Campfire hits the iPhone

Campfire optimized for iPhoneUsers of the group-chat interface Campfire will be glad to hear that they can continue the group-conversation on their iPhone. 37signals has announced that their Campfire interface is now live on the iPhone. Any iPhone that visits a campfire site will find that a new iPhone-optimized interface is waiting for them.

The iPhone-specific Campfire sites have been designed to allow you to scroll through the chat-transcript, but you’ll need to use a “two-finger scroll” method.

If you use Campfire and the iPhone, head to your Campfire site and, uh, fire ‘er up! We don’t use Campfire, so let us know how you like the new iPhone interface.

MindMeister?s Geistesblitz Tools goes iPhone

MindMeister Geistesblitz Tools goes iPhoneDon’t know you have heard about MindMeister, but it’s a great web-based mind mapping tool which allows creation of mind maps by multiple users in real time — and which I personally use. And guess what, they’ve decided to get some media attention by adding support for Apple’s handset.

To be fair, it’s not the complete service you’ll be able to access from your iPhone. Rather the Germany-based company decided to “iPhone-ize” their Geistesblitz Tools, allowing users to quickly submit their ideas (or Geistesblitzes) to a default map in MindMeister. The ideas are inserted in a special branch top left of the root and remain there for you to copy to other maps, or move around within the default map.

Finally in case you’re wondering what the hack “Geistesblitz” means, it’s literally translated as mind flash - a sudden insight or idea, often brilliant and unexpected…

Dropped Calls With iPhone Update?

Dropped Calls With iPhone Update?

Word on the street has it that iPhone users who have upgraded to the 1.1.3 firmware are currently experiencing a higher rate of dropped calls, with an invisible gremlin following their handset to mysteriously turn a five bar signal strength to zero whenever you are talking, only to have it return to full strength when you hang up. Should one engage the services of the local shaman to rid their iPhone of this bug, or will the standard "jiggle the SIM card" procedure work this time? Is this true? Could any of our dear readers verify with this bit of news?

This is one MP3 player that definitely makes you stand out from the crowd - the Cooper Blue Diamond G-2 MP3 player. It looks like a piece of jewelry from far away, but upon closer inspection, you'll notice that it actually comes with the following specifications :-

  • MP3, WMA and WAV files playback

  • LRC lyric support for sing-along sessions

  • 128 x 64 two-color OLED display
This 2GB MP3 player will retail for approximately $28 - I wonder whether there are plans for a video-capable version in the future.

O2 offers iPhone customers more bang for buck - more wireless minutes and text messages for the same tariff

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

In an apparent effort to spur sales of the iPhone in the UK, Apple’s iPhone partner, O2, has announced that they’ll be radically changing their iPhone wireless plans. Most O2 iPhone customers will see a three-fold increase in wireless minutes on the same monthly tariff.

O2 iPhone customers on the 35 wireless plan can look forward to 600 wireless minutes (up from 200) and “more than double” the number of bundled SMS text messages. Those with 45 plans can expect to get a bump up to 1,200 minutes and 500 SMS text messages - the same as the current 55 plan. O2 will be dissolving its 55 plan and replacing it with a 75 “super-tier” wireless plan. “Super-tier” customers will be offered 3,000 minutes and 500 included SMS text messages.

O2 changing iPhone plans, offering triple minutes for same price

The iPhone’s on-contract (18 months) will remain unchanged at 269. Current customers on the 55 plan can choose to save the 10 or upgrade to the “super-tier.” The new plans should go into effect on February 1.

Now, that’s what O2 iPhone customers should have been offered from the beginning. These revised rate-plans may just help boost iPhone sales in the UK - adding to the 190,000 iPhones sold in the first 8 weeks of sales.

Leaked iPhone SDK key for third-party application authentication?

Did Apple (or someone with the right connections) leak the iPhone application SDK key?

Well, according to those that know more about iPhone development than us, the code you see below is the official iPhone application SDK key.

The key was apparently going to be used to authenticate official third-party applications that were developed using the official iPhone SDK. But, now that the key has hit the ‘nets, we’re sure that Apple will be coming up with a new key when the SDK launches - which is to say, next month.

iPhone application SDK key

Still, the discovery of this key suggests that iPhone hackers are close to developing third-party applications that are recognized and installable through iTunes. If iPhone developers are able to home-in on a solution to load third-party applications onto the iPhone, via iTunes, firmware jailbreaks may become a thing of the past.

Let’s see what happens next month.

Here’s the iPhone application SDK key:

Softbank's Full Face 2 - also known as the 921 SH might fool you from a distance into thinking that it is actually an iPhone, but it isn't. Don't go thinking that the large screen real estate you see up front is touch sensitive since it is just meant to display information and not to interact with. The 3.2" LCD display has a resolution of 480 x 854 and is equipped with a motion sensor located at the bottom. Other features of this Sharp-designed handset are :-

  • 3.2 megapixel camera

  • microSDHC memory card support

  • Felica support
You can tell this beauty of a fingerprint magnet will remain strictly a Japan-only device. Sigh...

MoBeam Keychain Barcode is the iPod for Coupons

MoBeam Keychain Barcode is the iPod for Coupons

[DEMO 08] Ecrio’s MoBeam is a small device that can store coupons transferred via Bluetooth. The coupons can originate from many sources, including a cellphone (downloaded from the web/email/SMS) or a coupon-broadcasting station at a retailer. The device is capable of sending light signals that emulate the reflection of a paper barcode to a normal barcode reader. That’s good news for the retailer because there’s no need for expensive equipment expenditures.

From there, it’s not hard to imagine a PC application and an iTunes equivalent of local coupons… Is this “Coupons 2.0”? Also, if that leads to having less SPAM in my (physical) mailbox, that would be great!

Treasuremytext goes iPhone

Don’t know have you heard about Treasuremytext, but it’s quite a neat service. Basically, they are providing users with an SMS archive service, and as you can guess - they’ve just announced support for the Apple iPhone.

Treasuremytext goes iPhoneThe application, still in beta, requires Jailbroken iPhone with “Installer App” and a Treasuremytext account. After you’ve installed the app, you’ll be able to delete individual text messages (a feature missing from the built in SMS application), archive SMS to your Treasuremytext account, and even send SMS free of charge (either via EDGE or Wifi). In addition, once you’ve archived your SMS, you’ll be able to access it via Treasuremytext’s website, where they (text messages) are saved with the original date sent and contact information. Nice!

Interested? Sure you are. However, there’s a catch. As we said the application is still in beta so getting it to work isn’t actually the easiest thing to do. You’ll need an invite and some tweaking on your iPhone. That being said, I’m better off leaving you to read the full post on Treasuremytext’s blog which has all the instructions. So here it goes and good luck! ;)

T-Mobile Germany chime in on iPhone sales - 70,000 iPhones sold so far

iPhone Germany T-MobileFollowing on iPhone sales figures from Apple, Orange, and O2, T-Mobile Germany has finally chimed in on their own sales numbers.

T-Mobile Germany has apparently sold about 70,000 iPhones in its 11 weeks of sales. If you’ll recall, the iPhone hit the German market in November of last year, and has been selling at an average rate of 900 units per day. France’s Orange iPhone stands in stark contrast to Germany’s three-month iPhone sales performance. The French carrier sold 70,000 iPhones in its first month of sales - definitely an interesting look at the T-Mobile iPhone announcement.

Still, T-Mobile Germany’s Philipp Humm stated that “the iPhone is by far the most sold multimedia device in T-Mobile’s portfolio.”

Ah, yet another iPod Shuffle-like MP3 player, save for the fact that this is but a concept. Known as the Tactile MP3 player, you don't get any displays with these. Instead, there are 5 basic controls on the surface that help you navigate through your audio. These buttons are denoted by Braille-like bumps. I'd like a fancy screen to go with my MP3 player though, thank you very much. Guess should this ever make it into production, it will probably target gym boffins.

Apple lowers iPhone shipment projection for fiscal 2Q08, says paper

iPhone v1.1.3 firmware ready to run official third-party applications

iPhone v1.1.3 firmware ready for official third-party Apple applicationsCould this firmware be the one that Steve Jobs has been holding over our heads for the past few months? Most likely.

It seems that the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware has been primped and prepped to play nice with officially, Apple-sanctioned third-party application. Here’s a rundown of what’s different in the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware:

  • Applications actually show up in the /Applications folder (no modification necessary)

  • Applications run under user “mobile” rather than “root”

  • Preferences are stored in var/mobile instead of var/root

  • SpringBoard (the homescreen application) seems to also support widgets

The new iPhone framework appears to have been reworked to run applications in a more restricted user-environment. Running the apps under “mobile” provides extra protection and prevents any third-party app from making dangerous changes to your iPhone’s firmware - the kind of firmware-alterations that are possible when running applications as “root.”

There is also some widget support, native homescreen pagination (multiple homescreen pages), and applications are set to store themselves in the official /Applications directory.

All signs point to the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware being “the one” that will accept and run official installable applications from Apple-approved third-party developers.

Now, all we have to do is wait for Apple to release that iPhone SDK.

iPhone v1.1.3 software-based jailbreak on the verge of public release - the best of both worlds!

iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreakRight. Remember when we speculated that the iPhone dev community was holding off on releasing their software-based jailbreak method so as to not give Apple a chance to patch the exploit with the release of their official iPhone SDK? Well, it looks like we were wrong - and we can’t say we’ve ever been happier to be wrong about something.

Word on the street has it that the simpler of two viable jailbreak methods could be released as soon as “tonight or tomorrow!” The iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak process should prove to be no more difficult than the iPhone v1.1.2 jailbreak method.

With the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware reportedly ready to rock-and-roll with official third-party applications, it seems that the iPhone dev community sees this as a good time to release the software-based iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak solution. But, they’re apparently keeping the more complex of the two jailbreak solutions on lock-down, just in case Apple does decide to do a last-minute firmware patch, rendering the public jailbreak method invalid.

Stay tuned! We’ll keep you updated as the jailbreak becomes public.

iPhone gives AT&T huge subscriber boost, Q4 earnings increase 61%

AT&T has good fiscal 2007With the end of the fiscal year, companies are making public just how much they made or lost over the past year. One of the year’s clear winners is AT&T. They just released their yearly statements, outlining a 61.8% increase in Q4 2007 earnings to $3.14 billion, compared to Q4 2006. Sales were up 91% to $30.35 billion from $15.9 billion a year ago.

AT&T also increased their subscriber-base by 2.7 million customers (to a nation-leading 70.1 million total subscribers) - fueled by the influx of new AT&T customers signing-on to get their hands on an iPhone. Wireless revenues were up 16.3% to $11.4 billion.

It looks like AT&T’s 2.3 million iPhone users played a large part in making 2007 a great year for AT&T. We wonder just how many of those users defected from Sprint.

Apple cuts down on iPhone orders for Q2

Apple lowers shipment orders for iPhoneApple’s done quite well for itself with the iPhone. They’ve moved millions upon millions of the heralded handset, and they’re rolling in revenue-dough.

Now there’s a report, from the Chinese-language Economic Daily News, that Apple has reduced its Q2 iPhone orders from 2 million to 1.0-1.2 million - about half the expected amount of Q1 iPhone orders. The China-based tech-rag points to slow European iPhone sales as a reason for the reduction in handset orders, however they failed to provide further details.

With Steve Jobs’ recent announcement that Apple has sold 4 million iPhones since its launch, and is currently sustaining daily iPhone sales rates of 20,000 units, it seems unlikely that Apple is worried about their European sales figures. At the stated sales-rate, Apple is on track to move 1.8 million iPhones by March of this year, completely invalidating the Economic Daily News’ “report.”

The discrepancy could be attributed to Apple’s multi-supplier strategy. Apple routinely calls upon multiple suppliers to source their components, a strategy that aims to reduce Apple’s exposure to supply-chain and market volatility - Apple sources their touch-screen component from two different suppliers.

As such, any estimates based on a single supplier’s iPhone component-orders could lead to projected iPhone orders that are about half of actual iPhone shipments.

Or maybe the iPhone is really bombing in sales.

The Case of the Missing iPhones

The Case of the Missing iPhones

According to Apple, they have shipped four million iPhones since launch. AT&T customers comprise of just under half that amount, which leaves a large number of handsets unaccounted for. According to Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research, the sum of AT&T's subscription numbers and European projections would mean around 1.4 million iPhones are sitting idly on store shelves or being sold as unlocked devices. The latter currently stands at approximately 250,000 units, so that leaves approximately more than half a million iPhones that are missing in action. What are some of your theories behind this? Does this mean that HTC, having sold (not shipped) more than 2 million HTC Touches is actually the big winner here?

Retarded criminals bungle iPhone burglary

iPhone robberyEveryone wants an iPhone, right? No? Well, it’s a a hot-selling handset for sure - a tempting mark for wannabe crooks looking to turn a quick buck. Following on that other idiotic criminal venture that was caught on tape (okay, it’s wasn’t literally a tape, but rather a digital recording), two retarded New York truck drivers hatched a plan to steal the 300 iPhones, destined for Hong Kong, that were sitting in the rear of the delivery truck.

Apparently, the bumbling duo swiped the iPhone-shipment and replaced them with reams of paper. They offloaded the, uh, load, at Kennedy Airport, quit their jobs, and kicked off plans to move to Florida. Emmanuel Etienne, 20, of 761 Grand Terrace, and Jarred E. Thomas, 22, of 520 Woodland Estates Dr. (it’s great that we know their addresses, isn’t it?), were in the midst of buying up everything a pair of ghetto criminals could want - diamond stud Yankees earrings, Mark Ecko watches, Nike high-top sneakers, and, wait for it, a pair of matching Maroon-colored cars (an Acura and a Volkswagon) - when they got nabbed by police. The two men were charged with second-degree larceny.

The crooks may have gotten away with their scheme if Cathay Pacific airline workers didn’t notice the shady-looking wrapping on the shipment of boxes. Etienne and Thomas, in their rush to buy matching Maroon-colored cars, did a crap job of re-shrink-wrapping the boxes. The questionable wrapping immediately drew the suspicion of Cathay Pacific workers, who found the reams of paper in place of iPhones.

We’re not condoning illicit trade-practices, but come on. If you’re going to steal, then do it right. Dimwits…

This portable media player (PMP) has been compared to the Meizu M6, but I think that the iPod nano is its most likely adversary. The Zarva V1 is 6.4mm thick, just a little bit smaller than the (fat) iPod nano and its 6.5mm. At that point, the difference doesn’t really matter and the killer question is: “Where’s the Zarva V1 iTunes?” The answer: “It costs $28”.

iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak gets easier, still not released to public

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak gets easier, not public yetWell, that didn’t take too long. It feels like we were just talking about the iPhone development community having cooked up a rather complicated jailbreak solution for the iPhone v1.1.3. Unfortunately, the jailbreak method wasn’t ready for prime-time because us mere mortals apparently didn’t have the mental facilities to deal with the jailbreaking minutiae.

Anyway, word on the street has it that the iPhone Dev community has drummed up an end-user-friendly version of the iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak. It seems that the current, easier iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak method is about as complex as the iPhone v1.1.2 jailbreak - which is a good thing. Unfortunately, us iPhone users will have to wait until Apple releases the official iPhone SDK before we get the iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak in our hands.

The reasoning? The iPhone Dev community doesn’t want Apple to patch the jailbreak exploit with the inevitable firmware update that should follow the release of the iPhone SDK. And, we completely agree - it’d be great to have a fully jailbroken iPhone that can support both official iPhone applications and the grass-roots third-party iPhone applications that we’ve become somewhat attached to - a public v1.1.3 jailbreak method could very well mean that Apple will kill the jailbreak solution and lock-down the iPhone for official application-use.

In either case, we can’t wait for official third-party apps to play alongside our Installer.app-sourced third-party applications.

A sign of the times: iPhone-shaped scale

Pocket scale looks like iPhoneWhat has our society come to when drug-dealers and calorie-counters look for pocket scales that embody the new hotness in the cellphone industry? Who are we kidding - calorie-counters? This thing’s marketed at illicit-substance traders - drug-pushers, drug-dealers, whatever you want to call them.

The iPhone-shaped scale is being offered for $52.49 and features, well, an iPhone-shaped “expansion cover.” We like the attempt at the iPhone-homescreen look. Everyone else is jumping on the iPhone bandwagon, what’s to stop a pocket-scale manufacturer from doing the same?

Now, does this thing work with current jailbreak solutions? We imagine that could be a useful feature for anyone in the drug-trafficking business.

Oh, and if you’re wondering what this is doing on a mobile-related post, it’s shaped like an iPhone. That qualifies as mobile-related in our book.

Makayama?s VoiceDial makes iPhone understand your voice; Costs money

Makayama VoiceDial

Makayama has released a new native iPhone application called VoiceDial. As you can probably guess from its name, the application adds voice dialing feature to the iPhone, but also allows users to start applications and open Safari bookmarks without touching their shiny handset — all they have to do is say it and Makayama’s app will take it from there.

The interesting thing about VoiceDial is that it isn’t free. So far virtually all applications we’ve seen — except Navizon — have been developed by iPhone enthusiasts and were offered as a free download. Entrance of the established developer like Makayama to the space is certainly encouraging to the iPhone users, even though they’ll have to pay $27.95 or 19.95 EUR in order to download VoiceDial… More information is available from here.

Recycling iPod Speaker

I must admit - this isn't exactly the most endearing term I have come across to date for an iPod speaker, but what the heck. Bird Electron has taken the minimalist approach with this speaker that looks decidedly DIY. Also known as the EZ17-B, it fits nicely into the clear plastic box that some versions of the nano and Shuffle ship in, and does not need an additional power source. For those who hate keeping clutter around the home, fret not. This works just fine with an empty water bottle, although it will probably add a negative to your sex appeal. I think I'll pass on the $40 price tag.

The newest screen-tapping time-waster to hit the iPhone is PocketGuitar. With simulated, on-screen guitar frets and a strum “board,” PocketGuitar brings the faux-rockster as close to a real guitar-experience as you can get on the iPhone. Wannabe guitar-rockers will have a blast with this game. Real musicians will just be disgusted.

AT&T rolls out Apple iPhone for corporate and business customers

iPhone coming to AT&T corporate accountsAll you corporate-types that have been waiting to apply your corporate/business account discounts toward a shiny, new iPhone can finally breathe easy. As we previously reported, the rumors about AT&T’s plan to bring the iPhone to corporate and business customers have come to fruition.

Today, AT&T has made the iPhone available to all corporate accounts - with the stipulation that the iPhone be purchased with a new 2-year contract (or that current contract be renewed to 2 years). Users must activate a valid iPhone voice plan and an Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone. While the voice plans will be offered at the expected corporate-discount pricing scheme, corporate customers will have to sign up for a $45 Enterprise Data Plan that includes the same unlimited data and 200 SMS text messages that residential customers get for $20.

However, AT&T is offering a $25 monthly-discount on the Enterprise Data Plan for eligible corporate/business accounts that maintain valid Enterprise voice and data plans for the entirety of their contract. Customers will have to activate their Enterprise iPhone pan by March 31, 2008 to qualify for this discount.

Corporate and business users go forth and snatch up that iPhone you’ve been waiting for! With IBM’s Lotus Notes destined to hit the iPhone soon, we’re sure you’ll be more than happy to deal with that clunky email system on your iPhone. What’s that you say? You need some MS Exchange support? Um, join the party.

O2 UK moves 190,000 iPhones in first 8 weeks of sales

O2 UK sells 190,000 iPhones in first 8 weeks of salesAll those European-iPhone naysayers are sure to love this little tidbit coming out of the UK.

The Financial Times is reporting that “people familiar with the situation” have indicated that O2 UK, Apple’s British iPhone partner, has moved something like 190,000 iPhones out its doors in the first two months of iPhone-sales - which is pretty much on track with O2’s goal of selling 200,000 iPhones in the first 8 weeks of sales.

O2 declined to comment on actual sales numbers, but has said that it is “delighted with the response to the iPhone, which has seen unprecedented levels of customer satisfaction,” adding that the Apple iPhone is O2’s hottest-selling mobile phone “by a significant margin.”

The report comes amid speculation that iPhone sales have been sluggish in the UK. But, this new report seems to fall in line with Ben’s assertion that the iPhone has sparked an upturn in O2’s subscriber-count. We all know that the iPhone lacks in the features department, but that fact actually makes a stronger case for the iPhone’s impact on the global mobile phone market.

Well done, O2. Now, just make sure you snag the 3G iPhone contract, ‘kay?

Downgrade your iPhone v1.1.3 to v1.1.1

iPhone v1.1.3 downgrade to v1.1.1That iPhone v1.1.3 firmware not meeting your expectations? Is multiple-contact SMS text message support, Google Maps with “My Location,” WebClips, and homescreen customization proving to not be worth sacrificing your third-party applications?

Well, you’re in luck. If the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware isn’t as great as you expected it to be, then you’re more than welcome to downgrade to the v1.1.1 firmware - granted, your iPhone will no longer function as a phone.

If you want out of the iPhone v1.1.3, follow these steps:

  1. Download iPHUC

  2. Download the iPhone v1.1.1 firmware package here

  3. Extract the package to your desktop (or anywhere that you’ll easily remember - you’ll have to enter the path to this folder, so keep it simple)

  4. Connect your iPhone/iPod Touch to your computer - quit iTunes if it opens up, or if it’s already running

  5. Execute iPHUC

  6. Enter “recovery mode” in iPHUC by issuing the command “enterrecovery” (without quotes, obviously)

  7. Issue the “filecopytophone” command to copy the v1.1.1 firmware to your iPhone/iPod Touch - it should look something like this:

    filecopytophone c:\WTF.s5l8900xall.RELEASE.dfu

    or

    filecopytophone \Users\IntoMobile\Desktop\v1.1.3downgrade\WTF.s5l8900xall.RELEASE.dfu

  8. Hit “Enter”

  9. Issue the “cmd go” command and hit “Enter”

  10. Quit iPHUC

  11. Fire up iTunes and click “OK” when it prompts you about your iPhone/iTouch being in recover mode

  12. Restore your iPhone/iTouch to the v1.1.1 firmware by Option-Click (Mac) or Shift-Click (Windows) on the “Restore” button

  13. Locate and choose the v1.1.1 ipsw file

  14. If you get a 1015 error, issue the “cmd fsboot” command in iPHUC

You now have a fully functioning and jailbreakable iPod Touch or a jailbreakable iPhone that doesn’t make phone calls. Good luck!

HOT: iPhone v1.1.3 firmware already jailbroken - full read/write access to filesystem; native third-party applications

Welp, that’s the game, folks! Just days after the third-party application-killing iPhone v1.1.3 firmware was released, the iPhone developing/hacking community has already put together a legit jailbreak solution for all iPhones and iPod Touches running v1.1.3 code. Apparently, some firmware code-digging has revealed that Apple’s codename for the v1.1.3 firmware is “LittleBear” - now that’s cute.

Now, the jailbreak (which allows full read/write access to the iPhone’s file-system, and thus allows native third-party applications to be installed) solution has been deemed by its developers as too complex for public consumption. That means there is no public jailbreak solution available, but rest assured that this major milestone in iPhone v1.1.3 development puts a public jailbreak solution on track for a near-term release.

Just in case you’re more cynic than enthusiast, check out the video clip of a jailbroken iPod Touch, running the v1.1.3 firmware, and demonstrating some Installer.app goodness. The jailbreak solution has been confirmed to work on both iPhones and iPod Touches.

O2 customer numbers soar on the back of iPhone interest

O2logo-small

This isn?t a post about how many iPhones have been sold (since people don?t leave that kind of data laying about!), but rather about the knock-on effect in O2 stores in the UK. It?s been reported that there has been a three-fold (that?s 3x for those of you that like to abbreviate) increase in the number of people coming in to stores since the wonderphone?s release?.

Whilst there have been some anecdotal reports that the iPhone may not have done the volumes expected, this ?pebble in a pond? radiating effect on sales of other devices, accessories, and tariffs, can only be a good thing.

My opinion (for what it?s worth) is that securing the iPhone was another master-stroke by O2, following hotly on the heels of the launch of ?The O2? (formerly the Millenium Dome) ? for anyone that has been there, you will no doubt have been impressed at the experience! Having pulled that not inconsequential feat off, O2 then secured the most sought-after (if not most-hyped) device since time started, and have now boosted customers in-store! Amazing!

Well Done O2 UK!

Google announces faster, more customizable Google experience for iPhone Users

At the first day of Macworld, Google announced new improvements to the integrated Google experience on iPhone. The previous version, launched just over a month ago, brought together our suite of web applications -- including Search, Gmail, Calendar, Reader, and more -- into one easy-to-use interface. Since then, we've streamlined the interface even further, making the applications faster and improving their usability. Some of the improvements announced today include:

Improved UI: The applications look and feel slicker, and they are easier to activate, navigate and use via a touch-screen.

Customization of default tabs: Now Google users can have easy access to their favorite applications by customizing the applications that appear on the Google.com menu bar. Users simply choose their favorite Google applications to bring them to the front menu, ensuring that they'll be close at hand whenever they're needed. Switching between applications is effortless, as users only need to sign in once to access their Gmail, Calendar, Reader, Docs, and Picasa accounts.

Speedier Gmail: New emails will automatically show up so there's no need to manually refresh inboxes. And the new auto-complete feature for contacts makes composing emails faster than ever.

Speedier Calendar: With our new month view, users can glance at an entire month of appointments.

iGoogle: Now Google users can access their iGoogle gadgets on the iPhone. Everything they've customized on their iGoogle homepage including weather, stocks, and news feeds now appear on their iPhones. To go to iGoogle, simply click on the iGoogle link on the Home tab. You can customize your iGoogle page on your computer at www.igoogle.com.

These new features provide iPhone users with a desktop-like Google web application experience in terms of ease-of-use, speed, and feature richness but optimized for the iPhone. This experience is made possible by the iPhone's general usability and the capabilities of its web browser, combined with Google's innovative mobile web applications. We plan to expand this experience to international versions of the iPhone and to other platforms that offer similar usability and browser capabilities. One of our goals is to support platforms that are fulfilling the promise of the mobile web - like the iPhone - and to ultimately deliver unique and compelling mobile experiences that improve people's daily lives.

To get the new Google experience on the iPhone, users simply navigate to www.google.com on the iPhone Safari browser. To see the full range of mobile products and services available from Google, visit mobile.google.com. If you'd like to learn more about today's announcement, Google's mobile initiatives or if you need screenshots, just let us know. And if you're at Macworld please stop by our booth (number 1268 in the South hall) for a live demo! We'll be there at 11:30 am on Tuesday and 10:30 am on the other days.

iPhone v1.1.2 finally gets hardware unlocked - yea, great

iPhone v1.1.2 firmware hardware unlocked by GeoHotIt almost seemed that the iPhone-hacking community had given up on trying to unlock the iPhone v1.1.2 firmware. With the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware already fully ensconced in the iPhone-wild, unlocking a previous firmware is kind of a moot endeavor. “Kind of” being the operative phrase here.

We’re sure there are plenty of unlocked-iPhone users out there that are dying to rock an unlocked version of the v1.1.2 firmware. After all, the bump up from v1.1.1 to v1.1.2 does offer some benefits - nothing like what v1.1.3 offers over v1.1.2, but it’s still nice to get a few added features.

Remember that bushy-haired, college-bound geek that posted the first iPhone-unlocking hack? Well, George Hotz, better known in the iPhone development/hacking community as GeoHot, is back on the iPhone unlocking-tip. The college freshman has announced a new hardware-unlock method for opening up the baseband radio on iPhones with v1.1.2 firmwares. The hack requires a hardware-based downgrade of the bootloader from v4.6 down to v3.9, followed by some AnySIM magic.

GeoHot has posted the fairly advanced unlock-instructions on his website. Please understand, there is a significant risk of ending up with an iBrick. So, unless you really know what you’re doing, we’d hold off for a software-based unlock solution.

And, speaking of a software unlock method, we hear there’s one currently in development. So, if we were you, we’d hold off on any hardware-hacking.

Oh, and we’re going to guess that the Nissan 350z, that George Hotz got for free, didn’t really do anything for the kid’s college social life. After all, he did have the time to do what no one else in the iPhone hacking community has managed…again.

Find the hardware-unlock instructions here.

iPhone v1.1.3 supports Gmail IMAPSo, there’s yet another lesser-known feature of the new iPhone v1.1.3 firmware that we overlooked previously. We have already switched our Gmail account to IMAP, and configured our iPhone’s Gmail account accordingly, so we didn’t really notice any difference. But, to any iPhone v1.1.3 users that haven’t made the switch to Gmail’s IMAP service, you may have noticed that the Gmail email account is automatically setup as an IMAP profile.

Be forewarned, IMAP email accounts work differently from POP3 accounts. Any changes, including deletions, will be reflected on the server. If you move an email from one inbox to another, you will be moving that email on the server-side as well. If you delete and email, you will be deleting that email on the Gmail server.

Get the picture? Changes to your iPhone’s email inbox are no longer isolated from the server. Be careful what you delete, because they may just be deleted forever.

Lotus Notes eMail coming to iPhone?

iPhone to get Lotus Notes eMailWith AT&T rumored to be bringing the iPhone to its corporate and business customers, we speculated that AT&T and Apple would roll-out some enterprise-class email support. Namely, we had looked for the iPhone duo to introduce native support for Microsoft’s Exchange Server, which would open up a world of Outlook Server-tethered businesspeople.

Well, we haven’t heard anything about AT&T or Apple bringing Microsoft Exchange support to the iPhone, but we are hearing that IBM’s Lotus Notes eMail could be released for the iPhone and iPod Touch as soon as January 20 - which roughly coincides with the iPhone’s rumored launch on corporate and business accounts. A Lotus Notes eMail application on the iPhone would be the first-ever software suite developed on Apple’s official iPhone SDK.

An IBM spokesperson stated that Apple and IBM have “a lot in common. We’re going to cross-pollinate.” Sounds to us like a sly confirmation of an iPhone-bound Lotus Notes eMail platform.

Business Email on iPod

You can now access your business email on your iPod touch thanks to Intermedia who will be hosting Exchange customers, enabling them to access their business email via secure IMAP. Just make sure your iPod touch is up-to-date in the first place. Guess business executives now have another excuse to badger their bosses to purchase a bunch of iPod touch (or is it iPod touches?) for them to stay updated on the road at all times.

AT&T prepping to bring iPhone to corporate and business customers - Apple iPhone goes enterprise on Jan. 21

Microsoft Exchange Outlook Server on the iPhone - AT&T bringing iPhone to corporate and business customersThe enterprise market is a huge money-maker for carriers and manufacturers alike. Just take a look at the leading smartphone platform in the US. The RIM-made BlackBerry platform is the push-emailing, Outlook server compatible, enterprise-handset of choice among the corporate-set. Sure, the iPhone has already taken the second-highest market share in the smartphone segment, but cracking the mainstream corporate market would drive up market like mad.

There are already many businessmen and businesswomen (or is it businesspeople? Political correctness, bah) bugging their IT departments to support the iPhone, and there are even enterprise iPhone users that don’t even care that their IT departments are lagging on iPhone support. Well, it seems that AT&T is getting set to officially give the iPhone some corporate-love.

One of BGR’s tipsters have indicated that, come January 21, AT&T will be offering the iPhone to its corporate and business customers. All discounts associated with corporate and business accounts will still be valid - although there may be special iPhone data plans of $25 and higher that will be require mandatory subscription. Corporate and business customers looking to bring the iPhone into their enterprise environment will have to undergo a special pre-activation process before activating the iPhone through iTunes.

Now, it’s unclear whether or not the iPhone’s entry into the AT&T’s official corporate stable marks Apple and AT&T’s intent to bring Microsoft Outlook Exchange support to the iPhone. Contrary to what the image above (from BGR) might lead you to believe, there is no native support for MS Exchange on the iPhone. But, we sure hope the US iPhone duo is working to bring Outlook server integration to the iPhone - that would just make our year month week.

iPhone v1.1.3 firmware restores previously bricked iPhones - iBricks rise from the dead

Bricked iPhone restored repaired revived fixed iBrick with v1.1.3 firmware updateWere you foolhardy, adventurous, or otherwise unlucky enough to attempt to update an unlocked iPhone, resulting in its untimely demise? Have you been staring at you iBrick with longing regret for a functioning iPhone?

Well, today’s your day! It seems that Apple’s new iPhone v1.1.3 firmware is able to breathe new life into your bricked, non-functional iPhone. The firmware update apparently overwrites enough firmware-code to revive that iBrick of yours.

TUAW and Gizmodo has confirmed that a restore and subsequent update (to the new iPhone v1.1.3 firmware, of course) of their bricked iPhone has resulted in a functional device - able to acquire signals and send/receive calls.

The restore/update procedure must apparently be followed by an iTunes-based activation. The iPhone needs to be activated on to an existing AT&T account. Simply inserting a valid SIM card doesn’t seem to do the trick.

So if you’ve been hoping to one day wake your bricked iPhone from its persistent vegetative state, go restore/update it post haste.

Hit up Gizmodo for some video-proof.

iPhone gets WindowSeat

iPhone gets WindowSeat

Looks like Apple's announcement of its mapping service for the iPhone was the perfect time to launch Griffin's WindowSeat that mounts onto your vehicle's windshield at eye level, enabling you to check street maps and directions wherever you go. A corner-release tab makes it a snap to remove your device whenever you arrive at your destination so you don't have to spend five minutes fumbling with it. The WindowSeat will be released this March for $19.99 a pop. As for its GPS capabilities, I would stick to a true blue GPS navigation device for the most accurate results possible.

Looks like Lotus Notes will soon hold the honor of being the first official iPhone third party application, with folks at IBM saying that "we have a lot in common [with Apple]. We're going to cross-pollinate." The inclusion of Lotus Notes and Lotus Symphony would definitely make the Mac more of a threat to Microsoft Office, and with the iPhone picking up all this productivity software, it can finally rest easy the next time someone refers to it as being a smartphone. Word on the street has it that a formal announcement is in the works really soon.

Google gives better iPhone experience

Google gives better iPhone experience

iPhone owners will benefit more from Google's move to introduce a new version that integrates more of their offerings into the phenomenally popular iPhone. Google's services will now be accessibly directly via the Safari Web Browser on Google's home page, instead of taking the older route of using special versions of Google Search, Gmail, Calendar and Reader among others. In addition, Google has streamlined the interface further for greater speed and usability. How will these improvements stack up against Google's Android interface that will probably roll out later this year? As usual, only time will tell. The curious can always head down to the Macworld Expo in San Francisco to get a feel on how Google's better integration with the iPhone is like.

Apple still in talks with China Mobile over iPhone?

What is this? One side of the story claims that negotiations are dead, the other side says that the “rumors” of iPhone-talk breakdowns are just not true.

Steve Jobs told CNBC’s Jim Goldman that Apple is still very interested in bringing the iPhone to China (of course they are, China’s population is huge!), and that rumors of rocky negotiations are just false. Apparently, the extent of Apple and China Mobile’s iPhone-related talks has been limited to a single visit from a lowly China Mobile representative - a marked departure from reports of struggling, ongoing talks.

China Mobile and China Unicom still vying for Apple iPhone?

We’ll have to wait and see what happens in China. With China Mobile and China Unicom both being courted by Cupertino, we’ll most likely see a Chinese iPhone soon.

Steve Jobs Denies That Chine iPhone Talks Halted

Recently, there was news that the talks between China Mobile and Apple had stopped. It is unlikely that anyone thought that the deal was cancelled altogether, but that it was a “pause” because both parties could not reach an agreement.

Anyhow, Steve jobs confirmed that negotiations are still going on and that Apple is still interested. Apple surely is and Mobile China is also very interested, but it feels that it has the upper-hand in the negotiations. Unlike wireless carriers in the west who stomp each other to get Apple’s phone, I imagine that China mobile saying: “How badly do you want my 350M customers?”

PumpOne launches iPhone-specific workout-video website - Pump 10

iPhone website Pump 10 brings workout videos to your iPhoneThe iPhone and PumpOne, makers of downloadable workout videos for all Apple devices, are ready to pump you up! PumpOne has launched an iPhone-tailored website to bring personal trainer-style workout videos to your iPhone. If you’ve gotten a little soft over the holiday season and need some geeky motivation to get your workout-on, what better way than to workout with your iPhone?

Pump 10 has been optimized for the iPhone and pushes workout videos to your iPhone in much the same way as the YouTube application does. The workout videos are available for free and a new one will pop up every week.

The one drawback is that you won’t be able to listen to music on your iPhone while you workout. Oh, and you’ll also have to deal with manipulating your iPhone during your workout. Other than that, though, we could definitely see ourselves being led through a workout by a hot personal-trainer on our iPhone.

ReQall goes iPhone

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

ReQall goes iPhoneI don’t know have you got a chance to try ReQall, but it’s a neat web-based note taking application/service, which relies on multiple methods of input — SMS and voice included — to record your thoughts. Some things like images require direct uploading to ReQall, but once your notes are online, you can access them from ReQall’s website, iGoogle, RSS, and of course through your mobile phone’s web browser. And now, they’ve included iPhone/iPod Touch in the mix, allowing mentioned Apple products’ owners to check their notes wherever they are. Kinda neat, especially the part where you call the specified number and freely speak your thoughts which are afterwards transformed into written words. Now that I’m thinking, Jott does the similar thing…

Anyway, if you’re attending MacWorld these days, you’ll be able to see ReQall in action. Their booth number is S-1338-44.

Apple to announce iPhone?s debut in Canada later today?

Apple to announce iPhone debut in Canada later today?

After hearing a few rumors about the iPhone’s debut in Canada in the past, today we may have some real information from the man himself. According to Bloomberg, Jobs&Co will announce a partnership with Canada’s Rogers Wireless, the country’s largest mobile service provider, and bring iPhone to its brothers and sisters on the North.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsk said “There’s a very good chance that Apple will announce or discuss some kind of other carrier roll-outs, beyond the ones it has done in Europe and the U.S.” Yeah sure, the only problem is that we’ve heard this all before. Besides, with the population of roughly 33 million people, Canada may not look that attractive to the Jobs’ grand plans. Why not go Spain or Japan instead? Still, Canada a respectable market and we’re honestly hope there’s some truth in Mike’s words.

New iPhone firmware now official - iPhone v1.1.3 with enhanced Google Maps Locate Me, SMS, Web Clips, homescreen customization and more

iPhone v1.1.3 with enhanced Google Maps Locate Me, multiple contact SMS text messages, web clipsSteve’s announcement of global iPhone sales wasn’t the only thing that caught our ear this morning. Remember that iPhone v1.1.3 firmware that was leaked a little while back? Well, it looks like Apple has gone official with the new firmware, complete with an enhanced Google Maps (Locate Me), support for multiple-contact SMS text messages, web-clips (more on that in a second), and chapter navigation and language options while viewing videos.

Keep reading to find out more about the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware features, and there’s a video to boot!

Google Maps “Locate Me”

We’ve been eager to get that faux-GPS “Locate Me” feature integrated into the iPhone’s Google Maps application, and it’s finally here! With the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware, you’ll see a new set of navigation options.

The lower right corner now bears a little “eye-ball” button that “curls” the map to reveal navigation and view options. Notice the new “Hybrid” view option!

iPhone v1.1.3 with enhanced Google Maps Locate Me, multiple contact SMS text messages, web clips

The lower left corner of the Google Maps screen shows the new “Locate Me” button. Google has integrated WiFi hotspot location and cell-tower triangulation into the v1.1.3 version of the iPhone’s Google Maps application, and a simple press of the “Locate Me” button calculates your approximate position in faux-GPS style and displays it on the map.

iPhone v1.1.3 with enhanced Google Maps Locate Me, multiple contact SMS text messages, web clips

Web-clips

Now, web-clips is all about saving whatever webpage you’re viewing in Mobile Safari and placing a shortcut to that web-page on your iPhone homescreen. The icon will display a thumbnail-image of whatever portion of the web-page you are zoomed-in on. If you aren’t zoomed-in to a particular portion of the page, the web-clip icon will display an image of the entire webpage.

Mobile Safari now sports a little “+” button that lets you save your current web-page view as a web-clip icon.

iPhone v1.1.3 features web-clips

This is what a web-clips icon looks like:

iPhone v1.1.3 features web-clips

Homescreen customization

As expected from the v1.1.3 leak, iPhone homescreen icons can now be customized. Holding down on a homescreen icon will cause the icons to start “wobbling,” indicating that they are ready to be moved around and swapped as dock-icons. The image doesn’t really show how this “wobbly” effect works, so hit the vid at the end of this post to get a better idea for how homescreen-customization works.

Notice the native support for homescreen-pagination (the homescreen now supports multiple pages of icons, indicated by the little white dots at the bottom of the homescreen - access subsequent pages by “sliding” the homescreen to the side)!

iPhone v1.1.3 firmware with homescreen customization

Multiple-contact SMS text message support

There’s just something extremely annoying about having to type out individual SMS text messages for each contact. The new iPhone v1.1.3 firmware features multiple-contact support. The SMS text message application now features a small “+” button next to the “Contacts” field, allowing you to add multiple contacts to a particular SMS text message.

iPhone v1.1.3 with multiple-contact SMS text message support

iTunes movie rentals and movie chapter navigation

Now, along with all the other aforementioned features, iTunes has been updated to support iTunes movie rentals. It works just like you’d expect, and rented movies sync in the same manner as photos or videos. Additionally, the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware also allows chapter-based navigation of movies.

iTunes movie rentals for the iPhone

As you can see, the movie-navigation bar now shows a chapter-navigation button. Hit the button and you will be shown a list of chapters from which to choose - handy indeed.

Apple, China Mobile call off iPhone launch talks

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and China Mobile have called off talks to launch the U.S. firm's popular iPhones in China, dashing investor speculation that the device will hit store shelves soon and sending China Mobile shares down.

Investors had cheered Apple possibly winning access to China Mobile's 350 million subscribers -- more than the population of the United States -- and news of talks over the device's potential launch in the world's largest telecoms market helped Apple's stock climb more than 10 percent on November 13.

Shares in China Mobile (0941.HK), the world's largest mobile phone operator, slid nearly 3 percent after Monday's announcement to HK$130.

Analysts had expected talks to fail at least initially, predicting that both parties would eventually lock horns over revenue sharing and a plethora of technical difficulties.

"It's not a surprise. China Mobile doesn't want to share its non-voice revenue," said Duncan Clark, chairman of BDA China, a Beijing-based telecoms research consultancy. "The two have very strong egos and, as in any relationship, that often doesn't work."

The iPhone, a cellphone that allows Internet access and plays music, sells for about $500 in the United States -- about double the average monthly salary in China.

Experts said last year the iPhone would have to navigate a spate of technical, content and fee issues unique to China, including a standard revenue-sharing agreement that China Mobile would be sure to dislike, before any launch could proceed.

The iPhone, one of the hottest gadgets to hit stores in the United States and Europe in 2007, might also be incompatible with China because of its "locked" SIM card. That meant it would not be able to piggyback another operator's network.

"Our parent has terminated talks with Apple over the iPhone," a China Mobile spokeswoman said, confirming several unsourced Internet reports.

RESURRECTION?

Lei would not elaborate except to say that China Mobile had not ruled out reviving discussions at some stage, if necessary.

It is unclear what Apple, which has declined to comment on the issue, planned to do in China next. Apple was not immediately available for comment.

China Unicom (0762.HK) (CHU.N), the smaller of the country's two wireless carriers, said in 2007 it had no plans to bring the device into the country, but was open to the idea.

Apart from China, Apple had also initiated talks with NTT DoCoMo Inc (9437.T) and Softbank Corp (9984.T) to bring its multimedia device to Japan, though sources at both firms said revenue-sharing was again a hotly contested issue.

Globally, Apple has chosen France Telecom's (FTE.PA) Orange, Deutsche Telekom's (DTEGn.DE) T-Mobile and Spanish Telefonica-owned (TEF.MC) O2 in Britain to bring the iPhone -- which combines Apple's iPod music player, a video player and a Web browser -- to Europe.

Chinese iPhone Talks Break-Off

Chinese iPhone Talks Break-Off

MacDailyNews has reported that the talks between Apple and China Mobile have not been going well. It would seem obvious that revenue sharing is at the heart of the problem and we can only imagine that China Mobile does not want to pay what AT&T is currently paying. Unfortunately for Apple, China Mobile is in an awesome negotiating position: they have 350M customers (or about 70% market share in China), which is probably 8x what any U.S carrier has.

Will Apple back down on its demands? Not for now. In the meantime, Chinese customers can enjoy countless iPhone clones.

Steve Jobs? Keynote Leaked: 16 GB iPhone, Japan launch, stealing 30% of devs profits with new SDK?

0110iphonebig.jpg

According to this leaked rough draft of Steve Jobs’ keynote to take place at MacWorld in less than 24 hours the 16 GB will launch for $500, Japan will get the iPhone with NTT DoCoMo and the SDK for the iPhone platform will be shown off. Two categories of programs can be available for users: applications and widgets. Applications can be priced from $0 to $7 with widgets being $0 to $3. Developers will have to submit their source code to Apple, who then has to validate it, before it gets added to a repository in iTunes. Apple gives developers 70% of the profits.

If I was a developer I would be horrified by the fact that I would be submitting my code to a company who can easily just steal my idea and integrate into a firmware update, but at the same time I love how applications and widgets are integrated into the iTunes experience. The hardest thing all the smartphone platforms have going for them right now is the discovery of third party applications. Taking the Linux approach and creating a single repository of all available applications is absolutely brilliant and I hope to see Nokia doing it for S60, Sony Ericsson and Motorola doing it for UIQ, Google doing it for Android and Microsoft doing it for Windows Mobile.

Other things we can expect is the integration of iChat in the 1.3 firmware, although no one in Europe uses AIM or Jabber. The 1.3 firmware is expected to be released in early February, just in time for the Mobile World Congress.

Just in case the Apple PR Nazi’s ask Pocket Lint to take down their content I’ve mirrored it, after the jump.

UPDATE: I don’t want to treat this as fact so I’m adding a question mark at the end of the title, we will find out in less than 24 hours if any of this nonsense is true.

We’re used to seeing the online tech world go crazy with rumours and speculation in the days before Macworld, but this year a new element has been introduced to the mix.

Steve Jobs’ keynote speech, that he is due to make on stage at the Moscone Centre in San Francicso on Tuesday 15th January, has apparently been leaked via Wikipedia.

With highlights including a 16GB iPhone, details of the SDK for the device, a 13-inch 0.8-inch thick redesigned MacBook and direct YouTube for Apple TV, it would not be a dull keynote if it’s all true.

In its entirety, if the sources are to be believed, here is what Monsieur Jobs is to cover during tomorrow’s time on stage:

iPhone web traffic to Google outpaces all other smartphones

iPhone traffic to Google surpasses all other smartphonesiPhone, Safari, web-browsing.

There’s not much that needs to be said about the iPhone’s web-surfing prowess. We’ve lauded the Apple phone’s web-browser time and time again, and it seems the iPhone-owning population is really putting it to work. The New York Times is reporting that iPhone web-traffic to Google has surpassed that from BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices. Moreover, iPhone-traffic to Google outpaced traffic from the Nokia-favorite Symbian platform on Chrismas. Is it any wonder that Google customized its iGoogle offering for iPhones?

Now, to put all that iPhone web-traffic into perspective - Windows Mobile devices hold 11% of global smartphone market share, BlackBerry boasts a 10% market share, while Symbian maintains a 63% strangle-hold on global market share. Just how did the iPhone, with its lowly 2% global market share (according to IDC), manage to outpace web-traffic from all other smartphone platforms? It’s the web-browser/multi-touch combo that we’ve been praising this whole time.

EDGE-smedge - even with a slow data connection, the web-browsing experience is un-paralleled on the iPhone. Bring on the 3G iPhone!

New GMAIL Interface for the iPhone

New GMAIL Interface for the iPhone

Google has update the user interface for Gmail by adding Ajax code to avoid page refreshes. Also, the auto-complete has been added. From the Google Gmail blog:

“We also implemented two of the coolest and most requested features for this release: pre-fetching and auto-complete. Now when you use Google on your iPhone, Gmail will automatically pre-load all your most recent messages for you. So when you decide to read a message it will be on your screen in a snap… “

“With auto-complete you can often get the right email address on your screen within 2-3 key strokes.”

Could this be what the iPhone Starbucks quick-order system will look

Sunday, January 13, 2008

By now it’s a fairly by-gone conclusion that Apple will be announcing their partnership with Starbucks to deliver an iPhone-based online quick-order system. The design-gurus in Cupertino have already filed for a patent application to that effect, and we’re all just waiting on Steve Jobs to drop the espresso-bomb on us next week at Macworld Expo.

So, just how would this iPhone-based Starbucks coffee-ordering system work? Well, designer Phil Lu drew up a few concept images to give us an idea. Keep in mind that all this concept work was done before the Apple patent application was made public.

Apple iPhone Starbucks quickorder system

The screenshots look pretty slick and we’d be more than happy to use this system to order our Double Venti Soy Decaf Latte.

When asked why he used a Semacode for purchase verification, Phil responded:

This concept was designed before the Apple patent is widely publicized. Similar to ordering song through the web via iTune account, Semacode works like a digital “receipt,” allowing the user to use their iTunes account for the transaction (which will bypass credit card transaction/identification, and speed up the pick-up process).

We should have more news next week.

Keep reading for more concept pics of the iPhone Starbucks quickorder system.

Bank of America goes mobile with iPhone specific website

Bank of America rolls out iPhone specific website - BofAWhat comes to mind when you think of any banking institution? We’d be willing to wager that the words “cutting edge” and “innovative” don’t exactly come to the forefront of your cerebrum.

Well, it looks like one of the nation’s largest banks, Bank of America, has gone and jumped into the “hip” end of the innovation-pool. BofA has rolled out an iPhone specific website to complement their recently-launched mobile banking platform. We’re not BofA customers, so we don’t have any first-hand knowledge of the new iPhone interface, but iPhone Central praises the new website for its iPhone integration (like getting to use the large numeric keypad on the iPhone to input a ZIP code, rather that the keyboard-based number keys).

It’s nice to see a stodgy institution like Bank of America getting with the times and actually rolling out a service that helps the customer, rather than just taking their money. Of course, the iPhone-interface makes it easier to give BofA your money, too.

If you’re a BofA customer with an iPhone, kindly hit up their new iPhone-specific website and let us know how you like it.

Cheap mp3 downloads to your mp3 player

Saturday, January 12, 2008

Recently I have been trying to search for cheap mp3 music to download from a website; it was really frustrating by the amount of useless links or lists produced from the search engine. Honestly I can't say all the websites I went through were useless or not exactly cheap mp3 music download websites, only a few rarely provide cheap mp3 music for download.

Seriously, if any one is really interested in searching for cheap mp3 music download websites, don't bother to search through the search engine. Whatever is the outcome of the results from the search engine, you can be sure that the top of the lists will not be cheap.

Well, it is not completely a hopeless thing to find some cheap mp3 music to download from a website. We have to go around the problem to search for cheap mp3 music to download.

MP3Sale is a music download service for those who want the latest music tracks for cheap and without any digital rights restrictions. Personally, I don’t like iTunes because it’s simply too restrictive with my music: songs can only be played on my computer or iPod.

MP3Sale has a cool retro-like website and really cheap prices - usually $0.10 per track. They accept credit cards as payment methods. The catalog is great; better than several other sites out there. This site seems to overall have the best combination of cheap prices and catalog size to date.

MP3Sale has an interesting price structure (or lack of it): usually tracks cost $0.10 - but occasionally they cost $0.12 or $0.13 as well. While that doesn't seem to correspond with file size (song length), it doesn't make much difference in the overall album price. Not only that, but sometimes you get a further discount if you purchase the whole album rather than single tracks; this album with 16 tracks should cost $1.60, but it only costs $0.99 if you purchase the entire album. Now that's a real good deal! It seems that many albums are priced this way. It turns out that when you are comparing album prices, this $0.99 per album deal is usually the cheapest you will find anywhere.

They accept major credit cards. All music tracks are DRM free and in MP3 format, which means you will have no issues when transferring your music to your iPod/CD/MP3 player/Windows Media Player/etc. Songs are usually encoded between 192kbps and higher (usually higher), but there isn't a consistent encoding rate for all albums. Downloading seems to be fast and easy.

Porn Industry Gives iPhone A ?Thumbs Up?

There’s a lot you can do with an iPhone and now there is even more. Adult content producers at the AVN show in Las Vegas.

“The phones are changing,” with real Web browsers, streaming video and high-quality graphics, said Kate Sylvan, marketing and PR coordinator for porn firm Pink Visual. That means phones are ready for porn ? and she says the iPhone is the best platform out there so far.

This week, Pink Visual launched the first major U.S.-based porn site designed especially for iPhones. iPinkVisual.com caters to iPhone owners, with streaming video trailers and catalogs; it’s more of a marketing tool than a direct content sales site, Sylvan said.

Lance Cassidy, director of marketing for user-generated porn site XTube.com, agrees that phone porn is coming soon. They’re working on a mobile phone site right now, he says, and the iPhone is the ideal platform. Meanwhile, some other porn providers are rethinking their next-generation DVD stance following the decision of Warner Bros. to drop support for HD DVD.

“You have to adapt to the format [for phones], but if your standard is the Apple iPhone, no adaptation is necessary,” he said.

So if you own an iPhone, porn will soon be just another content alternative for you - should you desire.

EA Mobile: iPhone is hurting mobile gaming industry

Thursday, January 10, 2008

iPhone gamingRight from the floor of CES, Macworld brings us an interesting story about Apple and how it hurts mobile gaming industry. According to EA Mobile’s VP of worldwide studios Travis Boatman, iPhone is “a replacement for someone who had a RAZR before. They still want their content but there’s no distribution platform in place so there’s a negative impact on the industry.”

And while we agree with you on this Trevis, you should be more patient man. The SDK is right around the corner and you’ll be able to get back all the money you’ve “lost” because Apple closed the platform. In the meantime, go make your team release something interesting. You can always port it later… ;)

Piggy iPod speaker with cool controls

Piggy iPod speaker with cool controls

[CES 2008] This porcine speaker works with your iPod and iPhone, and I must say it impressed me with the sound quality. While the design isn't exactly cute per se, the fact that Amethyst included a glowing mouth adds to the appeal of this speaker dock. Its ears feature an airflow optimized design that helps avoid distortion and resonance, although you can't really tell that on a noisy showroom floor. While it is already available in Europe (for $99 I might add), Amethyst is currently looking for distributors in North America. What's most interesting about this iPod speaker dock are its ears - rubbing the right ear lowers the volume while doing so for the left ear will increase it. Pretty neat use of touch sensitive technology! I suppose since this is Vegas, there would probably be 'adult' versions of iPod speakers using similar technology although that would be another can of worms altogether ;)

First iPhone trojan discovered - 2008 kicks off with first iPhone malware

iPhone Trojan discovered through Installer.appIt was predicted to happen. The New Year was supposed to usher in a new wave of evil iPhone coders, and it looks like an 11-year old kid decided to kick off the new year with his very own piece of iPhone malware. The iPhone Trojan sneaks in through jailbroken iPhones’ Installer.app and starts deleting files from your iPhone’s /var/root/bin directory upon uninstallation.

Beware any Installer.app posing as “113 prep,” an update to “Erica’s Utilities.” Apparently, all the app does is display the prompt “shoes” and nothing else. And, as we just mentioned, it deletes system files when you try to uninstall the little bugger.

Just like an 11-year old to create a piece of malware that does little more than annoy the hell out of you. Shouldn’t he be watching “Dora the Explorer” DVDs or something?

We should consider ourselves lucky that the first malware for the iPhone isn’t any worse. This little trojan just shows all iPhone users to stay wary of unknown applications that you install through the popular Installer.app application. The next piece of malware may come from a more skilled code-writer hell-bent on messin’ with iPhone owners.

iPhone owner denied service from Apple for using custom non-iTunes ringtone

Apple iPhone at Apple Store gets denied service for We already knew that any iPhone needing warranty or repair service from Apple should be restored to its factory state before giving it some hands-on time with an Apple “Genius.” We’re going to keep using putting “Genius” in quotes because we definitely don’t think they’re anything more than hired monkeys. Anyway, we digress.

Doug Rodriguez reportedly went in for warranty service with his factory-locked, non-jailbroken iPhone. He was summarily denied. His only wrong move? Installing a custom iPhone ringtone through a process that bypasses the iTunes ringtone installer. He used the little “renaming” trick that allows anyone to install ringtones onto their iPhone by tricking iTunes into thinking that the custom ringtone-file was created by iTunes itself.

Rodriguez’s iPhone started displaying the dreaded “Invalid SIM” message after a routine system-restart. He left his iPhone with Apple for service, and after a few days received word that they would not honor the iPhone warranty. Says Apple, “(we have) determined that (the iPhone) has been subjected to accidental damage or misuse, which is not covered by the warranty or an Apple service contract.”

Doug says that, “I?ve never dropped my iPhone, I?ve never exposed it to water. I?ve never put third-party apps on it or hacked it. It just stopped working and Apple apparently does not believe me,? adding ?The ?product specialist? told me over the phone that it was determined that unauthorized software was installed on my iPhone and that?s why I?ve been getting the ?Invalid SIM? message. The only thing I?ve ever done is back in September putting one custom ringtone on my iPhone via the ?manual transfer? method. Nothing Else.”

The lesson? Always RESTORE your iPhone before taking it in for Apple-service. Unless you’d rather pay for the repairs out-of-pocket…

X-SIM II for iPhone

All new iPhones being sold in the US, UK & Germany are locked to a particular provider (Version 1.1.2, Bootloader 4.6)

If you wish to use the iPhone with another provider in that country or in another country, you will need the X-Sim II to ypass the lock to work with your exising sim card. In Canada, it will work with Rogers & Fido Networks.

Also works with: at&t, T-Mobile, Vodaphone, ORANGE, Mobile , o2, Tesco, CosmOTE, Tim & Virgin.

And please alert that that's not the exact solution of unlocking the phone, it's BY- PASS the SIM checking of the phone. For example, there is an locked AT &
T iphone, and of course, else of AT & T SIM card, the phone cannot work on any card else. So, when the user want to use the own card, it needs to put the own card into that X-SIM II card slot, then, put to the iphone. When iphone detect the
card, that X-SIM II would BY-PASS the checking to determine if there is AT & T or not, then, the iphone would still work with the user's own card.

So, the conclusion is that the iphone is not really unlocked, it just BY-PASS the SIM checking & let the iphone to work on any SIM card. Just Jailbreak the iPhone, update it, Jailbreak it again, insert your Sim card together with the X-Sim II, & you phone features will work on your iPhone. Very simple to do & you can not damage your phone!!! X-Sim II requires no modification of the basebandon your phone.

[CES 2008] The Q-Cute MP3 player ain't for serious geek types, but they make pretty interesting gifts for kids and the young-at-heart. It comes in the form of a cartoony animal, complete with a backpack that actually stores the pair of headphones. There's a wide variety of animal styles to choose from (monkey, white bear, pig, hare, dog, etc), and each of them carry 1GB of memory for all your MP3, WMA and WAV files. Data is transferred via a USB 2.0 connection which is located on the animal's rear end (you can view that in our photo gallery). I would like to see future iterations of this device come with Bluetooth or wireless headphones, but then again that might do a number on your battery life. The Q-Cute MP3 player will retail for $40 when it hits the market.

France?s Orange reports 70,000 iPhones sold in first month

Orange sells 70,000 iPhonesNow before you get all crazy with talk about how many handsets your favorite manufacturer sells worldwide every day, or how crappy the iPhone is, or how much you like 3G (check out our 3G shootout, by the way), just remember that the iPhone is Apple very first foray into the mobile phone market. So, with that out of the way, let?s get to the point.

France?s Orange network has just reported that they?ve moved 70,000 iPhones out their doors in the first month of sales. That works out to roughly 2,333 iPhones sold every day through Orange. If you?ll remember, Apple?s French iPhone-partner reported sales numbers of about 40,000 iPhone in the first five days of sales ? which works out to about 8,000 iPhones per day.

Now, on the one hand, 70,000 units is not a bad number to play with. On the other hand, Apple and Orange saw sales-rates drop by more than 70%.

So, is the iPhone a hot seller worldwide? Is it the disappointment that soo many out there are hoping for? Stay tuned, Stevie will be dropping the sales-number-bomb on us in less than a couple weeks.

Orange France Sells 70,000 Iphones in December

France Telecom says that it's mobile arm, Orange sold over 70,000 Apple iPhones during the month of December, which was in line with projections of sales of between 50,000 to 100,000 units. The handset was launched into the French market at the end of November.

The figure conceals a downward trend though, as the bulk of the sales - some 30,000 units - were sold in just the first five days of launch. Considering that December was the peak gift purchasing time, it seems that the iPhone may not be as appealing to the those who are not hardcore Apple fans.

According to an AFP newswire report, nearly half (48%) of the sales were to new subscribers to the Orange network and less than 3,500 handsets were formally purchased unlocked, although doubtless a fair percentage of locked phones were later unlocked.

NEW AUDIO SYSTEMS OFFER MORE WAYS TO CONNECT TO BLUETOOTH AND iPOD IN THE HOME, PLUS THE ABILITY TO CONVERT CASSETTE LIBRARIES TO MP3

Monday, January 07, 2008

LAS VEGAS(CES Booth # 14200), Jan. 6, 2008 ? Sony today introduced its first made- for-iPod line of shelf systems with a wide range of connectivity options, powerful sound and eye-catching designs.

The new systems also integrate Bluetooth technology and even digitize old media into MP3 files without the need for a PC.

?We are continuing to evolve our shelf system offerings to reflect consumer listening habits,? said Andrew Sivori, director of personal audio marketing in the Digital Audio and Imaging Division at Sony Electronics. ?With the addition of iPod docks to most models, along with a bolder, more dramatic offering in our Muteki line, there?s a Sony shelf system for just about everyone.?

Works with iPod

Marking a first for Sony, the company unveiled two micro shelf systems made for iPod, the CMT-BX20i and CMT-BX50BTi models. These new music systems offer a sleek and simple design with a glossy black finish and vivid florescent display. The iPod menu and system features can be accessed with the remote control, while the system charges the device.

The CMT-BX20i system has a front-loading single disc CD player and supports CD-R, CD-RW and MP3 Playback, along with an audio-in jack to connect your digital music player or PC. This new system also reads ID3 tags, displaying the artist and album information. The bass reflex speaker system is powered by 50 watts (RMS) of total system output for full and vibrant sound.

The Dynamic Sound Generator X-tra (DSGX) selectively improves the bass and treble segments of the music to produce a natural sound effect without distortion. An AM/FM tuner with 30 station presets and remote control add convenience to complete the package. The CMT-BX20i micro shelf system will be available in February for about $130.

The line?s most feature-rich system, the CMT-BX50BTi unit has all the functions of the CMT-BX20i system, plus Bluetooth Stereo (A2DP) technology so you can wirelessly stream CD-quality music to other Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) devices, such as Bluetooth stereo-enabled headphones, PCs, digital music players and cell phones. This means that you can move from the car to the home or office, and your Bluetooth-enabled devices can sync up effortlessly while your music never skips a beat.

The CMT-BX50BTi system plays both CDs and digital music from wired or wireless compatible devices. Information like the album title, artist name and track number appear on the florescent display through the wireless connection. This model will be available in February for about $180.

Charge, Play, Control

For digital music enthusiasts looking for powerful sound and features, the new EC series of mini HiFi systems offers a new finish and sleek design. These new music systems are also made to work with iPod devices, and will charge, play and control your device ? even through the included remote control. The Digital Media Port? provides the ability to connect four optional accessories, such as a Walkman video MP3 player, a Bluetooth-enabled device, a WiFi streaming audio system and the included dock made for an iPod.

A front-loading single disc CD player supports CD-R, CD-RW and MP3 playback with an audio-in to connect your digital music player or PC, plus AM/FM tuner with 30 station presets.

The MHC-EC98Pi mini HiFi system is the high-end unit of the series with a total system power output of 530 watts (RMS) and a three-way bass reflex speaker system with an 8-inch subwoofer, two 5.1-inch woofers and a 1.6-inch horn tweeter to fill nearly any room with music. It will be available in May for about $200.

The MHC-EC78Pi mini system has a total system power output of 380 watts (RMS) and a three-way bass reflex speaker system with two 5.1-inch woofers and a 1.6-inch horn tweeter. It will also be available in May for about $150.

The MHC-EC68Pi mini system has a total system power output of 140 watts (RMS) and a two-way bass reflex speaker system with a 6.3-inch woofer and 1.6-inch horn tweeter. It will be available in April for around $130.

The Ultimate Party Machine

Sony is also introducing the LBT-ZUX9 system, the latest addition to its Muteki? (pronounced ?moo-techy?) line of audio shelf systems. The new system is ideal for getting any party started. It delivers rich, strong sound with a two-way bass reflex speaker system, and four speakers that each include 8-inch subwoofers and a 1-inch horn tweeter. Total system power output is 1000 watts (RMS) and features matrix line array speakers to fill nearly any room with music.

The three-disc CD changer supports CD-R, CD-RW and MP3 playback, and includes a dual cassette tape deck. Perhaps the most unique feature is the USB recording and playback function, which allows the user to record music from CD, cassette and directly from the radio onto a flash drive. This two-way USB functionality helps convert old cassette libraries to MP3 files without the use of a PC.

The LBT-ZUX9 shelf system also offers built-in lighting effects with beams that react to bass and treble, in addition to the D-Light Sync? Pro port that connects to optional party lighting like disco balls via a D-Light Sync Controller (sold separately).

Sony?s X-Trance technology allows you to create a party atmosphere through various sound effects, including flangers, delays, chorus and others. With the beat blend feature you can add drum percussion during playback to any source via the dedicated drum pads. A florescent display and remote control make all these features easy to enjoy. The LBT-ZUX9 shelf system will be available in February for about $800.

Can Navizon survive Google?s location mapping in iPhone v1.1.3?

Navizon will stay competitive with Google My LocationAs the iPhone gets more and more comfortable with itself as the “gotta-have” gadget of 2007, nay 2008, the Apple handset just keeps getting better with time. Firmware upon firmware, the iPhone keeps adding more usability and functionality at the click of a (”Sync”) button.

The next iPhone firmware release, previously rumored and now widely documented as the v1.1.3 firmware version, touts Google’s new location-based “My Location” mapping feature built into the Google Maps application. There are other cool features included in the v1.1.3 firmware, but we’re just going to talk about the location-mapping aspect of Google Maps.

Until now, the only way to get cell-tower triangulated positional data (we like to call it faux-GPS) on your iPhone was through a third party application called Navizon. The application is incredibly handy and was recently updated to give directions from your current (approximate) location and keep in touch with friends (the “Buddy” feature). And, in the face of Google’s recent “My Location” announcement, Navizon launched a “Lite” (read: free) version to keep up. Well, now that the new Google “My Location” feature is ready to prime-time with the next iPhone update, we have to wonder what Navizon is doing to keep up.

So, we went to our little birdie to get more info on what to expect from Navizon in the future and it looks promising.

Navizon already offers (for free) the same type of cell-tower triangulation technology upon which Google?s ?My Location? features relies. But, if you need even more accuracy (close to that of GPS positioning) Navizon offers a premium upgrade that leverages WiFi hotspot-positioning to help you get an even more accurate location-information.

But, that?s not all. We can?t exactly tell you what (at least not yet), but Navizon will be offering even more unique and exciting features in the near future. Fear not, Navizon fans, Google?s ?My Location? (likely) integration in the next iPhone firmware update will not be the end of your favorite little location-information application.

Keep an eye out for more Navizon updates soon!

Next iPhone software update to allow copy-paste

Apple will release an iPhone software update during MacWorld Expo 2008, well informed sources confirmed MacScoop. But it appears that the unpolished iPhone sofware version recently leaked on the Internet doesn't include all the features of the final release.

The reports we obtained claim that the software update will add copy-paste, which is one of the most requested features by iPhone users, and will provide a few other user interface improvements.

Additionally, the update should provide better stability and performance for the device which sometimes suffers from UI glitches and application hangs in its current version.

Sources also confirmed recent reports claiming that a soon to be released iPhone software update will offer very improved Google Maps with localization and hybrid view, mass SMS sending and multi-page editable home screen.

It is not out of question that other, non revealed yet features, appear with this update, our sources said. Be sure that we'lll keep you updated in case we obtain more information.

iPod nano clone gets Click Wheel

Looks like the iPod nano (2nd gen) has not yet broken the shackles of piracy as Chinese manufacturers have managed to clone it yet again, and this time featuring an actual Click Wheel clone as well! The user interface also looks more polished, although you shouldn't expect anything of Cupertino's standard. When will the third generation iPod nano receive the clone treatment, fake Click Wheel and all? It is only a matter of time I guess.

Nokia 5610, 5700, iPhone clones and more?

Here is a round up of the latest phone/clones/ripoffs from China.

The first one we have here is a Nokia 5700 clone. Here are the specs:
- 3 inch QVGA 16 million color touschscreen
- powerful speakers with bass
- FM radio
- microSD support
- 2 mega pixel camera
- A2DP
- built in TV (with extendible camera)
- measures 114x55x16 mm
- weighs 125 grams

Here is the latest iPhone clone. It is actually not bad. It doesn't have unnecessary markings and printings on the phone. Here are the specs:
- 3 inch 16 million color 240x400 touchscreen
- triband support
- VGA camera
- microSD support
- A2DP
- measures 110x53x13 mm
- weighs 93 grams

Here we have yet another Nokia clone. This time it's a clone of the Nokia 5610. It actually also looks like the 5300 also. I like that large screen. Here are the specs:
- built in TV tuner
- 3 inch 16 million color QVGA touchscreen
- FM radio
- 1.3 mega pixel camera
- microSD support
- A2DP
- measures 100x52x22 mm
- weighs 135 grams

Here we have quite an unusual phone. It has many special features. The pics explain everything. Here are the specs:
- 2.6 inch 260K QVGA camera
- 1.3 mega pixel camera with large lens and strong flash
- FM radio with dedicated controls on the back (including media player)
- powerful stereo 3D speakers with sub woofer
- microSD support
- measures 106x46x13 mm (super thin)
- weighs 85 grams
- comes with a carrying case that also doubles as a battery

This last phone is a full QWERTY phone powered by Windows Mobile 5. This is one of the best QWERTY phones I have seen from China. It has a brushed metal look. It's a pity that Windows Mobile is plastered below the screen (it really spoils the look). Here are the specs:
- 2.6 inch 65K color QVGA landscape oriented screen
- 1.3 mega pixel camera
- triband support
- microSD support
- Windows Mobile 5
- A2DP
- 64 MB RAM/64 MB ROM
- 200MHZ CPU
- measures 120x62x17 mm
- weighs 120 grams
- comes with powerful 2200 mAh battery
- dual sim card slots
