device.

Because information can be downloaded from the Internet onto iPods, iPod iTunes are also a significant part of this craze, due to the fact that there are thousands upon thousands of songs to pick from that are available to be downloaded onto your iPod. This is one of the most popular ways to get music onto your iPod that you enjoy listening to.

Popularity Of the iPod iTunes And Its Spread In Modern Culture

As the uses for iPod technology are many in modern society, its primary function or what its most popular for is its ability to download music as well as its storage capability of these small machines. Despite the fact that these devices are small enough to fit into your pocket, their storage capacity is very significant to be able to store thousands of songs at any one point in time. For many people, this is difficult to conceive, however it satisfies the consumers demand for listening to music while on the go at the same time making it convenient and easy.

The fact that you don't have to carry around a bunch of CDs with you or having to listen to static on a radio station or the commercials that go with it is a significant benefit in the majority of most people's minds. Many MP3 players, which are usually less expensive, does not have the downloading and saving capacity of an iPod. Apple Computer's website makes available the downloads which are called iPod iTunes for people who own the iPod. This website has a selection of thousands upon thousands of different kinds of songs and music for individuals to place on to their own players.

Just as there are those who download legitimately iPod iTunes from this site, there are also those known as "hackers" who have discovered numerous ways to copy the music without having to purchase the iPods. This form of activity is illegal and has a penalty associated with it, but it is extremely challenging to law enforcement officials to effectively prosecute people who do this due to the fact that the vast amount of people on the Internet today make this activity difficult to track.

Ironically, there are even books published on different ways to hack the iPod's iTunes website in order to retrieve the music. In this way, it slightly lessens the demand or necessity of having an iPod as it otherwise would have been if this capability were not present on the Internet. Regardless, the popularity of the iPod is still at an all-time high due to its ease of use, high storage capacity and additional capabilities.

Turn iPod into personal recorder

iPod recorderStreaming Networks' new iRecord software lets you record low-quality videos for your iPod.

BY KEVIN HUNT
The Hartford Courant

Streaming Networks' iRecord personal media recorder expands your little iPod world beyond iTunes. It eliminates iTunes -- and your computer, too -- in a neat little end-around that funnels music and movies, free, directly onto your iPod.

It's legal, too, even though it needs occasional software upgrades to keep up with Apple's latest buy-at-iTunes-only firmware in newer iPods. Maybe Streaming Networks (streaming-networks.com) gets away with it because the iRecord produces low-resolution analog material that's plenty good enough for a little iPod but maybe not for snooty digital pirates.

It's for personal use only, right? With iRecord, if you buy Casino Royale on DVD and want to make a copy for your iPod, you don't have to buy it again from iTunes. You simply hook up the iRecord to your DVD player's analog audio-video connections, then plug your iPod into the iRecord's USB port.

That USB port also welcomes a PlayStation Portable gaming device, which includes Memory Stick storage, and generic jump drives. I put all sorts of video -- 60 Minutes, an episode of 24 and a DVD transfer of Master and Commander -- on a jump drive. Once on a jump drive, the video can be played on a computer or a laptop or be transferred into iTunes and back out onto an iPod.

The iRecord yields 320x240 resolution video stored as H.264 files that will play back on iTunes, Windows Media Player and other players as MPEG-4 video. Since late last year, higher-quality video (640x480 resolution) has been available at iTunes. The iRecord images will look fine on a video iPod -- on other iPods, like my Nano, it will record only 128 kilobits-per-second MP3 audio files -- and even on a larger computer screen when shown in a box about 4.5 inches diagonal.

The iRecord converts all wide-screen movies, however, to the square look of older televisions, bordered by horizontal black bars. It also records files no longer than three hours, enough for most movies. If you're recording something longer, the iRecord starts a second file. So you'll lose a little video in the transition. Another imperfection: An oversize iRecord logo appears at the beginning and end of each recording.

It's simple, if tedious, to make a recording. It's all manual. The iRecord, roughly a 4-inch-square box that's an inch thick, has a power button, a record button and the USB port on the side, with connections for analog audio and video (composite or higher-quality S-video) on the back. All analog cables are included.

Connect the iRecord to a DVD player or cable box; press the record button; then start keeping track of time. The iRecord offers no way to monitor the recording, but you can get around that by watching it on the TV fed by that DVD player or cable box.

Apple iPhone - Irresistible Gadgetry

apple iphone cell phoneThe long anticipated release of the Apple iPhone is scheduled for Friday June 29, 2007 at 6pm in each US time zone. The anticipation has been mounting ever since Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, announced the Apple iPhone during his keynote address at Mac World 2007 in San Francisco, CA.

The kind of hype surrounding the iPhone hasn't been seen for a new product announcement since, well, the Apple iPod. This is really no coincidence, since Steve Jobs is a master at stirring up rabid anticipation around new product launches. It also helps that Apple usually comes up with revolutionary product concepts that wind up changing how the world uses technology. Just think back to the Mac, iPod, and iTunes.

An iPhone prototype was kept in a Plexiglas case at the Mac World show like some sort of religious relic or maybe a talisman from another galaxy. Fascinated attendees swarmed the display case, but could only stare in wonder at the mysteriously beautiful object encased within. Sorry, absolutely no touching was allowed! This was cruelty in the extreme since the allure of the Apple iPhone rests in the pleasure of cradling it in your hands and using your fingers to navigate its touch-sensitive screen.

The Apple iPhone will be released first in the US first, and then in Europe during Q4 2007, followed by Asia in 2008. This is one of the few instances in recent memory where a technologically advanced cell phone is being released in the US before the rest of the world. Eat your heart out Japan!

We're now seeing a cultural shift where the cell phone has become a fashion accessory. There are fashion shows that prominently feature cell phones along with matching clothing. The extreme in cell phone as status accessory, are gold-plated and diamond encrusted cell phone models selling for thousands.

Cachet is the bottom line. Regardless of the iPhone's shortcomings, some of which are may prove to be critical, there is no question that the iPhone will be a huge success and demand for it will be off the charts. The demand for the Apple iPhone is already intense and the first shipments will be sure to sell out quickly. The only important question remaining is will the Apple iPhone take its place alongside the Mac and the iPod as iconic products or will it fizzle into obscurity like the Apple Newton and the Cube?

Tuning in to your iPod

ipodYou know how females and males are totally different? I believe it was a male who coined the adage “a picture speaks a thousand words”, and here is an opportunity to prove that saying worthy. The iPod has made its way into the collective consciousness of the developed world being the definitive portable media player, and even its controls have been tacked onto article clothing. With summer already here, what better way than to enjoy your favorite chill out tunes by the beach, sipping on a pina colada while having the hunks drool at your tanned body in a skimpy bikini? That’s all the product description you’ll ever need for the bikini, head on after the jump for the female version.

For males who want to get some iPod action discreetly despite being all dressed up in a suit, there is always the classic black pinstripe from Marks & Spencer which boasts a ’smart fabric’ control pad that has been carefully sewn onto the left lapel, letting the owner adjust the volume level according to his desire. The control pad is hooked to a cable that discreetly runs underneath the lining and plugs into the iPod itself which is tucked away safely into its own pocket. Heck, the lapels also come with loops that keep those pesky headphone wires in place to keep you tangle-free. The entire iPod suit will retail for £149 and can only be dry-cleaned for obvious purposes.

I suppose all male apparel that feature iPod support runs along the same lines. While the idea of an iPod bikini is very tempting (as evident by the picture on the right), when you think of the male equivalent, it is more of a turn off than anything else. After all, seeing one bulge is more than enough – two is just overkill.

Apple iPhone Makes Last Minute Changes To Allay Consumer Fears

Apple iPhoneApple announced today that it expects the iPhone battery to provide up to 8 hours of talk time or 6 hours of internet use. With this announcement, Apple hopes to lay to rest the speculation surrounding poor battery life of iPhone. The hype and buzz around the iPhone continues to grow by the day as the availability date approaches. Apple has announced June 29th, 2007 as the official market date for the iPhone. Many consumers are waiting to get their hands on the first generation of iPhones.

Along with the hype, certain consumers have expressed concerns about the durability of the product. To help allay some of these criticisms, Apple has made some last minute changes to the product. It has upgraded the top surface of the touch-screen to optical quality glass from plastic making it more durable and resistant to scratches. Today's announcement on improved battery life will also go a long way in convincing those resisting the iPhone charm. In addition to the talk time and internet use time, the iPhone battery will support up to 7 hours of video playback and 24 hours of audio playback. How's that for versatility?

Apple iPhone is definitely the most anticipated and talked about cell phone launched ever. Available exclusively through Cingular wireless, the phone comes in 2 models: 6 gigabyte and 8 gigabyte. In addition to all the cool phone features, both the models support multimedia content such as audio and video, internet browsing and picture taking.

Steve Jobs hopes to sell 10M handsets by end of 2008. With a goal that large and so much at stake, it is no wonder that Apple intently listens to the consumers and even changes the product to better appeal its customers.

Analyst: June Quarter iPod Sales Could Hit 10M

Thursday, June 21, 2007

ipod salesPiper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster took a look at the numbers, and he estimates Apple could sell as many as 10 million iPods for the June quarter. That number comes in above the Wall Street consensus of 9.8 million, but below Mr. Munster's earlier prediction of 10.5 million units.

The iPod sales estimate Mr. Munster derived is based on data from NPD, and includes figures for the first two months of the quarter. "Our analysis of iPod unit data from NPD for the month of May leads us to a preliminary iPod approximation of between 9.5m and 10.0m units for the June 07 quarter," he said.

The figures so far show that Apple's iPod lineup is still in high demand, despite the fact that there has not been a significant upgrade or a new model release this year. While some potential iPod buyers are holding out for the June 29 release of the iPhone, a combination iPod and smartphone, those holdouts don't seem to be having a major impact on iPod sales, either.

New iPod models will, however, likely ship later this year after the iPhone. Those new models may well convert into additional new buyer sales as well as upgrade purchases for current iPod owners.

Mr. Munster is maintaining his "Outperform" rating and US$160 target price for Apple stock. Apple is currently trading at $123.02, down 0.64 (0.52%).

Apple Designs iPhone With Customers In Mind

iphone designYou may have already heard about the new Apple iPhone but do you know all the important and interesting features that are sure to make you want to be the first in line to purchase one. In fact the iPhone has been in development for the past two years. The complete version comes with a combination of a wide screen iPod, Internet communications device with desktop capabilities, as well as a mobile phone with texting.

When it is released on June 29th, the iPhone will be offered exclusively through AT&T Wireless. You can only purchase the iPhone with a two year service agreement, and it will run you $499 for a 4GB version, and $599 for the 8GB version. Sounds expensive at first but when you think about the costs of a video iPod which is around $350 then the price doesn't seem unreasonable. Look online for more iPhone features, specs, and photos.

The iPhone is truly unique because it runs on the MAC OS X operating system which makes it easy for users to seamlessly sync data from a MAC or PC. The Apple iPhone will also have complete iTunes integration giving you the ability to retrieve videos, music, and movies. The iPhone also uses Wi-Fi and EDGE to connect you to the Internet. An iPhone user will also have the ability to search and view standard web sites, view HTML Emails, and even get directions with Google Maps. No more getting lost as long as you have your phone on you.

The iPhone is operating by using the multi-touch technology where the user controls the device by sliding their finger across the touch sensitive screen that is a nice 3.5 inches. The iPhone has an amazing quality display that has a resolution of 320 by 480 pixels at 160 pixels-per-inch. The iPhone is only a mere 11.6 mm thick and weighs only 4.8 ounces.

Another neat and extremely useful feature is the iPhone's visual voice mail which shows your voice mail as if they were Emails. This means you have the ability to scroll through a list of voice mails to find the one you want, rather than being forced to listen to every message. You can also use the helpful conference call feature which lets the user connect to two calls at once with one easy to use control. With the iPhone text messaging is made easier with the helpful touch screen key board. This keyboard is advanced enough to predict commonly used word which helps the user avoid commonly misspelled words. There is also a spell check if you want to be sure you haven't misspelled anything.

The iPhone also has three advanced sensors including the proximity sensor which automatically switches from the display and touch screen when the phone is being placed near an ear. The accelerometer sensor has the amazing ability to detect when the user rotates their iPhone from portrait to landscape, and automatically changes the contents of the display as needed. This sensor also allows the users to see the entire width of a web page or photo.

AT&T hires 2,000 extra workers for iPhone launch

at & tBy Sinead Carew

Reuters
Thursday, June 21, 2007; 1:31 PM

NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Inc. (T.N) said on Thursday it has hired 2,000 temporary store workers to handle its much-hyped introduction of the iPhone, the first cell phone from iPod music player maker Apple Inc. (AAPL.O).

The biggest U.S. wireless service provider by customer numbers will be the country's only carrier to offer the device when it goes on sale June 29. AT&T and Apple said they plan to start selling the device starting at 6 p.m. local time in cities across the country.

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said the company hired the extra summer staff for its 1,800 stores in anticipation of "significant demand" for the device. AT&T's wireless division employs a total of about 58,000 people.

The iPhone was first announced in January and combines a music and video player with a Web browser and a touch-sensitive screen in place of a keyboard.

AT&T sales staff have received a total of 100,000 hours of training to sell the device, at "the high end of the normal range" with an average of 6 hours per employee, said Siegel.

Apple, which plans to start selling the phone in all of its 162 retail stores on June 29, did not disclose any plans around training or staffing for the launch.

Apple will also start selling the phone online on the launch date, but AT&T will first launch only in its stores.

"This is such an important product we want to make sure people are fully informed," when they buy it, said Siegel.

AT&T stores will close locally at 4.30 p.m. on that Friday to prepare for the launch, then reopen at 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. that night, according to Siegel.

"We want to free people from the rush of what they would normally encounter on a busy day," he said.

AT&T, which is requiring iPhone shoppers to sign up for a 2-year contract, has not yet revealed the service fees it will charge iPhone customers. The price of an iPhone will be either $500 and $600, depending on the storage space in the phone.

Apple shares rose 1.7 percent to $123.57 in early afternoon trading on Nasdaq. AT&T was 12 cents higher to $39.65 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Looking To Buy Apple iPhone? Get The Details First

movies to iPod
buy apple iphone

The iPhone is a technology marvel. The handheld device is one part iPod, one part cell phone and one part wireless Internet access. The feature list of the eagerly anticipated iPhone is remarkable. From the ability to listen to music and watch movies to cell phone and text capabilities to taking pictures and video all with on board Wi-Fi with fully functional web surfing capabilities, you can essentially do it all when you buy an Apple iPhone.

The iPhone is a beautiful device that prominently features a 3.5" display screen. Noticeably missing from the iPhone are all the buttons typically featured on existing handheld devices. That's because the iPhone utilizes the touch screen method to control input and navigation similar to the iPod.

The iPhone utilizes a version of the Mac Safari web browser which allows full web pages to be re-sized for viewing on the iPhone. It also allows you to zoom in and out of pages. One thing that needs to be addressed is, at the present time, you can't use the iPhone's web capabilities to download music or videos from iTunes. You will need to use your existing PC or Mac to download movies or music and then transfer to the iPhone. This is likely something that will be corrected.

If you're looking to buy the Apple iPhone, you will have two options, a 4GB model with a $499 retail tag and a 5GB version $ that will retail for $599. The iPhone is scheduled for a June 29, 2007 release.

AT&T (Cingular Wireless), is the exclusive iPhone carrier through 2009 so you may need to do a carrier shuffle if you decide to buy Apple iPhone and don't currently utilize the AT&T network.

iPhone's will be available on a first first come, first served basis.

iPhone users will need iTunes account

apple iphoneSan Francisco (IDGNS) - Consumers planning to buy the iPhone when it goes on sale in the U.S. later this month will need to have an iTunes Store account before they can activate the device, according to information on Apple Inc.'s Web site.

Apple will require customers to establish a separate account with its online media service in addition to one with AT&T Wireless Services Inc., which has signed an exclusive U.S. distribution deal for the iPhone.

The move will allow Apple to create its own billing relationship with iPhone customers, rather than collecting payments for any iTunes purchases they make via the mobile operator.

"It would be naive to imagine that Apple wouldn't leverage iTunes with iPhone," said Emma Mohr-McClune, senior analyst for wireless services in Europe at Current Analysis Inc.

Mobile handset vendors, such as Nokia Corp. and Motorola Inc., will be keeping a close eye on Apple's strategy of linking content with handsets, she said.

The posting on the Apple Web site informs potential customers that if they don't already have an iTunes Store account, they should set one up "to save time later."

An Apple spokeswoman in Europe declined to comment further.

The iPhone is due to go on sale in the U.S. on June 29. The company has announced plans for a European release in the fourth quarter of the year but has yet to provide details, such as whether the European version will operate on 3G (third-generation) networks.

Three Reasons June 29th Is The Perfect Launch Date

iPhone June 29The word is finally out and the date is.... Friday, June 29, 2007. That is the official launch date of the much discussed and hyped Apple iPhone. With the announcement of the launch date, Apple has triggered the final segment of the iPhone launch sequence. Upon review of the selection the formal launch date, Apple is again proving that the company is a master of product launches that will benefit both potential customers and stockholders.

First, Apple is benefiting from the enormous ground swell and buzz that has been growing for not only the past few months, but since word first emerged that Apple would be entering the mobile phone market.

Two truisms in marketing are that the best advertising is free and the best positive media is word of mouth. In the past six months, Apple and the iPhone have created a steady firestorm over the internet and throughout the blogging community. The value of this marketing cannot be measured and no company in business today would not love to recreate this buzz.

Second, with the date of June 29th, Apple has, in a sense, created a " Christmas in summer" anticipation for the Apple iPhone. Here is my one rhetorical question of the day: "How would you like to have 17 million potential customers counting down to when they could buy your product?" This anticipation should create a residual marketing ripple for Apple for many months to come.

Third, with the date being the last date of the second quarter, Apple will be able to generate even more buzz with Wall Street as the stock price continues to climb north. In the last week, the stock has climbed over six dollars per share on the news of the launch date. With more news on the iPhone coming out each day the closer we get to the launch date, the stock price should continue to move in a positive direction. There will almost definitely be a mini Day of Judgment when the street is able to figure out what the sales for the last two business days of the second quarter will mean to the third quarter.

This news will not mean much to the average consumer, but to the market makers, this information is the stuff dreams are made. And maybe even a small fortune or two. Apple appears to be redefining the way a company should launch a product in the future. The Apple iPhone has generated a buzz and interest that few companies will ever achieve. Now is it just up to Apple to deliver a product that will match the excitement. One thing is for sure. The clock is ticking and now Apple must deliver a product that the public and Wall Street sees as nothing short of remarkable.

Download Movie on Your iPod - How to Download Movie on Your iPod Easily

Monday, June 04, 2007

ipod movieYou see, iPod is different than other video players, and the reason it is different is it only supports one type of a video format which is MP4 of course. You probably already know that but the fact is a fact, you can't play anything besides MP4.

Although, you know when there's a problem, there's a solution, and most of the times there is a very simple solution. And guess what, I have found a solution to that problem too. If you have lots of movies on your PC then you obviously need to convert them somehow into MP4 format so you can play them on your iPod.

Check your video format, they are AVI, MPG, MPEG, WMA and many many other formats that you may not know of, and of course you don't know what that stands for and what is the difference. But that doesn't really matter, because there is a program than can turn any video format into MP4 without losing quality! It's a very easy to use piece of software, so any user with any type of experience can use it.

This is by far the best investment that I have ever made, and I would recommend it to everyone, everyone who enjoys watching movies and cartoons. Yeah, I also watch cartoons like Family Guy and Simpsons on my iPod. :) It allows you to convert any movie, any video clip, any cartoon in any format into MP4 and then you just transfer it to your iPod and enjoy! Feel free to visit my page to read more about the move converter!

Harry Lake loves to travel and wherever he goes he takes his iPod to watch movies and listen to music. Visit my web site to find out how you can download movie on your ipod easily.

iPhone: Are 10 million units in 2008 too optimistic?

The iPhone frenzy has begun, but let’s cut to brass tacks: Can the iPhone really ship 10 million units in 2008?

That 10 million figure is what Apple is tossing out there as expectations for iPhone sales (see conference call transcript confirming the figure). Adrian Kingsley-Hughes notes that the 10 million benchmark is a big hurdle. These expectations present an interesting conundrum since Wall Street expects more than 10 million iPhone units to ship. To Wall Streeters 10 million units would be a failure.

Meanwhile, the expectations for the iPhone are reaching frenzy proportions leading up to the June 29 launch (see Techmeme).

Adrian writes:

It’s usually bad luck to bet against Steve Jobs, but I still find it hard to see how Apple is going to shift 10 million iPhones in 2008.

I agree on both counts. For starters, Adrian is a bit nutty for doubting Jobs. Then again I’m also doubtful of the 10 million unit mark. To be sure, the 1 million unit mark for iPhone is a no-brainer–Apple’s core customers will buy 1 million iPhones easily. In fact that’s part of Apple’s secret sauce. Apple has a core customer base that will buy the first 1 million units of whatever Jobs cooks up. That fact means Apple can move up the learning curve much faster and perfect the device.

Other companies struggle to ship 1 million units. Given Apple’s customer base it gets to 1 million units just by adding water.

But for 10 million iPhone units a lot of things have to go right. Among them:

  • Apple needs to ramp up production quickly.
  • The iPhone needs a ready supply of parts.
  • Apple needs to overcome sticker shock. For Apple’s core users paying $499 to $599 for an iPhone is a given. But other customers are likely to be cost conscious.
  • Apple is in bed with only AT&T. If other network providers–Verizon, T-Mobile et al.–I’d be more inclined to buy the idea 10 million units.

Perhaps everything will go right but expectations for the iPhone don’t allow for anything but perfection.

Apple says iPhone to go on sale June 29

iphone saleSAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc. <AAPL.O> will start selling its iPhone on June 29, a debut that will test whether the company's design success with Mac computers and iPod media players can carry over into mobile handsets.

Apple announced the date on Sunday, with three television commercials showing off the phone's large touchscreen and ability to watch video, play music and display photos. The ads can also be seen on the company's Web site.

The U.S. launch date was confirmed by a company spokesman. Apple plans to sell the iPhone in Europe and Japan eventually, but has not announced specific dates.

The iPhone will cost $500 or $600, depending on the amount of memory included and will be sold through the online and physical stores of Apple and AT&T Inc. <T.N>, which is the only current service provider. AT&T has exclusive iPhone rights for two years.

Apple's chief executive, Steve Jobs, unveiled the iPhone in January after months of speculation that the company was working on a mobile phone wrapping in features of its popular iPod music and video players.

Worldwide cellphone sales are running at about 1 billion units a year, and Jobs noted that if Apple took a 1 percent market share in 2008, that would mean the company would sell 10 million iPhones.

The debut of the iPhone poses a challenge to other handset makers such as Motorola Inc. <MOT.N> and Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, who are also selling highly profitable high-end "smart phones."

AT&T, the biggest U.S. phone company, is also hoping the iPhone's draw will give it an edge over rivals such as Verizon Communications Inc. <VZ.N> and Sprint Nextel Corp. <S.N>.

Executives from rival companies say the iPhone's high price may turn off many potential customers, while the buzz over the device could carry over to other fancy phones.

The iPhone will come with either 4 gigabytes or 8 gigabytes of flash memory for storing video, music and photos, and does away with all buttons in favor of a touch screen. It has been lauded for features such as its built-in camera, light and orientation sensors, and sleek design.

Critics also note that it uses GSM, an older wireless technology that is gradually being supplanted by so-called 3G networks that can transmit data much faster.

Apple's stock has been sensitive in recent weeks to any rumors about the iPhone's launch.

Last week the shares rose on a media report that the phone would be launched on June 20. In mid-May the shares fell after a technology news Web site posted an e-mail purportedly from Apple that claimed the phone would be delayed. Apple said the e-mail was a hoax.

Apple shares rose 7 percent last week and have nearly doubled over the past year.

Beyond iTunes: Getting Video to the iPod

The iPod's video capabilities are not limited to what you can find on iTunes for two bucks per show. There exists a wide array of software designed to convert DVDs, recorded TV programs or any other video file into the iPod-supported MPEG4 format. Generally, the more you're willing to pay, the more options you'll get.

iTunes may have a great selection of videos for sale, but consumers will always want more. Transferring supported media to the device is a very simple task -- just drag the files into iTunes, hit Sync and it's there.

However, a problem arises when you want to watch media not produced in MPEG4 format, the format favored by the iPod. Fortunately, there are several applications that allow the conversion of nearly any video to satisfy the insatiable urge to devour every TV show and movie you own with your iPod.

Free Stuff

The desire to get video to such a popular device should be so widespread that there must be a few freebies out there that will do the job, right? There are, but remember: You get what you pay for.

TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO)  owners may find TiVo2Go helpful. TiVo2Go is a free program found on the TiVo Web site. If your TiVo and your computer are connected to the Internet, you can transfer shows from the DVR to your hard drive. The program even has automation features that will instantly begin downloading a selected show every time a new episode is recorded.

The files are stored in an encrypted MPEG2 format, making them pretty difficult for most third-party conversion apps to crack. They can be played as video files on the user's own computer. The catch is that these MPEG2s won't just play on an iPod; unencrypting and converting them to an iPod-friendly MPEG4 file requires the premium version of TiVo2Go, which costs US$25. The premium version can also convert to PlayStation Portable formats as well as those supported by certain smartphones. The conversion process is also automated, meaning a user can set up the system  to have MPEG4 files ready to drop into iTunes shortly after they're recorded on TiVo without having to do a thing.

Even the premium service has its shortcomings. The conversion process is a real resource hog if you have even a slightly old computer -- don't expect to do much multitasking when it's busy. On the other hand, if you have a new computer running Windows  Vista, the program won't work. Once a user has purchased the $25 unlock code for the premium version of the application, the controls to begin converting to MPEG4 are not easy to find. Several frustrating minutes may be spent hunting around the menu controls.

Buying the premium version isn't always necessary, though. Once a video file has made it to one's hard drive, via TiVo2Go's free program or any other means, it can be converted with Videora iPod Converter, an impressive piece of software with many of the options of its shareware counterparts. Be forewarned -- it is completely filled with ads that talk incessantly. I nearly ripped all my hair out while converting files to test it. It has a video wizard, which makes converting videos a breeze for those who are unsure of what quality and options they want. It is also compatible with many formats, including the non-premium TiVo2Go files. The speed is impressive, but not astounding. If you think saving the money now is worth the hours of therapy ahead, this is a great choice. Overall I consider this software very impressive. If not for the ads, I would choose this as my favorite.

For those who absolutely must have the latest episode of "Heroes" on their iPods, but are not willing to deal with the huge amount of advertisements included with Videora iPod Converter, I would suggest DirectShow Dump. This program converts the TiVo2Go files to a much easier to handle MPEG2 format. Of course this will not play on your iPod, but the conversion to MPEG4 format is easily performed by your favorite converting program. This process requires two conversions, so expect to wait a while.

Shareware Solutions

Avex DVD to iPod Video Suite is a fairly straightforward program with many features. The video encoding options are impressive. It is capable of encoding video with H264 compression, which decreases the size of the video file while maintaining the desired quality. This software is capable of converting MPEG, Windows Media, AVI, Real player and DVDs to the MPEG4 format playable on the iPod. While this does cover many of the most common formats, it certainly could use a few additions, like QuickTime  movies and TiVo2Go's MPEGs. This software is $45 if you decide to purchase it.

M2 Convert for iPod is also rather simple. The first thing you may notice is a rather slim user interface. It appears aesthetics were not the designer's main focus. It does support many more formats than Avex DVD to iPod Video Suite, but it still lacks TiVo2Go compatibility. H264 is supported and the quality of video can be easily adjusted. This software seems a bit slower than Avex's solution to the conversion problem. Priced at $30, it is a little cheaper.

Xilisoft iPod Video Converter 3 has the benefits of all the features of M2 Convert for iPod without the speed decrease. This software is capable of converting almost any video you can find at blazing speeds. The converter supports the essential H264 format. It also has a sleek user interface with a breathtaking number of options. Unfortunately, this application does not support TiVo2Go either. Despite the lack of TiVo support and its silly name, I would suggest this product for converting your videos for your iPod. This software is also $30 -- a modest price considering its ease of use and capabilities.

Converting Like a Pro

These programs offer a wide variety of options that can become rather confusing. If conserving drive space is a high priority, consider using 320 x 240 resolution. It is unlikely that you will notice the difference on the iPod, and it creates a very small file. This is especially important for DVDs, which can run for hours and create massive files. If your iPod happens to have the larger hard drive and never seem to fill it, go ahead and choose the 640x480 resolution. Bit rate should be around 1,200. Again, this will change little of your experience while saving quite a bit in disc space. H264 compression will help a great deal.

When it comes to audio, do not get anything less than 96 Kbit/sec, though 128 Kbit/sec is preferred. Audio is a very small portion of your video, but any downgrade is likely to stand out. Be sure to select two channel or stereo as well. Bad audio could easily have you deleting your hard-earned work and starting over.

Splitting a file can be very useful for many applications, such as splitting a DVD to fit on multiple CDs. The MPEG4 format has a much better compression than DVD, with a dramatic scale down in resolution. This is unlikely to ever be a problem with the large hard drives on today's iPods. Most users will likely ignore this feature.

By optimizing your movies for the iPod you can drastically decrease the lengthy process of conversion. While staring at the desk waiting for your favorite movies to convert, remember that MPEG4 is an amazing format with great compression. If Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL)  chose the old MPEG2 format instead, you would be lucky to fit half as much video on your favorite portable device.

And the Survey Says - You Know Nothing About Cell Phone Manufacturers

Cell Phone ManufacturersA recent survey of U.S. college students, the largest users of cell phones in the world, has discovered an interesting fact: Over 90% of students don't know anything about their cell phone's manufacturer. While not exactly an earth-shaking revelation, you'd think that students would be experts on their most used possession. If this is not the case, then some correction is in order. In this article, we'll briefly take a look at some of the history of cell phone makers and a couple of their most popular phones.

While the cell phone in your pocket may ring with the latest ring tone or allow you to take picture-perfect snapshots of family and friends, plenty of interesting tidbits of information may help you better understand the manufacturer of your cell phone. When it comes to the mobile communication that has easily become an essential lifeline for many, there is much more than LCD screens, metal and plastic that go into the production of a cell phone. Countless hours of imaginative brainstorming, creative design meetings, and a reputation for crossing the boundaries of technology surround the three main manufacturers of cell phones - Motorola, Samsung and Nokia.

Motorola

Before there was Motorola, there was the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928. It wasn't until 1947 that "Motorola" became the official name of the company after being used as its trademark since the 1930s. Founders Paul and Joe Galvin dreamed up the name Motorola when the business focused on producing car radios. At that time, it was customary in the U.S. to utilize the "-ola" suffix to refer to audio equipment. So, the name Motor-ola seemed a natural. The initial pursuits of Motorola also involved the manufacturing of radio-related products, such as the world's first walkie-talkie. Before Motorola became a U.S. household name, the company had established a strong foothold in the world of computer chips, digital cable boxes and modems.

While a multitude of Motorola cell phones decorate the market, there are a few models that stand out from the rest, capturing a widespread response from the public. The Motorola RAZR V3 is convenient in size, but still offers satisfying MPEG4 video playback, video capture, Bluetooth and digital camera capabilities. Another great selection from Motorola is the newer ROKR, which allows users to play, sort, store and maintain music on their very own iTunes Digital Jukebox. Additional features include multimedia messaging, a VGA camera with 4x digital zoom and pre-installed extended memory.

Samsung

When you consider products created by the Samsung Group, you probably would have never guessed the company name translates into "three stars." It is Samsung Electronics (founded in 1969) that falls under the larger umbrella of the South Korean corporation with a history that begins in 1938. Today, the company is known as one of the largest electronics manufacturing companies in the world. The company name has become associated with top quality refrigerators, plasma televisions and flash memory, among many other things.

The Samsung Helio Heat is a popular cell phone on the market, offering a jam-packed bundle of online features, including access to an array of social sites, such as Digg, MySpace, Google Maps, and Wikipedia. With attractive black or gold colors, the slider-type design is perfect for fashionable students. The touch sensitive screen also encourages easy-access control use. The Samsung Blackjack is also making waves with its slimmer body and above-average video quality. Decently executed photos with good color also add to the allure of a mobile unit that delivers easy navigation.

Nokia

While the Nokia Corporation sounds like a company straight out of Japan, this worldwide cell phone manufacturer is actually a Helsinki, Finland venture. With a stronghold on the overall market, Nokia possesses a deep company history that begins in 1865. Despite a ton of mobile phone selections on the market, Nokia still accounts for about 36% of the global piece of the pie. With an exceptional understanding of what consumers look for in a cell phone (in terms of design, price and function), Nokia continues to blow the competition out of the water.

When looking at some of the more popular Nokia brands, one sees that the N73 has a 3.2-megapixel camera with video-recording technology, integrated music player, Bluetooth and a dazzling screen. The phone also accommodates users looking for extra-long talk time and battery life. The Nokia 6288 is another popular choice that comes with a bundled 512 mini-SD card, Bluetooth capabilities and further improvements that branch off from previous models.

Well, how does it feel to be on the other side of the 90%? Now you know more about cell phone manufacturers than the great majority of the leading demographic group that use them. Cell phones are here to stay, as the newest and latest technology continues to evolve with advanced capabilities beyond our wildest imagination. Whether it is sending an email, downloading a new game, or sending a picture message to loved ones at home, knowing a little about your cell phone's manufacturer may help in choosing the right cell phone for you.
