iPhone Bike Mount
Wednesday, April 30, 2008

The iPhone Bike Mount isn't something that I'd want to see on our roads - after all, won't it be a major distraction to cyclists as they zip down the asphalt while watching their favorite movie? Hopefully they won't be so clueless to do so, but if you're one who throws caution to the wind, the iPhone Bike Mount retails for $14.99. Not to mention having your iPhone hanging out there makes it vulnerable to the harsh elements, which might make you panic once it starts to rain.

3G iPhone to get $200 subsidy from AT&T?
Writing for Fortune, ex-The Street writer Moritz cites industry sources in speculating that AT&T may be subsidizing the next-generation 3G iPhone to the tune of $199. The price subsidy would help cut the expected $399 and $499 (for the 8GB and 16GB variants, respectively) price tags to a more easily swallowed $199 and $299.
AT&T is preparing to subsidize $200 of the cost of a new iPhone, bringing the price down to $199 for customers who sign two-year contracts, the source says. Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory and a 16-gigabyte-memory model with price tags widely expected to be $399 and $499.
Apple has previously prohibited iPhone carriers from subsidizing the iPhone, and has even required that carriers kick-back a portion of iPhone-generated monthly revenue to Cupertino. But, recent moves to clear out iPhone inventories have seen Apple allowing iPhone carriers in the UK and Germany to subsidize the current iPhone's selling price. Futhermore, rumors are swirling that the next-generation iPhone will hit certain carriers unlocked and without contract - hinting that Apple is considering a radical change to their current iPhone business model.
Apple's newly relaxed stance on the iPhone-carrier relationship bodes well for the prospect of seeing an AT&T subsidy on the 3G iPhone. But, Moritz's mention that the next-gen iPhone will sport a 9.2mm thick casing (2.5mm thinner than the current iPhone) while still managing to pack in a 3G radio and GPS receiver, goes against other speculation (from more reliable sources) that the 3G iPhone will actually be thicker. It should be noted that the possibility of a thinner iPhone variant has been thrown into the mix, but the smaller iPhone would exclude the GPS hardware. Is Moritz and his source simply confused on which iPhone rumor to spin off from?
We're not going to hold out breath on this one - mostly because the speculation comes from unreliable rumor-monger Scott Moritz.
Still, the "source" says that the 3G iPhone will be launched on or around June 27 to coincide roughly with the one-year anniversary of the iPhone's initial global launch in the US. So, we'll just have to wait and see which portions, of this latest rumor pans out.

New iPhone rumor points to smaller iPhone
Is Apple planning on a smaller variant to its iconic iPhone? According to Taiwan Economic News, sources in the supply chain are indicating that a lighter-weight and smaller variant of the iPhone is in the pipeline. Weighing in at 110-120g, compared to the current iPhone's 158g weight, the smaller iPhone is said to forgo the aluminum-magnesium casing in favor of a lighter plastic casing. Helping to shave weight, the smaller iPhone is also rumored to sport a 2.8-inch multi-touch display in place of the current iPhone's 3.5-inch multi-touch display.
The new report comes in contradiction to other rumors that Apple's next-generation 3G iPhone would add heft and bulk to accommodate a built-in GPS receiver. But, that doesn't mean both rumors can't pan out. There are indications that Apple is planning to silence criticism about the company's one-trick-pony iPhone offering by launching different iPhone variants to suit different needs. The highest-end iPhone would be the 3G iPhone sporting true GPS, with a possibility of the current generation iPhone (or something quite similar) locking down the mid-range, while a pared-down version of the iPhone would offer bare-bones iPhone goodness in the lower-end.
We'll have to wait and see just how Apple plans to play this one out. Keep in mind, Apple likes to confuse speculators by commissioning purposely misleading hardware prototypes.
For me, I'd rather keep the bulk down by nixing the GPS hardware. If Apple offers 3G iPhone variants with GPS and without, I'll probably be going for the GPS-less model.
Who am I kidding, it's going to be hard to stop myself from going with the top-of-the-line model. Anyone out there actually think that a 3G iPhone with GPS is unnecessary?

iPhone Solar Star Edition from Goldstriker

Goldstriker definitely knows how to beautify the iPhone as well as a plethora of other gadgets, and the Solar Star edition is their latest attempt. Featured on both the front bezel and Apple's rear logo are 24 carat gold plating, while the rest of the case has the luxurious Balloon White paint found on a Lamborghini Gallardo. This white-and-gold color scheme is pleasant to the eye and looks good to the touch, and comes with updated firmware 1.1.4 as well as is unlocked for worldwide GSM use. You get 16GB of flash memory inside, but the £749.95 ($1,477) price tag will definitely put most people off. I'd rather save that dough for a 3G iPhone, and Apple's original design isn't bad to begin with but this over-blinged version isn't suitable in this day and age where consumers' pockets are being squeezed even for the basic necessities in life.

Canadians finally to get the iPhone via Rogers
Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Apple has finally managed to agree with Rogers Wireless to push the sales of its flagship handset to Canada. We talked about this on and on in the past, and I'm sad to say we don't have much of the details today.
Roger's President and CEO, Ted Rogers, issued a statement, saying only: "We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can't tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned."
And tuned, we stay… ![]()

Nokia N95 and Apple iPhone headed to Rogers Canada
Monday, April 28, 2008
There are a lot of positives to living in Canada. Unfortunately, access to the newest and higher-end mobile phones is not one of the upsides to living North of the border. Rogers Canada is the country's premier (read: only) GSM provider, and with a lack of any real competition, the cost of GSM data plans has been prohibitively high on Rogers' network.
Well, things are looking up for Rogers customers. Word on the street has it that the Nokia N95 is due to hit Rogers' GSM network on May 2. The Canada-bound variant of the Nokia N95 should hit market sporting the same 5 megapixel camera, GPS receiver, WiFi, TV-out, and 3G HSDPA data connection that the US enjoys. And, with the help of Rogers, the Nokia N95 should be able to make use of its video call camera.
Pricing for the Nokia N95 on Rogers is reported to hit $699 without contract.
And, all you Canadian iPhone hopefuls (those of you that haven't already jumped across the border for an unlocked iPhone) may soon be able to get your hands on a Rogers-locked Apple iPhone in the near future. The Toronto Star cites industry sources as indicating that Rogers is gearing up to launch a touchscreen-based handset campaign with the release of the master of touchscreen handsets, the Apple iPhone. The iPhone's entry into Canada has been speculated to as being held up by the country's costly GSM data plans. But, with the launch of the Rogers' $20 unlimited data plan, the "Communicate Value Pack," Rogers is believed to be preparing to receive the heralded iPhone.
The iPhone is said to hit Canada some time between May and July. The purported timing of the iPhone in Canada points to the release of the 3G iPhone ahead of RIM's BlackBerry 9000, giving Apple a head start in RIM's home country.

RIM working on Apple iPhone killing BlackBerry with touchscreen
Codenamed "AK" (for Apple Killer), the BlackBerry maker from Canada is reported to be developing a super-secret competitor to the iPhone. While the BlackBerry 9000 made waves recently with a launch delay, certain speculation hinting that the BlackBerry 9000 would be equipped with a touchscreen has fallen through.
But, that doesn't mean that RIM isn't working on their own touchscreen handset to compete in the newly touchscreen-crazed smartphone market. Independent software developers say that the "AK" is under development at RIM.
Could the rumored BlackBerry 9100 turn out to be the BlackBerry "AK?" Time will tell, but it's almost a lock for RIM to launch some sort of touchscreen device in the near future. After all, touchscreens are the new hotness. But, let's hope that RIM doesn't forget what LG already knows - the UI (User Interface) is the overwhelming deal-maker/deal-breaker.
Apple's got the industry-leading iPhone UI, but RIM could come to market with better enterprise integration and higher-spec hardware. If so, the 3G iPhone could have a serious competitor to deal with.

Analysts: Apple?s 3G iPhone coming June 9
It's no secret that Apple and AT&T are planning to introduce a 3G iPhone sometime in the future, but now evidence is mounting that the formal unveiling will be at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9.
In a report issued Thursday, Citi investment research analysts Richard Gardner and Yeechang Lee suggest hopes are high for the announcement and refer to the date as "D-Day for 3G."
"We expect a steady stream of new products beginning on 9 June (the likely date for Steve Jobs' keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference) with a 3G iPhone and iPhone/iPod touch SDK, continuing with a refresh of the complete laptop line in July/August and concluding with a complete refresh of the iPod line in August/September," Gardner said in the report to investors.
A representative with Apple was initially unavailable to comment on the report. Apple does not typically talk about products before they are released.
A possible 3G iPhone announcement during Steve Jobs' keynote is not unlikely. Several sources are suggesting the same. For example, AT&T chief executive Randall Stephenson promised a new 3G iPhone sometime in 2008. In March, Apple and AT&T stock jumped up after a Bank of America analyst research report about the third-generation phone indicated that an announcement could come by the end of June.
Another indicator of a June 9 "D-Day" for a 3G iPhone are reports that AT&T has delayed the launch of the BlackBerry 9000 from June to August to allow the iPhone launch to take center stage.
So can iPhone fans who have suffered through the slow speed of AT&T's EDGE network look forward to a speedy UMTS/HSDPA network? AT&T's advanced network is available in 272 metro areas and runs along the 700-MHz spectrum. The UMTS/HSDPA network initially will support data speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps.
However, with a new network in place, consumers may question whether the offering will be backward compatible. Current iPhone owners also will want to know if they'll be able to use the 3G network.
"An iPhone using UMTS/HSDPA will operate at much higher data rates and cover wider geographical areas" than current iPhone models, network spectrum expert Joe Nordgaard said in an interview Friday. "AT&T has been rolling out UMTS/HSDPA for a long time now."
In a sense, a UMTS/HSDPA network will just be a stop on the way to a superfast LTE network. In recent months, AT&T has bought wide swathes of spectrum that are expected eventually to be used for LTE.
In announcing AT&T's first-quarter financial statement earlier this week, Stephenson, who has said the iPhone will be a cornerstone around which AT&T will build its future, cited the advantages of the new spectrum. "AT&T is moving quickly to create the next generation of wireless," he said. "The future of wireless has never been more promising, and I am very pleased that through our transaction with Aloha Partners and our successful bids in the recently completed auction, we have assembled the industry's premier, high-quality wireless spectrum position. This spectrum will provide a terrific foundation for new wireless and integrated services, and it significantly advances AT&T's long-term growth potential."
Nordgaard, who is managing director of wireless consulting firm Spectral Advantage, noted that he has no inside knowledge of Apple's or AT&T's plans, but the capability of the UMTS/HSDPA spectrum will dictate some paths the companies will likely take. (IPhone users have been able to get relatively high-speed access on their handsets through their Wi-Fi capability.)
"Given Apple's reputation for user-friendliness, I would expect them to have some capability for current iPhone customers" to access UMTS/HSDPA, he said, adding that the use of the UMTS/HSDPA networks could offer possibilities for the 3G phones to utilize networks in the United States and Europe. Nordgaard said there are frequency differences between the two continents, but they are slight enough that workarounds might be able to be built to make iPhone usage compatible on both sides of the Atlantic.

Foxconn to assemble 3G iPhones with shipments to total 24-25 million units, says paper
Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) has reportedly landed orders for the assembly of second-generation iPhones from Apple supporting 3G, with shipments to begin in June this year, the Chinese-language Commercial Times has quoted sources at foreign institutional investors in Taipei as indicating.
The Commercial Times also cited sources at component suppliers as saying they have been instructed by Apple to begin preparing material supplies by the end of May.
Shipments of the 3G iPhone are expected to top three million units in June with the model likely to ship a total of 24-25 million units throughout its life-cycle, the paper added.
Reports of a 3G version iPhone are all unconfirmed at present, although industry watchers are fairly confident an announcement will be made at or around Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2008 (WWDC 2008) in June based on the current high market demand for the device, plus the proposed timing of the announcement, approximately one year after Apple launched the first-generation iPhone, is characteristic for the company.
Foxconn is currently the sole manufacturer of first-generation iPhones.

BatMP3 a Force to be Reckoned With

Now here's an interesting MP3 player that will definitely get all those baddies in the fictional Gotham City quivering in their boots - the BatMP3 player. I suppose as Batman does a number on ordinary thugs, he'll be busy listening to his favorite tunes by shunning Steve Jobs' iPod and settling for one of his own instead. Shaped after a 2.75" black batshuriken, the BatMP3 player comes with 1GB of flash memory within and features stereo headphones that look like...what else, but bat ears. It will be available this July for $80 a pop - pretty expensive, but it has that certain cool factor to the whole thing.

RIM Wants To Compete With iPhone

RIM apparently has a product in the making known as AK - which obviously enough, stands for "Apple Killer". It will, of course be a touch screen device and RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis let fire his salvo, "I couldn't type on [the iPhone] and I still can't type on it, and a lot of my friends can't type on it. It's hard to type on a piece of glass." It would be interesting to see what kind of BlackBerry that will end up as. I know the consumers are just going to so love such competition.

Carphone Warehouse cleared out of 8GB iPhones
The move made by O2 and Carphone Warehouse to offer Apple's 8GB iPhone for 100 less than the standard price has proved successful - in a week. CW has no more left to sell, and O2's apparently down to the last few.
Both suppliers' websites are current flagging the handset as "out of stock" (CW) and - more ominously - "no longer available" (O2).
Last week, when it announced its cut-price iPhone package, O2 did warn that the 100-off deal would end when stocks ran out.
CW confirmed to Register Hardware this morning that it has indeed sold out of 8GB iPhones across is stores and its website.
However, O2 said that despite having no more 8GB iPhone to sell online, it does have some left in its stores - though it admitted that stocks are "limited".
A CW spokesman tacitly acknowledged that the price-cut had resulted in a "sudden rush" for iPhones, but he refused to be confirm whether the 100 price reduction was entirely to blame for the elimination of the company's iPhone stock - or if the much-rumoured Jesus Phone famine would have got us to this point, at this time anyway.
Earlier today, market watcher Strategy Analytics noted a big decline in world iPhone sales during the past quarter - a dip it blamed on pricing and limited availability.
CW said it was now reviewing its iPhone plans. It wouldn't say whether it will be restocking the 8GB handset and, if it does, whether the new stock will also be sold for 169 a pop.
But with World+Dog eagerly anticipating a 3G iPhone in June, CW and O2 are probably glad to have (almost) cleared their shelves of one of the suddenly somewhat less desirable 2.5G models.
Apple, which is still selling the 8GB phone for 269, can ship 'em out to customers within 24 hours, its UK website said this morning. Both O2 and CW are still offering the 329 16GB iPhone.

8GB iPhone Reaches End of Life?
Friday, April 25, 2008

O2 and Carphone Warehouse seem to have run out of 8GB iPhones, and both of them won't be getting any replenishments from Apple. What do you think this means? Most people would probably point out and say that the 3G iPhone is all but inevitable, which is why the 8GB version won't be restocked. What's your take on it? In all probability, it will be released sometime in the middle of the year, which means you don't have that much longer to wait. I say take the waiting route - after all, patience is a virtue and you wouldn't want to have your brand new cell phone get outdated so fast, hmm?

AT&T deploying its AT&T WiFi HotSpot service at Starbucks locations - iPhone WiFi portal
I caught a glimpse of the AT&T WiFi HotSpot service at the Starbucks down the street from me the other day. And, it seems that AT&T is now officially gearing up to deploy its AT&T HotSpot service across the nation. starting on May 1, AT&T high-speed internet and WiFi HotSpot customers get free WiFi access at all AT&T HotSpot locations, including those at Starbucks countrywide.
T-Mobile will be phased out as the WiFi HotSpot provider at all Starbucks locations in the US.
The move will presumably roll out iPhone-specific WiFi portals at all AT&T HotSpot locations.

AT&T Wi-Fi Service to Be Available Soon in U.S. Company-Operated Starbucks Locations With a Wireless Hot Spot; San Antonio Stores First to Deliver Complete AT&T Experience
SAN ANTONIO, Texas and SEATTLE, Wash., April 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) today announced the beginning of the rollout of AT&T Wi-Fi (SM) service at company-operated Starbucks stores, kicking off a nationwide effort that will continue through 2008. At the 2008 AT&T Inc. Annual Meeting of Stockholders in San Antonio, chairman and chief executive officer Randall Stephenson announced that the companies have already started the deployment of AT&T Wi-Fi service at Starbucks locations in San Antonio, making it the first market to deliver the complete AT&T Wi-Fi experience in the U.S.
Also, as of May 1, qualifying AT&T high speed Internet and Wi-Fi customers will have complimentary Wi-Fi access at more than 7,000 Starbucks locations nationwide. For millions of AT&T customers, that means more speed in more places — and for free — is on its way.
"With the power of our Wi-Fi network, and through our partnership with Starbucks, we're strengthening our ability to meet the needs of today's mobile consumer virtually anywhere and everywhere," Stephenson said. "Expanding our reach across company-operated Starbucks locations nationwide helps us bridge the gap between our wired and wireless offerings and affirms AT&T's commitment to connect people with their worlds, everywhere they live and work."
"We continue to build on the experience we know our customers expect from us," said Chris Bruzzo, chief technology officer, Starbucks. "By partnering with AT&T as our U.S. Wi-Fi provider we aim to deliver a better value, greater convenience and seamless connectivity in a mobility centric world to our customers."
As of May 1, qualifying AT&T customers can connect to the Internet from Wi-Fi enabled company-operated Starbucks locations nationwide by simply selecting "ATTWiFi" after powering up their computers. Free AT&T Wi-Fi service is currently offered with AT&T's three higher-speed residential broadband packages, all small business broadband packages and with all AT&T U-verse(SM) offerings with high speed Internet service.
For other customers, AT&T Wi-Fi service will reach company-operated Starbucks locations on a market-by-market basis throughout the year. The experience will include a mix of free and paid connection options for both frequent and occasional Wi-Fi users and qualifying Starbucks customers. Once AT&T Wi-Fi service is available, customers will be able to shop and surf both Starbucks' and AT&T's respective home pages for products and services.
The initiative brings together two of the most recognizable global brands to create a powerful and convenient online experience for consumers and business customers. The San Antonio launch delivers on the companies' joint commitment to begin the rollout of AT&T Wi-Fi service this spring.
AT&T is the nation's largest Wi-Fi provider.(1) In addition to offering access from more than 17,000 hot spots in the United States, the company provides Wi-Fi access from more than 71,000 hot spots around the world, including roaming locations.

3G iPhone To Be Released June 9, 2008
If you’ve been putting off buying an iPhone waiting for Apple’s 3G version, your wait will soon be over.

Steve Jobs holds a first generation iPhone.
Analysts said they expect the 3G iPhone to be released on June 9, 2008. Apple is expected to drop the price of the 2.5G model to between $249.00 - $349.00.
Of course, connectivity will depend on network capability and capacity on AT&T’s wireless network. They sell and provide wireless services for the iPhone. There’s no word on the expected retail price of the 3G iPhone.

Apple iPhone Instant Messaging Patent. Mobile iChat?
Tuesday, April 22, 2008

While most iPhone users are happy with their (personal) email setup, wouldn’t it be nice to have a native mobile iChat? Sure, Apple demonstrated an AIM client with their SDK but this patented IM client has a predictive text that proposes several choices as you type, potentially shortening the number of strokes needed to type a phrase. The good news is that it is “choices” – not an auto-replace. This means that the phone is not trying to be smarter that you are, it just tries to help.

Apple patent application for universal instant messaging application on iPhone
There are a handful of features missing from the first-generation iPhone. There's no doubt about that. But, the iPhone's success despite lacking key features (depending on who you ask) like MMS, video recording, and a built-in, native instant messaging client is testament to the iPhone's appeal.
The lack of features on the current iPhone doesn't necessarily mean that iPhone users will have to live without forever. With updated firmwares introducing new features to the iPhone every few months, it's only a matter of time before Apple brings MMS and instant messaging to the table. Be it 3G iPhone or the current iPhone, Apple apparently has plans for a universal instant messaging application. A newly published patent application outlines an IM application that looks much like the current SMS text message application.

Bubble-style chat is the name of the game here. In one view, the IM application works just like the current SMS application. The other view, however, changes things up by replacing the text-input box with word-suggestions and placing the typed text in a bubble next to the conversation bubbles. Suggestions for the word being typed appear above the keyboard and offers more flexibility than the current predictive text (which does an amazing job, by the way) method.

And, coming from Apple, the planned IM application will likely run in the background. iPhone SDK limitations restricted third-party applications from running while the iPhone was busy or turned off, but this patent application hints at the possibility of an always-on IM client - allowing you to receive IM's even when the iPhone is turned off.
There's also mention of MMS and video messaging in the patent application. If you're lamenting the absence of MMS (we never use it), there's hope yet!

iPhones selling out in UK following O2 price cut
So, what was the biggest barrier to entry for potential iPhone customers in the UK? By the looks of it, it was the price.
Following the 100 price cut on iPhones from O2 UK, O2 and Carphone Warehouse retail locations are reporting that iPhone stock is selling out like it was launch day all over again. Some O2 stores even reported that they sold out of iPhone stock on the day of the price cut.
The price cut has revived a slowdown in iPhone sales, and highlights UK demand for the iPhone. Some O2 customers looking for a lower-priced iPhone in the UK may have to wait until their local retail location takes shipment of new iPhones this weekend.
The iPhone 8GB will be offered at the frenzy-inducing 169 price point until June 1, presumably before the 3G iPhone launches.

Apple secures ?iPhone? trademark in Japan - 3G iPhone coming to Japan?
Apple has reportedly gotten friendly with Japanese company Aiphone. The two companies have apparently come to terms with the use of the iPhone trademark in Japan, allowing both Apple and Aiphone to use the trademark. Aiphone has reportedly been talking to Apple since last summer over the iPhone trademark.
While Aiphone isn't exactly the same as iPhone, both words are apparently indistinguishable when translated into Japanese. So, in the name of sharing the trademark love, Aiphone has "reached a friendly agreement with Apple" which gives both companies rights to the Japanese iPhone trademark on the island nation.

Great, so Apple and Aiphone have agreed to share the iPhone trademark. What's the big deal? Well, we've got to believe that Apple wouldn't go through the trouble of securing its iPhone rights in Japan unless it didn't have plans to launch the 3G iPhone in the country later this year. After all, it's not like Apple would go out of their way to get Japanese 3G iPhone hopes up, only to crush them later - at least we hope not.

Apple iPhone getting prepped for true GPS support?
If the latest find from the iPhone OS 2.0 firmware is any indication, then Apple could be readying the iPhone for true GPS support in the near term. It's not clear whether the GPS support will come in the form of integrated GPS hardware or support for dock-connected GPS peripherals, but it does seem likely that GPS is coming to the iPhone.
In addition to the previously discovered location logging feature in the unreleased iPhone OS, Steffen Voigt found references to NMEA positional data within the "locationd" component of the newest iPhone developer OS. NMEA is a data format that is used by positioning devices to communicate positional data - like a GPS receiver communicating the current position to a mobile phone.
There are also references to strings mentioning satellite status, GPS time, type, position, accuracy, latitude, speed, magnetic variation, etc., which is a good sign for iPhone users looking for GPS integration.
Apple's announcement that the iPhone's dock connector will be off limits to third-party developers had iPhone GPS add-on manufacturers scrambling to come up with a wireless GPS solution for the iPhone. With this new find, it seems that GPS hardware could be allowed to play through the iPhone's dock connector. Will Apple roll out support for GPS add-on hardware with the major iPhone Mac OS refresh that's slated for later this year? Or will Apple actually build a GPS receiver into the 3G iPhone? In either case, GPS on the iPhone is most likely on the horizon.

Apple said to have signed landmark 3G iPhone deal for Italy
Apple Inc.'s next-generation iPhone will arrive in Italy in a matter of weeks under a landmark deal that will see handset sold through Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) without a contract and carrier lock, according to Repubblica.
The authoritative Italian newspaper reports (by way of Macitynet) that a formal agreement on the matter was signed last week when Franco Bernab, chief executive officer of TIM's parent company Telecom Italia, met with Steve Jobs at Apple's Cupertino-based headquarters.
Under the terms of the deal, TIM will reportedly receive a several month exclusive on sales of a 3G iPhone through its retail shops, which will be staffed with specialists who are trained to support iPhone customers and get the touch-screen handsets up and running on the carrier's 3G network.
Given that Italians are the number one consumer of pre-paid wireless contracts worldwide each year, Apple is also reported to have agreed to terms by which the new iPhone will be sold at a higher price than in other European countries, but without a carrier lock and two-year service agreement.
The move would represent a radical departure from the revenue-share based service model that has led to successful launches of the iPhone in the US and a handful of European countries, but would offer Italians the added freedom of being able to purchase the phone from TIM and use it with existing contracts on rival carriers' networks.
Consumers who opt to use TIM's network would be able to pick from predefined service plans tailored to the iPhone, or purchase minutes and data bundles as they go, Repubblica said.
The Italian carrier reportedly declined to comment on the report at this time, saying they'll have something to say "later on."
TIM's subscriber base of roughly 36.6 million is similar in size to that of T-Mobile Germany, with whom Apple launched the iPhone last November. However, it's estimated that more than 50 percent of Italy's wireless subscribers are already TIM customers.
TIM also operates the second largest wireless network in Brazil, in addition to a much smaller network in Turkey.
Italy's Il Sole 24 Ore.com is also running a a similar story on the deal between Apple and TIM.

Apple Agrees To Unlocked iPhone In Italy
According to reports, Apple has agreed to sell unlocked iPhones in Italy without a mandatory two year contract.

Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) will offer Apple’s upcoming 3G iPhone without a contract and will instead share revenue from the Apple’s Smartphone. Many Italians prefer prepaid cellular plans, so this will give consumers in the country another choice for an affordable calling plan with a snazzy phone.
TIM is said to have exclusive rights for six months to sell the unlocked iPhone that will operate with any 3G network.
The 3G iPhone is expected to hit markets as early as June 2008.
3G iPhone rumored for Italy without contract and unlocked?
Monday, April 21, 2008
The 3G iPhone launch has media outlets the world over buzzing over what the next-generation iPhone will look like and where it will be launched. The latest report comes from Italian language La Repubblica, and indicates that Apple and Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) have already signed a deal to bring the 3G iPhone to Italy. Franco Bernab, CEO Telecom Italia, apparently made the trip out to Cupertino to meet with Steve Jobs and ink said deal.
More interesting is the speculation that the Italian 3G iPhone could break the mold and could be offered without contract or carrier lock. Apple has demanded revenue sharing agreements and on-contract, carrier exclusivity from all iPhone partners (with the exception of France), but this new deal represents a stark departure from Apple's business model for the iPhone.
The deal is said to provide TIM with a 3-month exclusivity window on the 3G iPhone. And, Apple will reportedly allow the 3G iPhone to be sold unlocked, contract-free. The next-generation iPhone will be sold at a higher price than anywhere else in Europe.
Apple will likely maintain its revenue-sharing and carrier-lock policy with its 3G iPhone in other parts of the world. However, TIM could prove to be the sole source of unlocked and 3G iPhones - at a premium, of course.

iPhone Without Exclusive Deal in Italy, Exception or Policy Change?

The Italy iPhone launch might signal a change in policy at Apple. As of now, Apple chose one carrier per country to which it gave exclusive rights to commercialize the iPhone. The idea is that carriers enter a bidding process during which they bid more royalties to Apple to get the coveted contract. Of course, there are many variables like the customer base and so on. So far AT&T has been fairly happy with the deal.
The Italian “La Repubblica” believes that this will come to an end soon and that Apple will switch to a more open model that involves several (or all) carriers. We can only speculate on this and our opinion is that the exclusivity tactic is a powerful demonstration for all carriers: they can make more money, even after sharing the subscription fees with Apple. However, this tactic has the drawback of locking out legions of customers trapped in their current contracts.
By becoming less exclusive, Apple will likely increase their total available market – which they need to continue to grow quickly.

AT&T rolls out iPhone specific AT&T HotSpot WiFi login at Starbucks
Saturday, April 19, 2008
So, I'm sitting here at a Starbucks in beautiful Santa Monica, CA., spending another gorgeous day indoors. Rather than dwelling on all the fresh air I'm passing up, I decided to fire up my iPhone's Safari browser and stream some music from the web through SeeqPod. Lo and behold, the usual T-Mobile HotSpot offering is now complemented by an AT&T HotSpot service - and the AT&T WiFi HotSpot login page has been changed!
Now, I find myself entering my AT&T credentials (this particular location doesn't offer free AT&T WiFi HotSpot service) into an iPhone-optimized interface, rather than dealing with T-Mobile's login portal. The process is easy and even fun to do on my iPhone. It's the small things that make life interesting.
I dug around a bit and found that AT&T should start offering 2 free hours of WiFi service and should finish changing over approximately 7,000 Starbucks locations to AT&T WiFi HotSpots by Summer. And, the iPhone-specific login portal will be available at all AT&T HotSpot locations nationwide. This particular Starbucks doesn't offer the free service, so it's safe to say that the new service will be rolled out in stages.
The new iPhone-specific AT&T HotSpot portal should also offer a bevy of WiFi access options, including the use of pre-paid cards, membership, one-day passes, and coupons. Unfortunately this particular Starbucks doesn't offer those login options. Here's a picture of what the new portal should look like.
Feel free to chime in and leave a comment if your local Starbucks offers AT&T HotSpot access. It'd be nice to get an idea for how many Starbucks locations are already switched over to AT&T's HotSpot service.

Orange France working with Apple to cut iPhone price, boost iPhone sales ahead of 3G iPhone launch
It looks like French iPhone hopefuls are next in line to see a drop in the price of current-generation iPhones. Reports are pointing towards Apple working with Orange France to offer subsidies for the iPhone. As it stands, Orange is not allowed to offer any purchase subsidies on the iPhone, but with the 3G iPhone launch looming, and plenty of iPhone stock remaining, things will likely change.
Apple COO Tim Cook purportedly received Orange executives for a meeting in California to discuss possible price cuts on the iPhone. The introduction of a subsidy for the iPhone will require a reworking of the revenue sharing agreement between Orange and Apple.
But, with iPhone price cuts in the UK and Germany, it would make sense for Apple to give Orange a break and allow them to offer subsidies on the iPhone. Hang in there, France.

iPhone Pwnage Tool for Windows

The iPhone Pwnage Tool is back with a vengeance, and this time it is available on the Windows platform. Being in beta, you can naturally expect several features to be disabled. Are you man enough to give this a go and risk bricking your precious iPhone? Well, it isn't too bad these days considering the massive price drops since its release last year, and with the long rumored 3G version basically waiting to be released, that isn't too big a risk to take after all.

Nokia?s CEO Kallasvuo says the Apple iPhone is a niche product
By now you all know that Nokia is working on an iPhone-fighting touchscreen handset based on the S60 Touch OS. The UI on the S60 Touch OS still needs work, from initial impressions. The hardware, on the other hand, looks good.
But, the most memorable comment in this whole Nokia S60 Touch vs. iPhone debacle is Nokia CEO Kallasvuo's statement, in response to analysts' suggestions that Nokia needs to do more to fight the iPhone, that the iPhone is a "niche product." I'm not even going to touch this one with a 10-foot pole - so here's an interesting take from MacDailyNews:
Kallasvuo is either incapable of applying the lessons of iPod to iPhone and understanding what's coming his way or, much more likely, he understands perfectly and, since he has no answer, is saying just what many now-defunct (if they aren't making iPod accessories) MP3-makers said a few years ago. How many "niche" products have $100 million venture capital funds ready and waiting, exactly? Candybars and way-too-late, fake 1st generation iPhones with craptastic UI's aren't going to cut it from here on out, Nokia boy. This June, the bloodbath really begins, and Kallasvuo sounds like he knows it.
I think he takes that comment personally.

02 And Car Warehouse Cuts Price Of iPhone
Thursday, April 17, 2008
Prices are falling on iPhones sold in the UK.
Retailers 02 and Carphone Warehouse recently announced they are dropping the retail price of Apple’s 8GB Smartphone.
O2 dropped the iPhone price by 100 GBP, (about $197) to 169 GBP, or $333. In Germany, T-Mobile dropped prices earlier this month by about 75% to as little as 99 euros, or about $158, with the most expensive service plan.
These lower prices are expected to remain in place until around June 1, 2008. Apple was not behind this decision to lower the prices of 8GB iPhones. Apple is expected to release a new 3G phone about this same time. Current iPhones operate on the EDGE network.
iPhone to Launch in India in September

Apple is reportedly launching the iPhone in India with Vodaphone in September. India is extremely important because of the population’s size, but also because the growth is still very high. As of last month, the country was adding 8 million subscribers per month and it was expected to surpass the U.S by now…
At an expected price of Rs 28,000 it would be more than six-times the average phone selling price, but there is without doubt a large audience that could afford it. The 8GB iPhone should land first, followed by higher capacity versions.

United Microelectronics to Manufacture 3G iPhone Chip
Wednesday, April 16, 2008

The word on the street is that United Microelectronics (UMC) is manufacturing the 3G chip that is supposed to power the next iPhone, using a 65nm process. The chip (Infineon PMB8878, or SGOLD3 in the Apple SDK) would be from Infineon as previously posted. If you work in the semi-conductor industry, you know that Taiwan is leakier than a colander. Once the info hits Taiwan, everyone knows what the competition is doing – not cool, but when it comes to semi-conductor manufacturing, that is the best place.

New Apple iPhone lineup may offer three iPhone trim options
Apple's been something of a one trick pony in the mobile space. Granted, the iPhone is Apple's very first foray into the mobile phone industry, and they've done an amazing job on their first go. But, that doesn't change the fact that there is only a single iPhone offering (not counting the two different storage options - 8GB and 16GB) from Cupertino.
All that may be about to change with the next iPhone launch this year. Popular opinion has Apple launching the 3G iPhone in June, and other rumors point to the next-generation iPhone getting that coveted 3G chip in a slimmer package. Other rumors indicate that Apple may offer the 3G iPhone with 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB variants.
Now, we have a rumor from Doc Macenstein that has Apple offering the iPhone in three distinct trim levels. The iPhone "Max" or iPhone "Pro" will apparently be the iPhone flagship and will include that 3G chip from Infineon, but will add a bit of girth - coming in at over 15mm, compared to the 11.6mm thickness of the current iPhone. The 3G iPhone may be packing on the pounds in order to fit a larger, higher capacity battery. Apple will allegedly offer the iPhone "Max" as an enterprise handset capable of enduring longer stints without any charging.
The mid-level iPhone offering may just be the current iPhone. No changes. No 3G.
And, an entry-level iPhone may just round out Apple's iPhone lineup. A smaller and smaller iPhone could hit the market with an amazingly thin 6.2mm profile - in line with previous rumors. Unfortunately, all that thinness comes at the cost of video playback and will only offer 4GB of storage. The display size will remain the same, and will only do EDGE data. Cost is said to be $159.
Previous rumors of a slimmer iPhone hinted that the 3G iPhone would shave off the millimeters from its casing, but if this rumor pans out, we could see the slimmer iPhone only available as a pared-down version of the current iPhone. But, the added thickness of the 3G iPhone does allow for a higher-capacity battery that should let users surf the 3G network-waves to their hearts' content.
There are almost too many rumors to deal with at this point. We'll see what happens…
Disclaimer:
Doc himself is hesitant to stand by this speculation, so we're going to take it for what it is - a rumor.

Super Monkey Ball On The iPhone?
Tuesday, April 15, 2008
Sega's Super Monkey Ball was one fun game when it was first released, and it has apparently been ported over to the iPhone. According to producer Ethan Einhorn, this port is a casual title that supports the "pick up and play" gaming culture which is so prevalent today (thanks in no small part to the Nintendo DS' phenomenal success), and boasts an interface innovation that somewhat resembles that of the Wii along with comparable gaming performance like the PSP and DS Lite. Guess the iPhone ain't too bad as a casual gaming platform, eh?

iPhone price cut by 100
The iPhone is being cut in price right here in the UK. O2 and Carphone Warehouse are shaving off a massive 100 from the current 269 deal for the 8GB version.
The move comes just weeks after T Mobile cut the price of the Jesus phone to ?99 in Germany. However, in the UK, we?re getting something far more substantial, with the phone being cut down to size in every tariff. Our German buddies can only get the cheaper phone if they opt for the top-notch deal.
The cut is, however, limited to the 8GB, with the newly minted 16GB version remaining at a wallet?melting 329. Anyone who bought an 8GB in the last month will get an 'Ultimate Price Promise" 100 refund voucher.
The deal is set to run until June, suggesting we?ll be getting our hands on a 3G-filled iPhone in a matter of weeks. The question is, is it worth shelling out for the EDGE?packing version now, or holding onto your pennies and paying top dollar for the beefed up cell?
Andrew Harrison from Carphone Warehouse said, "Of course, significant price reductions can make people who have recently purchased feel like they missed out, so with our Ultimate Price Promise customers will get an unexpected bonus." No 3G mentioned there though.
Stock of the iPhone remains low, and there?s no doubt that this deal will empty out the reserves and bulk?up the already substantial iPhone cult in the UK.

O2 and Carphone Warehouse offer 100 discount on iPhone 8GB
Following fellow European iPhone counterpart T-Mobile's move to subsidize the iPhone 8GB when purchased with a a qualifying rate plan, O2 UK has announced that it will be shaving a cool 100 off the retail price of their iPhone 8GB stock. The offer is only valid from April 16 to June 1, and only applies to the 8GB iPhone variant. The iPhone 16GB will still cost 329.
Is T-Mobile cutting back on the 8GB iPhone price in an efort to try and clear out as much of the current iPhone stock in preparation for the 3G iPhone's launch in June? It seems quite likely. iPhone stocks around the world are starting to dip to shortage-inducing lows, which bodes well for a near term launch of the 3G iPhone. And, the price drop on the 8GB model alone could even indicate that Apple will release the iPhone in a 32GB variant. Pure speculation? Sure it is. But, we'll keep hoping until we're told otherwise.

iPhone Gets Price Cut In UK

Folks living in the UK who think that they have the disposable income to pick up yet another iPhone can jump for joy, as O2 has just confirmed a new low, low price of £169, thanks to a £100 reduction for the 8GB model. This move is in line with T-Mobile in Germany who decided to lower the price of the handset from £315 to a mere £78. I suppose these low prices are great for clearing out the inventory, as the much-rumored 3G iPhone should be on its way to delivery lines pretty soon.

Sega's Super Monkey Ball promises casual iPhone gaming
The iPhone as a gaming platform. It's inevitable. And, with the AppStore launching in a couple short months, the success of mobile games on the iPhone will be largely left to how much gaming development is available for the iPhone.
One of the few games demonstrated at the iPhone SDK launch was Spore. But, games like Spore aren't designed for a casual gaming experience. Gameplay evolves and builds on previous sessions. On the other hand, Sega's Super Monkey Ball, the other game that was shown at the iPhone SDK launch, is the embodiment of casual iPhone gaming. Pick up the iPhone, fire up a new game session, and quit when you're bored - casual gaming is easy and fun.
Ethan Einhorn sat down with GameCyte to talk about the development of Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone. Einhorn explains that the casual gaming experience on the iPhone will be much like that on the Wii and gaming performance that's on par with other handheld gaming devices. Sega and Apple apparently have a great working relationship, so we can probably look forward to more iPhone games from Sega. That's great news and all, but let's just hope that other iPhone game developers are pushing their iPhone games just as hard.

Associated Press announces ?Mobile News Network? for iPhone - AP on iPhone and other smartphones
The iPhone is a globally iconic device. It set the stage for a new wave of media-centric handsets driven by the user-interface and web-browsing capabilities. And as such, the Associated Press has embraced the iPhone as the premier online news delivery platform. The AP's "Mobile News Network" will offer news on"local content from brands they trust. Members can participate by providing local news that will appear alongside their logos." iPhone users will see their national and local news delivered on web pages formatted specifically for the iPhone.
"AP is working with mobile phone manufacturers and carriers to develop the best user interface for this comprehensive collection of news stories, photos and video from the news industry. The network will be optimized for the richest multimedia experience the newwireless devices will allow. For AP television and radio members, work continues on the technical plan for video and audio participation in the Digital Cooperative program."
The AP will launch their Mobile News Network this summer. Mobile News Network will be free and ad-supported. The advertising revenue will be split 50/50 between the AP and the publishing newspaper, giving struggling newspapers another revenue stream to help boost their bottom line.

Where to Get Cheap MP3 Albums
Saturday, April 12, 2008
Usually people look for single mp3 files and this is why they are offered all over the internet. You go to a search engine and get dozens of links where mp3 files are offered widely at a different price.
One more aspect, you want it to be cheap and at the same time you don’t want to feel like you are doing something illegal. I don’t like a thought of being one of those thousands people who use pirated versions and, basically, steal the music. So, every time I find a website with downloads I go to their license page to be sure these people act legally.
If you want advice where to get cheap mp3 albums, I could offer you two good websites.
MP3Sale is one of them. I really like it because of their design. It looks retro, but at the same time it looks cool. The second thing I like is their prices. Here you can download really cheap mp3 albums. If you don’t believe me, check out the price, it is only $0.99! Isn’t it attractive? And what is also interesting, you can find anything you like on this site. Rock, pop, classics, folk… Any kind of music a person desires can be found here.
Amazon MP3 has a higher price, but it is also trustworthy and has a good choice of albums. Here the price of an album is $8.99. Millions of customers use this website each day and don’t get disappointed with their service. Amazon.com has fine choice of different kinds of music and their production is absolutely legal.--

NetBlender goes live with BD Touch application - control your Bluray Disc player with your iPhone
Just as we expected, NetBlender has officially outed their BD Touch application for iPhone and iPod Touch today. As you'll probably recall, BD Touch essentially turns your iPhone (and iTouch) into a remote control for your Bluray Disc player (even the PS3).
Through the magic of your Bluray Player's BD-Live technology, the iPhone in your pocket is now a remote control and even a portable media player. BD Touch allows you to send movies from, say, your PS3 to your iPhone straight from the disc menu. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has to build said features into the Bluray Disc before you can take your Bluray movies on the road.
Fret not, major studios are apparently behind the idea, so it's only a matter of time before you can take your Bluray goodness with you anywhere you go.

Rumor: iPhone 2 to Have a Broadcom GPS Chip?

We’ve seen all kinds of rumors, sometimes, we publish them because they might have a hint of truth, but we’re publishing this one because it seems ridiculous:
“Tonight, based on a recent informal conversation my Dad had with his friend's wife who works at Apple, he told me the next iPhone is likely to have GPS. Usually, my Dad's friend's wife doesn't let Apple product info slip out until right before a new product announcement is made. This being the case, I'm betting GPS will be included with the 3G iPhone... and soon"
That was the good old “a friend of a friend told me…”. Note that the iPhone might very well have a GPS (we think it will). Others have speculated that Broadcom might be the chip. If that’s the case, we think that it may be the Broadcom BCM4750 G-GPS chip. At 35 square millimeters (total solution), it is certainly small enough to fit in.

Software could trip up Nokia?s iPhone rival
Friday, April 11, 2008
First Nokia touchscreen phone could be a disappointment, analysts warn
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Details of Nokia Corp.'s upcoming riposte to Apple Inc.'s iPhone are beginning to emerge, but analysts cautioned that while the touch-screen gadget is bound to look snazzy, its operating system could disappoint.
Nokia Corp. , the world's largest maker of mobile phones, has made it no secret over the past few months that it's working on a high-end phone with touch-screen technology to fight back Apple's foray onto its home turf.
The first hints of such a device came months ago but there are now signs that an official announcement could be imminent.
Nokia this week teased industry observers with a slide showing the phone, code-named the "tube," at the Evans Data Developer Conference in Redwood City, Calif.
Yet a Nokia spokesman declined to give a precise date for the launch, only saying it would happen in the second half of the year. He added that Nokia doesn't comment on the potential specifications of upcoming handsets.
Industry observers had been patient, stressing how important it is for Nokia to get it right and not risk disappointing fans with a half-baked device that wouldn't stand the comparison with the game-changing iPhone.
"The iPhone had a seismic impact on the industry," said Ben Wood, an analyst at U.K. telecoms consultancy CSS Insight. "From the day it was released, every other phone out there became disappointing," he said. "Unless Nokia's product is amazingly good, they'd better not come out with anything."
As the months pass, however, pressure is building up on the Finnish maker to unveil its iPhone competitor before Apple launches a third-generation (3G) version of the popular gadget.
"In the long term Nokia definitely needs a touch-screen portfolio. Apple has raised
the bar and Nokia needs to react," said Neil Mawston, research director in the mobile device practice of research firm Strategy Analytics.
He added Nokia is likely taking its time because of its "obsession with reliability and durability."
Software may be 'disappointment'
When Nokia's first touch-screen phone eventually comes out, looks will be important, but software is what could make the difference between success and failure.
Richard Windsor, of Nomura International, said that when he tested the latest version of the S60 operating system, understood to be the software the Nokia touch phone will run on, he was "deeply unimpressed."
He warned that unless there is a "meaningful improvement" to the user experience before the phone is launched, it could fail to catch on and become profitable.
"While the device looks great, we think that the software that runs it could easily end up being a massive disappointment," he said.
Carolina Milanesi, research director in the mobile device practice of Gartner, also had doubts. She believes the S60 operating system will only allow users to use one finger at a time when giving commands on the touch screen. In comparison, the iPhone's interface is "multi touch," meaning it can respond to the use of several digits simultaneously. That feature allows iPhone users to expand or shrink a photo by pinching its frame between two fingers, for instance.
That capability likely won't be possible on Nokia's device, and the maker "will need to come up with something to make up for this shortfall," Milanesi said.
Other analysts also predicted a difficult start for Nokia's first direct response to the iPhone.
"Apple has set the bar so high that any competing device will almost inevitably fail at its first attempt," CSS Insight's Wood said.
But even if Nokia's first device in the touch-screen segment is a flop, there's a good chance it can eventually develop a serious rival.
Wood noted that Samsung, now the number-two maker of mobile phones, has showed that it's possible to quickly improve on the first version of a touch-screen product.
The South Korean maker has released at least five touch-screen phones, including the Instinct, since the iPhone was first unveiled.
And the iPhone has its vulnerabilities.
Nokia could beat iPhone on text messaging
Perhaps the biggest opportunity is in text messaging, said Strategy Analytics' Mawston.
"I think if Nokia can crack the messaging on their contender to the iPhone, they stand a good chance at differentiating themselves," he said.
Text messaging is particularly popular in Europe as a way for teenagers to communicate, and it's also catching on in the U.S.
Mawston believes Nokia is likely to release just one phone initially and then gradually build a family, which could be called the T-series. He stressed that Nokia's goal is different from Apple's because the Finnish firm would never be satisfied with selling just 10 million phones.
They would want to sell many more to leverage economies of scale, he said.
By comparison, Nokia in 2007 sold 38 million devices from its high-end N series.
Nokia is scheduled to report first-quarter results next Thursday.

Use your iPhone to blog on the go - Native WordPress and TypePad applications coming to iPhone soon
If blogging is your thing, and you like to actually get out from behind your desk every once in a while (apparently there's a whole real-life world out there, I have no idea what it is but I've heard of it), mobile blogging is your best bet. And, the iPhone's gorgeously huge multi-touch display combined with the bad-ass Safari browser is the perfect platform from which to blog on the go.
I make it a point to take my blogging to the road and actually make a few posts with my iPhone. I can't type as fast on the iPhone's on-screen keyboard as I can with my laptop keyboard, but that's expected. I can, however, type faster on the iPhone than on any physical mobile phone keyboard I've ever used (and I've used my fair share).
So, it's good to hear that mobile blogging tools are about to hit the iPhone. WordPress is apparently going to hit the iPhone very soon - perhaps with the launch of the AppStore. Matt Mullenwag, head honcho at WordPress, will only admit that there is a mobile device that has a WordPress client "built in," and that "you can probably guess which one that is" - but we'll take that as confirmation that WordPress is coming to the iPhone.
Six Apart, not one to man the sidelines, will also be throwing a native TypePad blogging application into the fray. ?Six Apart pioneered the mobile blogging experience with an iPhone-optimized blog service,? said Chris Alden, CEO, Six Apart. ?We?re taking it to the next level with our native iPhone application for TypePad that?s already in development.?
The native third-party applications do away with the need to blog through a web interface, and will no doubt offer the benefits of speed and offline blogging to iPhone die-hards. Until these WordPress and TypePad application hit the market, you might do well to check out this WordPress plug-in (WPhone) that optimizes the WordPress interface for your iPhone (read: it's EDGE-friendly). I personally would rather use the full WordPress interface, but I only use it in conjunction with a WiFi connection.
Check out this video. It's long. Fast forward to 51:00.

Apple ?s 3G iPhone to be priced from $399
Thursday, April 10, 2008
Chicago (IL) ? We just came across a few more interesting 3G iPhone details. Industry sources told TG Daily that the device in fact will launch at WWDC 2008, in two or possible three different configurations, and prices starting at $399. There are a few other tweaks, which, however, may be less than you would expect from a next-gen iPhone.
We aren?t quite sure about the reasons why we are suddenly getting a lot more information about Apple products than we used to in the past and whether these are intentional leaks or just leaks that Apple just has to deal with as it is growing into a much larger entity than it was a few years ago.
These thoughts put aside, prices of the 3G iPhone may be what most of potential buyers may be interested in. Our sources told us that there will be at least two models, one with 8 GB and one with 16 GB memory, priced at $399 and $499, respectively. This pricing structure is identical to current iPhones There is a chance that we could see a 32 GB version for $599, but we were not able to receive a confirmation for this claim.
The iPhone itself will come with a slightly thinner body, which sheds about 2.5 mm when compared to the original iPhone. The casing, we are told, will see revisions in its appearance, removing some of the ?plasticky? feeling of some parts. There will not be any significant changes to the operating system as well as the graphical user interface, but we did hear that the accelerometer has been tuned a bit. Unfortunately, Apple decided to stick with a non-removable battery.
To get the details on the whole package we will have to wait for another 63 days. In 63 days, at 9:30 am PST, all questions will be answered. Oh, we almost forgot: Apple is also now working in tic-tock mode between iPhone and iPod Touch. iPod touch should always have a twice the capacity model for the same price as iPhone. Just like iPod touch 32 GB today has the price of 16 GB iPhone, future iPhones and iPods will be parallel: when the 64 GB iPod touch debuts, you can expect that the touch model will continue to have a price match in the form of a 32 GB 3G iPhone.
Lastly, we still have that ?two Golden Gate bridges? thingy. It is actually a symbol for the separation between the iPhone/iPod and Mac, we were told. Apple's goal is to be building a software development infrastructure for the handheld OS, so expect a ton of sessions and workshops that will help developers to create new applications.

Xiaxue?s Guide To Life: EP16 - The iPhone
Next generation, 3G iPhone to launch at Apple?s WWDC in June - thinner, faster, more high-end
Apple's preparing to launch their 3G iPhone in the US with a cut-back in current iPhone stock. And, following on reports that Apple's placed a 10 million unit-strong order for iPhones (presumably 3G versions) with Taiwan-based Hon Hai (Foxconn), we're hearing that the 3G iPhone will indeed launch at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in June.
The Apple WWDC is 63 days away and falls in line with speculation that the iPhone will launch in June and reiterates other rumors that point to the 3G iPhone launching at the WWDC conference. TGDaily has it from "industry sources" that the 3G iPhone will indeed be debuted at WWDC and will be offered in 8GB ($399), 16GB ($499) and possibly a monster 32GB ($599) variant. The launch of 8GB and 16GB 3G iPhones is quite solid, however, the 32GB 3G iPhone is an unconfirmed rumor.
Apple is apparently going to shave an impressive 2.5mm off the current iPhone's case thickness, giving the 3G iPhone a slim-advantage (literally) over the current iPhone. The casing material will also be revised, resulting in a more "high-end" and less "plasticy" feel. Unfortunately, the battery will remain a sealed unit and there will be no major revisions to the iPhone UI.
We already know with reasonable confidence that the 3G iPhone will sport an Infineon-based S-GOLD3H 3G chip that will enable HSDPA speeds up to 7.2Mbps (not in the US, sorry). And now we can expect the 3G iPhone to sport an even slimmer casing, more high-end materials, and possibly even a 32GB variant. No mention of whether the 3G iPhone will sport a front-facing video-call camera that is supported by the Infineon S-GOLD3H 3G chip and speculated by Kevin Rose.
We'll just have to keep waiting until Apple decides to drop the 3G iPhone-bomb on the whole world. Although, it is quite peculiar that we're getting all these leaks recently out of the once tight-lipped Apple.

New iPhone SDK beta reveals details on next-gen iPhone 3G chip - Infineon powered 3G iPhone
Wednesday, April 09, 2008
Following on previous rumors that the next-generation 3G iPhone will be powered by a 3G cellular communications chip (cellular baseband) from Infineon, the new iPhone SDK beta reveals that the 3G chip powering the 3G iPhone may indeed be sourced from Infineon. The makers of ZiPhone have found, after drudging through the new iPhone SDK code, references to the Infineon SGOLD3 chip. The Infineon S-GOLD3H is a member of Infineon's S-GOLD cellular communications chip family and succeeds the S-GOLD2 chip that allows for GSM and EDGE communications on the current iPhone.
The S-GOLD3H chip (PDF link) from Infineon, code named "PMB8878," provides for application acceleration and media-playback in addition to allowing the faster 3G data transfer rates. And, not to be outdone by other 3G handsets, the S-GOLD3H boasts 7.2Mbps HSDPA which trumps the 3.6Mbps HSDPA data rates that other 3G chips allow. The S-GOLD3H chipset will also support WCDMA, 5 megapixel camera, live video recording (finally!), and two-way video communications.
Support for WCDMA is essential if the iPhone is to succeed in markets like Japan and South Korea, where WCDMA is the cellular standard used. But, more interesting is the possibility that the 3G iPhone will come to market bearing a 3 to 5 megapixel camera that can record video. And, two-way video calling would essentially prove Kevin Rose correct in his predictions for the next-gen 3G iPhone.
Unfortunately, the 3G iPhone's S-GOLD3H chip won't be hitting any speed limits in the US. AT&T's ongoing 3G network upgrade will only bring HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) access - boosting 3G upload speeds but leaving the 3.6Mbps HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) download speeds unchanged. However, the S-GOLD3H chip should be able to take advantage of 7.2Mbps 3G networks elsewhere.
On the other hand, AT&T's HSUPA network rollout should allow for the two-way video communications that is supported by the S-GOLD3H chip. Processor speed on the 3G iPhone should remain the same with the S-GOLD3H chipset as the current, S-GOLD2-powered iPhone.

Someone has looked into the new iPhone SDK and noticed that it contains an string mentioning a SGOLD3 chipset from Infineon (they also built the 2.5G chipset for the current iPhone). Anyhow, this is not like hardcore hacking or something, but it provides a hint to what iPhone 2 will be capable of:
- 7.2Mbps HSDPA (3.5G)
- Up to 5 Megapixel photo processing
- Mpeg4/H.264 decoder
All signs point to a June release, just as I predicted back in Oct 2007.

Will Australia get the 3G iPhone in June?
And the 3G iPhone rumors keep coming in.
The latest rumblings in the Apple community hint toward Australia getting the iPhone in June. According to MacTalk, Apple resellers down-unda have started to get word from Cupertino on how to handle the iPhone launch at the end of June.
A June launch of the iPhone in Australia coincides with widely held beliefs that the 3G (Infineon powered) iPhone will be launching in June or early July. We could see Australia even launching the 3G iPhone straight out of the gates, leap-frogging over the current, EDGE-only iPhone. All major wireless network in Australia already have 3G HSDPA networks in place, with the exception of Telstra's EDGE network - making a 3G iPhone most likely for Australia. Unless Apple has already cemented deals with Telstra, it would make more sense to roll out the 3G iPhone on other networks.
The iPhone launch rumors for Australia are also timed quite coincidentally with the grand opening of the first Apple retail stores in Sydney and Melbourne.
We'll keep our ears to the ground on this one folks. Hopefully, we'll see the iPhone hit Australia in a couple months.

Native third-party Twitter client for jailbreak-ed iPhones
Tired of having to resort to web-based solution for updating your Twitter account from your iPhone? Yea, me too. It's about time that somebody came along and launched a native, third-party application that puts the power of Twitter right on your iPhone. No more web-apps folks, this is a locally installed Twitter client.
Nicholas Pike's MobileTwitter has just launched on Installer.app through STE's application repository. Go check your Installer.app "Recent Packages" list, you'll see MobileTwitter hanging out there. Of course, you have to jailbreak your iPhone to get Installer.app up and running (not to mention the ability to actually install third-party applications), so get to it if you haven't already.
As it stands, MobileTwitter is a vast improvement over the Hahlo or PocketTweets web-apps solutions. And, Pike has more improvements planned down the line, so MobileTwitter can only get better.

Griffin?s Wave for iPhone cases protect your beloved device, make it look even cooler

Just recently, we spotted new stylish iPhone cases by Griffin called Wave for iPhone. What's unique about these colorful accessories is their wave-shaped closures on the sides that make the iPhone easily fit inside the shell. From Griffin's website:
Place your iPhone into the Wave case, press the two halves together with a satisfying click, and your iPhone is protected inside a durable polycarbonate shell. The unique wave-shaped closure provides greater interlocking surface area, so you can carry your iPhone with confidence.

Two-thirds of Chinese aware of Apple iPhone
In a country that hasn't even seen the official launch of the iPhone, more than two-thirds of the Chinese population is aware of the iPhone. There are so many iPhone clones coming out of Chinese factories, it's almost impossible not to ignore the counterfeit side of things. Perhaps the prevalence of China-made iPhone copies has helped make the iPhone an icon.
Pearl Research has found that, when asked about the iPhone, a full 68% of Chinese are aware of the iPhone. The study was conducted with 450 online participants and 24 in-depth interviews. Not too surprisingly, female respondents noted the iPhone's design and "hot" factor as reasons to buy the device, while males were more likely to cite the utility of the iPhone as a big draw.
But, unlike other iPhone markets, the study found that potential iPhone users in China are less likely to hop on the highly restrictive Chinese information superhighway. High data costs are cited as reasons that China's iPhone hopefuls are a lot less likely to surf the heavily Chinese-government censored internet.
With 88% of iPod owners interested in the iPhone, Apple would do well to crack the Chinese market sooner rather than later. Although, the current price of the iPhone is a significant barrier to entry in China.

Nokia Tube, the Anti-iPhone

No one in the media has touched the actual device yet, but an image was shown during a recent developer presentation held in Redwood City (Silicon Valley). Of course, everyone will point out that it does look like the iPhone (well, anything that has only a display would more or less look like it).
It is Nokia’s first Touch-only device, and the company is confident that it will be able to compete with Apple’s iPhone. It might run the Symbian OS, which was ironically designed for touch devices…

We all wish we could carry around an external booster antenna for our cell phones. ClearBoost lets you do exactly that for your iPhone.
This clever case conceals a built-in booster antenna that captures more of the available wireless signal and sends it to the internal antenna of your iPhone. The result is a better signal, especially in border areas?which translates to fewer dropped calls, wider coverage areas, and faster downloads when browsing through your cellular connection.
Nothing to plug in -- just snap iPhone into ClearBoost?s durable polycarbonate case. Your iPhone gets protection from real-world hazards, and its antenna gets a boost.

Nokia shows off iPhone fighting Nokia Tube
The Finnish mobile phone giant is not about to let the iPhone take any of its dominant market away from Espoo. With the iconic iPhone redefining the user experience in mobile phones, Nokia has been toiling away with a touch-based competitor to the iPhone. With S60 Touch finally getting the touchscreen treatment that the Symbian platform was initially designed for, Nokia's on its way to pushing an all-touch device out its factory doors soon (well, not out of Bochum).
At the Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City, CA., Nokia showed off their iPhone fighting Nokia Tube. The "Tube" looks a lot like the iPhone, but then any mobile phone (mobile device) with a full-body touchscreen and a minimal bezel looks like the iPhone.
Nokia showed graphical UI elements and demonstrated movie playback at the event. The Nokia "Tube" prototype still looks like the prototype we saw in November 2007. Nokia Executive VP said that ,"If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride," and it looks like they're holding to the iPhone-esque design.
The Nokia Tube will feature direct video uploading and support for Java, both things that the current iPhone does not offer. This could give Nokia a hand up on the current iPhone, but it remains to be seen how the S60 Touch OS will fare against the iPhone OS.
As far as sales go, Nokia's dominance in the market and the Tube's features are expected to out-class the iPhone. Forum Nokia VP Tom Libretto, derided Apple with the assertion that, while Apple has shipped 5-6 million iPhones since launch, "We've done that [sales volume] since we've had dinner on Friday." To be fair, the sales figures for the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer are largely due to sales in the low-end (and Nokia's device portfolio is extensive, to say the least). It should be interesting to see how Nokia Tube sales fare against Apple iPhone sales, especially once the 3G iPhone goes live.
No release date has been mentioned for the Nokia Tube.

Wayfinder?s Power Search goes iPhone, iPod Touch
Tuesday, April 08, 2008

Recently, Wayfinder launched of a web app to bring its "award-winning Power Search technology available to iPhone and iPod Touch users." Wayfinder's idea is to provide Apple products' users with access to "multitude of databases" through one unified search field that covers up to 100 million local search records around the world.
A user can enter a phone number, a person's name or a company name and the Wayfinder Power Search web application will return relevant search results. Through agreements with several database providers around the world the user receives relevant answers for the specific country where the search is being made. The search engine is based on Tele Atlas digital map data, to which information from a number of other premium databases is added. For a limited time premium travel content from Wcities will be searchable as well.
Interested? Well me too. However, Wayfinder haven't provided us with the URL where we could try out the service. Just a press release. It's like they don't love us.
Don't worry — we'll share the URL as soon as we get it!

NetBlender lets you control your Blu-ray Disc player with iPhone - transfer movies to iPhone
Blu-ray is the de facto disc-format of the next-generation. With the fall of HD-DVD, Blu-ray has recently gotten a significant boost in market share and consumer deployment. The newest technology for Blu-ray players will soon allow you to use your iPhone's sleek and industry-leading UI to control movie playback and the Blu-ray player itself.
NetBlender will apparently announce some new tech later this week (April 10) that will give the iPhone and iPod Touch. Dubbed BD Touch, the technology will allow networkable Blu-ray players to link their content to the iPhone - allowing you to use your iPhone as a remote control.
But, it doesn't end there. NetBlender says that their new technology will allow you to transfer a digital copy of the Blu-ray movie to your iPhone. The movie will likely be re-formatted for the iPhone (it just doesn't make sense to view a 1080p video on the iPhone), but we'll have to wait for the official announcement to see exactly how BD Touch will work.

Walt Mossberg doesn?t really know when the 3G iPhone will launch - no solid 3G iPhone launch date
It was nice to think that Uncle Walt had an inside line on Apple's plans to launch the 3G iPhone in just a couple months, but that's where it ends. The seasoned gadget reviewer has just done an about face on his comment that the 3G iPhone will launch in 60 days.
Apparently, the comment was overblown and Walt Mossberg says that he has no better idea about the next-generation 3G iPhon's launch than any of us do. Walt says that his comment saying that the 3G iPhone is due out in 60 days was merely based on widely held speculation that the next-gen iPhone will be launching in June or July - the same speculation that we've been holding onto for months now. The comment was made during an aside regarding data networks and Mossberg is surprised that the blogosphere made such a big deal about it. [Hey Walt, that's what happens when you're Walt Mossberg and you enjoy the good graces of Steve Jobs.]
"If I knew when this date was, why would I announce it in the middle of a sentence at the Finnish embassy, rather than report it in the Wall Street Journal?" says Walt Mossberg. Good point, Walt. Good point.
We're still going to bank on a mid-2008 release for the 3G iPhone. If we hold our breath long enough, Apple may just feel obligated to meet our expectations…right?

Nokia readies iPhone response
Company's 'Tube' device would be touch-based and feature Java support
Nokia remains at work on its answer to the Apple iPhone, codenamed "Tube," a company official said on Monday.
Shown in a slide at the Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City, Calif., Tube looks similar to the popular iPhone. The Nokia device showed graphical displays, such as a promotion for the movie Shrek the Third. Other capabilities will be featured, such as the ability to upload photos.
"It's our first touch device," said Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia. Interfacing with the system is done via touch similar to the iPhone. He said the company has not published the planned date of shipment for Tube.
Nokia believes it can compete with iPhone, and during his presentation, Libretto compared volume shipments of iPhone to Nokia's shipments of phones. Since the launch of iPhone in June, Apple has shipped 5 million to 6 million of the devices, paling in comparison to Nokia's device shipments, Libretto said. "We've done that [volume] since we've had dinner on Friday," he said.
(Apple afterward said 4 million iPhones had shipped worldwide by January.)
The Tube will support Java, something Apple has been reluctant to do with iPhone.

Nokia To Release The Tube - iPhone Rival
It comes as no surprise that Nokia has an iPhone killer in the works. Nokia recently announced a Smartphone that’s been codenamed the “Tube” and gives the iPhone a run for its’ money.
“It’s our first touch device” said Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia. Interfacing with the system is done via touch similar to the iPhone.
The Tube mobile phone will allow users to upload videos and will support Java, something that the iPhone does not do. There’s no word on the price or when Nokia will begin shipping the “Tube” but I’ll bet it won’t be long before they roll it out. We’ll keep you posted on developments..

Future of Nokia Smartphones, Will the iPhone Continue to Dominate?

Earlier today, someone I know asked me this: “What do you think of future Nokia smart phones? Do you think they will stand a chance? Also what about Apple’s iPhone? Do you think the future competition is going to affect their dominance in this space?”
Below is my take on the subject. I thought that I would share and get some feedback (feel free to comment):
Nokia has a tough fight ahead. They have been able to retain the top spot in terms of unit shipped because they lead in emerging countries. I wonder if their margins are getting thinner... Their main competitors for 2008 are Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Both companies have come up with great phones in early 2008. Motorola is going to fade away, unless they come up with a "RAZR-like" success (not by endlessly replicating the RAZR!), which is unlikely, given that the company is, in my opinion, ridden with internal politics and red tape. If you look closely, you will see that there was little evolution on the software side for everyone in this list. All the players above are hardcore *hardware* companies. Now, both Sony Ericsson and Samsung are using Windows Mobile - smart move, because they can’t pull this one off themselves. How long can Nokia resist? Let’s face it, Symbian is under a tremendous pressure from Apple, Microsoft and BlackBerry. (Let’s see what happens with Nokia’s acquisition of Trolltech)

iCoral iPod Dock from Copulare

If you want to live it up in your home, why not settle for the iCoral iPod dock from Copulare of Germany? It features a synthetic coral top which is meant to eliminate vibrations, although I'm not too sure how much water that claim holds. Other features include S-Video out, coaxial out and a USB port, accompanied by a remote that displays the iPod menu on an LCD display. It will retail for a whopping $2,350, which is pretty silly considering the iPod plays predominantly lossy codecs. Ah well, I guess if you're super rich then it doesn't really matter now, right?

iPod Touch Runs Quake 3
Monday, April 07, 2008

As much as I love Quake 3, the original Quake is still the best title in the franchise for me. This is where quad damage is really four times what a regular blast delivers, and who can forget the superior red armor that provides maximum protection? Precious memories aside, it seems as though someone has managed to create a port of Quake 3 which is able to run on the iPod touch, and presumably on the iPhone as well considering the similarities in architecture for both hardware. Firing is a simple process as all you need to do is tap the screen, but how about rocket jumping? Will it be smooth to execute? I would also be interested to know if the jump over the chasm in the inner room on Q3Tourney4 can still be accomplished here.

Quake 3 Arena ported to iPhone/iPod Touch!
We all know there's a lot happening under the hood of Apple's touchy products, iPhone and iPod Touch. However, we had no idea the CPU can handle a game like Quake 3 Arena. To be fair, it's been a while since the popular first-person-shooter has been released, but it's impressive nevertheless.
Anyway, we've no details who did this and as you're about to see from the following video - they even make use of the built-in accelerometer. It doesn't mean Quake will be more "playable" on the iPhone/iPod Touch than it is on a PC, but will certainly make the gaming experience more engaging. Enjoy the video!

3G iPhone to sport a black case?

We're not sure whether to believe this or not, but apparently the image above represents the upcoming 3G iPhone. The bad thing we hear is that instead of using a metal, Apple may opt for the plastic case. That's a plastic case with glossy black finish, but still, the material would make the iPhone less solid.
From what we know, the iPhone is "months away" but somehow we doubt Apple will reduce the built quality of one of its flagship products. The 8GB mark along with the rest of the text on the case indicates its not a ColorWare work. We'll see where this goes…

Griffin ClearBoost iPhone antenna-boosting case promises a lot, but does it deliver?
Friday, April 04, 2008

If you're like me, you don't buy into the antenna-boosting scam. I may be little harsh to the whole niche industry, but adding an external antenna without opening the actual device and connecting the wires simple doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe I'm wrong…
Anyway, we've recently spotted Griffin's antenna-boosting case for iPhone called ClearBoost which promises, guess what, to improve the signal reception on your shiny handset. The case seems solid enough and the package even includes the so-much-needed screen protector sticker. The piece of metal on the back of the case supposedly should do all the magic when it comes to signal reception.
Griffin says that "you can expect to see improvements that won't necessarily be reflected in the number of bars on your iPhone," making me even be more cautious. Maybe I'll try one after all. Have to see whether the stores around have it, and if it works, I'll report back to you. In the meantime, check out the Griffin's "How can I measure how well ClearBoost is working?" video after the jump. Alternatively, you may want to visit their site to get more info on the product.

iPod nano Belt

This belt not only helps keep your pants up, but your spirit as well. Using polyurethane leather, the buckle boasts a headphone port that allows you to listen to your iPod nano just about anywhere you go. After all, with the iPod nano tucked away safely inside the buckle itself, it makes it all the harder for someone to nick it. The iPod nano belt retails for $33.99 a pop. I'd strongly recommend you removing your headphones before you drop your pants, lest you want the earbuds to unceremoniously make a hasty exit from your ears down to the floor.

T-Mobile Germany Subsidizes iPhones
Thursday, April 03, 2008

Folks living in Germany have it easy where the iPhone is concerned, thanks to T-Mobile who are offering the 8GB iPhone for a mere €99, as long as you purchase it with a 24-month contract. Granted, there are plenty of rumors floating around about a 3G iPhone being released sometime this year, but I'm sure the iPhone will still look good a couple of years down the road. Folks rocking to the monthly €89 Complete XL plan will benefit from 1,000 minutes, 300 SMS messages, and unlimited data. Does this news make you want to move to Germany? I'd prefer to go there during October for Oktoberfest while talking nonsense with my friends on the iPhone in a drunken stupor.

David Beckham century gift - a golden ipod

Former England captain David Beckham will be dancing for joy after his team-mates clubbed together to buy him a special something to celebrate him reaching the elite 100-cap club for his country.
Beckham, 32, who reached his century during last week's friendly match with France in Paris, has been given an ipod by his colleagues.
As you can see it is not just your standard Apple product but rather a golden 32-gigabyte personalised version to mark the occasion.
Beckham, who made his England debut in September 1996 against Moldova, was picked for new coach Fabio Capello's second national squad, after missing the friendly with Swtizerland due to lack of match fitness.
The LA Galaxy midfielder started the France game in his preferred right-midfield position before being replaced by David Bentley just after the hour mark.
Beckham looks like to add to his 100 caps following Capello's post-match appraisal of his performance, and with just four men ahead of him there is a small possibility the Leytonstone-born footballer could surpass former goalkeeper Peter Shilton's record of 125 England appearances if he is able to continue playing until the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as he desires.
In the meantime he can enjoy listening to his wife's back catalogue on his 600 ipod - he certainly has enough storage space with 32 GB.

AT&T Mobility CEO teases us with 3G iPhone, Centro
At AT&T's press conference, CEO Ralph de la Vega primarily talked about cooperation with Microsoft to deliver Surface tables/computers in the mobile operator's stores around the country. Along with Microsoft's Robbie Bach, the two talked about wonders of the customer experience and how AT&T will benefit from using the Surface technology. We've already covered that part and that's not "on the table" in this post.
The other part of presentation as well as the post-conference Q&A session was more focused on 3G and 4G technologies. There, at some point, de la Vega himself said that all of the carrier's smartphones will be 3G within a "months." Now wait a minute, AT&T also carries Palm Centro and Apple iPhone. While I doubt we'll see Garnet singing along HSDPA, iPhone is completely another beast. Is this a hint or what? CEOs are well trained to speak with the press and I doubt de la Vega accidentally said the "months" word. On the other hand, he may just wanted more publicity, which is also highly unlikely. Guess we'll have to wait and see…

iPhone used less for talk, more for Web and music, says iSuppli
US iPhone owners are spending their time enjoying all its capabilities ? voice, data communications and multimedia entertainment ? rather than exclusively using it for traditional voice calls, according to a latest consumer survey by research firm iSuppli.
Owners of all types of mobile handsets use their phones for voice communications 71.7% of the time, according to research from iSuppli's ConsumerTrak survey of US residents. In contrast, iPhone owners spend just 46.5% of their time with the product engaged in voice calls.
US consumers said they spent 12.1% of their iPhone usage time accessing the Internet, a stark contrast with 2.4% for all mobile phones on average. Furthermore, iPhone owners spent 11.9% of their usage time listening to music or other audio, compared to just 2.5% for all mobile handset users.
"This usage pattern shows Apple has succeeded in producing a true convergence product that consumers like to use for multiple purposes," said Greg Sheppard, chief development officer for iSuppli. "Apple has come as close as anyone to achieving a balanced convergence in mobile-handset features and usage."
It's a phone, too
Even before Apple released the iPhone, everyone anticipated it would integrate the mobile phone's voice communications capability with the iPod's audio and video playback functionality. However, Apple has also worked to tailor and promote the iPhone as a device that makes Internet access pleasant and productive, and more like using a computer, according to iSuppli. The large multi-touch screen, ergonomic user interface and Wi-Fi connection, make accessing the Internet something people want to do more with a device like the iPhone, the research firm claimed.
Although iSuppli's research indicates smartphones from HTC are used more than the iPhone on a percentage basis for surfing the Web, the iPhone has the most volume and market impact. Google and Bank of America recently commented on how the rapid rise of traffic from iPhone owners is forcing them to modify their support of mobile Internet activities.
Feeling used
iSuppli's ConsumerTrak survey revealed iPhone users also spent more time emailing than all users on average, with owners spending 10.4% of their time on this task, as opposed to 2.8% for all mobile-phone subscribers. In spite of having only limited corporate IT support so far, the speed (via Wi-Fi) and ergonomics of the iPhone are
compelling users to access their personal email more frequently.
iPhone users are no different from anyone else when it comes to text messaging, as 15% of their time is spent on this activity, according to iSuppli.

ARTDio MS-780 iPod Speaker Dock

Another day, another iPod speaker dock. Today, we have the ARTDio MS-780 from Taiwan that was specially designed to cater for the latest 3G, 2G iPod nano and 2G iPod Shuffle. Of course, iPods aren't the only portable media players that will work with the MS-780 as it is compatible with other audio sources using a 3.5mm stereo input connection. Don't get your expectations up too high where sound quality is concerned, as the 2 watts per channel speaker system isn't much to shoud about. The ARTDio MS-780 can be powered via USB, batteries or an AC adapter, making it highly adaptable. It has been tagged with a $30 price tag and will be available in five different colors.

David Beckham Gets Gold iPod

Although England lost in the recent friendly against France where David Beckham picked up his magical 100th cap, he can always console himself with a gold iPod thanks to his multi-million dollar earning colleagues in the Three Lions team. This 32GB personalized version features the engraving "DAVID BECKHAM - For his 100th England Cap" to keep for all posterity, although I'm pretty sure he'd much prefer the golden lure of the World Cup in two years' time, assuming he still has the legs for it. This iPod cost £600, and woe to him should he fail to copy a single track from his wife's back catalogue of music. After all, 32GB is more than enough to go round.

A Third of iPhone Owners have a Second Phone
Wednesday, April 02, 2008

From what we can tell in the Silicon Valley, a good chunk of these dual-users are around here. I do see a lot of people with an iPhone (to show off) and a Blackberry (to get stuff done) and it is not surprising: despite what iPhone fans are saying, the virtual keyboard of the iPhone simply underperforms, and guess what, it does not get any better overtime.
That’s exactly what I said on January 9 2007: “In my opinion, the iPhone can win the hearts (and wallets) of users who wants a read-only smartphone”
Highlights (from valleywag)- The most heavily used data function on the iPhone is reading (but not writing) email.
- 40 percent say the iPhone has trouble displaying some websites they want to visit.
- 50 percent of iPhones replaced conventional mobile phones, 40 percent replaced smartphones, and 10 percent replaced nothing.

What Does An iPhone Shortage Mean?

It is now clear that there is an iPhone shortage, since AT&T has been busy clearing out their refurbished iPhone stock while Apple stores seem to run short of iPhones no matter which part of the country you're in. Pundits and Apple fanboys will definitely think positively - is there a much needed iPhone refresh on the way? Chances are Steve Jobs will wait until this June or WWDC to announce a 3G iPhone, so September ought to be the month where you break the bank to pick up one of these newfangled iPhones. Just keep your fingers crossed that a 3G iPhone, when released, won't experience a $200 price slash a couple of months after that.

- Sprint TV and Microsoft Live Search
- Haptic technology for tactile feedback
- 2 megapixel camera

Pwnage iPhone Unlocking Tool

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to your the big momma of all iPhone unlocking tools to date known appropriately as 'Pwnage'. this software update enables an iPhone to install unsigned firmware, which means hackers will be able to integrate their latest cracks/unlocks/applications directly into the newest firmware, leaving the user with a 'pwned' iPhone (for the want of a better adjective) that just needs to restore the hacked firmware through a file in iTunes. Guess jailbreaking an iPhone has just gotten so simple, even your dog could do it! I wonder what Apple has to say about this...
