Apple Inc. has tried to produce a device that can do much more than a phone, with the launch on the iPhone. A completely touch screen based device, the iPhone has minimal external hardware to cope up with and an elegant and responsive touch screen. This small, multi-purpose device is a slim entertainment toy as well as functional tool.  Its 3.5” widescreen display is multi-touch and has a 480x320 pixel resolution that displays 163 pixels per inch.  It can support multiple characters and languages all at the same time, and it comes equipped with an 8GB flash drive.  This drive can hold a user’s, photos, videos, and music as well as their phone book, scheduler, and Internet URLs.  Phone capabilities include conferencing, call holding, merging, caller ID, and integration if the user’s cell phone service plan allows it.

The Apple iPhone has a built in 2.0 megapixel camera.  While this is pretty standard across the board in cell phones today, the downfall of the phone’s camera is its lack of flash, making it great for still photos in well lit areas and not much else.  The phone is also lacking a video recording function, something else many comparable phones include. One interesting feature the phone does have, however, is the video voicemail feature.

This allows users to view current voicemails without actually calling into the voicemail service, although how the video part of this works is unclear.  User’s can watch television shows and movies on the phone.  These are played in landscape orientation, giving the viewer a clear, but small picture.  Games and other applications which come standard on other phones are available for this one; availability is based on the user’s service plan.

Owners of the Apple iPhone will be able to lay out their music library in alphabetical divided sections, allowing them to sort their media by song, artist, album, videos, etc.  To move through the library, users will simply scroll through it by swiping their finger across the screen. 

Songs and ringtones are available for purchase and download through the iTunes store directly over the Wi-Fi option for those users with an iTunes subscription (not included in the package and available for an additional fee).  Other cellular data networks are not included.  Wallpapers, screen savers, and other graphics can also be downloaded at the user’s discretion.

When used with a Wi-Fi network, the Apple iPhone is Internet capable, supporting fill web pages, but not Flash or Java.  User’s zoom in and out of the pages by tapping the screen and they can access YouTube videos and Google’s map service with a simple touch.  It supports e-mail with .PDF, Word, and Excel attachments and allows the user to view the attachments.  Text messaging and media messaging are also standard functions.

The Apple iPhone also includes a contact list, organizer, calendar, and alarm clock, all basic features of most cell phones.  It is Bluetooth ready but cannot support stereo audio headsets other than the one’s that are included with the phone in its standard packaging.  The basic setup available includes a phone dock, computer cable, USB power adaptor, use documentation, and cleaning cloth.

I often write about the import, dual sim iPhone clones, so I sometimes get emails asking about them.  The other day, someone emailed me and asked "can I get online with the SciPhone?"  The answer to this question is a resounding yes.  In fact, the web browsing, screen quality, and ease of surfing is one of the main selling points of this phone.  Recently, I tried getting to and navigating the same sites on both the SciPhone and the Blackberry Curve.  Without a doubt, the knock off was far easier to use as far as the web goes.  It's so easy to navigate the page using your finger.  You aren't constantly having to roll the track ball.  And, the page is large and easy to read.  On the blackberry, the letters were tiny and I had to keep zooming in.  This took much longer. But to get on line and happily surfing, you'll first need to make sure that have a couple of things in place, which I will go over in the following article.

Make Sure You Install The Sim Card(s) Correctly: First, make sure that you have the top sim's gold side facing down and the bottom card installed with the gold side facing up. (Many people install them with both sides facing down.) Also, make sure to change the settings if you chose to only use one card.

Make Sure You Have Data Available: Unless you have data on your sim card or as part of your plan, you'll need to get it before you can browse.  There is data available on many pre paid cards. T Mobile To Go and GoPhone has a couple of data packages, but if you are going to be a heavy user, a better option may be finding one of the unlimited sim cards that allow you 30 days of use. These are usually around $20 and allow to get unlimited web, text, MMS, talk, etc.  This usually works out to be much cheaper if you're going to be browsing large sites.

If you are using a network, adding data is usually just a matter of calling your carrier or adding this online.  However, you do it, you'll have to get some sort of data to get on the web.  Luckily though, by not being chained to a contract, this doesn't have to break the bank since you can shop around.

Set Up Your WAP, DATA And Java Settings:  To get online, you'll need to get the applicable settings for your carrier and enter them in correctly.  There are some very good step by step instructions for almost every carrier, if you know where to look.  Usually set up goes like this.  You first will input the data  / GPRS settings, then the WAP settings and then the Java settings to point them to your carrier.  (If you're using a compact browser like Opera Mini, you'll need to go in and change the Java settings too.)  You'll also need to input the MMS settings if you're going to be using that. This sounds like a lot, but the whole process only takes a few minutes.

Once you get these things set up correctly, you'll find that the web browsing experience on this phone is very good.  It's fast.  It's very easy to navigate and the large screen gives you a very generous view without needing to scroll or move around very much.  Many people will email me and indicate that they think they got a dud phone because they can't get on line.  But, almost always, it's just a matter of putting in a few settings so that your phone knows which mechanism you want it to use to get online.

One of the more entertaining aspects of owning an iPhone is the plethora of apps that are available for your use and enjoyment. Some of them are really helpful, informative, or at least interesting: weather updates, celeb gossip, directions, movie times, etc. Then there are the completely superfluous apps that make you scratch your head and wonder why anyone would ever need that - right before you download it yourself.

iBeer is probably one of the most pointless apps, yet everyone seems to have it. It's an app that turns your screen into a full pint glass of beer, and you can "drink" it by tilting your iPhone downwards. The beer then flows out of the pint glass. Sounds simple enough, yet it's enough to reduce grown men to giggles when they all use it.

Tickle Me! is another app that seems to be mainly for the amusement factor - even if that factor does wear off pretty quickly. The app enables your touchscreen to respond to you tickling it, with a slightly irritating child's laugh.

One that still makes no sense is Hold On, an app where you hold your finger in one spot on the touch screen for as long as you can. That's it. This could probably be amusing for a bunch of drunken people who are pretending to be sober, but that's about it.

This is admittedly better than people just holding up their cell phones, which has always looked silly.

CoinFlip is another that goes into the "is that really necessary?" category, yet everyone seems to have it. It does exactly what its name indicates - it flips a coin.

A pretty amusing app is the Abacus, which seemingly goes against everything the iPhone really is - cutting edge technology. But again, maybe for the drunk folks trying to figure out how much money they have at the end of the night, this might work.

Too tired to yell enthusiastically for your sports team of choice? Then the "Wooo!" app may be for you. It's a button that shows up on your touchscreen, and every time you hit it, a tinny voice says "wooo!" Very exciting.

Lastly, there is the I Can Has Cheezburger app, which sends you an update every time there's a new location posted. Who doesn't need that?

There's something compelling about some of these iPod touch apps, even though they do absolutely nothing useful, and in fact, just mostly take up space on your iPhone or iPod touch. However trivial some of these applications may seem, they offer enjoyment to the hundreds of thousands of users who download them. After all, isn't that the point of these applications?

The iPhone is firmly established as one of the very top smartphones available. The 3G version has been available since June 2008 and offered several improvements over the original. These included a real GPS locator and 3G connectivity. At the same time Apple also introduced the ability to download applications onto the device. But does it all live up to the hype? This is a consumer product review on the iPhone.

Alongside the iPhone 3G, Apple released version 2.0 of the operating software. This was unfortunately quite buggy and made things such as writing text texts quite hard, as the virtual keyboard would really lag behind what you were typing. However, Apple soon updated the software and many of the issues became history. Owners could look forward to making the most of their iPhone.

Now there are over 15,000 applications available for the iPhone and over 500 million downloads have been made. That is a pretty staggering statistic and clearly the iPhone has changed the game for mobile phone handset makers, but do these really add value to the iPhone experience? There are several free apps that do help out. One is the Google application which has a very good voice activated search. Other than that many people download games, a great deal of which are free. Most iPhone users would agree that the games are far superior to those available on other handsets. If your iPhone has battery then you will never be forced to endure a moment of boredom.

So the games are great, but what else? The web browser is excellent for such a small device. You tend to click on links by accident too much, but I doubt this can be helped. The key issue with the web browser is that it doesn't support flash, so film clips, on the whole, are inaccessible. If you are used to using plug-ins in your browser, you may also find yourself missing these. However, the key issue is the lack of MMS (picture) messaging. You can only send photos via email, which isn't always ideal.

The key is to review your current handset and ascertain what features you really use. Then check out the iPhone and see if they are available. You might find a few surprises, but on the whole the iPhone experience is good.

If you hold the CECT i9 and the T1 side by side, they look very similar (in fact, the T1 phone is often called "the i9 with TV." Both are based on and look almost exactly like the iPhone, but there are some key differences (and in my opinion improvements) that are stand outs. I'll go over these things in the following article and will also compare some of the features.

Analog TV and The T1: The main place where these phones differ is that the T1 has analog TV and the i9 doesn't. The phone has an antennae that pulls out when you want to use the television. There is no additional cost, software or monthly fee for this. The antennae picks up local station's signals. Of course, you won't get cable, but you can pick up local channels (news, sports, sitcoms, etc.) and if you want to want to watch cable shows or movies, you can typically do that on line with the phone's web browser and you can watch MP4 movies on the built in movie player (The 9 allows this as well, just not the analog television.)

Shake And Tilt: One thing that a lot of people love about the 9 is that it has the swing to the music or shake and tilt feature. This allows you to advance your songs, movies, wallpapers, etc. by sort of flicking your wrist or shaking the phone. Most T models do not have this, so if this feature is a must have for you, then the 9 may be a more reasonable choice.

Java: The i9 has Java and this is a huge selling point of it. The original P168 iClone was a huge seller, but it didn't include Java which didn't allow for all of those cool third party downloads like Mobile Office (PowerPoint, Word, etc.). There are some T1s that don't include Java. However, some do so just read the description to make sure. Not having Java is not a deal breaker for everyone as most people who are interested in this phone really want it for the TV.

What They Both Have: Despite the differences that I've just pointed out, both of these phones function quite similarly. They're both loaded with features. Both have the large 3.2 inch touch screens that have the menu flow control. Both are quad bands and both have dual sim slots which allows you to have two phone numbers, networks, or plans. (Many people will have one cheap talk plan in one slot and another pre paid data plan sim in the other. This saves a lot of money on monthly contracts.)

Both phones allow web browsing (opera mini is popular on these phones.) Both have email and SMS / MMS. Both have MP3 / MP4, digital camera / web cams, FM radios, and ebook readers. There are also tools like calendars, to do list, currency converters, Bluetooth, etc. The battery life on both is very good. There are USB cords to transfer data and each can hold up to 8GB of memory.

So, Which Is Better?: That depends on which phone's features work out being better for you. If you are dead set on real time TV, then the T1 is an obvious choice. But, if the TV isn't absolutely necessary and want Java or shake and tilt, the best selling i9 may fir the bill.
