There's no question that the CECT i9 is a best seller today.  It's a great phone and I often write about it.  I'm often asked how it compares to many other phones such as Apple's iPhone or other popular CECT phones like the SciPhone i68, the T32 / M88, and the original P168. I'll compare this phone to other models in this article in an attempt to help you decide if it's a good fit for you.

i9 Versus The iPhone:  Of course, the basic difference between these two is that the clone is contract free.  It will work with any GSM carrier which uses a sim card.  You can do most anything with the knock off that you can do with the original.  And, there are a few bonus features too.   The knock off is a dual sim which means that you can have two phone numbers or networks. It also has FM radio and you can remove the battery yourself.  With the original, you have to let the dealer do this for you and I believe this cost around $79.  In short, this is a great substitute if you want the technology of the iPhone without the contract.

i9 Versus The T32 / M88: The T32 and the M88 are very similar phones, but the 88 is quad band while the 32 is only tri band.  Still, both of these phones have WiFi, GPS, and Windows Mobile.  Although the 9 has Java which allows you to download thousands of applications and software, it doesn't have the WiFi, GPS, or Windows.  But, you'll pay more for these, which are around $100 more in price.

CECT i9 Vs The SciPhone:  These phones are so similar that these terms are often used interchangeably by sellers.  But, there are a few tiny differences.  Many of the 9s have 2.0 mega pixel cameras as opposed to the i68's 1.3 mega pixel camera.  Also, the 9 has "dual sim active," while the Sci has "dual sim standby."  The difference is that with the 9, you don't have to switch back and forth between the two.  Both of them can be on line at once.

i9 Versus P168: The 9 is an upgrade of the P168 and many consumers believe that this model successfully combines what was right with the original iClone and other popular models like the HiPhone and the A88.  The upgrades were that the phone was made a quad band, included the "shake and tilt" feature (advancing music by shaking the phone), added Java so that you could download applications and software, enabled the phone to hold up to 8GB of memory, and no longer requiring your to switch back and forth between both sims.

I was really looking forward to see all these phones making waves in different aspects of the mobile industry, which i think were successful in one way or the other. But at the end of the day there had to be only one winner that would stand out from all the other "SMARTtouch" phones available in the market. Read on for more insight.

Well to give you a brief on each one of them, I would first start off with iPhone - It's till now one of the sleekest and branded as the most sought after and possessive phone with a massive "sex appeal" and multitouch screen phone available in the market. It has got all the looks you can dream of with good user interaction and response. On the other hand there is the latest T-Mobile G1 (with Google Android Operating system) which you won't even dream of owning it just for the looks but as far as the interface (software side) is concerned, I would say its one of the best in the market with rich Web-friendly Internet Apps. And last but not the least Blackberry Storm which did not bring in a "STORM" in the smartphone industry as expected but manged to get in some positive reception from the users. My personal experience with the phones are discussed below in detail.

iPHONE - A perfect combination of a Phone, iPod and Internet device. My first glance of iPhone was itself very positive, whether you go for the looks, interaction, multitouch screen or the size of the phone. The phone is indeed very lightweight and has got only one home key that brings up the Home screen with options of selecting iPod, Instant messaging, texting, settings, YouTube, Calendar, Maps, Apps stores. The best thing that I came across was when I used the onscreen keyboard. It was very efficient even when i used my thumb to enter any letter or number, it was spot on ( I didn't even imagine in my dreams the interaction with the onscreen keyboard would be so easy) and the overall touch and feel of the phone is brilliant.

Pro's - No need for a stylus as it has got a very responsive multitouch screen, In-built Memory options of 8GB and 16GB, it also has Wifi and Bluetooth, easy access to all the features of the phone through a single home (circular) button, very nice iPod as well.

Con's - No video recorder software (available as a separate download), Very expensive when taken on Pay as you go plans (both in US & UK) , Need a converter to convert MP3's to iTunes, No separate battery slot (have to send it to Apple to get the battery replaced), Low profile camera - only 2 MegaPixel (as compared to other phones with 3.2 MegaPixels).

T-Mobile G1 - Best Internet ready device with Google Maps. The interface of the phone was one of the best in the market as it comes from a reputed company "Google" which has one of the best and the simplest online interactive interfaces on the internet (the good old Google search box). The phone has two home screens which can be accessed by just sliding it sideways. It has one of the best phone locking features by drawing a pattern on the dots which appear on the screen whatever way you want as compared to iPhone wherein you can unlock the phone by just sliding finger from right to left on the screen.

Pro's - Keypad included for quick access to the keys, good support for 3rd party applications as it has got an open source software called Android which can be modified as required by the users (more Apps. will appear in the future). Has got good quality camera of 3.2 MegaPixels and has got a separate battery slot.

Con's - No video recording facility ,Not a good option if you want looks. The phone when slided horizontally gives a very old fashioned look (not a good start from Google in the mobile industry). Not at a good phone to carry in your pocket as it is very big as compared to iPhone.

Suggestion - It would be nice to see in future if Google launches Android on some respected phone brand companies like Sony ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, LG. And if they do I am sure that it will become one of the best touch screen phones in the market.

Blackberry Storm - It is nice phone with good looks and nice interface. The best thing about this phone is the resolution of the screen. It is the first phone in the market which has a touch screen with an impression of the keys. You can feel that the onscreen keys or buttons being pressed. The marketing was done to a much extent depending on this feature of the phone but i don't think that it was as successful as they thought it to be. The reason being that is the whole screen gets depressed when a key is pressed which makes it difficult for the user to use touch sensitive applications like photos wherein if you want zoom the pictures, you have to first press the whole screen and then tap the screen to zoom the pictures which I consider is not soo good.

Pro's - Great screen resolution as compared with the other two phones, best suited for frequent e-mail users as traditionally Blackberry's are made for messaging on the go, the size of the phone is not so big and doesn't feel odd to carry. Good quality camera of 3.2 MegaPixels and separate Battery slot.

Con's - No video recording facility, Not soo good multitouch screen when compared with iPhone as the whole screen gets depressed.

Conclusion - So as far as I have seen all the three handsets I would say that if you want to go for the looks with good interface and feature rich phone, you should definitely go for iPhone. If you want the best interface and best internet feature rich phone, go for T-Mobile G1 and if you are looking for the best screen resolution with e-mail on the fly (best suited for business users), I would strongly suggest you to go for Blackberry Storm.

Take the first generation iPhone and the new iPhone 3G, at first glance they appear remarkable similar. In fact, the average passerby may not even notice a difference at all! But a closer inspection reveals quite a few astounding - and unexpected - contrasts.

The most noteworthy difference is the introduction of the 3G networking. While an iPhone 3G still possesses the EDGE capability, the 3G network is usually twice as fast (if sometimes unavailable). It also sports a new GPS system that can trace the user's exact location (and can even send that information to third party applications).

Secondly: the backplates. While the original iPhone had one uniform color (silver) and that unsightly black antenna, the iPhone 3G comes in your choice of either white or black - and the backplate is all one piece, also. On the first generation, aluminum was the material of choice but on the 3G that aluminum was replaced by plastic, making the 3G more scratch (and damage) resistant.

The batteries, also, have undergone substantial changes; going from a 1400 mAh on the standard iPhone to an 1150 mAh on the 3G. In combination with that, the battery was originally soldered right to the device but, in the latest generation, has simply been connected to it. Because of all the new applications on the 3G, this battery doesn't have a reputation as being the longest-lasting.

The LCD, too, has been improved for a new model. While the original version had one part, the 3G has introduced a separation of these parts, creating an outer glass and the screen itself - which is good news should one of them ever break (not only is it cheaper to fix or replace, it's also easier).

It may also be worth mentioning that the 3G sports a new, tapered frame (making it thicker in the middle than at the edges) - which in turn makes it a more comfortable fit for any palm. The 3G also has a tendency to "spider crack", though, so watch out! It's completely backwards compatible and works with any original iPhone application. It also displays the serial number right there on the tray for easy identification.

I had heard a little bit about the Nike Plus plugin on for the iPod Nano and decided to go ahead and buy one. First you need Nike shoes that have the +, meaning a hole under the inserts in the shoes. Then you have to buy the package for about $30 which includes a little plastic ball and a small plugin for the Nano. Once you have the ball in your shoe and the plugin on your iPod Nano, you are ready to go. A new field on your iPod main screen will appear called, "Nike Plus."

You have a few options with Nike Plus. You can build your own workout, set a "Power Song" to play, and select a man or women's voice among other options. The Nike Plus will keep track of how far you run, pace, and keep track of your record times. I even used it on the tread mill to compare how accurate it is and it really was dead on. I was pretty impressed.

I generally run mile before my workout and occasionally go for 3 mile runs outside. At first the Nike Plus was a lot of fun to use but after a week or two, I kind of lost the desire to even use it on my 1 mile warm-ups. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who runs 10+ miles per week. Otherwise you probably don't run enough to really need it. Plus if you don't already have shoes that use it, you'll have to buy a pair which can run anywhere between $70-$150. I'm pretty sure you could just put the plastic ball under your laces of other shoes but I'm not sure it would still work the same.

Size: First up, let's look at the size of the two phones. The original iPhone clone that came out last year, (the P168), weighed in at 125 grams. In contrast, the i9 weighs 100 grams and the M188 weighs only 70. While the older P168 had the dimensions of 117 x 61x 16mm, the i9 measures 110 x 60 x 11.5 mm. The M188 is the smallest at 85 x 49 x 10 mm. Obviously, the 88 is the tiniest and lightest. It's about the size of a credit card. So, if you're going for the smallest model, this is it. If you're content with a light, relatively sleek phone that will easily fit in a pocket, the 9 fits the bill too.

Color: One big draw of the M model is that it comes in a gold finish. These gold ones are readily available. I have seen sellers that offer the i9 in colors like pink and rainbow, but they are harder to come by.

Quad Band Or Tri Band: If you don't know which you need, call your carrier or check their website. Most people are fine with a tri band. The exception is if you run on the 850 MHZ band. In that case, you'd need a quad band. The i9 is a quad band. The M188 is only a tri band.

Do You Want Or Need Java?: One very popular feature of the 9 model is that it contains Java 2.0. This means that you can download or use third party downloads applications, and software. A few examples of this are Outlook, Word, Skype, etc. The 88 doesn't have Java.

Price: Both of these are inexpensive phones that don't require a contract. The cost is going to depend on memory. Obviously, one of these clones with 8GB of memory is going to cost more than an comparable phone of only 2GB. But, both of these average in the low $100 range. Sometimes, the M188 is slightly more expensive. I suspect that's because there are fewer available.

Features That These Phones Share: Both of these are dual sim, finger touch phones that have the shake and tilt or "swing to the music" feature. Both have: web browsing; MP3 / MP4; Bluetooth; dual sim slots (two plans or phone numbers); FM radio; e book readers; digital camera and web cam. Both are responsive, nice phones that more than get the job done and house tons of features on the cheap.

So, Which Phone Is Really Better?: Which of these you prefer depends on what you are looking for in a phone. If you want or need a quad band, you'll want the i9. But, if you're looking for "something different" that's not your typical iPhone clone, the small size and the gold color of the M188 may turn your head.

As phones become more and more like mini-computers, the types of applications running on the phones become more and more important. More and more people use phone for doing more than just making phone calls and SMS/MMS or emails. I use my phone to tweet, to check out my news feed, to play games and videos, listen to music and do some simple photo editing.

Between Apple and Google. I am placing my bet with Google. While Apple is really good with its devices and has huge success with its Appstore, Apple is still very much in the consumer space. Apple is driving iPhone adoption in the enterprise market by supporting Microsoft Outlook Exchange push mail and leaving it to the software developers or SaaS providers such as salesforce.com or sugarsync to develop iPhone applications. Its move into push mail for Outlook Exchange has certainly waken RIM up. RIM has just launched its business grade iPhone-equivalent as a retaliatory tactic (see my other post on Blackberry Storm).

Google on the other hand uses a flanking approach. It does not support Microsoft Exchange push email and therefore does not attract much attention from RIM. G1's target segments are users who really love to have push capabilities for email, calendar and contacts and yet do not want to pay for Apple Mobile-Me or the great fans of Gmail users who desire to have the push capability as well as the small businesses who do not have outlook exchange and are or intend to use web-based emails. In addition, I believe over time Google will replicate its full suite of desktop apps onto its mobility roadmap. All the Google apps are part of a growing suite of services that support search, collaboration and mobility.

While the form factor of the G1 phone is not exactly as sexy as that of an iPhone, the G1 phone and Android software are really designed to support search, collaboration and mobility. To facilitate its mobility roadmap, Google made Android an open platform so that developers can access the core mobile device functionality through standard APIs to develop apps that truly encourage collaboration and mobility. I won't be surprised if Google starts to make the mobile version of its Google Gadgets available on its Android platform. That means the Google gadgets can be placed easily on my mini-mobile web pages or microblogs.

Lately, I've been receiving a lot of emails from folks wanting to know about the "SciPhone i9."  When I explain that the SciPhone often refers to the i68 which is a different, (but also good) phone, the next question is usually, "well, which one is better?"  I'll try to answer that question in this article, as well as go over some of the similarities and the differences of the features of these two phones.

Both The i9 And The SciPhone i68 Are Excellent, Small, Shake And Tilt Quad Bands: Both of these iPhone clones are newer models that have added the shake and tilt feature and an extra band to the original P168 model, making this original iClone quad band. They are also smaller, lighter, and thinner than previous models, weighing about 100 grams. 

Java Support:  If there was one criticism of the P168 (other than it being tri band), it was that you couldn't download or use third party software with it because there was no Java support.  Both of these new clones include Java 2.0, which allows for unlimited additional downloads, games, and possibilities.

Camera Quality And Both Sims On line At Once (Dual Sim Active): Most of the i68s have a 1.3 mega pixel camera, while most true i9s have a 2.0 mega pixel camera (although I've seen them as high as 3.0 MP).  True i9's have what is called "dual sim active."  This means that both cards can be on line and working at one time. SciPhones typically have "dual sim standby" which means that you have to switch back and forth between the two.

One problem that many buyers have though is that sellers sometimes use these terms interchangeably.  You really need to read the item description to determine what you are truly getting.  There is an upgraded model to the i68 (called the plus) that has new "flow touch" firmware, so if this is important to you, make sure you see this in the item description, whether you are looking at the i9 or the i68.

The price on both of these models is extremely similar.  Since both can hold up to 8GB, what you pay typically depends upon memory included.  But, even models full of memory are often in the $100 and up range.

So, Which Is Better? Which of these phones are going to work out better for you depends on what you must have in a phone. If you really want both cards on line at once, you'd likely want the 9.  If the newest firmware is most important the upgraded i68+ will probably work fine for you. 

Unfortunately, since the sellers continue to use these terms interchangeably, it's important that you read the full description and ask questions.  Because it's absolutely possible to get one of these phones that includes quad band, dual sim active, the latest firm ware, and a 2.0 MP or higher camera.
