To download a free video to your iPod using iTunes, please follow these steps:

1. Search on Google Video and select the video you'd like to download. Please note, videos from YouTube are not available for download at this time.
2. Select "Video iPod/Sony PSP" from the drop-down menu to the right of the video and click the "Download" button. If these options don't appear, the video in question isn't available for download.
3. Save the video to a location on your computer.
4. Connect your iPod to your computer and open the Apple iTunes application.
5. In iTunes, select "File" > "Add File to Library." Browse for the video you downloaded, then click "Open."
6. Select the "Movies" tab.
7. Check the "Sync movies" box.
8. Click "Apply."

A patent application from Apple reveals that an automatic volume control feature would let the device decide what sound volume is safe enough to avoid hearing loss. From the patent:

The iPhone (or iPod Touch) as an internet tablet - it’s almost perfectly suited for surfing through your favorite online forums, shopping sites, and, ahem, TMZ.com. There’s just one thing missing. If only there was a way to download all that cool web-content straight to your iPhone.

Well, now there is! iPhone hacker hachu has gone ahead and developed a plug-in for your iPhone’s Safari browser. The plug-in allows you to download (rather than stream/playback), say, an MP3 file to the var/root/Downloads directory on your iPhone’s local disk. You can find instructions for installing the plug-in here. After installation, whenever you click on a link to any media (like a ZIP file), a green “Download” button will appear. There’s a bit of .plist editing required, so if that kind of “hacking” makes you break out in cold-sweats, you might want to stay away from this one.

Anyway, Erica Sadun from TUAW has modified her SendFile application to allow you to playback said MP3 files from your iPhone’s local-disk (even while offline). SendFile will now search your ~/Downloads and ~/Media/Documents directories for any media that you might want to send, share, email, and now playback. Grab the modified SendFile application here.

We’ve seen our share of iPhone-advertisement spoofs. Some are funny, some are just lame. But, this one really stands out. Turns out that O2’s claims of the iPhone being the fastest selling device in the carrier’s history wasn’t all marketing-talk. O2’s head honcho recently paid his Jobs-ness a visit in Cupertino, California to presumably give each other their “high-fives” over how well the iPhone is doing in the UK. Despite reports of slow-sales, O2’s Matthew Key told Steve Jobs that O2 should move around 200,000 iPhones by the end of January (we should note that other reports indicate that iPhones have been selling very well).

More importantly (especially for O2), Key told Jobs that the iPhone has spurred incredibly high data-usage rates on the UK network. With 60% of iPhone users clocking more than 25MB of data per month, O2’s data revenue has gone through the roof (compared with 1.8% of O2’s general subscriber base using 25MB of data every month).

With data-revenue the key money-source from O2’s iPhone customers, it’s pretty much a lock that O2 will be picking up the 3G iPhone when it launches next year.

There’s no lack of third-party gaming applications for the iPhone as it is - we have NES games, card games, puzzle games, and so on - and now we have PlayStation games. As expected, the psx4iPhone application has just been released through Installer.app, basically turning your iPhone into a PSP with touchscreen controls!

The developer, zodtt, had previously kept their iPhone PlayStation emulator private - only accessible through a paid-beta program. Well, now us lay-folk can have at it. Fire up your Installer.app and find psx4iPhone. Install the emulator and you’re ready to start installing PlayStation ROM’s!

Install the SSH client that is freely available through Installer.app and transfer (via SFTP - CyberDuck works great on Macs) your PS ROMs to the iPhone. Find your iPhone’s IP address by viewing the details of the WiFi connection (hit the little arrow to the right of the connection name). SFTP to your iPhone’s IP address and upload the ROM to the /var/root/Media/ROMs/PSX directory. That’s it, you’ll be up and running in no time.

We have a feeling that a good number of productive hours are going to be spent playing PlayStation games on our iPhone. Oh well.

Future versions of the iPod could turn down the volume if listeners play their music at full blast for too long.

It is the first time that the company has explicitly expressed fears over the risk the device poses to hearing.

Experts believe that millions of young people are risking irreversible hearing damage because of the craze for MP3 players.

The iPod, like other digital music players, can store enough music to play for several days and has batteries that can last for more than 12 hours at a time.

As a result, its owners can keep their earphones in all day, risking cumulative damage to their hearing.

A new patent reveals that the next iPods and iPhones could automatically calculate how long a person has been listening, and at what volume, before gradually reducing the sound level.

It states: "Since the damaging effects on users' hearing is both gradual and cumulative, even those users who are concerned about hearing loss may not behave in a manner that would limit or minimise such damaging effects."

Currently, iPods can reach volumes of more than 100 decibels (dB) - equivalent to standing 10ft from a pneumatic drill.

At that volume, experts claim there is a risk of hearing damage after just 15 minutes. Some MP3 players can exceed 120dB.

The device will also calculate the amount of "quiet time" between when the iPod is turned off and when it is restarted, allowing the volume to be increased again to a safe level.

However, it is unclear whether iPod owners will be able to switch off this automatic volume control.

The move by Apple to introduce hearing protection to iPods comes after heavy criticism by hearing charities who have expressed concerns about the risk posed by MP3 players.

In April, Apple revealed that it had sold more than 100 million iPods worldwide and it was expecting, by the end of this year, to have sold more than 4.5 million iPhones - which also function as music players - including 200,000 in Britain.

A recent report by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf estimated that more than four million young people in Britain are at risk of hearing damage from listening to loud music, and called on MP3 manufacturers to introduce warnings and volume limits.

It found that nearly 20 per cent of teenagers were listening to music for more than 21 hours a week.

Its "Don't Lose the Music" campaign also recommends using noise-cancelling headphones to avoid turning up the volume to drown out background noise.

Listening to volumes below 70dB is considered safe, but prolonged exposure to �volumes higher than 85dB can lead to hearing loss and tinnitus.

Many MP3 players in Europe have had volume levels capped at 100dB after authorities in France ordered a clampdown.

Apple said it did not comment on patent applications.

Emma Harrison, head of campaigns at the RNID, said: "Apple's patent application makes it clear that personal audio players can damage hearing.

"If the next-generation iPods do what the patent claims, it could help to protect the hearing of millions of its customers."

Well, if 9to5mac is on point with this latest speculation, then Apple is poised to announce that they’ve pushed 5 million iPhone handsets onto the smartphone market. We’re looking for Steve Jobs to announce the blistering sales numbers during his keynote at MacWorld Expo on January 15th.

The iPhone just recently broke through the 1 million-handset market, and with European iPhone sales shrouded in doubt (some reports indicate incredible sales, others paint a much dimmer picture), we find it hard to believe that Apple is already halfway to their 10 million-handset end-of-2008 goal. Still, we could be wrong, and the iPhone could deliver another giant blow to Windows Mobile’s market. We’ll know if� a few weeks time…

Yes folks, the iPhone like scrolling of your contacts is possible on Sony Ericsson Symbian UIQ3 based smartphones. As you can see from the image on the left and much better from the short demo video after the jump, the application is quite neat and easy to use. Insiders tell us that Apple expects to announce sales of roughly five million iPhones at Macworld 2008 in January. Of these, around one million are expected to come from Europe. Apple is seeing very strong Christmas sales despite AT&T's announcement that a 3G iPhone will be hitting in 2008 (May-June is our best guess at this point) that could've hampered demand.

Apple sold 1 million iPhones in 74 days around the same time it dropped the price to $399 from $599. Also, Apple opened in Europe's three biggest markets in November - just in time for the holidays.

Some sources expect Apple to release a 16Gb iPhone upgrade at Macworld in mid January, however, no hard evidence to this effect has hit our ears.

Apple had originally expected to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 and reaching the halfway point this early is likely to bolster Apple's stock price. Apple's iPhone is a leader in the smartphone charge in the US and has gained marketshare at an unprecedented pace.

But DoCoMo isn’t the only operator that Apple is talking to. Softbank Corp, the third largest operator in Japan, is also part of the talks, which is logical, if Apple wants to negotiate the best deal for their royalties.

Now it’s quasi-certain that the Japanese iPhone will launch in 2008, but two questions remain: which carrier? Will it be the upcoming 3G iPhone?

We previously reported that the largest wireless operator in Japan has been in talks with Apple to bring the coveted iPhone to the island-nation’s NTT DoCoMo network. Well, today we get confirmation straight from NTT DoCoMo that Apple is indeed working with the Japanese network to bring those edgy-Japs a bit of minimalist-style.

“It is true that Mr. Steve Jobs of Apple Inc. and our president (Masao) Nakamura held a meeting,” an NTT DoCoMo spokesman said in a statement to the Agence France-Presse,. Unfortunately, NTT DoCoMo wasn’t all that forthcoming with information regarding the timing of the iPhone’s Japanese debut or even what Apple and NTT DoCoMo were talking about.

Now, we are also hearing that Apple is in talks with another Japanese network operator, presumably to hedge their bets and make sure the iPhone makes it to Japan one way or another. Softbank Corp., Japans No. 3 carrier, has been rumored to have made business trips to Cupertino to discuss the iPhone exclusivity deals. Apple could be working both sides of the Japanese market to make sure they can land the revenue-sharing deal that’s turned the whole manufacturer-carrier model on its head.

We’re not going to expect a Japanese iPhone launch before the middle of next year, perhaps in line with the Asian launch that we’re looking for in China. Ears to the ground, folks. Ears to the ground.

Apple has filed a patent to protect an ipod speaker dock that is reminiscent of the Apple Hi-Fi. Among the improvements, there is a control display, possibly to play video files – or may be the the Boombox has its own memory and can play as a stand-alone device (speculation is free and you can tell). This patent does not mean that Apple will produce such a device, however.

We got flamed by some for saying it in our Hi-Fi review, but the facts speak for themselves: the Apple Hi-Fi was not a successful product, that’s why it got quietly canned, in our opinion.

Apple Inc. may be close to the most important test yet of its iPhone's global appeal.

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs recently met with officials from Japan's dominant mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo Inc., including NTT's president, Masao Nakamura, to discuss a deal to offer the iPhone in the country, say people familiar with the situation. These people say Apple has also been talking to Japan's No. 3 operator, Softbank Corp. Executives from both NTT and Softbank have also made multiple trips to Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters.

In Japan, one of the world's largest and most demanding mobile-phone markets, Apple will face ferocious competition from other handset makers. Indeed, it will be joining a long list of foreign phone makers that have tried to break into the insular Japanese handset market, most with little success. It also remains to be seen whether a top Japanese carrier will accept Apple's unusually tight control over the design of the iPhone.

Representatives at Apple, DoCoMo and Softbank declined to comment.

Success in Japan is crucial if Apple is to keep up the momentum of a product that has sold well but not quite as well as some Wall Street analysts initially forecast. Since its launch in late June, the iPhone has been one of the top-selling smart phones in the U.S., where it is sold through AT&T Inc., the nation's largest carrier based on number of subscribers. More recently, the product went on sale with carrier partners in the U.K., France and Germany, where Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster believes its sales have been "good, but not over-the-top good."

Reaching agreement with a wireless partner in Japan soon is an important step toward Apple's oft-stated goal of gaining 1% of the global cellphone business by the end of 2008. That would mean it would have to ship some 10 million iPhones, a goal Mr. Munster and many other analysts now believe Apple will exceed. Through late September, Apple says, it sold a total of 1.4 million iPhones. Mr. Munster predicts that 15% of iPhone sales next year could come from Japan, placing that country behind only the U.S. and the U.K.

Japan, the world's second-largest economy after the U.S., is an attractive market for Apple. The company has long had a strong brand there through its Macintosh computers and iPod products. It also has seven retail stores there -- one of its largest presences overseas -- including a flagship store in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district that is often jammed with gadget lovers.

What's more, Japan's nearly 100 million mobile-phone users buy new phones every two years on average. And Japanese consumers are already used to shelling out hundreds of dollars for expensive phones with advanced features such as digital TV, music and a camera.

Apple has said it will launch the iPhone in Asia sometime next year. The iPhone that Apple will ship in Japan is likely to be a new version that supports "3G" networks, which provide far faster Internet surfing speeds. Analysts expect that device to be available by the middle of next year. The current iPhone wouldn't work in Japan, where older networks are based on a different technology standard than the rest of the world.

Still, Japan will be a difficult market for Apple to crack. More than 10 domestic mobile-phone makers work closely with the three major operators there to develop phones that cater to Japanese consumers' tastes. While the market share of foreign manufacturers has been rising slowly, they make up only about 10% of Japan's annual phone sales of about 45 million to 50 million units, according to Yano Research Institute. Sharp Corp. was Japan's dominant mobile manufacturer with a 26.2% market share in the April-to-September period, according to Japanese market research firm MM Research Institute.

And though Apple's iPod music devices are popular in Japan, they have faced competition. Sony Corp. has made a small dent in Apple's share with its Walkman music players, as have Japanese mobile-phone makers, which equip their models with sophisticated iTunes-like music features. Many Japanese consumers already purchase and download music over their current mobile phones.

Apple has nearly 50% of Japan's digital music-player market, according to industry data, but that's smaller than the roughly 70% share it has in the U.S. In the Japanese market, where each mobile operator refreshes its lineup twice a year with the latest phone models, packing them with advanced technology and features, the Apple iPhone will have to keep pace.

Still, Yasumasa Goda, a telecom analyst at Merrill Lynch & Co., says Apple could do quite well in Japan. "Apple and iPod are already established brands in Japan, so they're starting from a different place than other foreign manufacturers," he says.

Richard Doherty, an analyst at the electronics research firm Envisioneering Group in Seaford, N.Y., says he saw excitement about the iPhone in Japan firsthand in October. He was attending a technology conference and was mobbed by executives from electronics and wireless companies who wanted to see his Apple phone. "It attracted crowds everywhere," he says.

In Japan, Softbank has been widely believed to be interested in partnering with Apple. But people familiar with the matter say DoCoMo is likely to be Apple's first choice because of the strong preference the U.S. company has shown so far for signing agreements with top mobile operators.

The two sides are still negotiating terms, these people say. One sticking point is the share of subscriber revenue that Apple is demanding. People familiar with the situation say Apple is asking for a percentage of revenue that is comparable with what it receives from other carriers. Some analyst estimates put that figure between 10% and 20%. If it can't reach a deal with DoCoMo, Apple may turn to Softbank, which has been making an aggressive push to take customers away from its larger rivals. A person familiar with the situation says Apple doesn't expect to have any difficulty concluding a deal with a Japanese operator.

In an effort to grab hearts and minds of the iPhone owners and to get some press attention along the way, Intuit has announced they will be launching web-based version of its popular personal finance application Quicken specially tailored to fit the screen of the Apple’s handset. If everything goes according to the plan, iPhone and iPod Touch users will be able to manage their personal finances while on the go. The software company will offering the new service for as little as $3 a month, which is a bargain considering how much you can save if you use it wisely.

Naturally, the iPhone version will lack some of the functionalities desktop version provides to the users, but Intuit wows the application/service will remain useful. Now, it would be nice if they could also optimize their web app for other devices running Windows Mobile and Symbian mobile operating systems…

If you’ve been looking for a smart way to organize your budget and spending, look no further than your iPhone. Intuit recently announced that they are offering Quicken for iPhones for $3.00 a month.

The program will be widely available on January 8, 2008. They are hoping to appeal to younger users that aren’t using an accounting program to track expenditures.

The program’s functionality will be similar to what is available on the entry level version in Intuit’s Quicken line. That would give users the ability to do things such as balance their checkbooks, review spending patterns and track cash flow.

Quicken’s desktop software already allows users to download banking information, credit card charges and electronic bills. The new online product will be able to do that, but will be easier to set up, he said.

It will automatically download new information as those companies make it available. In the case of credit card charges, transaction details will be pushed out to Quicken online users as they are accrued, rather than requiring customers to wait until the end of the month to see all charges for the period, he added.

Look for this program coming soon from Intuit.

It looks like all that pioneering in the world of native iPhone applications hasn’t gone unnoticed by the higher-ups at Cupertino. Delicious Monster’s Lucas Newman, developer of the first-ever native iPhone application Lights Off, has been tapped by Apple to join their iPhone SDK development team.

The iPhone SDK, as you should well know by now, is due out in February 2008, and to make sure that the release is timely and fully-developed, Apple is looking to bring on some true talent. What better recruiting pool than the group of iPhone hackers that managed to get native applications ported to the iPhone without the aid of an SDK? If you can fly a plan blind, you can surely fly with full instrumentation and clear visibility, right?

Kudos to Lucas Newman for the new, glitzy job. Make us proud!

You would think that the head-honcho of one of the US’s premier technology rags is fairly proficient with the latest gadgets and doo-hickeys. Especially those gadgets that he actually uses everyday. You would think that, and you’d be wrong. Kevin Allison, of the Financial Times, has reported that, “Chris Anderson, the editor-in-chief of Wired, the US technology magazine, has revealed he was hit with $2,100 in charges for using his iPhone on a recent foreign trip, thanks to a glitch that led him to be charged each time the mobile handset automatically refreshed his e-mail inbox.”

So, here’s another case of a roaming iPhone causing a major, multi-thousand-dollar headache for a faithful AT&T customer. Or is it? It’s widely known that you should disable data-roaming on your iPhone when traveling abroad to ensure that just this type of data roaming charge does not occur - or at least subscribe to a global roaming plan. Further, Mr. Anderson was even contacted by AT&T customer service to advise him to be careful when using his iPhone in China, as it might lead to costly roaming data charges. Funny, we can’t recall any reports of AT&T calling any non-technical writers to warn them of costly roaming charges.

But, the ridiculousness doesn’t stop there. Wired’s top-editor had to specifically call AT&T in order to enable his iPhone for roaming use in China, so he can’t even argue that he didn’t know about roaming issues with the iPhone.� “He said the bulk of the charges were due to the fact that his iPhone was set to check his e-mail account for new messages every 10 minutes. The Wired editor said that he receives ‘hundreds’ of e-mails every day. ‘This is a phone that I wasn?t using,’ Mr Anderson said. ‘I was simply walking around with the phone in my pocket,’” according to Allison. Right, you weren’t using it, but it was set to automatically check your email. It’s hard to pinpoint who is more dim-witted here - Anderson or Allison.

So, is this another case of AT&T being incredibly callous and overcharging their loyal customers? Or is this a case of a possibly-staged story with skewed facts - FUD?

The iPhone isn’t exactly an enterprise device, that much is truth. But, that doesn’t stop throngs of businesspeople from insisting that their IT department support their new-fangled iPhone.

Support for the year’s hottest handset is expected to come in Q1 2008, and will essentially turn your iPhone into another endpoint on the corporate network - by “endpoint on the corporate network” we mean that the all calls to the office phone will be routed to the iPhone when you’re out of the office.

There doesn’t seem to be any shortage of official consumer-electronics rank-lists that are putting the iPhone near, or at the top, of the page this holiday shopping season. Time Magazine named the iPhone the “Invention of the Year” and the No. 1 gadget in their “Top 10 Gadgets” list. The iPhone has taken the top-spot in usability studies. It’s the most popular Google search term.� And now, Consumer Reports has just released their latest issue that puts the iPhone ahead of rival BlackBerry.

Consumer Reports scored the Apple iPhone at 64, compared to the RIM BlackBerry Curve’s 61 points. Notably, the iPhone’s longer talktime (8.25 on the iPhone, 6.25 on the BlackBerry Curve), superior UI, ease of use, and simple computer synchronization gave it the edge against the BlackBerry curve. The BlackBerry’s push-email prowess was even unseated by Consumer Reports - citing the iPhone’s strong email client as a winner over the BlackBerry Curve.

RIM is something of an industry incumbent when it comes to smartphones, they’ve been doing the whole “email” and “smartphone” thing for quite some time. So, it’s surprising (and refreshing) to see that the newcomer Apple has unseated the traditionally stronger RIM with their first-ever phone-offering. The iPhone is definitely a strong contender in multiple markets, we can’t wait for the next-gen iPhone to take it to the next level.

On the outside, Apple Inc.?s iPod touch looks a lot like its iPhone. On the inside, there?s a strong resemblance too?but a dissection conducted by iSuppli Corp.?s Teardown Analysis service reveals the touch sports a distinct design and unique advancements compared to the iPhone.

The 8Gbyte version of the iPod touch carries a Bill of Materials (BoM) cost of $149.18, according to iSuppli, based on pricing in October. The BoM has decreased somewhat since October due to declines in pricing for memory semiconductors and other components in the iPod touch, with the cost falling to the $147 level during the intervening period.

When adding the iPod touch?s direct-conversion cost of $5.86?consisting of manufacturing, assembly and test expenses?to the $149.18 BoM, the total cost is $155.04.

The 8Gbyte version of the iPod touch sells for $299. Apple?s iPods traditionally have been sold at retail pricing that is about twice the level of their hardware BOM and manufacturing costs, based on iSuppli?s extensive teardown analysis of devices in the product line. The iPod touch is no exception, with its price nearly double its materials and manufacturing cost, at 92.9 percent higher.

iSuppli?s estimate of the iPod touch?s costs is strictly limited to expenses for components and other materials and manufacturing. The estimate does not include costs for software, intellectual property, accessories and packaging. The BOM figure also does not include research and development costs, because such data cannot be derived from a teardown and component analysis.

The attached table presents iSuppli?s estimate of the iPod touch?s BoM and manufacturing costs.



An iPhone minus the phone?

Functionally, the Apple iPod touch is an iPhone minus several features, including cell-phone capability, Bluetooth and certain software elements. Otherwise, the core features of the iPhone user experience are all present in the iPod touch, including orientation sensing, web surfing via Wi-Fi and the product?s signature feature: a 3.5-inch diagonal touch screen with multi-touch sensing. These advanced features place the iPod touch right at the top of Apple?s iPod line.

?The iPod touch likely represents the future of the high end of the iPod line,? said Andrew Rassweiler, teardown services manager and principal analyst for iSuppli. ?Click Wheel-interface and Hard-Disk Drive (HDD)-based versions of the iPod are expected to wane in favor of touch-screen and flash-memory-equipped models like the iPod touch. But despite its functional and physical outward resemblance to the iPhone, and the fact that its internals borrow heavily from the iPhone, the iPod touch is no iPhone clone, and has its own unique design.?


Family resemblance

Rassweiler estimated the iPod touch and iPhone designs have a 90 percent commonality in terms of components. For example, the key Integrated Circuit (IC) at the core of both the iPod touch and iPhone is Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.?s video/applications processor, a chip based on an ARM microprocessor core and employing stacked on-package memory. Costing $13.19 based on iSuppli?s October estimate, the Samsung processor accounts for 8.5 percent of the iPod touch?s total cost.

Another common part between the two products is a power-management IC from NXP Semiconductors Netherlands B.V., costing $2.61 and accounting for 1.7 percent of the iPod touch?s cost in October.


Design departure

However, the iPod touch?s design differs from the iPhone in that it is uniquely optimized to meet its form-factor and cost requirements. To cut space usage, the iPod touch makes use of some advanced packaging for its components not seen in the iPhone, including 0201 diodes and passive components in 01005 enclosures on the touch?s WLAN module.

?This is the first time iSuppli has seen these components in a product we?ve torn down,? Rassweiler said. ?Apple products always seem to push the envelope in terms of space savings, and therefore we often first see the newest, most-compact components in Apple products.?

The iPod touch design also pushes the envelope in terms of memory density. The high-end version of the product includes 16Gbytes of NAND flash memory, more than any product in the Apple iPod line. In contrast, the high-end iPhone offers only 8Gbytes of NAND flash.

Another notable difference is in the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design. The iPod touch employs a single PCB as opposed to the iPhone?s modular two-PCB design.

Other differences between the touch and the iPhone include a new set of components to support the iPod touch?s Wireless LAN (WLAN) functions and the location of the touch-screen circuitry on the main PCB?rather than on the touch-screen module.


Production outlook

Based on the history of the various Apple iPod products, iSuppli has assumed a total lifetime of one year for the first-generation iPod touch. iSuppli estimates that if Apple follows its historic product pattern, it will manufacture about 8.5 million first-generation iPod touches during the approximately one-year period from the third quarter of 2007 through the beginning of the third quarter of 2008. At that time, iSuppli expects the first-generation touch will be replaced by a new product in the third quarter of 2008.

However, this forecast could be impacted if Apple chooses to replace the iPod touch sooner to coincide with the introduction of a new model of the iPhone. Furthermore, if the product lifetime extends to two years, production could increase to as much as 20 million units. The arrival of the flash-memory-based touch will have major implications for the rest of Apple?s iPod line, iSuppli believes.

?The touch, along with the nano, may drive Apple?s HDD-based iPods close to extinction in the near future,? said Chris Crotty, senior analyst, consumer electronics, for iSuppli. ?While not a dollar-for-byte match for HDDs, flash now offers sufficient capacity that many consumers are willing to trade off storage for advanced displays and features.?

File this under “we’ll wait and see,” but it seems Jobs&Co are in Japan negotiating with the leading carrier in the second-largest economy - NTT DoCoMo. According to the Wall Street Journal Asia, Steve has met with DoCoMo’s president, Masao Nakamur, and is currently pushing him to accept the revenue sharing deal. The story goes on suggesting The Steve is also in talks with Softbank in an unlikely case (according to WSJ) DoCoMo pulls out. We’ll see how this goes and whether Japanese can say no to Steve’s pitch…

iPod 5G, nano 3G and classic iPod owners can now play Sonic the Hedgehog on their favorite music player. The iPod game has been converted from the SEGA Genesis version and will bring back great memories to many of us.

The iTunes download costs $5 and we even heard that the controls were not that bad, using the iPod wheel as a controller.

Here’s a little update to our previous report (from iPhone Atlas) that iPhones unlocked by France’s Orange may still be locked to carriers within French borders. iLounge has gotten word from Orange spokesperson Louis-Michel Aymard. We’re going to go with the official claim and believe that unlocked iPhones are truly unlocked for use on any network around the world.

Orange clarified the unlocking issue by stating that ?Once legally (through Orange Customer Service) unlocked, the iPhone will operate with any SIM card, including foreign ones. But some applications like ?Visual Voice Mail? may not work abroad.”

It’s basically what an unlocked iPhones should be - fully functional as a phone and� internet-tablet on any network around the globe, without a functioning Visual Voicemail feature.

Software unlocking solutions for iPhones with firmware v1.1.2 and above are resistant to software unlocking efforts. The iPhoneDevTeam has released the source code for their AnySIM software unlocking solution in hopes of getting a fresh perspective on circumventing software-based obstacles to unlocking iPhone v1.1.2 firwmares.

So, what’s an eager-beaver iPhone-hopeful on a non-Apple-sanctioned network to do? While software solutions are out of the question, there are SIM-based unlocking methods available. For example, you can use the SonicSIM and StealthSIM unlocking solution to make your iPhone compatible with that “foreign” wireless network.

The SonicSIM hack seems to be the successor to the TurboSIM from way back when. SonicSIM works by tricking your iPhone into thinking that an Apple-sanctioned SIM card has been installed. Check out the video below to see how this method works. (There’s been talk of this method and the accompanying video being fake. Anyone out there able to confirm as much?)

StealthSIM is likewise a hardware-based unlocking solution and leaves your iPhone’s baseband radio code intact - making future firmware updates possible without the threat of turning your iPhone into and iBrick. The installation instructions are pretty easy to follow, and for $90, it’s competitively priced.

In Audio Jibe they are preparing a base for iPhone, of name Sound Machine, that it has enamored to us at first sight. However, between the people in charge of its creation we found Robert Brunner, industrial designer head in Apple from 1989 to 1996, where the PowerBook created, and founder of Ammunition Group, the design company/signature with which it tries to take the electronics of design to a new level.

The Audio Jibe Sound Machine is the first product that the Californian company/signature will send at the beginning of 2008. Shortly after they will accompany earpieces with cancellation by noise that will use, like this base for iPhone, the principle of tape loudspeakers which already we saw in the loudspeakers Sunfire CRM-2 Cinema Ribbon, and a system of cinema in house with flat television set.

In order to equip the loudspeakers Sound Machine with the quality of sound that deserves best iPod, iPhone, in Audio Jibe has asked for the aid of Menlo Scientific, specialists of the sound with 25 years of experience in their salary and that have spilled all their knowledge are these demanding loudspeakers, whose secrets are not within reach of many.

In the Audio Jibe Sound Machine also we will have free hands Bluetooth, an exit to earpieces, a port USB to synchronize iPhone with the computer and an entrance of audio aid to connect other digital reproducers.

On the price, the power of the loudspeakers, the exact date of sale and other smaller details of the Audio Jibe Sound Machine so far nothing is known. Only we have left to wait for and to say so that in CES 2008 of Fertile valleys they show it in all his splendor.

Mobiblu made a name for itself after releasing the Mobiblu Cube digital audio player (DAP). The company is coming back with a new cube – a folding one this time. This version still has a 1GB of storage and has a size of 1.1” on each side.

We don’t know if it will be exported outside of Korea, but we hope that it follows its older sibbling, which is sold in Walmart for $70.

Accurian has rolled out a Video MP3 player that retails for a cent under the $60 mark, and it is capable of annoying those around you thanks to its built-in speaker. It comes with a built-in FM tuner and a 1.8" color display, where the latter is surely way too small for sustained video viewing. Great stuff for casual use, especially when you want to catch a quick video clip on the go, but otherwise I would still go for the tried and tested iPod.

Land Rover is all about riding the iPhone’s coat-tails - or at least it would seem that way by the look of their Land Rover LRX concept car. What better way to get your product noticed then by associating it with the iPhone? The Land Rover LRX will get some time in the spotlight at the Detroit Auto Show next month, but we got a bit of a head start of Motor City.

We’re not feeling the lines of this concept SUV all that much (a little too Ford-y for us), but we gotta give it up to Land Rover for making the iPhone an integral part of the LRX’s interior design. The iPhone is prominently displayed in the center console, and is used to complement the all the other LCD displays in the car.

We’re sure this car will never see anything close to a production line, but it would be great to see this level of iPhone integration in a future luxo-vehicle. BMW, Audi, Land Rover - anything from one of them would be just fine by us.

It turns out that those “unlocked” iPhones from France’s Orange and Germany’s short-lived unlocked iPhone offering from T-Mobile weren’t really all they were cracked up to be. You see, we had cracked them up to be truly unlocked iPhones capable of surfing any network in the world. Truly unlocked iPhones would have been an international iPhone fan-boy’s wet-dream. Alas, Apple had an Ace up their sleeve - all those unlocked iPhones are apparently still locked to their country of origin.

With Germany’s T-Mobile having recently resumed sales of exclusive, locked iPhones, France’s Orange is the world’s only source of Apple-sanctioned “unlocked” iPhones. Unfortunately, enterprising iPhone users thinking about buying an unlocked Orange iPhone and using it in another country will find out the hard way that the 749 Euro unlocked iPhone won’t work outside of France. Apple likely acquiesced to France’s telecom regulations by allowing unlocking iPhones to work with any wireless operator - as long as the non-Orange network was within French borders.

Anyone out there actually make a trip to France in hopes of using a fully-operational and firmware-upgradeable iPhone in, say, the US? Our condolences to your wallet. But then again, you should have known better. Apple-unlocked iPhones sounded too good to be true, and it seems it was too good indeed.

We love quoting CEO’s. They’re good at shooting off at the mouth and having to later eat those words. Take, for example, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s statement about the iPhone back in April. Mr. Balls-mer said that “There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.”

Well, guess what? The Apple iPhone took out the entirety of all Windows Mobile devices’ market share in Q3 2007. With iPhone market-share continuing to grow, Steve Ballmer is likely eating those bitter words. But, we’re sure he doesn’t mind it all that much - those tens of millions of dollars in yearly dessert-salary are a good way to wash that bitter taste off of any palette.

NPD is reporting that the iPhone snatched up a remarkable 27% of the US smartphone market in Q3 2007. The findings are in line with recent reports that the mobile-web was dominated by surfers using the iPhone’s unrivaled Safari browser.

Hey, Microsoft investors, you sure you still want to be feeding this guy all those fatty C-notes? He looks like he’s had more than his fair share.

Robert Scoble’s kid Patrick has an iPhone that isn’t lasting as long as it was on day one, something that batteries always seem to do. Mobile phones with multimedia capabilities inside tend to wear out batteries quite rapidly. I’ve had my N95 since August and I’m already up to my second battery. What will happen when people who own the iPhone can’t make it through the day? Will 2008 be the year that a huge wave of consumers sue Apple for their faulty batteries like they did back in 2005?

Apple fans are going to tell me that for $70 they can get their iPhone battery replaced. Fantastic news my friend, but how are you going to make phone calls when you’re mobile is in the shop?

With the TomTom GPS iPhone module’s future in serious doubt, it seemed like the beautifully huge multi-touch screen in the iPhone would never see its full glory as a GPS receiver. It turns out that the officially (Apple-sanctioned) unlocked iPhone you bought for 649 Euros (about US$965) from Orange in France ? which, according to some reports, accounts for up to 20% of total iPhone sales in France ? is not really unlocked. It retains a country lock, meaning the device will only allow use of SIM cards for carriers that operate in France. In other words, you can?t take your French, ?unlocked? iPhone to Spain, the United States, or anywhere else, pop in a foreign SIM card, and make calls on a local carrier ? you?re still stuck paying international roaming fees to your French carrier.

Attempting to use a foreign SIM card with one of these partially-unlocked phones will result in an inability to make phone calls, use SMS functionality, etc.

This is almost certainly a restriction imposed by Apple, loathe to see ?unlocked? phones shipped from France to the US or other countries where exclusive contracts are in place with local carriers.

France is the only country where you can purchase an ?unlocked? iPhone. In the US, UK and Germany (the only other markets where the iPhone is available), Apple holds exclusive contracts with AT&T, O2 and T-Mobile respectively. French law forbids the sale of one item that requires the purchase of another.

Purchasing an ?unlocked? phone in France requires that you provide name, address, and iPhone?s IMEI number to Orange customer service, which will unlock the iPhone in about 5 days. A message will be sent to you, indicating that you need to restore your iPhone, at which point iTunes will inform you that your phone has been unlocked.

Here is a little movie of ProRemote in action connected to a ProTools LE rig. The developer (Alex le Lievre) did this one a bit closer up for folks who thought his previous video was a fake. I did not write this software, I found it on the internet and posted it to share.

Just to clarify, ProTools is NOT running on the iPhone, the iPhone is running a "skin" of sorts to allow you to control your rig via WiFi from your iPhone.

We can’t tell you how much we love grainy spy-shots and questionable rumors. Like this one, for example. The image you see to the right shows what looks to be a TomTom-made GPS module plugged in to the bottom of an iPhone, with GPS navigation prompts displayed on the screen.

With the iPhone SDK slated for a February release and widely rumored to already be available to a select few developers, it’s entirely feasible that TomTom has been “tap-tapped” to bring GPS functionality to the iPhone by way of an official “Made for iPhone” accessory. On the flip-side, we’ve seen many a rumor come and go - which is to say, completely fail to materialize.

For what it’s worth, we don’t see any reason why Apple wouldn’t want to offer GPS navigation on the iPhone, and TomTom would be a logical choice for Apple. That is, it would be a perfect stop-gap until the 3G iPhone with GPS launches - right?

The S5 MP3 player from Acelabs of Korea has just gone to the fat house, measuring a mere 11mm thin. Features include a 2.8" LCD display and a DMB tuner. Courtesy of its Medio-2000 multimedia chip, the S5 touts to gain pretty good reception just about anywhere, allowing users to enjoy T-DMB programs for free (where supported, naturally). Sounds as though this will be a Korea-only release. The S5 will come in 2GB and 4GB variants, retailing for approximately $140 and $168 respectively. Video playback support, an image viewer, e-book functionality an an integrated FM radio rounds off the list of features. Pretty standard, no?

I was sitting in the pub recently (I'm a Brit, it's what I do), and I wanted to show my friend a photo of the sunset I saw on my honeymoon. I pulled out my phone and started typing in the URL for Picasa Web Albums. Before I could continue, he threw his shiny iPhone into my hand. He told me to launch the Safari browser bundled on the iPhone and give that a try.

I had a look around some websites and I really liked how they looked on the iPhone. I could get to everything I needed. I went to picasaweb.google.com but it didn't quite feel right. It was using some very cool AJAXy features, but these were designed with a desktop web-browsing experience in mind. So the next day I had a go at creating a new interface for Picasa Web, designed for the iPhone.

Today, I'm happy to tell you that we've just released this new iPhone interface for Picasa. After you go to Picasa on your iPhone and log in, you can quickly see all your albums that you've uploaded to Picasa Web. If you click on any of the albums, you can get a full view of your picture with comments from your friends. Or you can click on Slideshow, sit back and watch the pictures scroll. You can also search for photos in your album or through community photos. Finally, with one of my favorite features, you can view your friends' albums through favorites.

Apparently, Picasa was not one of the Google’s apps and services optimized for the iPhone. So, they’ve decided to change that and voila… iPhone and iPod Touch users can now access the special version of Picasa Web Albums right from their shiny gadgets. You can browse and search your albums, get a full view of your pictures, read comments, and also access your friends’ albums through favorites. Nicely done Google, now please optimize your UI’s for other popular devices as well (i.e. Symbian).

After meeting with key component suppliers and manufacturers in Asia, researchers for investment bank Goldman Sachs said this week they believe Apple will introduce two revisions to the iPhone in 2008 -- one minor, one major -- in addition to an Apple TV overhaul during the second half of the year.

In a research note on Tuesday, analyst David Bailey advised clients that his Far Eastern contacts have lead him to believe that "Apple has several important new products lined up for 2008," though none of them are expected to pack the same punch as the company's inaugural iPhone handset.

Among them is a second-generation iPhone currently in the "final design phase," the analyst said. The handset is expected to "have a similar form factor as the current version although it could have a different look and will probably include 3G capability."

Bailey estimates that the next-gen iPhone will launch sometime during the second half of the year, but also believes the company will tie over consumers with "a smaller upgrade with more flash memory earlier in the year."

Meanwhile, the analyst's Asian contacts have also led him to believe that "Apple will be making changes to Apple TV" sometime in the second half of 2008 "which could include an LCD display."

"Apple will refresh its entire Mac line-up throughout 2008, but information about the potential launch of a subnotebook was scarce, with one supplier saying that the product may be pushed out, citing possible design issues," he added.

In general, Bailey said several of the companies he met with suggested that they were seeing higher than expected shipments of iPods this quarter, with one commenting that Apple adjusted orders upward in October during the peak holiday season manufacturing build.

"Both the iPod Touch and nano are seeing strength while iPod shuffle demand seems stable, which should cause blended average selling prices (ASPs) to come in above our $150 estimate," he wrote.

This data point appears to corroborate recent comments from CNBC's Jim Goldman, who last week cited his own sources in Asia as saying that the iPod Touch was selling "far better than expected," compelling one of the Apple's manufacturing partners to increase production to 5.1 million units for the current quarter.

For his part, Bailey added that his supply chain contacts are expecting another year of double-digit iPod growth in 2008. On the Mac side, he said, Apple?s notebook demand remains strong and should drive above-market growth for the seventh quarter in a row ? a trend that suppliers expect will continue in the new year.

Goldman Sachs maintains a Buy rating on Apple shares with a 12-month price target of $205 per share.

Or at least as real as a proof-of-concept application can get. The iPhone’s lack of video recording was an interesting omission that didn’t really make sense. Battery issues shouldn’t be, well, an issue. There’s really no extra hardware involved. And every other decent cameraphone has video recording capability. So, it’s up to the third-party iPhone developers to bring some fancy video-magic to the table.

The coders over at Monsters and Friends have cranked out an early-stage application that allows a bit of video recording functionality on the iPhone. So far, the application endows the iPhone with 10 seconds of 10fps video recording at 2 megapixel resolution. Apparently, max fps rates are capped around 40-45 frames-per-second. A handful of seconds of measly 10fps video really isn’t that impressive, but that’s not what we’re thinking about here. The real news is that development is ongoing and the ready-for-launch version of the application should bring unlimited video recording (at 15-30+fps) to the iPhone. Next step - get a minute of 30 fps video at a lower resolution.

Yea, thanks Apple. Way to leave the essentials to the iPhone hackers while you keep yourself busy with not getting us that new v1.1.3 firmware. And, props to Monsters and Friends.

ZVUE's ZP3 digital audio player does not let you go home empty-handed - it is pre-loaded with 30 of this year's top hits, and has been made available in more than 3,400 Wal-Mart stores and other retailers throughout the US. Unfortunately, the ZP3 MP3 player has a paltry 512MB of internal memory - looks like there are no improvements in terms of hardware one year after its launch. 512MB of space roughly translates to 125 songs in MP3 format. The ZVUE ZP3 supports DRM WMA music files, the MTP (media transport protocol) standard, and Windows Media Player 10. A single AAA battery is capable of powering the ZVUE for up to 8 hours. Audio is transferred between the computer to the ZVUE ZP3 via a USB connection. 30 top hits of the year eh, sounds like a bag of mixed surprises to me. If you’re into something a little bit more updated, why not check out the ZVUE 260 portable media player?

If Apple’s newest job listing is any indicator, the techies at Cupertino are looking to bring on a new employee to finally bring Microsoft Exchange functionality to the iPhone. Apple is apparently looking for a “motivated, highly-technical Exchange test/sync engineer with excellent problem solving and communication skills,” who will be joining “a dynamic team responsible for qualifying the latest iPhone products…Your focus will be testing Exchange and Outlook functionality with Apple?s innovative new phone.”

Apple has been pushing to break into the enterprise environment with the iPhone, but the lack of support for the Microsoft Exchange email system that hive-minded corporations love so much has kept the iPhone largely a favorite of the consumer crowd. With support for the email syncing capabilities of MS Exchange, however, Apple could successfully make the iPhone a business contender that may give the BlackBerry a serious run for its money. As it stands today, the iPhone is only capable of limited MS Exchange support through third-party offerings and supports IMAP email synchronization in certain situations.

A recent survey found that 98% of respondents would be much more likely to pick up an iPhone if it had support for Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft ActiveSync. While ActiveSync is pretty much the arch-rival of Apple’s iTunes-based sync strategy, it might make prudent business sense for Apple to give in and finally support it. After all, Apple’s support for MS software applications like the MS Office suite and even virtualization of Windows has brought Apple to the competitive foreground in recent years.

If Apple does rollout support for Microsoft Exchange email synchronization, you can bet that we’ll be setting up our own MS Exchange servers.

InTempo has released its new iPod docking station and speaker system that boasts integrated dual band DAB digital and FM radio. For those who are out of the loop, DAB is a digital broadcasting spectrum used primarily in Europe that claims to offer better audio fidelity in addition to other enhanced features relative to FM. This new InTempo offering comes in glossy "piano" black and features a 30 watt output, a 15 watt subwoofer, compatibility with the iPod family (does not charge the iPod Shuffle though) and MP3 players, an alarm clock with snooze function. Forget about GameBoy and NES emulators — your iPhone can do much more. Apparently, soon we’ll have the full Sony Playstation emulator available for both the iPhone and iPhone Touch.

The developer “zodttd” is working on the software called PSX4iPhone, and according to him users could expect that up to 75% of the original games work with the emulator. In addition, he’s saying the application will support the memory card, but warns there’s still work to be done regarding the saved states…

Interested? Sure you are! It’s still not available for the non-developers, but a public beta should hit its website anytime soon…

This is most definitely one of the coolest third-party iPhone applications that have yet to hit the third-party application market. The iPhone’s capacitance-based multi-touch screen is perfect for on-the-fly, simple manipulation with a brush of the finger. So, it makes sense to put it to good use - like controlling your Pro Tools setup so that you can master your own tracks in real time. That’s right, with the help of a WiFi connection and a MIDI controller on your Pro Tools-rig, Alex le Lievre’s iPhone Pro Tools controller is one slick little app (it works with the iPod Touch, naturally).

Like any good entrepreneur should do, Alex le Lievre is looking to make some bucks off his creation. He plans to release his Pro Tools controlling, third-party iPhone application as soon the iPhone SDK launches next year.

The app lets you mix and fade different tracks and lets you record your actions for playback later. We’re not exactly “hip” to the music-production lingo so we’ll just let the video below do all the talking.

The iPhone and iPod Touch are pretty similar in many ways, so it makes sense that this PSX emulator runs on both just fine. Developer “zodttd” has dubbed his software PSX4iPhone, and claims that up to three quarters of the original games function just fine on the emulator. Memory card support is included, although you would do well to take note that there is still some way to go where saved states are concerned before it is stable enough for everyday gaming. The PSX had its fair share of turkeys and gems, but as long as this emulator plays nice with Final Fantasy Tactics, I'm sold.

Technical geeks will be happy to hear that Mactracker has updated its sometimes useful, always interesting (to us, at least) database of Mac products to include the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The new Mactracker is upgraded to work with Leopard (you have upgraded, haven’t you?), integrates warranty information with iCal, shows “iTunes compatibility” for iPod, and has a revised search engine.

Someone has ported SvSIP, a VOIP application used on the Nintendo DS, to the iPod Touch and it apparently works. Just like many other VOIP software, the SIP protocol is used to carry voice over the internet. The author of the conversion promised to publish screenshots soon.

It would be logical to think that it would eventually work on the iPhone as well.

They sure didn’t waste any time in putting their newly acquired markets to good use. Having just taken over all of Dobson Communications’ infrastructure and licenses, is bringing the iPhone to all former Cellular One (formerly owned by Dobson Communcations) markets. AT&T has started to convert 200 Cellular One stores across 16 states into the more familiar AT&T Stores, and will start to offer their stable of mobile phones to all former Cellular One subscribers.� The transition is expected to be completed in 2008.

With the transition, Alaska will finally be getting the iPhone. AT&T is bringing the iPhone to Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau starting tomorrow (Sunday). What better way to spend a snowed-in day in Alaska than by playing with a brand-new iPhone?

NEXT Christmas for sure, but not this one - if you hanker for a 'legit' iPhone, and have been checking out Sim Lim Square for it.

That is because Apple, the maker of the cellphone popular in the United States and Europe, will only release it in Asia next year.

According to retailers, Apple threatened in an e-mail to go after them for illegally 'unlocking' parallel imported iPhones. The phones are unlocked by hacking into their software so that local SIM cards can be used.

Sim Lim Square retailers and even some online local sellers have stopped selling the gadget.

A retailer in Sim Lim Square said shops there, including his, received a warning e-mail from Apple about a month ago.

It threatened legal action should they continue to sell 'hacked' iPhones, which could make them liable for $1,000 per iPhone sold.

A Straits Times check with 12 electronics shops and cellphone sellers in Sim Lim Square found none openly selling the gadget.

But one retailer on the fourth floor said the sought-after phone could be 'brought in' for interested buyers.

Four online cellphone retailers which sold iPhones previously have removed the product from their websites.

The Straits Times spoke to two of them. They confirmed that the e-mail was a factor in their decision to stop importing and reselling the product.

Said one: 'For a couple of tens of dollars, it's not worth breaching the law for.'

iPhones brought in from elsewhere are 'locked', that is, they work only with SIM cards from service providers Apple has partnered with. For example, iPhones in the US work only with SIM cards from US telco AT&T.

According to Mr Han Wah Teng, associate director at Keystone Law Corp, hacking the iPhone's software constitutes a breach of the copyright law.

Said Mr Han: 'What you pay for is only the licence to use the software. You still need permission from the software owner to reproduce or modify it.'

So while selling parallel imported electronics is legal, hacking their software is not.

Apple estimates that 250,000 iPhones have been unlocked worldwide.

It is currently sold only in the US and Europe, although Apple plans to launch the iPhone in Asia next year.

The locking of the phones has been a contentious issue for Apple, with several lawsuits brought against it in the US and Europe.

Those suing Apple charge that it is anti-competitive and their consumer rights have been violated.
