Paint it Black iPhone is slicker than the original

paint-it-black-iphone.jpg

If you want to make your iPhone feel more yours, and I don't mean by just hacking it, you could take a page from Mark Hoekstra's book. He modified his iPhone to be all black, super slick, and sporting an old-school Apple logo. It's hot.

He used the Apple logo from an old 1989 Apple II keyboard, sanding the fixture to fit perfectly over the home button at the bottom of his phone. He then spraypainted the entire case black, creating a really awesome effect. It's really slick and totally unique. Nice work, Mark.

Apple bringing the iPhone to Australia?s Telstra

iPhone may be coming to AustraliaIt looks like our friends “down under” may be blessed with the joys of the Apple iPhone in the near future. Market Watch is reporting that Apple is searching for a wireless partner to pick up the iconic iPhone in the outback. Specifically, Australia’s Telstra has been reported to be testing the iPhone on its network. Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo has confirmed these reports and is looking to bring the iPhone to Telstra’s Next G network next year.

According to Sol Trujillo, Telstra’s Next G network will require a specialized version of the iPhone working on the 850Mhz band. But, if this deal goes through, we could see the iPhone jump from Europe to Australia within a matter of months. We’ll keep you updated, stay tuned.

Could this be Sony Ericsson?s iPhone-fighting UI - the Sony Ericsson Maria?

Sony Ericsson Maria

Everyone’s out to get the iPhone - that much is indisputable. With a clear edge in the UI department, manufacturers are scrambling to take on the full-touchscreen-based interface on the iPhone. Enter Sony Ericsson.

The Sony Ericsson Maria is the rumored iPhone-fighter with a full touchscreen. From what we can see above, the UI is based on a new UIQ OS that is optimized for finger-based touch inputs. Could we possibly be looking at the Sony Ericsson Maria’s UI? We’ll just have to wait and see.

As many faults as the iPhone has, we gotta hand it to Apple for spurring the kind of innovation and development that the mobile space so badly needed. And it’s all about the (cough) touchscreen (cough).

Apple and T-Mobile announce official iPhone rate plans

Our autobahn-cruising friends in Europe just got a bit of good news from Apple and T-Mobile. The duo has released official details on the rate plans that will be available for use with the iPhone when it’s released on November 9.

All three plans, sized from medium to large to extra large (what, no “small?”) will bring unlimited data, Visual Voicemail, and free T-Mobile HotSpot access. That’s right. German iPhone hopefuls can expect free WiFi access at T-Mobile’s 8,000 nationwide HotSpots.

“We?re thrilled to be partnering with T-Mobile and can?t wait to start selling the iPhone in Germany in just a few short weeks,” said Philip Schiller, Apple?s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Starting at just ?49 per month, we think these three rate plans give customers the flexibility to experience all of iPhone?s revolutionary features at affordable and competitive prices.”

Check the chart below for pricing details for the German iPhone on T-Mobile.

Robi targets iPod

Robi targets iPod The Robi device not only endows your iPod with an instant DAB tuner when used, it also doubles up as a remote for the iPod - unfortunately, its wired existence and relatively high price tag of $100 makes the Robi a luxury item. Suitable for those who already own iPods and want to listen to radio as well, but for folks who have yet to pick up a portable media player, why not choose on that comes with a built-in radio instead and save yourself a whole lot of heartache?

Rogers to launch Apple iPhone on December 7th?

Rogers to launch Apple iPhone on December 7th?

Apparently what you just saw is Rogers Wireless’ ad for the iPhone. As you can see for yourself, Apple and Rogers will be rolling out the iPhone (most probably the 8GB model) on December 7th with pre-orders starting on November the 20th. Nothing is still confirmed, but I guess it’s about time to see Canadians getting a piece of the iPhone action. Not that we haven’t seen them crossing the border and unlocking iPhones, but this time it’s about to get official, hassle-free. In addition, the date is just right for both Rogers and Apple to benefit from the Christmas shopping season. Stay tuned…

Apple Limits Two iPhones Per Sale - No Cash Accepted

In one of the weirdest announcements I’ve ever heard, Apple decided that they are no longer taking cash for the purchase of their popular Smartphone, the iPhone… and if you’ve got the credit, you can only buy two of their handsets.

Company officials said they put these restrictions in place in order to thwart resellers and hackers.

“Customer response to the iPhone has been off the charts, and limiting iPhone sales to two per customer helps us ensure that there are enough iPhones for people who are shopping for themselves or buying a gift,” Kerris said. “We’re requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers.”

[There was no word on whether AT&T’s retail stores had also stopped taking cash for iPhones.]

They also said that they suspected that some consumers might purchase the phone in order to

“unlock” it to be able to use it on wireless networks other than AT&T, the sole American wireless company that offers the phone.

According to Apple, they have sold 1.4 million iPhones since the product was launched on June 29, 2007.

Does this announcement put a ding in your holiday shopping plans?

Piaggio releases MP3 scooter

Piaggio releases MP3 scooter No, this MP3 scooter plays no music but comes with three wheels instead in the non-traditional manner - there are two independently suspended front wheels and one located behind, producing sensational handling characteristics to make it the perfect fool-proof learner/commuter bike. This 250cc single-cylinder, injected CVT scooter boasts a maximum speed of over 110kmh which is pretty decent considering the fact that the Piaggio MP3 was designed for city use. Features include a remote button on its key that opens up its underseat storage for helmets and various items and superior fuel economy (something worth considering as the price of fuel doesn't seem to obey the law of gravity and drop, let alone stay put).

iPhone given retro touch

iPhone given retro touch

Mark certainly aims to think different by modifying his iPhone - here's what he has to say about it.

At least I’ve now got a phone which most definately is mine. In the two weeks I used it before this project I never ever got the feeling it was my phone entirely somehow and now I do and that’s what I care about. I wonder why they ever stopped using the slogan ‘Think Different’ cause somehow that’s exactly what I’m (and everyone who owns one of those 250.000 unlocked phones (and counting…)) is doing at the moment, I guess… ^_^

I like the touch on the Apple logo at the bottom - very Newton-ish. To find out how Mark came up with this inspiration of an iPhone, head on here.

Apple no longer taking cash for iPhone purchases, you have got to be kidding me

hundreddollars.jpg

In an attempt to limit the number of people buying an iPhone just to unlock the damn thing, Apple has decided that it will now require a credit or debit card to own one of history’s most over hyped pieces of technology. You can only purchase 2 iPhones per card as well, forget buying one for everyone in your family. I’m completely baffled by this decision. People are no longer able to walk into an Apple store with cold hard American greenbacks and purchase an iPhone. People have commented on Engadget saying that this is legal, but they’re not lawyers so take that with a grain of salt.

How angry are you about this? I’m just shocked at the lengths Steve goes to keep his device out of the hands of people who do not want to play by his rules.

Boynq Wake Up alarm clock charges and plays iPods, FM radio

boynqwakeup_white.jpg

If electronics purveyor Boynq didn't have such a silly name, we would have thought the company brought this Wake Up iPod dock, alarm clock and FM radio straight from the latter half of this century. Instead of just doing ridiculous or annoying things like some of the alarm clocks we've shown you, this one is actually useful and unobtrusive. Of course, it tells you the time of day and the FM station to which you're tuned. Beyond that, this futuristic device also has a convenient place to plug, charge and play the latest iPods, even the iPod touch, on the upper right of this forward design. Click through to the next page to see it in its shiny black color.

boynqwakeup_black.jpg

The Boynq Wake Up also has a small detachable remote that lets you control all its functions from afar. Even though it's compact enough to fit on the nightstand beside you, it cranks out a respectable 20 watts through those diagonally situated speakers you see on the side.

Expected to roll out in Europe in time for the holiday shopping spree, the company didn't announce plans for an American release yet. Nevertheless, this is an unusually attractive iPod accessory that looks to be well worth its $185 price.

iPhone Sales And Acquistions Boost AT&T Profit By 41%

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Shareholders of AT&T stock should be pretty happy about the exclusive release of the Apple iPhone.

The company reported a 41% increase in profit for the third quarter of 2007.

Almost 2 million customers signed up for wireless service, lured by handsets with Internet access. Those users spent more on data services such as text-messaging and video downloads, helping to boost mobile-phone revenue to a record $10.9 billion.

Net income rose to $3.06 billion, or 50 cents a share, from $2.17 billion, or 56 cents, a year ago. The shares outstanding increased after the company bought BellSouth Corp. in December, causing earnings-per-share to fall from a year ago. Sales almost doubled to $30.1 billion.

Cord management cases for iPod users

Cord management cases for iPod users Kena Kai has just released unique cord management cases for iPod Video owners, but only 30GB models will fit these new cases, with 60GB and 80GB versions in the works. In addition, there will also be a variety of such cases that cater to the iPod nano as well, and will come in a wide range of colors on embossed crocodile and ostrich material. With the integrated cord management feature, you no longer need to worry about a tangle of headphone cords in your bag or pocket, allowing you to adjust the length of the cord that you want free to suit whatever situation you're in. Generally, most full-size iPod cases retail for $29.99 while nano cases are a tad cheaper at $24.99. Interestingly enough, purchasing the Pink iPod case will see every single cent being donated to breast cancer research and not just a portion like how other companies do.

Yamaha?s BODiBEAT: Ugly MP3 player that listens to your heart

yamaha_BODiBEAT.jpg

Not one to get by on looks alone, the BODiBEAT by Yamaha chooses the right songs to match the pace of your workout. While you're running or walking, BODiBEAT tracks the metrics of your workout including distance, time, pace and heart rate (using the small heart-rate monitor that clips to your ear).

There are four operating modes: free, fitness, training and music. In free mode, it matches the music to the exercise pace, selecting songs that mirror your tempo. The fitness mode includes settings for walking and jogging, each of which works in conjunction with the heart-rate monitor to select the most appropriate music for aerobic exercise at your fitness level. The training mode tells you when to speed up and slow down for ideal results. In the music mode, BODiBEAT functions as a standard MP3 player.

BODiBEAT lets you specify times, distances or calorie targets to help structure your sessions. When you reach the target, the music automatically stops and the workout is over. BODiBEAT has a paltry 512MB of flash memory, so plan on changing your music often. BODiBEAT will be available later this fall for $300.

Matias Armor Locks your iPhone in its own prison

Have you ever been to one of those homes where all of the living room furniture is wrapped in neatly fitted clear plastic slipcovers? The designer of the Matias iPhone Armor must have grown up in a home like that, because all I see is a beautiful, sleek iPhone locked away in an ugly-ass metal box. At 1.3 ounces, it adds about 30 percent to the weight, plus a little girth to the already not-so-svelte naked device. The current "sale" price of $20 seems reasonable enough, though I'm guessing that Matias will slash that in half in about two months.

iDemocracy - the semi-automatic iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak solution for Windows PC

Monday, October 22, 2007

iDemocracy is the GUI jailbreak for iPhone v1.1.1 on Windows XP and Vista

Why should Mac OS X users get all the fun? The recently released, Cocoa-based iNdependence gives Mac OS X-using iPhone v1.1.1 owners a quick(er) and (relatively) painless GUI jailbreak solution. It’d be nice if Windows PC users had the same convenience of a GUI-based jailbreak solution for the iPhone v1.1.1, wouldn’t it? Well, it would.

Enter iDemocracy. Windows XP and Windows Vista users can now enjoy the benefits of a semi-automatic jailbreak solution. We say “semi-automatic” because iDemocracy still requires a few manual restarts, and a downgrade of the firmware - but seeing as how it handles all the Terminal-command and SSH intricacies, we’d say this “semi-automatic” solution is pretty damn convenient.

Head on over to Google Code to pick up the Windows-based (iDemocracy is programmed in C# and requires Microsoft?s .NET Framework 2.0) iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak GUI solution.

Update: It seems there’s a little bug in the iDemocracy software that results in your iPhone only showing 300MB capacity. Fear not, Windows user, there’s a fix on the way.

iPhone is AT&T Top Seller

[Strategy Analytics reports the iPhone has become AT&T's top selling device comprising 13% of the company's overall handset sales.]

Boston -- The latest Strategy Analytics data from its ProductTRAX program projected that nearly 1.1 million units were delivered to US consumers through the combined AT&T and Apple outlets during Q3, totaling 1.325 million units since the iPhone was launched in late Q2. "The iPhone has become AT&T's top selling device, commanding some 13 percent of AT&T's overall handset sales, and the 4th top selling handset in the US market," according to Barry Gilbert, VP of the Strategy Analytics BuyerTRAX programs.

"Although the iPhone hasn't had an expansionary impact in the market, the iPhone has quickly assumed a leading market share position and raised the ante for smart devices," according to Mr. Gilbert. "The sales trajectory we are observing with the iPhone could make it the top selling device in the US over the next 1-2 quarters."

Currently, the top selling handset in the US continues to be Motorola's RAZR V3, however, this appears to be losing momentum as new and more competitive models that erode both its share and popularity are being introduced. ProductTRAX research notes that the top 10 handset models account for approximately 25 percent of total handset sales in a typical quarter despite an increasing number of device offerings.

"The typical iPhone buyer is upwardly mobile, college educated with a six-figure household income," according to David Kerr, Vice President of the Strategy Analytics Global Wireless Practice. "While the largest percentage of iPhone buyers is between 20-30 years old, the fact that nearly 25 percent were between 50-60 years old demonstrates that the device attracts buyers across a broad age spectrum." Thus far, iPhone users are quite satisfied with phone design and features, however, they are slightly less enamored of actual iPhone reliability, battery life, documentation and customer support.

Aside from the enhanced positioning algorithms, the new version of Navizon adds Buddy Finder functionality, allowing iPhone users to add their friends to Buddy list and then see where they are on a map.

Adding a friend is quite easy, and all it requires is that you enter your and your friend’s email address and take it from there. Audi creates iPhone clone

Friday, October 19, 2007

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Audi metroproject concept was the the iPhone-like device that slots inside the dash. Imaginatively titled the ?Audi mobile device,? it functions as an access authorization system for the vehicle, mobile phone, navigation unit and audio and video player all in one. The menu is modeled on the Audi MMI interface used inside high-spec Audi models.

Equipped with both Wi-Fi and 3G UMTS technology, the Audi phone allows the driver to interface with the car and use the device as a MP3 player or input tool for the nav system. It can even be used to turn on the vehicle?s heating systems before you leave your house, making cold mornings a little more bearable. You won?t have to fumble for your keys in the cold either, as the phone can open and close the car for you.

The touch-sensitive screen is capable of recognizing both Latin and Japanese characters, and is even able to decipher handwriting. As if the device wasn?t already on your wish-list, it can also store images taken by your Audi?s on-board cameras, so your car can snap pics of a would-be intruder and send you a mugshot via the wireless connection. Then it will switch on the car?s tracker to keep you apprised of the car?s location. Yep, it?s a LoJack too.

With an interface obviously stolen derived from the Apple iPhone (check out the cover-flow style album art if you don?t agree with us), the Audi mobile device has just four main softkeys for accessing all the main features. Though it was released as a concept only, we can see carmakers developing such devices in the future as automotive electronics systems keep advancing. Pretty soon, it won?t be the key that lets people know what you drive, it?ll be your phone.

Apple iPhone is 4th top-selling mobile phone in US

Apple iPhone is 4th top selling mobile phone in USThat’s right. Mere months after its initial launch, the Apple iPhone, available exclusively through AT&T, has clawed its way to the top. Accounting for a full 13% of AT&T total handset sales in, the iPhone has secured its position as the nation’s fourth best-selling handset.

MobileTechNews reports that data from Strategy AnalyticsProductTRAX program shows that 1.325 million iPhones have shipped since its launch. The iPhone is the “4th top selling handset in the US market,” according to Barry Gilbert, VP of the Strategy Analytics BuyerTRAX programs.

Strategy Analytics’ David Kerr says that:

While the largest percentage of iPhone buyers is between 20-30 years old, the fact that nearly 25 percent were between 50-60 years old demonstrates that the device attracts buyers across a broad age spectrum

Now, we all knew the iPhone was selling well, but the true test will be if Apple can attain the 1% global marketshare goal that it set for itself. But, even if the current iPhone doesn’t meet Apple’s self-imposed goal, the iPhone brand will undoubtedly continue to perform - the next-gen iPhone may carry the torch well into the future. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Apple To Open Up iPhone Software Development

Steve Jobs has said that Apple is going to open up software development for their Smartphone, the iPhone in February.

“Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February,” Jobs wrote. “We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.”

Jobs said an SDK won’t be released until February “because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once — provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc.”

Jobs said the SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch.

Are you looking forward to the iPhone being opened up for development? What improvements or applications would you like to see?

French law lets customers opt for an unlocked iPhone. The phone will obviously be more expensive than the subsidized version (399 euros), but at least users won’t have to crack it every couple of weeks.

Amusingly enough, the unlocked iPhone is called “Naked iPhone” by Orange, meaning that it comes without a service contract. Orange has declined to mention the price of the unlocked version. French laws require that any phone sold with a service plan should also be made available without the plan.

The people have spoken: Third party applications coming to the iPhone, iPod Touch, officially

iphoneapps.jpgThe mess surrounding the iPhone, more specifically, third party applications that aren't web-based is finally over. Steve Jobs announced today that Apple is working on a software development kit (SDK) for the iPhone and iPod Touch that will be ready by February. Wait, February? It took the renegade iPhone development teams a week after the original June 29 release to begin developing hacked third party applications, but it takes Apple nearly eight months? Apparently so, and Jobs says it is because they have to create the SDK to allow developers the freedom for application creation, while still protecting the phone from viruses and other malicious baddies.

Good news all around — especially for individual developers and more so for larger developers. (Skype, anyone?) It's also good news to watch as this trend slowly grows around other manufacturers of cellphones, MP3 players and mobile operating systems. The potential for third party applications is endless, but only time will tell how robust the SDK will be and what level of third-party applications will be available.

Now how about that pesky locking issue?

Jacuzzi J400 Hot Tub soaks you in style with a built-in iPod docking station

ipod-jacuzzi_12.jpg

That lap of luxury in which you immerse yourself with a nice long Jacuzzi soak now finds itself in the iPod era with the J400 series of Jacuzzi hot tubs, giving you an iPod docking station where you can plug your favorite tunes into its AquaSound Audio System.

This is not just a bathtub, either. Depending on the model of the 400 series you select, it's a hot tub big enough for you and between three and six of your closest friends. There are no headphones required, because the music wafts out of four waterproof micro speakers, all controlled by a floating remote.

If you'd rather just have peace and quiet, you're sure to be comfortable with adjustable pillows you can place in just the right position. There's also sophisticated LED accent lighting placed all around the outside of the hot tub, lighting up its beautiful wooden exterior. The highlight of this stylish spa is its backlit cascading waterfall. We're getting relaxed just thinking about it.

Sony tries to counter the iPhone, still doesn?t get it

Sony tries to counter the iPhone, still doesn’t get it

According to our friends from electronista, Sony and KDDI (a Japanese wireless carrier) are working on a plan to counter the iPhone by the time it reaches Japan in 2008. The plan would be for Sony to allow MP3 file transfer between Walkman phones and non-Sony devices.

First, I don’t know if that is true, as electronista doesn’t provide additional quotes or links. However, if it is true, Sony’s efforts are futile: Apple has a one-two punch with a better hardware/software and a popular distribution platform (iTunes, plus a lot of marketing hype). Sony has little to compete with. So, if the above is the grand plan to stop Apple from flooding Japan with iPhones, it seems… very weak.

Ambrosia Software releases iToner v1.0.3, compatible with iPhone v1.1.1

Ambrosia Software releases iToner v1.0.3 for iPhone v1.1.1Coming back from the dead, Ambrosia Software has revived its popular iToner software to work with the newest iPhone firmware - iPhone v1.1.1. Apple effectively killed the previous version of iToner by effecting file-system changes to the iPhone’s v1.1.1 OS. As you probably already know, iToner allows you to upload custom music ringtones to your iPhone without the need to jailbreak or hack the firmware - without having to pay the per-song iTunes ringtone maker service-fee.

So, if you’ve got some MP3 or AAC files lying around that you’re just dying to get use as ringtones on your iPhone v1.1.1, pick up a copy of iToner v1.0.3 for $15. If you’re the type that constantly changes MP3 ringtones, you might find that a $15 one-time fee for iToner beats Apple’s $1-per-song ringtone service.

Nano radio has parts too small to see, isn?t quite ready for iPod debut

nanotubesk.jpg

Researchers at UC Irvine have designed the first radio using nano-sized parts. Why? Even they didn't have a convincing answer in this interview. Not all the parts in this AM radio are tiny; so far only the demodulator is made out of a carbon nanotube that's 50 microns long. But it's the first step in making a functioning radio so small that it's invisible to the naked eye.

The department of defense is funding the research. We're not exactly sure why the army would need an invisible radio, but we have a feeling Steve Jobs would show interest. Maybe he could tuck one into the next iPod Nano, bringing some authenticity to the gadget's name. Here's a video demonstration of the radio in action.

iTunes offer songs for less than $1

iTunes offer songs for less than $1 The iTunes Store has some pretty good bargains at the moment, offering select DRM-free iTunes Plus songs for a mere $0.99, giving you a savings of $0.30 compared to the current standard price of $1.29. Among the artists involved are Flight of the Conchords and The Perishers. There is no word on whether this price cut is a sign of things to come across the board in order to match the pricing structure that is currently being used at the Amazon MP3 store. Still, now would be a great time to expand your digital music collection (legally) while saving a handsome amount in the process.

16GB iPhone in the works - hoax

16GB iPhone in the works? There's a leaked photo from someone who claims to be an AppleStore employee, and he/she has duly supplied the customary grainy leaked photo of a 16GB iPhone. Currently, there is no way to verify the authenticity of this photo, so this rumor will just have to be taken with a grain of salt until an official announcement is released from Apple. Word has it this updated 16GB iPhone will be released next Tuesday, and if the news is true, how much do you think it will cost?

PS: what about a “leak” with a clear picture for a change? That would be “breaking news”

Update: A reader, _Jon, has told us that this is a hoax – the blurryness was here to hide the photoshop job.

Keep track of your car?s fuel efficiency with the iPhone

Car Performance web app

There’s a new web-based application/service for the iPhone that allows you to keep track of the fuel efficiency of your car. It works quite simple and all it requires is that you start with a full tank of gas and every time you add an entry you should refill the tank. Kinda strange, but I guess it’s the only way to do that with the third party application, which is not connected to the car’s built-in computer system. Anyway, the Car Performance web app is free and you can try it out from here.

Orbit portable MP3 player speaker sounds like beautiful fairies singing lullabies

ORBIT.jpg

Miniature MP3 players are a dime-a-dozen nowadays, but I did a double take upon seeing the Orbit. Why? Because the Orbit is made by Altec Lansing, which is generally known for producing high-quality audio equipment.

Upon further investigation the Orbit is better than the average bear. It includes what Altec Lansing is calling Fusion360 technology that uses the one small speaker to great a 360 degree sound atmosphere. If you must pump your MP3 tunes through a portable speaker, this Altec Lansing Orbit is the cat's pajamas, especially at $40. For the sake of everyone else, just avoid using it in public because no matter the quality of the speaker, your progressive trance is always annoying.

Rumor: iPhone 2 for MacWorld 2008?

Friday, October 12, 2007

Rumor: iPhone 2 for MacWorld 2008?

People just can’t get enough iPhone rumors. Here’s the most recent one: according to smartoffice, Apple is planning an iPhone 2 for MacWorld in San Francisco. It is said that Apple is already talking to manufacturers and contractors about major hardware and software changes/upgrades aimed at non-US markets.

So here’s what we think of this:

1/ Steve jobs confirmed that iPhone 2 was in the works, but that’s like saying “we’ll do something better next time”. Not helpful.

2/ Macworld SF: This seems early to announce an iPhone 2, but “non-US markets” and “major hardware changes” might point to a CDMA device that would work in Japan and on Sprint and Verizon networks. A CDMA iPhone for January would make more sense, schedule-wise.

Handset makers aggressively developing iPhone-like products

Taiwan-based handset makers such as Asustek Computer, BenQ, Compal Communications and Arima Communications are developing iPhone-like products with products from Asustek to be available as soon as the first half of 2008, according to sources.

The new products will adopt the Windows Mobile platform, targeting business markets, and have features such as GPS and 3G.

Apart from Taiwan-based players, international makers such as Nokia, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics are also likely to roll out iPhone-like handsets next year, noted the sources. Samsung's new product will adopt Microsoft or Symbian-based platforms while a Nokia product, which is set to hit the market in the first half of 2008, will be Symbian-based.

HTC Touch handsets, made by Taiwan-based High Tech Computer (HTC) had shipments of 800,000 units in the first three months after launch, according to sources at handset makers.

Nokia and others to launch ?iPhone-like? devices next year?

Nokia and others to launch iPhone-like devices next year?So far we’ve seen few companies, like Intel, BenQ, HTC (Touch) and even Nokia trying to create something similar to the iPhone. And now, according to DigiTimes, more companies are set to enter the race. Apparently, the Taiwan’s “OEM reporting puls” says that we should expect to see more Windows Mobile-based all-touchscreen devices from such companies as Asustek, Compal and Arima Communications next year. In addition, DigiTimes’ sources also claim that Nokia’s controversial touchscreen handset will be released in the first half of 2008…

Now, you may like or hate Apple — it’s your choice. But one thing is certain - they have managed to disturb the whole mobile industry with the iPhone. Can you name some other company that can do that? Ok, maybe Google, but we still wait to hear something official from them.

SHAPE Services acquires iPhone Application List; iPhone web apps market set to explode?

SHAPE Services, the company that is best known as the developer of the IM+ instant messaging software for multiple platforms, has announced that it has acquired iPhoneApplicationList.com, the site that lists iPhone web-based applications and services. The details of the transaction are not disclosed, but somehow we’re sure the folks behind the mentioned website have benefited.

SHAPE Services acquires iPhone Application List

The way I see it, Germany-based SHAPE Services have seen the promising future for the Apple’s handset, hence they’ve decided to jump into the “iPhone ecosystem” before the big boys. Earlier, we saw them releasing Skype for iPhone, the web-based Skype solution, and now — following their latest move — it seems they’re preparing to roll-out more web apps for the iPhone. It’s pure speculation at this stage, but then again it makes perfect sense…

Apple Launches New Directory Of Web Apps For iPhone

In an effort to help popularize the iPhone Safari browser, Apple has launched a new directory that highlights 200 web apps that work in the browser.

The applications are organized in categories such as the most recent viewed, most popular, alphabetical and staff picks. The featured Web software on Thursday was a Facebook application that connects the iPhone to the popular social network in order to visits friends’ pages, upload and share photos, or send and receive messages.

Other software listed as staff picks include a puzzle game called Sudoku, Fandango and MovieTickets.com applications for buying movie tickets, mobile dictionaries of translation for English, French, Spanish and German; and WeatherBug for checking on the local weather anywhere in the world. The directory provides a URL for each of the applications to access the service.

So far Apple has not made it easy for developers to add applications for the iPhone. Whether that will change as time progresses is anybody’s guess.

Apple halts shipments of all iPhones to ensure only iPhone v1.1.1 hits stores

iPhone shipments halted to ensure v1.1.1 firmware installedIn an apparent effort to strangle the supply of iPhones with the v1.0.2 firmware, Apple has halted all iPhone shipments to ensure that all iPhones are shipped to stores with the newest v1.1.1 firmware pre-installed.

The thing is, the iPhone v1.0.2 firmware is last iPhone firmware that is compatible with the free baseband radio unlocking solution. It seems Apple has caught on to the trend of people buying up iPhones with the v1.0.2 firmware in order to unlock them and resell them overseas. So, if you just gotta get an iPhone with the v1.0.2 firmware, you might want to check eBay, seeing as how you’re not going to be getting any from Apple.

But, hey, at least you can jailbreak your v1.1.1 iPhone.

Apple iPhone v1.1.1 Jailbreak solution released to the public - third-party apps on iPhone v1.1.1!

iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreakOf course it has. With the iPhone Dev Team cranking out updates on the iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak solution like there’s no tomorrow, we’re not at all surprised to see a public jailbreak solution so soon. The iPhone Dev Team has published their method to jailbreak your updated iPhone v1.1.1 to gain access to the file system, activate the iPhone, and install/run third-party applications. Keep in mind, the v1.1.1 jailbreak solution is not a simple point-and-click procedure. It’s pretty involved, requires terminal commands, and some SSH-ing. So if you’re not down with getting some dirt under your fingernails, you might just want to sit back and wait for a simple, GUI jailbreak solution.

Make sure your iPhone’s baseband hasn’t been altered before you attempt this method. In other words, unlocked iPhones will still need to wait for a re-locking solution before proceeding with any hacks.

The iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak solution will guide you through the steps:

  • Downgrading to 1.0.2 (if necessary)

  • Preparing the iPhone for a jailbroken update

  • Performing a software update, leaving you with a jailbroken v1.1.1

  • Forcing v1.1.1 to mount read-write so you can access it

  • Installing SSH and BSD world

  • Activating with a Non-ATT SIM

  • Patching SpringBoard to allow third-party applications

  • Clean-up

Keep reading for the full instruction guide.

Jailbreak for iPhone v1.1.1

By NerveGas, Pumpkin, Edgan, drudge, dinopio, asap18

NO THANKS to Niacin: Get some help dude

DISCLAIMER

The iPhone Dev Team disclaims any liability of damage to your iPhone as a

result of following these instructions. While the instructions listed here

are believed to be safe and accurate, there is always a possibility that

your iPhone could be permanently damaged.

WARNING TO UNLOCKERS

The following instructions CAN NOT be used by those who have unlocked

their iPhones. Apple has designed the 1.1.1 upgrade to permanently brick

iPhones that have had their baseband modified to unlock the SIM.

– DO NOT FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU HAVE EVER MODIFIED YOUR BASEBAND –

INTRODUCTION

Jailbreaking iPhone software v1.1.1 is an involved process, but can be

accomplished with the documentation here. The following steps will be

explained in-depth. Please read them thoroughly before proceeding.

0. Downgrading to 1.0.2 (if necessary)

1. Preparing the iPhone for a jailbroken update

2. Performing a software update, leaving you with a jailbroken v1.1.1

3. Forcing v1.1.1 to mount read-write so you can access it

4. Installing SSH and BSD world

5. Activating with a Non-ATT SIM

6. Patching SpringBoard to allow third-party applications

7. Clean-up

STEP 0: DOWNGRADING TO 1.0.2

Certain steps must be run prior to upgrading to v1.1.1. If you have already

upgraded to v1.1.1, follow these steps to downgrade back to v1.0.2.

1. Make sure you have a copy of the v1.0.2 firmware handy. It can be downloaded

here: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3823.20070821.vormd/iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw

2. With the iPhone turned on, hold down the POWER and HOME buttons

simultaneously for ten seconds (until the screen goes dark). Then release

POWER while CONTINUING TO HOLD DOWN HOME for another 15 seconds.

At this stage, the iPhone WILL APPEAR TO BE POWERED DOWN, but it is actually

in a special type of recovery mode allowing software downgrades. If you

see the “Connect to iTunes” icon, you’ve placed the phone into the wrong

recovery mode, and will need to try again.

3. While continuing to hold HOME, launch iTunes. You should be prompted to

restore your iPhone. If your iPhone instead boots up, then you powered it

down instead of putting it into downgrade mode, so give step 2 another try.

Once iTunes is up, you can now release HOME. You will be prompted to

restore your iPhone (if you are not, try step 2 again). Hold down the

OPTION key (or SHIFT if you’re running Windows) and click RESTORE.

You will then be prompted with a file selection window allowing you to

select a firmware file. Select the ‘iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw’

file you downloaded in step 1, and begin the restore.

4. After the restore is complete, you’ll be told that the process failed, and

the iPhone will be in recovery mode. This is normal. Grab a copy of

NullRiver’s Installer.app from http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ and

attempt to install the Installer.app. This will cause your phone to boot

again, however the installation of Installer.app will fail (it’s OK).

5. Congratulations, you’re now back at 1.0.2. You’ll need to get shell access

to move onto the next step. Since you have Installer.app right there,

just run the installer again. This time it should succeed. Now activate.

Drudge has prepared a package called Trip1Prepz, which is designed

for people having to downgrade. It will perform all the necessary

preparations from STEP 1 without needing to set SSH back up, etcetera.

After Installer.app has been installed, go to this URL in Safari:

http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/beta

This will prompt you to add a community source to Installer. Once you’ve

done this, you should see Trip1Prepz listed as a package. BEFORE

INSTALLING IT, connect to iTunes, and ensure that you have an ‘update’ or

‘check for updates’ button. This is important, because once you install

Trip1Prepz, iTunes will no longer give you an option to update, but

only restore.

Once you’re up in iTunes, stay connected and install Trip1Prepz from

Installer.app.

NOW SKIP “STEP 1: PREPARING THE IPHONE FOR A JAILBROKEN UPDATE” COMPLETELY!

Alternatively, if you don’t want to use Trip1Prepz, you’ll need to

get going again with SSH and BSD world. This method will require that you

DO execute the preparation steps in step 1.

To do it this way, use Installer.app and install the “Community Sources”

package. This will add the “OpenSSH” package to the installer manifest.

Now install BSD Subsystem then OpenSSH and you should be able to get back

into your iPhone (root password is dottie). You’ll also want to add

BSD Subsystem. Now move onto the steps below (do not skip them in this case).

STEP 1: PREPARING THE IPHONE FOR A JAILBROKEN UPDATE

NOTE: This step requires you to be at iPhone software v1.0.2. If you are

not, please see STEP 0: DOWNGRATING TO 1.0.2 before proceeding.

Before upgrading to v1.1.1, some preparations must be made. The v1.1.1

update re-jails the iPhone. We’re going to use a little hack which will

keep 1.1.1 from being able to jail once you upgrade.

The way this hack works is this: An “update” in iTunes is unlike a “restore”,

in that the /private/var partition is preserved. The iPhone jails itself

to /private/var/root/Media. We’re going to move Media out of the way and

replace it with a symlink to /. This fools v1.1.1 into jailing to /, which

really is no jail at all. This will allow us to access the root filesystem,

which we’re going to throw into read-write mode later on.

1. Connect the iPhone to iTunes! It is critical that iTunes already

recognize your phone and that you have the “update” button available to you

BEFORE making the changes below. This is because executing the steps below

will otherwise cause iTunes to go into recovery mode, which will NOT WORK

with this jailbreak. Open iTunes, and if you have a “Check for Updates”

button, click it. You will be prompted to upgrade to 1.1.1. Tell iTunes

to “Download Only”; DO NOT click “Download and Install”.

Once you see the “update” button, DONT CLICK IT, but continue to step 2.

2. While still connected to iTunes, SSH into your iPhone while still at

version 1.0.2. If you don’t have SSH set up, see STEP 0’s steps four and

five to install OpenSSH.

Now execute the following commands:

mv /var/root/Media /var/root/Media.old

ln -s / /var/root/Media

Your Media folders should now look like this:

lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 1 Oct 10 12:06 Media -> /

drwxr-x— 7 root wheel 272 Oct 10 10:51 Media.old

If it doesn’t look like this, try again.

3. If you plan on activating later using a Non-AT&T SIM (or without iTunes),

you’ll want to back up your existing copy of the lockdownd binary

(we’ll use these later)…

cp /usr/libexec/lockdownd /var/root/lockdownd.1.0.2

STEP 2: PERFORMING A SOFTWARE UPDATE

Now that you’ve symlinked Media -> /, you are ready to perform an update to

1.1.1. This MUST BE DONE WITH THE UPDATE BUTTON, and NOT the restore button.

The update process preserves your /private/var partition, while the restore

blows it away (which will just re-jail you).

Click the UPDATE button in iTunes, and upgrade to 1.1.1

If you didn’t listen and shut iTunes, you may no longer have an update button.

If this is the case, you’ll need to delete the symlink, put Media back,

start iTunes, then repeat STEP 1 again.

STEP 3: FORCING READ-WRITE MODE

If you’ve followed the steps properly, your iPhone should now be jailbroken, but

not yet writable. To confirm this, shut down iTunes and use iPHUC to connect

to the iPhone. Run ‘ls’ and you should see the root folders (Applications,

System, etc). If you see iTunes_Control, then you’ve botched a step and

will need to start over at STEP 0.

Forcing read-write mode involves overwriting the part of the disk partition that

contains /etc/fstab. This is done by writing to /dev/rdisk0s1. The included

iphuc-jailbreak code supports a command called “putjailbreak” which does this.

After we overwrite the disk, we’ll reboot and the iPhone will be mounted in

read-write!

1. Run iphuc:

Make sure iTunes is closed

killall iTunesHelper

- If you are on OSX/Intel: ./iphuc-jailbreak.osx

- If you are on OSX/PPC: ./iphuc-jailbreak.ppc

- If you are on Windows: ./iphuc-jailbreak.exe

NOTE: If you are using Windows, you’ll need to grab an existing iPHUC

distribution to get all the remaining files

2. You should now be connected to your iPhone. Test this by running ‘ls’, and

make sure you see ‘dev’ among the list of directories. If you see

iTunes_Control, then you haven’t jailbroken properly and will need to start

again from STEP 0.

3. We are now going to overwrite part of the disk partition with our payload

using the 2K file included in this distribution called rdisk0s1.

In iphuc, execute this command:

putjailbreak rdisk0s1 /dev/rdisk0s1

4. The upload should be relatively quick. Once finished, reboot your iPhone.

You’re now in read-write mode, and jail broken! You can test this by

connecting again with iphuc after rebooting and running:

getfile /etc/fstab fstab

Open the file, and you should see the options for / to be ‘rw’ instead of

‘ro’. If you still see ‘ro’, then something’s gone wrong, try repeating

from step three.

STEP 4: INSTALLING SSH AND BSD WORLD

At this stage, you can crack shell on iPhone in the same way that you did

with 1.0.2. If you’re using a Mac, the easiest way is using the iPhone

SSH Installer for Mac, which can be found here:

For Mac:

http://iphone.natetrue.com/iPhone_SSH_Install_for_Mac.zip

1. Just run iPhoneMacSSHInstall.sh in that package and it will walk you through

an automated install of SSH:

sh iPhoneMacSSHInstall.sh

The new root password for v1.1.1 is ‘alpine’, once it’s finished:

ssh -l root iphone

Your SSH keys are likely to change, so if you get any errors about an

incorrect key, you can:

rm -f ~/.ssh/known_hosts

from your desktop’s home directory and try again.

2. Once you’re in, you will also want to install the BSD world. NerveGas has

built a new version of the BSD subsystem that doesn’t require libarmfp.

Download and extract the following files:

http://iphone.natetrue.com/BSD_Base-2.0.tar.gz

http://iphone.natetrue.com/BSD_Extra-2.0.tar.gz

tar -zvxf BSD_Base-2.0.tar.gz

tar -zvxf BSD_Extra-2.0.tar.gz

Change into each of these directories and run:

cd BSD_Base

scp -r * root@[IPHONE IP]:/

cd ../BSD_Extra

scp -r * root@[IPHONE IP]:/

For Windows:

1. Follow the instructions here:

http://cre.ations.net/blog/post/howto-install-ssh-on-your-iphone

NOTE: If you download Nate True’s iPhone SSH kit you will need to

grab iphoneinterface.exe from his latest iBrickr release to

actually make it work.

STEP 5: ACTIVATING WITH A NON-AT&T SIM

If you’re using an AT&T SIM that will activate through iTunes, skip this

step and just activate through iTunes.

To activate with a non-AT&T SIM, we’ll need to copy over that lockdownd

binary and activation certification we backed up when we were on v1.0.2

and do a little hackery, then copy the v1.1.1 lockdownd back when we’re done.

NOTE: In order for afc to start, you must BOOT the phone with

lockdownd v1.1.1, so do not reboot the phone during this process. If

you have no choice, copy lockdownd v1.1.1 back after, then reboot

again to make sure afc comes up.

1. Back up v1.1.1’s lockdownd:

cp /usr/libexec/lockdownd /var/root/lockdownd.1.1.1

Now overwrite the iPhone’s copy with your old v1.0.2 copy:

cp /var/root/lockdownd.1.0.2 /usr/libexec/lockdownd

And upload the certificate included in this distribution:

scp iPhoneActivation.pem root@[IPHONE IP]:/System/Library/Lockdown/

Now:

killall lockdownd

This will restart lockdownd with v1.0.2’s version

2. Download iASign from http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/IASign

bunzip2 iASign-v0.2.tar.bz2

tar -xf iASign-v0.2.tar

cd iASign/bin

Overwrite iASign’s iPhoneActivation.pem with the one provided in this package

cp /path/to/1.1.1-jailbreak/iPhoneActivation.pem /path/to/iASign/bin/

Now run: ./iASign.mac –automatic iPhoneActivation_private.pem

After a while, it should complete and say “New State: Activated”, but it

doesn’t really work. Don’t worry, we’re almost there!

3. Now copy the v1.1.1 lockdownd back and restart it:

cp /var/root/lockdownd.1.1.1 /usr/libexec/lockdownd

killall lockdownd

4. Run iAsign once more:

./iASign.mac –automatic iPhoneActivation_private.pem

It should look like this:

Activating…

InvalidActivationRecord

New State: Unactivated

Don’t let iAsign fool you, the phone is now activated.

STEP 6: PATCHING SPRINGBOARD

The new version of SpringBoard has been hard-coded to allow only factory

applications to run. We’ve coded up a patcher that will fix this “bug”,

and back up your original SpringBoard app.

1. Upload the springpatch binary included with this distribution:

scp springpatch root@[IPHONE IP]:/usr/bin

Then low into your iPhone and run it:

$ springpatch

SpringBoard Patcher for iPhone v1.1.1

Brought to you by the iPhone Dev Team

Successfully patched /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/SpringBoard

Original backed up to:

/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/SpringBoard.original.

Please reboot your iPhone or kill springboard for changes to take effect.

If it exits successfully, you can now restart SpringBoard to enable third

party applications:

killall SpringBoard

2. You will need to list at least one application in:

/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/M68AP.plist

This is the new “DisplayOrder.plist”. The application MUST be placed just

before the MobileStore application. The reason for this is that MobileStore

is placed at the end of the Springboard to specifically hide other

applications. Adding at least one application appears to break free from

this.

For example, if you have installed NES.app, your M68AP.plist will be modified

to look like:

<dict>

<key>displayIdentifier</key>

<string>com.natetrue.iphone.nesapp</string>

</dict>

<dict>

<key>displayIdentifier</key>

<string>com.apple.MobileStore</string>

</dict>

STEP 7: CLEAN UP

You’ve now successfully jailbroken your iPhone and set up shop. Congratulations!

Before you can sync, you will need to remove the symlink you created:

rm /var/root/Media

mv /var/root/Media.old /var/root/Media

That’s it!

iPhoneSimfree announces updated software unlock solution for iPhone v1.1.1

iPhoneSIMfree iPhone SIM unlock solution for v1.1.1 firmwareThings are happening real fast in the world of the iPhone. Hot on the heels of the new iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak solution from the iPhone Dev Team, iPhoneSIMfree has announced the newest version of the iPhone unlocking software. With the iPhone v1.1.1 firmware now successfully jailbroken, the new iPhoneSIMfree software unlock update is now iPhone v1.1.1 compatible and is even claimed to reverse any iBricked iPhones. iPhoneSIMfree is inviting all current customer to upgrade to the iPhoneSIMfree v1.1.1 release

Our sincere congratulations, to the iPhone/ iTouch Dev Team for their brilliant work in finding an ingenious way to jailbreak the 1.1.1 system. This exciting news means we are now able to gladly welcome all SIMFREE unlocked phone owners to UPGRADE to 1.1.1 if they so wish

Further to this, we are very proud to announce, (after some very difficult and lengthy hardware hackery), we were able to retrieve the necessary info to create the world first 1.1.1 unlock solution. We have now tested SimFree v1.6 with phones that have the new Baseband version 04.01.13_G with full success. This now means that SimFree v1.6 release, is now capable of completely restoring/repairing software unlocked “bricked” iPhone. Those of you wishing to repair your phone, please read the following steps.

So, if you’ve wandered into the unfortunate land of unlocked-iPhone-updating and ended up with a iBrick, you may want to head on over to iPhoneSIMfree’s website. We haven’t had a chance to try out this new unlock software, but if they’re charging $60-$100 (from third-party vendors) for this solution, it probably works. Oh, and if you just bought a brand-new iPhone and want to unlock it for non-AT&T use, give it a go with iPhoneSIMfree.

Apple iPhone announcement coming soon? Offline support for third-party web-apps?

Apple to announce iPhone development newsWord on the street has it that Apple is going to drop another iPhone-bomb on us soon. Sources indicate that Apple will be giving the iPhone’s third-party development community a much needed boost in morale and accessibility.

We’re not sure if the announcement is going to be the rumored offline storage support for third-party web-apps or a full-fledged Apple-sanctioned iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK). Either would be good news for third-party apps on the iPhone, but a legit iPhone SDK would allow for more powerful software to be developed for the iPhone - no web-app programming limitations means more flexibility and power.

We recently found that Apple built a multi-page function into the SpringBoard homescreen application - which makes room for a host of new application icons, so it wouldn’t be a complete surprise if Apple decided to actually release an iPhone SDK. But, we all know how Steve Jobs likes to have complete control over the entire user experience, and a full iPhone SDK would allow developers to crank out iPhone applications faster than you can say “Hot damn!” - we’re not sure Stevie would be willing to let the development community run away with his precious iPhone. Still, Apple could give iPhone web-app developers the ability to create applications icons on the iPhone homescreen in addition to offline storage support - that would explain the extra room Apple made on the iPhone homescreen.

Either way, we can’t wait for Apple to drop the bomb on us. Hopefully sometime this week (as in the next couple days?). Stay tuned.

Apple launches iPhone web-app portal - find all iPhone web-apps through Apple?s catalogue

Well, it looks like Apple is starting to seriously embrace the whole third-party web-app development community for the iPhone. While a full iPhone SDK announcement may still be a few days away (”may” being the operative word here), Apple has launched their third-party iPhone web-app catalogue. The new web portal consolidates all the best web-apps that have been developed so far in an easy-to-use, categorized layout.

Now we just have to wait and see what Apple has in store for us with that rumored announcement regarding iPhone application development. With the launch of this web-app portal, we will most likely see offline storage support for third-party web-apps. That seems to be the best compromise from Steve Jobs’s perspective - he doesn’t give up control of iPhone development while still appeasing iPhone fans demanding more applications. Still, a full-fledged iPhone SDK would be sweet.

iPhone cannot count more than eight

Thursday, October 11, 2007

iPhone cannot count more than eight
The iPhone has yet another quirk - you cannot automatically sync more than eight ringtones. To do that, you'll need to select the actual ringtones in iTunes, and set the iPhone to manually sync those ringtones instead. Guess it failed math in first grade and needs to be guided for numbers larger than eight. Seriously though, there isn't any plausible reason for this handicap to appear other than the devious fact that Apple's contracts with AT&T or the record companies has affected its counting ability. How many ringtones do you think is ideal for a cellphone?

Swisscom To Service iPhone In Switzerland

Reports have it that Swisscom will be selected as the telecom company to service the Apple iPhone in Switzerland.

“Like every telecommunications operator, we are very interested in iPhone,” CEO of Swisscom Karsten Schloter said. “It is the first mobile phone that fully utilizes the Internet.”

He said that mobile data traffic in Switzerland has a huge catch-up potential compared with fixed line Internet, with high prices and lower functionality weighing on its use by consumers.

No word on when the iPhone will be released there, just that Swisscom is looking to service the Smartphone.

Apple iPhone Web apps directory

Apple iPhone Web apps directory

Apple has revealed that it will be launching a directory of official Web 2.0-based iPhone applications, after word leaked out concerning Apple representatives who have been tracking down authors of Web-based iPhone apps and asking them to submit official screenshots, icons, web addresses and descriptions of their applications to Cupertino. Apple has apparently held these developers to an oath of secrecy while taking the hush-hush but tried route of having developers submit their Dashboard widgets to Apple's very own Dashboard downloads directory. Guess third party application development is still frowned upon by Apple as they do not want their iPhone platform to end up as unstable due to a deluge of third party apps (because nobody else can make stable software.. hum). Apple, what about making it easier for people to uninstall software and reset the phone to it's default state?

Apple iPhone v1.1.1 Jailbreak solution may be released later today!

Apple iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreakThat’s right! The iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak hack has gone from iPhone-dream to iPhone-reality. Just days ago we reported on initial successes in accessing the iPhone’s file-system, and now a fully working jailbreak solution is imminent. The new jailbreak solution will run most third-party applications and will even work with the Nullriver Installer.app that made native application installation such a breeze in v1.0.2.

iPhone Atlas is reporting that a simplified, end-user jailbreak could be available as soon as today. For now, Engadget’s Ryan Block has confirmed that the iPhone Dev Team’s iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak beta is live and functional. The current iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak works by exploiting a security hole in iPhone Safari by which a corrupt TIFF image allows root access. And, like we said before, a simple update from Apple will most assuredly close this security hole - rendering the current jailbreak useless.

Unfortunately, SummerBoard will not work with the new jailbreak method - Apple changed the way the iPhone deals with the SpringBoard homescreen icon manager. But, that’s not all bad. Apple actually built-in a multi-page homescreen feature that will be enabled with the v1.1.1 jailbreak - so there isn’t even a real need for SummerBoard anyway. Once Installer.app is optimized for the v1.1.1 jailbreak, we’ll be making the jump to the new firmware. WiFi iTunes Music Store, here we come!

Unless Apple offers something truly unique and worthy of another update, the iPhone v1.1.1 may be the end of the line for third-party application-loving iPhone users. Better kick up your game, Apple. Like we said before, we’re not updating for anything less than iChat or video capture.

Brandos 2GB Chocolate MP3 player is cheap, possibly chocolatey

Cute, light and cheap — that's what we like in an MP3 player, and this "Chocolate" one certainly qualifies. Available from Brando, the USB Chocolate MP3 player has 2GB for your tunes, room for about 300 MP3 or WMA songs. With that capacity, featherweight heft (about half an ounce), and no screen, it's reminiscent of the iPod Shuffle — but is half the price at $39. That even includes a neck strap and USB cable. And packaging, we presume.

USBChocolateMP3_2.jpg

That just leaves the mystery of why it's called the Chocolate MP3 player. LG's Chocolate product line aside, the player doesn't look much like a candy bar, and it has those weird animal and person icons on the front (a little clearer in the gallery below), so it's a bit of a stretch. They should have called it the animal-cracker player (mmm… animal crackers). Or the "two dudes surfing with a rooster and a dog" player. On second thought, guys, you probably made the right choice.

USB Chocolate MP3 Player

The USB Chocolate MP3 Player from Brando is one highly portable player, weighing a mere 12 grams - so make sure you know where you've kept it in your pocket lest you forget it is there and lose it accidentally, whether to the washing machine or having it dropped out without your knowledge. There is no LCD display, so chances are you'll have to make do with random song playback. It measures 3cm x 4.3cm x 1cm and supports both MP3 and WMA audio formats. I have absolutely no idea what the symbols on the buttons mean - is there some sort of dog walking mode on this thing? And what does the word "Chocolate" have to do with describing this MP3 player? The 2GB model will retail for $39.00.

Apple iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak gets real with third-party apps

Apple iPhone Jailbreak on v1.1.1 update firmwareIt feels like just this morning that the iPhone Dev Team announced that they had made some preliminary breakthrough’s in the the iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak method. Wait, it was just this morning! Those guys sure work fast, it was only hours ago that the iPhone Dev Team hacked their way into the iPhone’s v1.1.1 file-system. At this point the iPhone v1.1.1 firmware is jailbroken, with third-party applications ported and working. The SpringBoard can only hold 15 application icons total, but at least the apps are installed and working.

We’re hoping to have a working solution released to the public sometime soon. With the ability to run third-party applications, the iPhone v1.1.1 firmware and the WiFi iTunes Music Store is starting to look a bit more attractive. And it’d be nice to get a speaker volume boost too.

But, the next iPhone update (v1.1.2?) will most definitely kill the current jailbreak method. And that’s a good thing - here’s why. With third-party applications working on the v1.1.1 firmware, Apple had better step up its game and offer some seriously appealing new features with the next update. We’re damn sure not making the jump to v1.1.2 for anything less than video capture, MMS, or iChat.

Kudos, iPhone Dev Team! We’re all grateful for the incredible work. Way to keep Apple on their toes.

The eternal battle rages on, and this time iPhone hacker asap18 has successfully managed to port a number of third party applications to the iPhone and having them appear properly in the home screen. At point of publishing, only 15 icons can be added in this manner, with the last spot apparently being exclusive for iTunes. Not only that, asap18 has also tracked down an option for international capabilities in SprinBoard that could potentially bear fruit to foreign language Application support. This would come in handy in countries where the iPhone will debut soon, such as Germany and France. Do take note that your unlocked iPhone might end up bricked when you upgrade to the latest 1.1.1 firmware.

Apple Sued Over ?Bricked? iPhones

In yet another dispute in the customer relations department, Apple is the plaintiff in a class action lawsuit for making unlocked iPhones inoperable. The lawsuit was filed by Timothy Smith and lawyers M. Van Smith and Damian R. Fernandez of San Jose.

The lawsuit is based in part on the fact that ‘Apple issued a software update that “bricked” or otherwise caused iPhone malfunctions for consumers who unlocked their phones and installed the update.

‘Under an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act 1998, consumers can lawfully modify their phones for use on a cellphone network of their choice. Apple ignored the exemption in disregard of consumers’ rights.’

The lawyers set up a website urging other iPhone users that were affected by the update to join in on the suit. Currently, only residents of California may join in. Interested parties can find out more by visiting appleiphonelawsuit.com

California man files class action lawsuit against Apple over bricking of unlocked iPhones

Apple class action lawsuitThink the slew of class action lawsuits against Apple are coming to an end? Think again. The latest lawsuit to hit the Cupertino, CA. company comes from Apple’s home-state of California. Timothy Smith filed the class action lawsuit in San Jose (just a stone’s throw away from Apple’s headquarters, by the way) last Friday. In the suit, Smith accuses Apple of breaking anti-trust regulations and purposefully bricking unlocked iPhones.

As is the case with most class-action lawsuits, Smith is asking for unspecified monetary compensation in addition to Apple being barred from selling locked iPhones and requiring them to extend warranty support to owners of unlocked iPhones. The class-action filing complained that “Apple forced plaintiff and the class members to pay substantially more for the iPhone and cell phone service than they would have paid in a competitive marketplace either for the iPhone or for AT&T’s cell phone service.”

According to an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, owners of mobile phones have a right to unlock the device for personal use. Apple’s move to brick unlocked iPhones with the v1.1.1 firmware update was a violation of consumer rights. “Apple acted in defiance and without sufficient consideration of consumers’ rights to unlock their iPhones because it knew that the probable result of its update would be to render unlocked iPhones inoperable,” reads the suit.

If you want to get in on this class-action lawsuit (warning: PDF link), head on over to appleiphonelawsuit.com to see if you qualify to be part of this class-action. If you’ve paid a termination fee to your previous carrier in order to use the iPhone, have had your unlocked iPhone bricked by the v1.1.1 update, or lost all your third-party applications due to the update, you qualify to reap the rewards of Smith’s class-action suit.

Bring on the litigation, people. The more class-action lawsuits there are out there, the better the odds of all us iPhone owners getting a piece of the pie. Albeit a small piece.

Apple iPhone v1.1.1 SpringBoard hacked to display multiple pages

Wow, the iPhone Dev Team has really been cranking out the jailbreak developments over the past couple days. It was just yesterday morning that the Team made some preliminary breakthroughs in accessing the iPhone v1.1.1’s file-system. Then, last night, the iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak process got another bump-up with third-party applications ported and working - although the SpringBoard homescreen application launcher was limited to 15 application icons.

That brings us to this morning. The iPhone Dev Team is now another step closer to a publicly available jailbreak solution - Nicholas “Drudge” Penree, NerveGas and Pumpkin were able to patch SpringBoard to support as many third-party applications as you want. In doing so, the SpringBoard on iPhone v1.1.1 now displays multiple pages.

So, now all we gotta do is wait on the iPhone Dev Team to release a general jailbreak solution with third-party apps and the cool multi-page SpringBoard feature. We’re behind these guys all the way. Bring on the iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak!

Canadian luxury retailer Holt Renfrew to start selling iPhones next year?

Canadian luxury retailer Holt Renfrew to sell iPhones next year?

While this rumor is at early stages, somehow it does make sense for Apple to use an additional channel beside the carrier’s stores for iPhone’s distribution. So, we may see Apple partnering with a GSM carrier in Canada, but also with a retail chain to reach as many buyers as possible — after all, they did a similar deal for the UK market. According to Engadget, there are some clues it might be the country’s “luxury retailer” Holt Renfrew. The story goes further to suggest they will start selling the iPhone starting from January next year, even though it was originally planned for this fall.

Whatever the case is, I’m sure Apple will find its fans in Canada as soon as they enter the market with the iPhone. In the meantime, our Canadian readers can always pick some of the iPhones with the earlier firmware if that’s what they want…

iPhone Dev Team announces initial iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak hack

iPhone v1.1.1 update jailbreak hack preliminaries

That’s right, the iPhone v1.1.1 isn’t as secure as we once thought - you know, a whole week ago. With the iPhone v1.1.1 update having killed all our favorite third-party updates in return for the WiFi iTunes Music Store and a louder speaker volume, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the iPhone developer community’s response to the newly locked-down firmware. But we never thought that the iPhone Dev Team would have a preliminary v1.1.1 jailbreak hack already in the works. The iPhone Dev Team has announced that they’ve made the initial steps into a truly workable iPhone v1.1.1 jailbreak hack. As it stands, the iPhone Dev Team’s v1.1.1 jailbreak method reveals that :

  • Third party applications may still be viable with a little recoding for the new frameworks.

  • Springboard no longer recognizes DisplayOrder.plist. The order of Apple’s OEM iPhone apps cannot be changed anymore - they are hard-coded into Springboard.

  • The iPhone can been activated via third-party workarounds.

  • The 1.1.1 binaries barely work with 1.0.2. WiFi iTunes Music Store might work on v1.0.2 with some hacking.

  • The Mobile Terminal App works on 1.1.1.

  • Command line works.

  • The v1.1.1 firmware references both com.apple.mobile.radio and com.apple.mobile.nike.

But, the v1.1.1 jailbreak is still in its infancy and the iPhone Dev Team still needs more time to produce a working commercial solution. Those of you hesitant to take the plunge to v1.1.1 and give up all those third-party apps might have a good reason to apply the update in the near future. At least a better reason than the WiFi iTunes Music Store.

Hey! Hurry Up With The iPhone Tips And Tricks And Help Me Work This Thing!

Saturday, October 06, 2007

When describing the iPhone tips and tricks, one of the best techniques involves how to make the ringer on the iPhone louder. This is considered important because one of the most common complaints about the iPhone is that the ringer volume is much too low. If you are one of the many people who considers this a problem, then there are iPhone tips and tricks you can implement to do something about it.

You can easily resolve this volume issue by using a custom ringtone rather than fussing with those that are available on the device. Make certain that the ringtone you choose is a loud, high frequency audio tone.

Another great tip involves how you watch Google videos on your iPhone, and the process described here is also incredibly easy. Since the original iPhone's Safari browser did not support Flash, Apple was obligated to write a new application for the device which would allow streaming video.

Ultimately, you can find various YouTube videos that give you step by step directions on the trick that is required to view Google videos right from your iPhone.

Another one of the best iPhone tips and tricks involves the streaming of audio from your iPhone and directly to your Bluetooth headset. This is also an important issue because many people were very displeased when they learned that Bluetooth's A2DP profile was not included as an option in the iPhone feature list. To use Bluetooth, the device must be compatible with other certain types of Bluetooth profiles.

To achieve this action, you will need to pair together a Bluetooth headset with your iPhone. Switch on the headset so that it can perform the "handshake" with the iPhone, Access the Visual Voicemail screen, and tap the Audio button in the upper right hand corner. Then you will receive an audio selection dialog, from there select the Headset option, switch over to the iPhone and begin playing your music or video.

There are other really good iPhone tips and tricks that you can use, all of which are great because they allow you to receive more out of your iPhone device.

The Numbers Are Large

There are about 110 million active iPod/MP3 users world wide. Did you know the average iTunes member down loads a minimum of 300 songs and 20 movies a year. That's $500 a year on just down loads. Apple reportedly considering Intel platform for iPhone

Apple reportedly is considering adopting Intel's Moorestown MID (mobile Internet device) platform processor in a new iPhone, according to OEM sources.

Intel revealed a Moorestown-based MID product with functions similar to Apple's iPhone at the recent Intel Developer Forum (IDF) San Francisco. The Moorestown platform is expected to launch in 2009 and Apple is considering developing an iPhone based on it, stated the sources.

Some channel vendors think that if Apple adopts Intel's platform in its iPhone, it will reposition the MID market place and affect both notebook and handset markets.

The most annoying thing I found about the iPhone is the lack of proper Bluetooth support

As a Nokia handset and N800 Internet Tablet owner I was one of those who were looking forward to see iPhone replacing the two devices. However, that wasn’t the case as iPhone lacks the proper Bluetooth support…

iPhone with Bluetooth keyboard

Yeah, the iPhone misses the 3G and a GPS, but we KNEW it won’t be there. However, we did know Apple will include Bluetooth connectivity support with the iPhone. But — there’s always a “but” — we did NOT know the Bluetooth support will be so much crippled. Yeah, I DO want the stereo Bluetooth (A2DP profile) and an option to connect my full QWERTY keyboard to the device with such a large screen. In addition, I may want to connect external stereo Bluetooth speakers to the iPhone. And while stereo Bluetooth IS possible, it requires that you plug an additional accessory into the device — iPhone should have all this on-board!

The good thing is that Apple can actually fix this with its future firmware upgrades. I just hope they will do that sooner rather than later. C’mon Steve, you’ve nothing to lose with this move. Ok, maybe potential Apple stereo headset sales (not that we know they’re coming), but what do you expect us to do in the meantime. “Wire ourselves” after we got used to stereo Bluetooth? Will “please” help? ;)

Christmas Without iPhones In France?

French laws might make it impossible to launch the iPhone in France in time for the Christmas holiday.

The law states that the mobile phone is to be sold both the with and without cellular contracts, which is in conflict with the marketing plan to offer the phone solely through Orange Telecom.

So if you have an iPhone on your Christmas list and you live in France, you might want to come up with a Plan B, just in case the law postpones the iPhone’s sale in your area.

Move over iPhone, here comes the Voyager

Wednesday, October 03, 2007

voyager.jpg

I'm not really sure Apple will be quaking in its boots, but Verizon is hoping to steal a little thunder from the iPhone with LG's Voyager phone. The biggest advantage? It has faster Web access than the phone from Cupertino. The Voyager also has a traditional keypad hidden under a hinged panel that also features a second screen. Other highlights include a 2-megapixel camera, and a slot for 8 gigabytes of extra memory. Unfortunately, Verizon is going the same route as AT&T, by making the Voyager a Verizon only phone.

"We think it'll be the best phone… this year. It will kill the iPhone," Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Mike Lanman said in an interview.

Really? The Voyager is expected to launch in November for a price between $100 and $400. The phone is going to have to be pretty darn great if it is going to claim the prize as best phone of the year when it only has one month to convince subscribers.

Verizon unveils iPhone rival

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Verizon Wireless unveiled three new cell phones on Wednesday for the holiday season, including a high-end handset named Voyager that will compete with Apple Inc's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile , Research) iPhone.

The Voyager, made by LG Electronics (066570.KS: Quote, Profile , Research), trumps the iPhone by offering faster wireless Web access. But in a nod to the Apple device, which is only available to AT&T Inc (T.N: Quote, Profile , Research) subscribers, it has a large touch screen and full Web browser.

Verizon Wireless hopes the new phone will attract customers put off by the iPhone's lack of a traditional keypad -- the Voyager hinges open to reveal a small computer keypad and a second screen.

"We think it'll be the best phone ... this year. It will kill the iPhone," Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Mike Lanman said in an interview.

Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart said the Voyager may attract existing Verizon subscribers who do not want to switch service providers, but he doubted it would hurt iPhone sales.

"People who want a high-end media phone and want to stay with Verizon will certainly give that one a hard look. I don't know that it would pull anybody away from an iPhone," he said.

The battle for cell phone buyers' hearts this holiday shopping season is shaping up to be even fiercer than usual, as rivals to Apple and AT&T launch new challengers.

Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N: Quote, Profile , Research) and Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L: Quote, Profile , Research), has not been first with the hippest phones, but said this line-up is its best yet.

"Typically a carrier brings one, maybe two exciting products to the market in a year. We're bringing four," Lanman said, referring to the three new models and its existing LG Chocolate phone.

Verizon also introduced Juke, an ultra-narrow phone that comes in three colors and is shaped like a chocolate bar. The phone, made by Samsung Electronics (005930.KS: Quote, Profile , Research), is less than 1 inch wide.

It also unveiled another LG phone, the Venus, which comes in black and pink, and has a phone keypad that slides out from under a touch screen. As with Voyager, it vibrates when a user taps a menu option on the screen.

Verizon Wireless would not give exact pricing beyond saying each phone would target a different segment and range from under $100 to about $400. The iPhone costs $399.

Greengart at Current Analysis said the new Verizon range is a step forward for a company that has been trumped before by AT&T, which sold Motorola Inc's (MOT.N: Quote, Profile , Research) Razr long before Verizon did.

"This is something Verizon had to do," Greengart said. "It's been a long time coming for them to get hotter devices."

Venus and Voyager both have 2-megapixel cameras, and high-speed wireless connections for fast music and video downloads, and a slot for 8 gigabytes of extra memory. The iPhone has 8 gigabytes of built-in storage.

Venus and Voyager will launch before the end of November

The cheapest phone in the range is the Juke, which is narrower than any U.S. phone so far and will go on sale on October 19, Lanman said.

The Juke slides open to reveal a tiny keypad and comes in dark blue, red and teal. It has dedicated keys for playing music but does not have a high-speed wireless link.

Verizon Wireless said it expects to attract more fashion-conscious young users to Juke than those who want to constantly e-mail or Web-surf on cell phones.

Nokia Touts Its Open Platform As Antidote To Apple?s iPhone

The world's largest cell phone vendor has launched an advertisting counterattack against Apple, which has dissed some of its most loyal customers by "bricking" unlocked iPhones or those loaded up with third-party apps. (Interestingly, few of the Apple uber-faithful are angry, judging by the many responses to our original post, where commenters are of the opinion that it's your own darn fault if your iPhone got bricked.)

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is touting its Nseries phones -- like the elegant N95 -- in a flash ad entitled "Open to anything" that's posted on its Web site.

The ad is designed to emphasize the ability of Nokia's Symbian-based platform to accept outside apps. Nokia is taking direct aim at Apple's "closed" approach, touting how it's inviting users to do pretty much anything they want with Nokia's Finnish phones.

"Open to creativity, Open to discovery," scroll the titles on the site, until it hits on the final tagline, "Open to anything." Then this copy appears:

"We believe the best devices have no limits. That's why we've left the Nokia Nseries open. Open to applications. Open to widgets. Open to anything. So go ahead and load it up. What it does is up to you."

Nokia touts the openness of its Symbian-based platform in a Web ad aimed at Apple.

Denizens of Apple's own iPhone forum have engaged in several discussions comparing Nokia's phone to Apple. Interestingly, many iPhone users don't seem be down on Nokia, they just prefer the iPhone. The biggest rap on the N95 seems to be that it's heavier than the iPhone.

One of the lengthiest threads isn't on the phone per se, but rather on carrier reception. The performance of AT&T (NYSE: T), which is the sole domestic iPhone carrier, is heavily debated. Many posters aren't happy with the reception they're getting, but then who ever is, regardless of the phone or service provider?

Apple looking towards Intel chips for next-gen iPhone - Intel Inside iPhone 2.0

Apple considering Intel Moorestown for next-gen iPhoneCould the next Apple iPhone bear the famous “Intel Inside” sticker that tells everyone that your packing some serious Santa Clara heat? Well, given Apple’s preference for minimalist design and clean lines in their sexy-fied products, it’s not likely that any Apple device will be sporting an “Intel Inside” sticker, much less the iPhone. But, according to DigiTimes, the Cupertino-based iPhone maker is considering a move to Intel’s Moorestown MID (mobile internet device) processor.

Remember Intel’s iPhone Clone? Yea, well it looks like the Moorestown processor that powered that trick piece of hardware piqued Apple’s interest. The Intel Moorestown platform is slated to launch in 2009 and we’re hearing that Apple might be ditching Samsung’s ARM-based chipsets for the new hotness from Intel. More power is always a good thing, and Intel claims that Moorestown will bring serious computing power while keeping power consumption at “ultra-low” levels.

An Intel-powered Apple iPhone with GPS and 3G? It’s nice to day-dream, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. We’re going to be keeping a close eye on this one, folks.

Rock My Teeth with an iPod

Rock My Teeth with an iPod

Mike Williams' new "Rock My Teeth" system requires an iPod to work its wonder of stripping your coffee-stained teeth of their dirt, resulting in pearly whites after prolonged use. You first need to attach peroxide-loaded whitening strips to both top and bottom teeth (they're self-adhesive and dissolving so no worries about having plastic left over in your mouth after each treatment), followed by placing a custom mouthpiece between your teeth and hooking it up to an iPod (or other music source for that matter). Crank up the volume and see the magic work - it uses bone conduction of your jawbone to enhance the whitening process in a quick and painless manner. According to Williams, these strips will make you half a dozen shades whiter within a week. Definitely not something to be used in public but in the innermost recesses of your home. The entire kit retails for $50 and includes a mouthpiece, cable, and 50 of the whitening strips.

Verizon Wireless Voyager Phone To Compete With iPhone

Verizon Wireless is a formidable competitor in the wireless business, so it should come as no surprise to learn that they’re introducing what they hope will be an “iPhone killer.” The Verizon Wireless Voyager is made by LG Electronics and boasts a few features that outdo the iPhone, notably faster data access speeds.

Verizon Wireless hopes the new phone will attract customers put off by the iPhone’s lack of a traditional keypad — the Voyager hinges open to reveal a small computer keypad and a second screen.

“We think it’ll be the best phone … this year. It will kill the iPhone,” Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Mike Lanman said in an interview.

Mobile industry analysts are not as convinced that the new Voyager phone will pull people away from iPhone. Avi Greengart, of Current Analysis, said the Voyager may attract existing Verizon subscribers who do not want to switch service providers, but he doubted it would hurt iPhone sales.

“People who want a high-end media phone and want to stay with Verizon will certainly give that one a hard look. I don’t know that it would pull anybody away from an iPhone,” he said.

As with all new phone launches, only time will tell. Customers are a mysterious and fickle bunch when it comes to determining which phone will be a hit.

Vodafone wants to carry the 3G iPhone?

VodafoneFile this “way to early to talk about it,” but apparently the Big Red is looking forward to the iPhone 2 which reportedly should come with a built-in 3G radio. According to Vodafone’s CEO, they will “absolutely” negotiate with Apple to carry their handset as soon as Jobs&Co make it 3G enabled.

Somehow, I don’t buy this. The main problem was in lack of control by the carrier, not the built-in hardware. Vodafone and other major carriers don’t like the whole iPhone idea where Apple gets piece of the profits, plus the control over the customer’s experience. In addition, Vodafone has invested tons of money to make its own music store, which would directly compete with Apple’s iTunes. On the other hand, this may happen if Apple proves it can actually bring additional cash to its carrier-partners. iPhone is coming to UK next month, can’t wait to see the first figures…

Apple Slapped With Lawsuit For Dropping The Price On iPhones

Apple should have figured that not everyone was going to be pleased with Apple’s decision to drop the price of an 8 gig iPhone and defunct the smaller 4 gig iPhone.

Dongmei Li of Queens, N.Y is seeking 1 million dollars in damages for price discrimination laws after the company made the decision to drop the 8 gig mobile phones price by $200.00.

According to Li’s lawsuit, filed on Sept. 24 in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York, the price reduction injured early purchasers like herself because they cannot resell the product for the same profit as those who bought the cell phone following the price cut.

Li purchased a 4GB iPhone for $499 and alleged that owners of the 4GB model were given less favorable terms than those who bought the 8GB model at the premium price, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit also named AT&T Inc., the exclusive carrier in the U.S. for the iPhone, and alleged the two companies’ required two-year service contract for the iPhone constituted unfair business practices.

Apple declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing company policy not to comment on pending litigations.

Do you think that Dongmei Li has a case?

Lady sues Apple over iPhone price cut

Lady sues Apple over iPhone price cut

Dongmei Li from New York has sued Apple Inc., seeking a cool million in damages after the company knocked down the iPhone's price by $200. She claims that Apple has violated price discrimination laws when it announced the price cut within a couple of months of the sleek handset's debut in June. Needless to say, no Apple spokesperson has issued a comment in line with the company's policy not to discuss pending litigation. Do you think this lady will get the windfall she's seeking for? Chances are higher that Kim Jong-il will give up his nukes instead in my books. After all, should she win this case it will set a precedent for millions of other disgruntled iPhone owners who suffered from the drastic price cut so soon after the iPhone's release.

Nokia ad campaign touts open N-Series platform in wake of iPhone update controversy

Take a look at the images below, they’re advertising bills posted in New York City. Do they sound like they’re alluding to something more than the Nokia N-Series phones being customizable? Well, they should. Nokia’s launched their “Open to anything” ad-campaign in response to Apple’s recent iPhone update v1.1.1. As you’ll remember, the update basically locked-down the iPhone to factory status and killed all third-party applications - closing down the OS.

Nokia makes fun of iPhone

Hey, Steve! You might do well to take a page out of Nokia’s playbook. You’ve already got the sexiest phone on the market, but looks alone will only take you so far. Nokia is touting their N-Series phones as being “Open to anything,” and that “The best devices have no limits” (other than the speed limit of the anemic processors - sorry, couldn’t resist). We agree.

Sure, multi-touch is badass. Yes, the iPhone is a beautiful piece of kit. But, if you sit on your high-horse and keep this all this sexiness locked-down, you might just find that the more homely devices with more features and flexibility will be the ones serving you a slice of humble pie. You listening, Stevie? Get the hell off that damn horse and give your customers what they want.

We love the iPhone, that much is clear. Don’t make us have to switch to the N95, just on principle alone.

Apple iPhone Extreme in the works?

Could Apple indeed be working on an iPhone Extreme? Well, Tom over at iPhoneBugList spotted a reference to an “iPhone Extreme” in Apple’s iPhone feedback form. All we know at this point is that there’s some hidden code that hints at a product that goes by the name, “iPhone Extreme.”

iPhone Extreme code pops up on Apple website

Could this be a reference to the next-gen iPhone with 3G and GPS in tow (iPhone v2.0)? We know Apple’s naming-scheme already makes use of the “Extreme” moniker to indicate a higher-end product, so a higher-end iPhone successor is a good fit for the “Extreme” title. And, how far away is such a rumored device? Why would Apple start referencing such a device if it didn’t expect to launch the product in the near-term? Could this just be a typo? Suffice it to say that we have more questions than answers - and that the possibility of an Apple iPhone Extreme is nothing more than a whisper of a rumor at this point.

We’ll keep an eye on how this develops. Stay tuned!

Apple?s iPhone is the best thing to happen to the American smartphone industry

iphone.jpg

Before the iPhone it was considered ridiculous for the mainstream American consumer to purchase a cellphone for more than $100 or $200. Operators would provide heavy subsides on devices with the catch that you had to remain a subscriber for at least 2 years. The iPhone changed all that. It became acceptable to shell out over half a grand (now only $400 vs $600 initially) for a device that could play music, videos, browse the internet, send and receive text messages and phone calls.

Then one day the iPhone was hacked and America’s most popular feature phone became America’s most popular smartphone. Applications could be installed, functionality could be added, your iPhone became more than an iPod connected to the cellular network. Your iPhone became a computer that was always connected and always in your pocket.

Recently Apple updated the iPhone’s firmware and those users who once enjoyed applications that let them play Nintendo games, chat with their friends over IM, upload images straight to Flickr, were now confronted with a dead device. Punished for exploring their curiosity, punished for thinking differently, the company who once stood for creating technology that enhanced your life turned into the company that wanted to control the end user experience.

Gizmodo recently came to the realization that the iPhone isn’t the holiest of holy devices, something I’ve been saying since before the damn thing came out, and I’m glad that the backlash is starting to happen. If there was ever a time for cellphone manufactures and operators to innovate in the states, than this is it. With Sprint saying their WiMAX network will be used for non subsided hardware and Nokia printing ads in the Times proclaiming how free their devics are, who will be the creator of a new device that gets as much hype as the iPhone did, yet deliver more to the consumer than the iPhone ever could?

The iPhone really is the best thing to ever happen to the American smartphone industry. Expect to see S60, Windows Mobile and Palm steal the best ideas Apple developed, compounded with the philosophy that users want to expand their devices functionality, and unleash a wave of devices that are easier to use and sexier than ever imagined.

How to downgrade your iPhone

How to downgrade your iPhone
Very rarely will you find instructions to downgrade a device, but there are now instructions floating around the Internet, allowing you to downgrade the iPhone from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2. That won't result in downgrading your baseband, and hence that means you won't be able to re-unlock an iPhone which has already been upgraded to 1.1.1, but then again it is still 1.0.2 where third party applications are concerned. Currently, iPhone Dev Team is trying to find a way to downgrade the new firmware, allowing people to unlock their phones again. Well, if you're an AT&T user, there basically isn't anything to worry about as you did not irk Cupertino's wrath by dealing with this shady unlocking business.

You can get all your favorite third-party, natively installed iPhone applications back in working order by downgrading your firmware to v1.0.2!

Whether you bought a brand-new iPhone v1.1.1 or updated your iPhone recently, you can use this method to “down-date” your iPhone to the previously third-party application-compatible version. Oh, and if you want to unlock your brand-new iPhone with the v1.1.1 software installed, you can just perform this downgrade to v1.0.2 and unlock accordingly - of course, you won’t be able to update back to v1.1.1 until you re-lock your iPhone (the iPhone Dev Team solution is on the way).

Here’s one method to downgrade your iPhone to v1.0.2, head on over to the iPhone Dev Wiki for more details on how to perform this downgrade.

  2. Download the 1.0.2 iPhone restore file if you don’t have it already.

  3. Shift + Click Restore (Windows) or Option + Click Restore (Mac), then point to the file below (use .dmg file in download file).

  4. Use AppTap Installer you will be back to normal with EDGE and Wi-Fi support.
